An ICE concept optimized for Series Hybrid Application : A dive into how an ICE pairs with a Series hybrid drivetrainWallenberg, Axel, Frosteman, Alexander January 2019 (has links)
This report is a theoretical study of the potential an ICE (internal combustion engine) has when combined with the load case of a high-performance series hybrid drivetrain. It breaks down the different theoretical variables that affect engine efficiency and possible limitations that arise. The report then moves on to specifying the current emerging technologies associated with increasing engine efficiency such as active, and passive prechamber ignition. The different technologies strengths and weaknesses were then compared with each other to decide the best strategies and technologies to move forward with. Here efficiency gain potential was compared to price, performance and complexity. The different technologies were compared in two separate steps firstly the technologies were compared individually, then the best systems were compared to different engine configurations in an iterative process. Here the most balanced solution was found using a passive prechamber to allow higher compression ratio while allowing better timing control. This was later combined with a Miller cycle strategy resulting in a theoretical efficiency improvement of ~8%. This would potentially allow a high performance vehicle to match a midrange diesel engine in fuel economy.

Design, simulation, and construction of a series hybrid electric vehicleNorthcott, Daniel Ross 27 September 2007 (has links)
This thesis evaluates a series hybrid electric drivetrain design for use in parking patrol vehicles. Due to the particular attributes of this application, it is proposed that the design would improve the energy efficiency of such a vehicle. The scheme is evaluated in depth through the use of electromagnetic transient simulation tools, which are used to create a highly accurate model of the vehicle. A prototype vehicle of the same design is built, and used to verify and improve the accuracy of the simulation model. The simulation model is then used to predict the energy efficiency of the series hybrid design for parking patrol. This simulation based design strategy is proposed as a method for more rapid and cost effective design of hybrid electric vehicles. / October 2007

Elhybridteknik i bandvagnssystemet : Den militära nyttan i logistikfunktionen / Hybrid electric technology in tracked vehicles : Effects on military logisticsAndersson, Tobias January 2014 (has links)
Fossil fuels are finite resources and in a report from 2013, the Swedish Defence Material Administration encourages the Swedish Armed Forces to start planning for the transition to alternative propulsion systems to reduce its dependency of fossil fuels. The most promising technology to bridge the gap between pure electric propulsion and today’s internal combustion engine is hybrid electric technology. This essay examines the implications a series hybrid solution would have on military logistics. The method used includes analysis of both scientific reports and of survey answers from personnel in the SAF with several years of experience working with the tracked vehicle Bandvagn 309. The analysis of the survey answers is completed with interviews with these people and others working at BAE Systems who contributes with technical expertise. The essay will conclude that a series hybrid solution would have a positive impact on military logistics even though it is hard to specify how great the effect would be due to technical uncertainties and the fact that the technology is yet to be tested in combat.

Hybrid electric propulsion units are a potential alternative to the reduction of fuel consumption and pollutant emissions, when used in public transport vehicles. The obtained results proved that the strategy based on fuzzy systems improved the fuel economy, allowing the internal combustion engine to supply less power than the use of the strategies based on rules. Therefore, the use of fuzzy systems in the energy management of the vehicle allows for the adoption of a less potent and cheaper internal combustion engine, without compromising the vehicles performance. Analysis and control of a hybrid vehicle powered by free-piston energy converterHansson, Jörgen January 2006 (has links)

The introduction of hybrid powertrains has made it possible to utilise unconventional engines as primary power units in vehicles. The free-piston energy converter (FPEC) is such an engine. It is a combination of a free-piston combustion engine and a linear electrical machine. The main features of this configuration are high efficiency and a rapid transient response.

In this thesis the free-piston energy converter as part of a hybrid powertrain is studied. One issue of the FPEC is the generation of pulsating power due to the reciprocating motion of the translator. These pulsations affect the components in the powertrain. However, it is shown that these pulsations can be handled by a normal sized DC-link capacitor bank. In addition, two approaches to reduce these pulsations are suggested: the first approach is using generator force control and the second approach is based on phase-shifted operation of two FPEC units. The latter approach results in higher frequency and lower amplitude of the pulsations, which reduce the capacitor losses.

The FPEC start-up requirements are analysed and by choosing the correct amplitude of the generator force during start-up the energy consumption can be minimised.

The performance gain of utilising the FPEC in a medium sized series hybrid electric vehicle (SHEV) is also studied. An FPEC model suitable for vehicle simulation is developed and a series hybrid powertrain, with the same performance as the Toyota Prius, is dimensioned and modelled.

Optimisation is utilised to find a lower limit on the SHEV's fuel consumption for a given drivecycle. In addition, three power management control strategies for the FPEC system are investigated: two load-following strategies using one and two FPEC units respectively and one strategy based on the ideas of an equivalent consumption minimisation (ECM) proposed earlier in the literature.

The results show a significant decrease in fuel consumption, compared to a diesel-generator powered SHEV, just by replacing the diesel-generator with an FPEC. This result is improved even more by using two FPEC units to generate the propulsion power, as this increases the efficiency at low loads. The ECM control strategy does not reduce the fuel consumption compared to the load-following strategies but gives a better utilisation of the available power sources.
