A Rasch Analysis of the Chinese-version Multidimensional Sense of Humor ScaleWang, Chia-chi 26 July 2010 (has links)
This study aims at revising the Chinese-version Multidimensional Sense of Humor Scale (Ho, Chik, & Thorson, 2008) using Rasch analysis, and to compare differences between two kinds of data collection¡Xweb-based questionnaire and paper-and-pencil questionnaire. Participants were 634 (sample 1) and 587 (sample 2) undergraduate students respectively for item revision and validation. Sample 2 were grouped into 4 groups to test differences between the two kinds of data collection. Rasch Rating Scale Model analysis was used to assess model-data fit, and MANCOVA was employed to compare the differences between the web-based and paper-and-pencil questionnaires.
The results indicated that three dimensions of the revised 18-item scale¡Xhumor production, attitudes towards humor, and coping humor¡Xshowed good model-data fit. All items had no statistically significant differential item functioning in genders (boys and girls) and in ways of testing (the web-based and the paper-and-pencil). Reliabilities for humor production, attitudes towards humor, and coping humor were .89, .81, and .81 respectively. The revised scale was further examined through construct-related validity through general self-efficacy and emotional adaptive ability. Furthermore, only the dimension of attitudes towards humor had a statistically significant difference in ways of testing. Suggestions for future research on developing instrument of sense of humor were proposed.

The Impact of Teachers¡¦Physical Attractiveness and Sense of Humor on Learning Attention and EfficiencyTsai, Chih-Yung 11 September 2012 (has links)
Attractive people are more likely to be considered as having better abilities, personalities, and interpersonal relationships. Does the physical attractiveness of a teacher affect the first impression of students of the teacher, and further affect learning concentration and achievement?
Second, humor is a type of philosophy and wisdom. People with a good sense of humor are more approachable and have more advantages in interpersonal relationships. Is a humorous teacher capable of creating a happy learning environment to enhance the learning concentration and achievement of students?
Junior teachers spend less time teaching and they are typically viewed less favorably compared to senior teachers regarding knowledge structure, teaching strategy, and their understanding of students¡¦ learning difficulties. Are senior teachers with many years of experience capable of improving the learning concentration and achievements of students because they have more teaching experience and progress?
In this study, we attempt to understand the influence of teacher characteristics on the learning concentration and achievements of students. Therefore, we used a user within the quasi-experimental method. Teachers with various levels of physical attractiveness, senses of humor, and years of teaching experience were selected to teach students. The learning concentration and achievement of the students were analyzed and compared. The results were as shown below:
First, the results of learning concentration showed that the physical attractiveness of a teacher is negatively correlated with learning concentration. The sense of humor of a teacher is positively correlated with learning concentration. Years of teaching experience is positively correlated with learning concentration. Teachers¡¦ physical attractiveness, sense of humor, and years of teaching experience have an interactive effect on learning concentration.
Second, results on learning achievement showed that the physical attractiveness of a teacher is not significantly correlated with learning performance. The years of teaching experience of a teacher is not significantly correlated with learning performance. The sense of humor of a teacher is positively correlated with learning achievement. The interactions among factors such as teachers¡¦ physical attractiveness, sense of humor, and years of teaching experience did not show significant correlation with learning achievement
According to the results of this study, we suggest that the myth about physical attractiveness should be dispelled, and that educational training regarding teachers¡¦ senses of humor should be strengthened. We recommend that future research include in-depth investigations on the differences between Asians and Caucasians regarding physical attractiveness and teacher charisma.

最後,本研究根據資料分析的結果進行討論,並對實務與未來研究提出建議。 / This study attempted to discover the extent of Taiwanese college students’ public speaking anxiety (PSA) and to investigate how the college students’ public speaking anxiety (PSA), sense of humor, and emotion regulation related to creativity and career choice. Eight hundred and sixty-three college students (male = 290, female = 573) completed a self-report survey which consists of five instruments: Public Speaking Anxiety Scale, Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, Humor Coping Scale, Creative Behavior Scale, and Career Choice Scale. Results indicate that more than 50% college students reported having PSA. Female students reported more PSA feelings than did male students. During the speaking, male students use more skills such as interacting with audience to lower their anxiety than did female students. The more students preferred to use reappraisal or calm down emotion regulation strategy, the less public speaking anxiety they felt, the more they used positive strategies such as preparing before speaking to reduce anxiety, and the more they learned from past speaking experience to have sufficient preparation, take the audience into consideration, etc for their future public speech. Students having lower PSA and coping with life events with a sense of humor in their life had more creative behavior and diffusion of creative ideas, and preferred to choose jobs requiring public speech. Suppression was found to be negatively correlated with use of active PSA coping strategies. Use of active PSA coping strategies were found to be positively correlated with sense of humor, creativity and jobs requiring public speech. Implications for education and future research are discussed.
