Ecological momentary assessment versus traditional retrospective self-reports as predictors of health-relevant outcomes

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) has been asserted by proponents of the technique as being superior to standard paper-and-pencil measurements in terms of the reliability and validity of the information obtained; however, this claim has not yet been fully evaluated in the literature. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to evaluate one aspect of this assertion by comparing the utility of EMA and retrospective measures of depressive symptoms in predicting health-relevant biological and behavioral outcomes. It was hypothesized that (1) the EMA measure will have better predictive utility when examining objective sleep quality (a biological outcome), and that (2) the retrospective measure will have better predictive utility when examining blood donation intention (a behavioral outcome). Ninety-six undergraduate females participated in this 2-week study. Depressive symptoms were measured momentarily and retrospectively using the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D). The biological outcome was assessed by actigraphy, whereas the behavioral outcome was measured via a self-report questionnaire. Unfortunately, it was not possible to fully test these hypotheses due to the failure to observe relationships between the predictor variables and the outcomes. The reported results, although limited, did not provide support for the hypotheses. Supplemental analyses revealed a moderate to high amount of shared variance between the EMA and retrospective measures, a similar extent of random error in both measures, and potentially a greater degree of systematic error in the retrospective measure. Due to the paucity of literature examining the claim of superior reliability and validity of EMA versus retrospective measures, as well as the failure of the current study to evaluate this assertion sufficiently, it appears that this claim remains unfounded. Therefore, suggestions for future research are provided.

Moving Beyond Work-Family: Establishing Domains Relevant to Work-Life Conflict

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Theoretically, inter-role conflict can occur between any life domains that place competing demands on an individual. However, inter-role conflict research has mainly focused on the conflict between only two domains: work and family. This limited focus is problematic because it has excluded many other potential life domains in which people participate. In order to focus more attention on other life domains, however, it is necessary to understand which life domains people are participating in. As such, the goal of the present qualitative research was to identify and define the full spectrum of life domains by asking two questions: What life domains are relevant to work-life conflict, and how do people value the various life domains in which they are involved? A total of 13 life domains emerged from the data. Participants engaged in an average of 9 of these domains, indicating that people engage in many activities in life outside just work and family.

Effets des coévaluations formatives élève – élève et enseignante – élève sur le développement de la compétence à communiquer oralement d’élèves du secondaire

À travers la francophonie, l’évaluation formative est considérée par plusieurs chercheurs comme un facteur clé du développement de la compétence à communiquer oralement : elle favorise notamment la régulation des apprentissages (Colognesi, Vassart et al., 2020) et tend à diminuer le stress des apprenants à l’égard des présentations orales (Paquet, 2021). Pourtant, l’évaluation formative de l’oral est quasi absente des pratiques évaluatives des enseignants de français langue d’enseignement au niveau secondaire au Québec (Lafontaine et Messier, 2009; Vega, 2013). De plus, la coévaluation, moyen susceptible d’être mobilisé dans le cadre d’une évaluation formative de l’oral, semble méconnue des enseignants (Dumais, 2008; Sénéchal, 2012) et peu d’études ont été menées à son sujet. C’est pourquoi nos deux objectifs spécifiques sont les suivants : 1) mesurer des effets de la coévaluation formative sur le développement de la compétence à communiquer oralement d’élèves du secondaire; 2) décrire des raisons pouvant expliquer ces effets. Pour atteindre ces objectifs, nous avons réalisé une recherche par méthodes mixtes auprès de trois groupes-classes de première secondaire (élèves âgés de 12 et 13 ans). Une séquence d’enseignement a été mise en place, laquelle comprend l’ajout d’une coévaluation formative élève – élève dans le groupe expérimental 1 et d’une coévaluation formative enseignante – élève dans le groupe expérimental 2. Les données issues d’un prétest et un posttest ont fait l’objet de tests statistiques et les données découlant d'entrevues semi-dirigées ont été analysées à l’aide d’une analyse de contenu. En lien avec le premier objectif, les résultats saillants indiquent que les deux modalités de coévaluation expérimentées produisent un effet d’amélioration similaire. Concernant le deuxième objectif, la coévaluation élève – élève semble être un levier pour la motivation intrinsèque des élèves, les amenant à se sentir responsables de leurs apprentissages et à consacrer plus de temps à la préparation de leur exposé. La coévaluation enseignante – élève, pour sa part, favorise l’amélioration de la confiance en soi des apprenants, surtout lorsque ces derniers valorisent l’enseignante. Ces résultats offrent des pistes didactiques susceptibles de guider les enseignants dans la mise en place de leur propre démarche de coévaluation. / In francophone research areas, several researchers consider formative assessment to be a key factor in the development of oral communication skills. Most notably, it promotes self-regulated learning (Colognesi, Vassart, et al., 2020) and tends to reduce the stress associated with oral presentations in learners (Paquet, 2021). Despite this, formative oral assessment is nearly absent from the evaluation practices of French teachers in Quebec’s high schools (Lafontaine and Messier, 2009; Vega, 2013). Additionally, co-evaluation, an effective practice for formative oral assessment, seems to be unknown to most teachers (Dumais, 2008; Sénéchal, 2012) and few studies have been conducted on this matter. Therefore, our two specific objectives are: 1) to measure the effects of formative co-evaluation on the development of oral communications skills of high school students; 2) to describe possible reasons for these effects. To do so, we conducted a study based on a mixed methods research design among three groups of first-year high school students (12 to 13 years old). We created a teaching unit that included a student – student formative co-evaluation in experimental group 1 and a teacher – student formative co-evaluation in experimental group 2. Data collected from a pre-test and a post-test were statistically analyzed while data collected from semi-structured interviews were examined using a content analysis. With regards to the first objective, the main results indicate that the two methods of co-evaluation produce similar effects on improving oral communication skills. Concerning the second objective, student – student co-evaluation seems to promote intrinsic motivation which leads students to gain a sense of responsibility for their learning and spend more time getting ready for their presentation. Meanwhile, teacher – student co-evaluation helps improve self-confidence in learners, especially when the teacher is highly regarded by the students. These results offer various possible teaching avenues to guide teachers establishing their own co-evaluation procedure.

The needs of FET learners for personal well-being

Personal well-being is a state that involves feelings and thoughts. This concept is investigated in learning area Life Orientation and integrated in the curriculum as a learning outcome for Further Education and Training learners in grades 10-12. A literature study was done to discuss/clarify dimensions of personal well-being that is general subjective, psychological, social and spiritual well-being and mental health. Perspectives, theories, principles and features pertaining to well-being were investigated from an international and local context. An exploratory study used a qualitative approach to investigate and observe perceptions of a small sample of learners of personal well-being. Data gathering used focus groups which completed structured group work activities. The results indicate that learner participants have needs to be satisfied to reach a sense of personal well-being. Die studie is outobiografies en is gegrond op die aanname dat daar tussen die psigoterapeut, sy geskiedenis, die wetenskap (etnografie en tweede-orde kubernetika) en die klient(e) 'n unieke patroonverband bestaan. Die psigoterapeut in die platteland het weens afstand of finansies nie altyd die voorreg om supervisie van 'n eksterne supervisor te ontvang nie. In so 'n situasie kan selfsupervisie, deurdat dit 'n proses van selfontdekking is, 'n belangrike rol in die psigoterapeut se selfontwikkeling speel. Selfsupervisie plaas die klem op die psigoterapeut as persoon en as terapeut; oor wie hy is, waar hy vandaan kom en waarheen hy binne die psigoterapeutiese proses op pad is. Vir enige psigoterapeut is dit belangrik om na 'n hoer vlak van psigoterapie te streef. Hierdie strewe impliseer 'n proses van selfondersoek, delwing, selfevaluasie en disseksie. Hierdie proses is aan die hand van dagboekinskrywings gedoen, waar die psigoterapeut sy daaglikse ervarings en gebeurtenisse vanuit die verlede interpreteer het. Dit plaas die psigoterapeut as hoofspeler, met sy familiegeskiedenis en huidige interpersoonlike opset as inherente deel van sy mondering, op die voorgrond. In hierdie proses word die psigoterapeut sentraal geplaas met die klem op eie verantwoordelikheid met betrekking tot die proses van selfsupervisie. The study is an autobiography based on the assumption that there exists an unique patterned connection between the psychotherapist, his history, science (ethnography and second-order cybernetics), and his clients. Due to distance or financial problems, a rural psychotherapist cannot experience the privilege of supervision with an external supervisor. In such a situation selfsupervision could play an important role in the self-development, because it includes a search of self that will lead to more effectiveness in psychotherapy. Self-supervision focuses on the psychotherapist as a person and therapist, who he is, where he comes from, and in what direction he, as a psychotherapist, is developing within the psychotherapeutic process. It is important to any psychotherapist to strive towards a higher level of psychotherapy. This implies a process of selfinvestigation, dissection and self-evaluation. This process was conducted by means of diary entries in which the psychotherapist interpreted his daily experiences and events in terms of his past. This places the psychotherapist, with his family history and current interpersonal situation, as intrinsic parts of himself, in the foreground. In this process the psychotherapist takes centre stage with emphasis on his responsibility concerning the process of self-supervision. The problems addressed by this personally coloured, scientific study, are problems that the psychotherapist identified through the process of self-supervision and introspection. Such introspection leads to a deeper personal knowledge which the psychotherapist can use to his own benefit but also to the benefit of his family and client system. This study is an attempt to identify a new way of research. It is comprehensive and leads to personal fulfilment and deeper self-knowledge and is also a method by which other psychotherapists could discover themselves and their worlds. It is a slow and painful process. Chapters 1 to 4 comprise of the theoretical rationale of the study and chapters 5 to 12 depict the history of the psychotherapist. La evaluación y el cambio institucional en la sociedad del conocimiento : un estudio de caso en la Universidad del Valle - Colombia

Les sociétés contemporaines affrontent le défi de s’intégrer et s’adapter à un processus de transformation qui vise la construction de sociétés du savoir. Ce processus doit notamment son élan aux institutions d’enseignement supérieur qui constituent un espace privilégié où on bâtit l’avenir d’une société à partir des savoirs et celles-ci doivent faire face aux nouveaux enjeux sociaux, économiques et politiques qui affectent tous les pays du monde. La quête de la qualité devient donc un processus constant d’amélioration et surgit l’intérêt par l’évaluation au niveau universitaire. Par conséquent, cette recherche s’attache au sujet de l’évaluation à l’enseignement supérieur et s’enfonce dans le débat actuel sur les changements provoqués par les évaluations institutionnelles produisant un défi puisqu’il s’agit d’une prise de conscience fondée sur la culture de la qualité. L’autoévaluation est une stratégie permettant aux institutions d’enseignement supérieur mener des processus intégraux de valorisation dont le but est d’identifier les faiblesses des facteurs qui ont besoin d’améliorer. Le résultat conduit à l’élaboration et à la mise en œuvre d’un plan d’amélioration pour l'institution, programme académique ou plan d’études. À travers l’orientation du modèle d’évaluation systémique CIPP de Stufflebeam (1987), on a pu analyser de façon holistique la mise en place de l’autoévaluation depuis son contexte, planification, processus et produit. Ainsi les objectifs de la thèse visent l’identification du développement de la deuxième autoévaluation afin d’obtenir une reconnaissance de haute qualité et effectuer la mise en œuvre du plan d’amélioration auprès des programmes académiques de Licence en Comptabilité et Gestion de l’entreprise de la Faculté de Sciences de l’Administration de l’Université du Valle en Colombie. À travers l’appropriation de la théorie Neo-institutionnelle les changements apparus après l’autoévaluation ont été également analysés et interprétés et ont ainsi permis l’achèvement des fins de la recherche. La méthodologie développe la stratégie de l’étude de cas dans les deux programmes académiques avec une approche mixte où la phase qualitative des entretiens semi-structurés est complémentée par la phase quantitative des enquêtes. Des documents institutionnels des programmes et de la faculté ont aussi été considérés. Grâce à ces trois instruments ont pu obtenir plus d’objectivité et d’efficacité pendant la recherche. Les résultats dévoilent que les deux programmes ciblés ont recouru à des procédés et à des actions accordées au modèle de l’Université du Valle quoiqu’il ait fallu faire des adaptations à leurs propres besoins et pertinence ce qui a permis de mener à terme la mise en œuvre du processus d’autoévaluation et ceci a donné lieu à certains changements. Les composantes Processus Académiques et Enseignants sont celles qui ont obtenu le plus fort développement, parmi celles-ci on trouve également : Organisation, Administration et Gestion, Ressources Humaines, Physiques et Financières. D’autre part, parmi les composantes moins développées on a : Anciens Étudiants et Bienêtre Institutionnel. Les conclusions ont révélé que se servir d’un cadre institutionnel fort donne du sens d’identité et du soutien aux programmes. Il faut remarquer qu’il est essentiel d’une part élargir la communication de l’autoévaluation et ses résultats et d’autre part effectuer un suivi permanent des plans d’amélioration afin d’obtenir des changements importants et produire ainsi un enracinement plus fort de la culture de la qualité et l’innovation auprès de la communauté académique. Les résultats dégagés de cette thèse peuvent contribuer à mieux comprendre tant la mise en œuvre de l’autoévaluation et des plans d’amélioration aussi que les aspects facilitateurs, limitants, les blocages aux processus d’évaluation et la génération de changements sur les programmes académiques. Dans ce sens, la recherche devient un guide et une réflexion à propos des thèmes où les résultats sont très faibles. Outre, celle-ci révèle l’influence des cadres institutionnels ainsi que les entraves et tensions internes et externes montrant un certain degré d’agencement par le biais de stratégies de la part des responsables de la prise de décisions dans les universités. On peut déduire que la qualité, l’évaluation, le changement et l’innovation sont des concepts inhérents à la perspective de l’apprentissage organisationnel et à la mobilité des savoirs. / Contemporary societies face the challenge of incorporating and adapting themselves to a transformation process aimed at the construction of knowledge societies. Such process is especially oriented by Institutions of Higher Education, which are seen as a privileged space where the future of a society is forged through knowledge and as such, they face the new social, economic, and political challenges affecting the world. Thus, the search for quality education becomes a continuous improvement process which brings about the interest in educational evaluation in the university milieu. This research study deals with the evaluation of higher education as part of the current debate concerning the changes and challenges triggered by institutional evaluation, an awareness-raising process based on the quality culture. As an strategy, self-evaluation allows institutions for higher education to carry out holistic assessment processes aimed at detecting weaknesses in those institutions requiring improvement. Therefore, the outcome of this serves as basis for the design and implementation of an improvement plan, not only for each institution but also for each study program. Stufflebeam’s (1987) CIPP systemic model was used to holistically analyze the implementation of self-evaluation, considering variables such as context, planning, process, and product. The objectives of the study were: 1. Find out how the second self-evaluation process of the Public Accounting and Business Administration study programs of the Administrative Sciences Faculty of Universidad del Valle, aimed at obtaining high-quality reaccreditation from the Ministry of National Education of Colombia, was carried out; 2. Implement the Improvement Plan for such study programs; and 3. Analyze and interpret the changes arising from this self-evaluation, by using the Neo-institutional Theory. The methodology evolved around a case study of two study programs. A mixed approach was chosen, where the qualitative stage of semi-structured interviews was complemented by the quantitative stage of surveys. The data also included institutional documents dealing with information about the two study programs and about the Faculty. The findings show that both study programs followed right procedures and carried out correct actions in order to fit the Universidad del Valle Institutional Model by making the necessary adjustments to meet their needs and pertinence, which led to the successful implementation of the self-evaluation process. Likewise, it was found that the factors with the best improvement rate were Academic Processes, Teaching Stuff, Organization, Administration and Management, Human Resources, Infrastructure, and Financial Resources. Contrary to this, the factors with the lowest improvement rate were Alumni and Institutional Welfare. We conclude that following a sound institutional framework provides study programs with an identity and support and, at the same time, it allows them to implement follow-up improvement plans that bring about significant changes resulting in the rooting of the quality culture and innovation of the academic community. These findings can shed light into a better understanding of the implementation of self-evaluation and that of improvement plans. In addition, they can be instrumental in recognizing the importance of facilitating factors as well as constraining factors that may hamper evaluation processes and the generation of changes within the study programs. Thus, this research study can be seen as a reflection guide on a subject which has been scarcely dealt with. It is also important as it exposes the role played by institutional frameworks and the internal and external pressures exerted on administrative staff members involved in decision-making processes at institutions of higher education. All in all, it can be said that quality, evaluation, change, and innovation are inherent concepts to the organizational learning perspective and to the mobility or knowledge transfer.

Metacognition is one of the aims of the Swedish curricula in language teaching. This pilot study focuses on the implementation of this aim in a Swedish high-school. The teachers’ and the pupils’ attitudes towards the pupils’ metacognitive learning strategies and the reasons underpinning these attitudes are examined. The material finding of nine semi-structured interviews, held in a Swedish high-school in language teaching classes of Spanish, French and German, is analyzed with a qualitative method to get an understanding of the situation.The theoretical framework gives an introduction and overview of the actual research on the two key notions for this study: learning strategy and metacognition and related main concepts like cognitive and socio-affective strategies. The literature review shows that metacognitive learning strategies promote the pupils’ autonomy and responsibility in learning a foreign language in a more effective way.The analysis of the empirical material indicates that metacognition is a marginalized topic, although, after explaining them its meaning, both the teachers and the pupils think that it would be important to promote the pupils’ metacognitive learning strategies. However, the teachers emphasize more indirectly and unconsciously on offering different choices to accomplish an exercise than on consciously promoting metacognitive strategies. The main reasons for this were: the lack of time due to large and heterogeneous classes and doubting that most of the pupils could be responsible for their own learning.In cases where pupils had used learning strategies that worked best for them, they had developed these on their own and rarely reflected on them. The work with self-evaluative material like the European Language Portfolio was thought to be a good idea by both teachers and pupils but was not used at this particular school.

Measuring social competence, task competence and self-protection in an organisational context

Research Doctorate - Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / In Chapter 1, I describe social competence, task competence and self-protection in an organisational context. In Chapter 2, I review key self theories and relate them to the self-competence construct. In Chapter 3, I review the research on self-competence to show that there is a need for a construct of social competence and self-protection. I discuss the limitations of three self-competence theories: Bandura’s (1977) self-efficacy theory, Williams and Lillibridge’s (1992) self-competence theory and Tafarodi & Swann’s (1995) self-competence/self-liking theory. In Chapter 4, I present my selfcompetence model. I raise the research questions and specify my hypotheses. In Chapter 5, I describe the construction of Social and Task Competence Scale. I present evidence of the reliability and factor structure of the Social and Task Competence Scale. I concluded that scale revisions were needed. In Chapter 6, I present evidence of the reliability, factor structure and predictive validity of the revised Social and Task Competence Scale and Self-Protection Scale. I describe the results of an experiment that investigated the interaction of task setting, social competence, task competence and selfprotection. I concluded that the measures predicted performance. In Chapter 7, I investigate the factor structure and reliability of the revised Social and Task Competence Scale and revised Self-Protection Scale. I provide evidence of the convergent and discriminant validity of these measures with reliable measures of self-competence, selfesteem, self-monitoring, personality and social desirability. In Chapter 8, I investigate the factor structure and reliability of the Social and Task Competence Scale and Self-Protection Scale after final revisions and show that these measures are acceptable for use in scientific research. I present evidence of their convergent validity with a valid andreliable measure of emotional intelligence, and describe experimental results that supported the hypothesised relationships between perceived task difficulty, social competence, task competence and self-protection and task performance. In Chapter 9, I discuss the implications of my research for self-competence theory, self-regulation and self-esteem and the prediction of social and task performance in organisations.
