The impact of bullying on the adolescent’s sense of selfAnderson, Gail Alice 21 August 2008 (has links)
The goal of this study was to investigate the impact of physical, verbal and social bullying in high school on the adolescent’s sense of self, thereby improving the knowledge base and insight of counsellors who work with victims of bullying. The objectives of this study were: <ul><li>To build a knowledge base on the problem of bullying using existing literature. The knowledge base was used to form a holistic picture of the problem.</li> <li>To empirically investigate the impact that bullying in the school has on the adolescent’s sense of self.</li> <li>To provide conclusions and recommendations for teachers of school A as well as counsellors who, in the counselling setting, work with bullied children. </li></ul> This quantitative study endeavoured to answer the following research question: “What is the impact of bullying on the adolescent’s sense of self.” The researcher aimed to use the statistical analysis of the empirical study to improve the helping profession’s understanding of the phenomenon. This may lead to more successful intervention strategies on behalf of these adolescents. The study was feasible, as it was within the financial and practical means of the researcher. She had access to the school as she was employed there and obtained permission from the school, Department of Education, parents of participants, the participants themselves and The Ethical Committee of the University of Pretoria. The following themes emerged from the data analysis (when the male and female adolescents’ results were separated) namely: <ul><li>Physical bullying does not affect any parts of the sense of self of the female adolescent but does affect the physical and creative self of the male.</li> <li>Social bullying impacts every part of the female adolescent self but only affects the emotional, behavioural and creative sense of self of the male.</li> <li>Verbal bullying has an impact on every part of the female adolescents sense of self and affects all parts of the male sense of self except the physical and intellectual sense of self.</li></ul> From the research findings, recommendations were made on a micro, macro and exo- level. On a micro-level, this included improved intervention and prevention programmes in schools. On macro-level the researcher is of the opinion that the Department of Education of various districts need to ensure that policies are put in place as well as to support individual schools in their endeavours to stop bullying. On a meso-level, legislation changes and enforcement of the Bill of Human rights in schools are recommended. The primary school girl's perception of body image and the influence thereof on her sense-of-selfBurger, Inanda 14 August 2008 (has links)
The researcher embarked on this study, as the need was identified to investigate whether girls in primary schools have a realistic body image. The hypothesis was made that pressure from society, the media and parents might have a negative influence on a girl’s body image. The goal of this qualitative study was thus to determine how the primary school girl views her body and the influence this view has on her sense-of-self. It was anticipated that the outcome of the study would equip the researcher and social work colleagues with information that can be used in order to make parents and teachers aware of the pressures children experience and the effect this has on their sense-of-self. The exploratory study endeavoured to answer the following research questions: How does the primary school girl view her body, and how does this influence her sense-of-self? The objectives for this study were the following: <ul> <li>To provide a knowledge base on body image, sense-of-self and the perceptions primary school girls have regarding their bodies, based on a literature review.</li> <li>To use gestalt play therapy techniques to investigate the influence of perceptions regarding body image on the sense-of-self.</li> <li>To investigate primary school girls’ body image by means of an empirical study.</li> <li>To draw conclusions and make recommendations regarding the primary school girl’s perception of body image and the influence thereof on her sense-of-self.</li></ul> The study was feasible and consent was gained from the parents, respondents and organization where the study was done. The researcher studied with a bursary and costs were therefore covered by this. Eight respondents were selected at the researcher’s discretion by using certain criteria for selection. Care was given in selecting respondents who were representative of girls in the middle childhood phase. Five themes emerged from the study, namely sensory awareness, body image, the development of body image, the sense-of-self and the link between the sense-of-self and body image. Sub-themes were also identified from these five themes. Two consecutive play therapy sessions were used as data collection methods. From the empirical findings it is evident that the primary school girl’s perception of body image is largely based on the opinions and feedback from significant others. Self talk and self-statements play an important role in the formation of body image in the primary school girl. The study further indicates that body image has a direct influence on all aspects of the primary school girl’s sense-of-self and that a preoccupation with body size and shape amongst primary school girls is common. All of the respondents had hang-ups with regards to some aspect of their physical bodies, wished that they weighed less and indicated that they would want to change something about their bodies. It thus seems that girls in their middle childhood are particularly vulnerable to having a negative body image. From the research findings several conclusions and recommendations were made such as professionals needing to be aware of the potential negative impact that the media, peers and parents have on a child’s body image and sense-of-self. The recommendation was further made that professionals should encourage teachers, parents and child care workers to realize that in order for a child to develop a healthy sense-of-self and accept the way she looks, she has to receive positive feedback from significant others in her life. This study indicates that the primary school girl’s body image is fragile, and that significant others, the media and peers play an important role in the formation of a positive body image in children. / Dissertation (MSD)--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Social Work and Criminology / unrestricted

A Psychoanalytic Interpretation : Jay Gatsby’s Id, Superego, Ego, and Core Issues / En psykoanalytisk tolkning : Jay Gatsbys id, superego, ego och centrala problemMiranda O'Shea, Flavia January 2019 (has links)
The present essay attempts a psychoanalytic interpretation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Jay Gatsby’s id, superego, ego, and core issues. The first stage of the paper offers an analysis of Gatsby’s id, superego and ego; and finds that the id largely rules his behaviour, with few instances where the ego takes control and manifests the superego. The second stage proposes that three psychoanalytic core issues are identifiable in the character of Gatsby: fear of abandonment, low self-esteem and insecure or unstable sense of self. Through the lens of Psychoanalytic Criticism, the present essay looks at fictional literature in order to gain insight into the human psyche, in hopes of discussing and spreading awareness about mental health.

The use of gestalt therapy to re-write life scriptHitge, Erika 30 November 2006 (has links)
The aim of this research was to determine how Gestalt Therapy could be utilised to re-write life script. Transactional Analysis terminology was translated into Gestalt Therapy, especially the terms life script, life position and re-writing in the literature study. Gestalt Therapy concepts of importance for the research were also discussed in the literature study. An empirical study was conducted, involving one respondent, for whom Gestalt Therapy sessions were provided with the aim of determining how life script could be re-written through such intervention. Gestalt Therapy concepts and life script concepts were identified during the therapy process. A re-written life script was formulated by the researcher corresponding with the level of functioning of the respondent during therapy and in relation to the respondent's life position. The researcher deducts from the entire study, but especially from the empirical study that life script can be re-written by means of utilising Gestalt Therapy. / Social Work / M. Diac. (Play Therapy)

Barthélemy, Claudine 09 1900 (has links)
To do this, we had to define various components that surround our main concept. We refer to areas of choice on the organization and the
organization of working time, areas of choice on the remuneration, the training....
The description of these practices, which are found to be in the heart of the concept of «cafeteria HRM », enable us to realize that human resources management knows a new side, it is mainly explained by the fact that companies desire today to get closer to the expectations of their employees by offering them a number of areas of choice in their jobs. Managers in human resources try to customize practices, which requires flexibility on the part of organizations
Thus, this study allowed us to present a theoretical model that aims to test the influence of the flexibility of choosing different areas of «cafeteria HRM » on the intention to quit among employees. Results obtained using data from a Haitian bank and multivariate analysis highlight the significant impact of some practices and the mediating role of sense of self-determination in the employees’ intention to quit their job.
Keywords: Intention of voluntary departure, flexibility practices of «cafeteria HRM », a
sense of self-determination

An artificial sense of self : A micro-ethnographic study of co-dependencyBohlin, Ingegerd January 2022 (has links)
