Investigations Into The Program and Typology of a Contemporary Public Thermal Bath House

Schumacher, Brian 01 January 2013 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis presents an inquiry into the nature of and history behind public thermal bathhouses, as well as a design proposal for a new and uniquely site-based public thermal bathhouse structure, the form of which has been developed with an eye toward typology. The research and writings of this thesis explore the topic of public thermal bathhouses, both as historic phenomena and viable places of congregation still relevant and of great importance to healthy and vital contemporary communities. An effort has been made to demonstrate that written histories, archaeological landmarks, and contemporary international urban communities throughout the world provide ample documentation in support of the notion that public thermal bath houses both served and continue to serve an integral role within healthy, vital and sustainable cultures. The physical modeling, drawings and sketches of this thesis develop ideas about form and materiality, and explore and bring together discreet architectural phenomena into a singular, formal, proposal for a prototypical public bath house typology, one whose program and form are well suited to a contemporary small town within the United States. At present, the ritual of public bathing exists within the United States, at best, far outside main stream culture as a singular, sensational event such as a hot spring or a commercial, private day spa- neither of which retain any semblance of the core principals, typological rituals, degree of sensory immersion, or whole-body therapy that define the essence of a more traditional and timeless public bathing experience. It is the intention of this thesis to present a compelling case for why a public bathhouse not only could exist on the current American landscape, but moreover why it should, and if so, what form it might take.

Reflections on Sexuality, Sensuality, and Painting

Hollowell, Loie 09 May 2012 (has links)
The written component of my thesis will take the form of an extended artist statement in which I discuss all six paintings included in my thesis exhibition. A major theme of my work is sexuality, specifically female sexuality. This thesis will begin by looking at the three miniature paintings that spearheaded the investigation of this theme. I will examine the generalized and personal feminist symbolism that these paintings contain. The two works that followed the miniatures are depictions of sexual interactions between my husband and myself. I will explain the significance of my depictions and relate them to the work of contemporary painters who deal with the same subject matter. The last painting in this series is a seven by eight foot landscape. I will explain how it relates to my figurative work and why nature has a constant presence in all of my paintings. Lastly, I will clarify why the lighting and composition of my paintings takes the form of traditional stage sets.

Die Verführung des Textes : literarische Konzepte im Spannungsfeld von Sinnlichkeit und Pornographie ; untersucht an Elfriede Jelinek "Lust", Michel Houellebecq "Die Möglichkeit einer Insel", Charlotte Roche "Feuchtgebiete" / Textual temptation : literary concepts between sensuality and pornographie ; an investigation of Elfriede Jelinek "Lust", Michel Houellebecq "Die Möglichkeit einer Insel", Charlotte Roche "Feuchtgebiete"

Janitzek, Juliane January 2008 (has links)

Piety and sensuality in Massenet's operas Manon and Thaïs / Hanli Stapela

Stapela, Hanli January 2015 (has links)
This study explores the manifestation of piety and sensuality in the operas Manon and Thaïs by Jules Massenet. These two themes are prevalent in Massenet’s operas as well as his oratorios, although it is not clear why this is so. His admiration and love for the human voice and his ability to compose beautiful melodies are reflected in the fact that he composed primarily for the lyric theatre. Piety and sensuality in Manon and Thaïs are articulated predominantly by the eponymous female characters. In order to understand the characters and the motivations that steer their lives, it was necessary to gain an understanding of the socio-historical context of piety and sensuality. This understanding was reached through means of a traditional literature review, which also shed light on the nineteenth-century Zeitgeist and its influence on Massenet and his work. This is a hermeneutic study conducted in light of an interpretive paradigm. The libretti of Manon and Thaïs were explored by means of a close reading to identify sections dominated by piety and sensuality. Following the example of Lawrence Kramer, a combination of close reading and analysis was used to look at the ways in which piety and sensuality are articulated in the music. It became clear that Massenet used various compositional techniques to differentiate between piety and sensuality in his music scores. These techniques were applied with such skill that a listener can identify these two themes through close listening. / DMus (Performance), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2015

This research aims to elect certain isotopic traces which confirm the presence of “eroticism rates Machado's speech”. The proposal is to point out the obvious erotic vicissitudes under deep feelings of eroticism in various forms. It is proposed to cut, analyze, in Machado's prose, the unfolding of erotic prohibitions that form in the context of sensuality and seduction game. The research proposal involves asking the erotic theme, over the short stories and novels the selected theme corpus through the basic norms of internal analysis of the narratives. Our reading of Machado's texts, in thesis, search sipping word for word, spoken and unspoken, peering into their visible senses and hidden, suggested and hidden through semiotic signs contextualized in their environments, situations and conditions that present textual subsidies seized the erotic situation that we propose to investigate. The theoretical instruments that contributed to the realization of research are protected under references about the critical Machado's fortune related to the topic at clipping. Our analysis is interrelated to the thoughts of authors who defended literary theoretical assumptions, ideological, philosophical and psychoanalytic in search of possible interpretations of erotic puzzles by which the human condition is confronted. So eroticism in Machado de Assis, not flung open and, yes, insinuates itself. It is formed between sobriety and lightness to the morbidity of limits in proximity to a latent irony. The erotic proposition is not widespread and is not made in the context of gratuity, because the author is guided by cause and effect. Eroticism is paradoxical because it does not appear fully and neither hides in its essence. Thus, the erotic indices take various forms, so seize the body together with the ideas, in other words, Machado de Assis bare their physical characters and psychologically whose predominant reason restrains the free passionate outbursts without descriptive prejudice to the facts narrated about the hopeless desires rooted both to the body, (vertically) and psychological speculation, awareness, (horizontal).
