Psigoterapeutiese hantering van patologiese skuld- en skaamgevoelens / Psychotherapeutic handling of guilt and shame feelings

Snyman, Annemarie January 2000 (has links)
The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the phenomena guilt and shame. For effective diagnosis a differentiation between the two emotions was made. It appears that shame feelings focus directly towards the self. Guilt feelings focus on "wrong" or neglected deeds. In view of literature and empirical investigations guidelines were set up for the handling of guilt and shame. A questionnaire was developed to identify guilt and shame, to determine the intensity of these feelings and to differentiate between rational and irrational guilt and shame. Results of the empirical study indicated that the psychotherapeutic model and questionnaire were effective in the treatment of guilt and shame. / Psychology of Education / M. Ed. (Voorligting)

The transformational healing journey from universal shame : a phenomenological-grounded theory inquiry

Onslow, Christopher E, University of Lethbridge. Faculty of Education January 2009 (has links)
A phenomenological-grounded theory methodology was utilized to explore the transformational healing journeys of five Caucasian men in recovery from pervasive shame in their lives. An overview of several western approaches to treating shame are included, as well as two predominant Universal Developmental theories of shame and its link to the resolution of narcissism. During the thematic analysis of the interviews, thirteen themes were derived, which constituted a chronological depiction of the story of shame, as it unfolded in the lives of the participants. Additionally, an in-depth look at the families of origin, and the beginnings of shame in the participants’ lives is presented, as well as a picture of how their lives are now, after recovery from their shame. Implications for counseling were addressed. / ix, 196 leaves ; 29 cm

No. of bitstreams: 1 jonatas_tiburtino_santos.pdf: 1364933 bytes, checksum: 5b5ff5fb9b40df5dd5a2ef28bb7dec00 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-07-07 / The present study has as its research theme the function of the shame in the constitution of the subjectivity and in nowadays culture, and it questions the consequences of its decline in the present days. To approach such a theme we theoretically thought about the points from which Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan present approaches and distinctions about the function of shame in the constitution of the subjectivity. Aiming to achieve such an objective a bibliographic review of the concept of shame in Freud’s work was made for the purpose of – effectively – detect the role that was given in the constitution of the subjectivity; the consequences of its decline in the subjectivities were investigated and what is its role in the malaise nowadays, according to the Lacanian view; the approaching points and the distinctions between Sigmund Freud’s work and Jacques Lacan’s teaching about the function of shame in its constitution were pointed out. Such research found, in Freud’s work, that the shame favors the constitution of the subjectivity and takes part in the formation of the mechanisms that specify the neurotic processes. In the Lacanian teaching, the master significant degeneracies as the alteration that precedes and, in the scope of the affections, caused the decline of shame, whose consequences tell about the transformations in a relationship of the subject with the law, and the enjoyment, besides its gradual clearance related to the significants of the Great Other.

Asian but Never Asian Enough: Racial Identity Invalidation, Internalized Racial Oppression, Racial Socialization, and Self-Esteem in Asian-White Emerging Adults

Hunt, Emily January 2023 (has links)
The present study integrated Critical Multiracial Theory (MultiCrit) and Minority Stress Theory and examined the associations between racial identity invalidation, a racial stressorunique to biracial or multiracial individuals, internalized racial oppression and self-esteem in a sample of 211 biracial Asian-White emerging adults. The study specifically explored four domains of internalized racial oppression unique to biracial individuals (internalized racial inferiority, minority identity shame, distancing from minority identity, colorism). The study also sought to examine whether racial socializations strategies unique to multiracial families(multiracial identity socialization, navigating multiple heritages socialization, preparation for monoracism socialization, and race-conscious socialization) moderated the relationship between racial identity invalidation and internalized racial oppression. Results from a path analysis indicated that there was a significant positive relationship between racial identity invalidation and minority identity shame, a significant positive relationship between internalized racial inferiority and self-esteem, and a significant negative relationship between minority identity shame and self-esteem. Minority identity shame also significantly mediated the relationship between racial identity invalidation and self-esteem. Preparation for monoracism socialization significantly moderated the relationship between racial identity invalidation and minority identity shame. Implications for future research and clinical practice with biracial Asian-White individuals are discussed.
