Recall of compound words in simple and complex span tasks

There has been little research exploring whether different memory processes (i.e. related to short term memory (STM), working memory (WM) and long term memory (LTM) may be differentially sensitive to representation and processing aspects of compound words. This study investigated how compound words are represented in STM in immediate serial recall tasks and in WM in complex span tasks that combine processing and storage demands. The simple span STM task was comprised of solely a list of memory words, whereas the two complex span WM tasks interleaved sentence processing between presentation of memory words. They varied in the presence of a pause after presentation of each memory word and before onset of the following distractor sentence for processing. The absence of a pause was intended to minimize opportunity for subvocal rehearsal, whereas the presence of a pause encouraged rehearsal. To increase chances of recombination errors for error analyses, lists of memoranda were manipulated so that each set (list) of four compound words contained one “lure” pair (e.g. pinstripe + warhead = pinhead) in which the modifier and head constituents from separate compound words could recombine to form a new, legal word. Recall performance was better in the simple span and complex span pause tasks compared to the complex span no pause task. Whole compound and left constituent frequencies played opposite roles, helping and harming, respectively. Error types reflecting decomposition of the compound words to their constituents were more common in simple span than in complex span. Omissions were more common in complex span. We discuss how different memory processes may be differentially sensitive to representation and processing aspects, and how recall of compound words is affected by various lexical variables. / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

The experimental variation of the transition temperature with volume change can be understood within a simple scaling model. Microservice architecture, which involves breaking down applications into smaller and loosely coupled components, is becoming increasingly common in the development of modern systems. Connections between these components can be established in various ways. One of these approaches is event-driven architecture, where components in the system communicate asynchronously with each other through message queues.  AWS, Amazon Web Services, the largest provider of cloud-based services, offers such a messaging queue: SQS, Amazon Simple Queue Service, which can be integrated with SNS, Amazon Simple Notification Service, to enable "one-to-many" asynchronous communication.  An alternative tool is Apache Kafka, created by LinkedIn and later open-sourced under the Apache Software Foundation. Apache Kafka is an event logging and streaming platform that can also function as a message queue in an event-driven architecture.  The authors of this thesis have been commissioned by Scania to compare and evaluate the performance of these two tools and investigate whether there are use cases where one might be more suitable than the other. To achieve this, two prototypes were developed, each prototype consisting of a producer microservice and a consumer microservice. These prototypes were then used to conduct latency and load tests by producing messages and measuring the time interval until they were consumed.  The results of the tests show that Apache Kafka has a lower average latency than SNS/SQS and scales more efficiently with increasing data volumes, making it more suitable for use cases involving real-time data streaming. Its potential as a message bus for loosely coupled components in the system is also evident. In this context, SNS/SQS is equally valuable, as it operates as a dedicated message bus with good latency and offers a user-friendly and straightforward setup process. / Mikrotjänstarkitektur, som innebär att applikationer bryts ned till mindre och löst kopplade komponenter, är något som blir allt vanligare vid utvecklingen av moderna system. El español es un idioma disperso y hablado en varias partes del mundo, para asegurar que esta grande diversidad en la lengua española no se pierda es importante que prestemos atención a las diferentes variedades y no solo a una variedad específica en la enseñanza del español. En este trabajo investigamos el uso del Pretérito Perfecto Compuesto dentro de la zona lingüística de Río de la Plata donde su uso claramente es infrarrepresentado en comparación con el Pretérito Perfecto Simple. El punto de partida es la teoría sociolingüística y el estudio tiene por objetivo averiguar si las variables sociolingüísticas sexo, edad o nivel de educación puedan constituir factores decisivos en la elección de una de las dos formas. Los datos provienen del corpus oral de CORPES XXI, donde el material es categorizado por zona lingüística y por variables sociolingüísticas. Los resultados demuestran que, en cada variable por separado, una alternativa usa el PPC en mayor medida que las otras alternativas. Cuando analizamos la combinación de las variables, los resultados indican que los que más usan el PPC son personas entre 35 y 54 años con una educación superior, y las personas que menos usan el PPC son mujeres de 55 o más años con una educación superior.

Screening av läsförmåga i årskurs 1: Nationellt bedömningsstöd + kompletterande tester = sant? / A survey on teachers' practices when screening for reading ability in grade 1 in Sweden - Is the national assessment support considered to be enough?

Sedan 2016 utförs ett nationellt bedömningsstöd i svenska grundskola årskurs 1-3. Bedömningsstödet är utformat för att ge en samlad bild över elevernas kunskapsutveckling i de tidiga skolåren och genomförs i början och slutet av årskurs 1. Syftet med vår studie är att undersöka hur skolor runt om i Sverige kompletterar Bedömningsstödet i årskurs 1 med andra tester för att finna elever i lässvårigheter, samt pedagogers åsikter gällande Bedömningsstödet. Våra forskningsfrågor var följande; anser pedagoger att Bedömningsstödet ger tillräcklig information för att hitta lässvaga elever eller finns det mer att önska och i så fall vad?  I vilken utsträckning kompletteras Bedömningsstödet i årskurs 1 för att identifiera elever i lässvårigheter? Vilka material kompletterar i så fall skolorna med och varför? Studien genomfördes med hjälp av en enkätundersökning som resulterade i en svarsfrekvens av 356 svar. Resultatet visar att endast 23% av respondenterna är nöjda med Bedömningsstödet gällande identifiering av elevers läsförmåga. Respondenterna lyfter att förändringar behövs och majoriteten av respondenterna kompletterar bedömningsstödet med andra tester för en djupare bedömning. / Since 2016, a national assessment support has been carried out in Swedish primary school grades 1-3. The assessment support is designed to give an overall picture of the students' knowledge development in the early school years and is carried out at the beginning and end of grade 1. The purpose of our study is to investigate how schools around Sweden supplement the assessment support in grade 1 with other tests to find students with reading difficulties, as well as educators' opinions regarding the assessment support. Our research questions were the following; do educators think that the assessment support provides sufficient information to find reading-disabled students or is there more to be desired and if so, what? To what extent is the assessment support in grade 1 supplemented to identify students with reading difficulties? If so, which materials do the schools supplement with and why? The study was carried out using a questionnaire which resulted in 356 responses. The result shows that only 23% of the respondents are satisfied with the assessment support regarding the identification of students' reading ability. The respondents highlight that changes are needed, and the majority of respondents supplement the assessment support with other tests for a deeper assessment.
