Do analÃgico ao Digital: As TransformaÃÃes na ProduÃÃo dos InstantÃneos FotogrÃficos do Cotidiano / From the Analog to the digital: Transformations in the the production of the family snapshots

Camila Leite de AraÃjo 04 June 2010 (has links)
The analog photo album allows us a memory of a past, within those archives we keep the picture of our beloved ones and the moments that we socially choose to represent us. Digital cameras, on the other side, provide an extensive photographic production which results in differentiated postures before the camera and extensive digital archives. One consequences of this visualization of existence is the constant recording of intimate moments, while the young legitimized digital photography as their tool of identity and communication, both featuring themselves and the contemporary image as transience and hybridity. Therefore, the contemporary is characterized by heterogeneous images with visual styles not classified topologically. Furthermore, with the digital technology arose the social virtual communities like facebook, orkut, fotolog and flickr expanded more the complexity of the process and began to exhibit the private moments in a public space. Mitchell (2005) brought to the scientific discourse which deals with imagery and text, the term âPictorial Turnâ, arguing that the images around us transform not only the world and identities, but have an increasingly important role in the construction of the social reality. This determines that the snapshot should not be understood as a mere repetition and recycling of past models, but has to deal with new issues emerging from contemporary process of negotiation and contestation, representation of the senses and pleasure. In an attempt to understand the transformations that the snapshots suffered from the transition from analog to digital, and thus understand the specific materials, aesthetic and social aspects of digital and analog photographic act, we performed a comparative analysis between two family albums: one analog and one digital.

A study of tutors' and students' perceptions and experiences of full-time college courses and apprenticeships in plumbing

Reddy, Simon January 2014 (has links)
There has been an increasing amount of interest shown in vocational education and apprenticeships in the early twenty-first century by successive governments and other parties connected with occupational training. However, the English further education sector has been described as ‘chronically under-researched’ (James and Biesta, 2007: 7), particularly in regard to narrative accounts of college education and pedagogy (Richardson, 2007) and there has been very little empirical research on pathways into the plumbing profession. This study explored teachers’ and students’ perceptions and experiences of both full-time college courses and apprenticeships in plumbing in order to deepen understanding of these particular types of vocational preparation. It also endeavoured to investigate whether the two different routes into plumbing appeared fit for purpose. Within an interpretive framework, data were collected using two main research methods. Ethnographic snapshot observations were recorded during lessons in three further education colleges and at the workplaces of five plumbing students and formal 1:1 semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 tutors and 14 students. The data were thematically analysed. From the many issues relating to the opportunities offered and the challenges posed by the different pathways into plumbing that this study identified, three key findings emerged. First, there was strong evidence of a dislocation between theory and practical learning, both within the college setting for full-time students and between the workplace and college settings for apprenticed learners. This had implications for both the quality of learning and the learners’ levels of motivation. Second, the study revealed the importance of supervised work experience that was centred on long-term acquisition of knowledge and relationship development for apprentices with support from their college tutors and co-workers. Finally, the findings showed the importance of authentic assessment. It was found that simulations in college could not adequately replicate the experience of doing the job in the real world. Given the inherent risks and problems regularly encountered in the plumbing profession, this signalled significant health and safety implications.

A Structural analysis and visual abstraction of the pictorial in the Aeneid, I-VI

Shaw, Rayford Wesley 06 1900 (has links)
The pictorial elements of the first six books of the Aeneid can be evidenced through an examination of its structural components. With commentaries on such literary devices as parallels and antipodes, interwoven themes, cyclic patterns, and strategic placement of words in the text, three genres of painting are treated individually in Chapter 1 to illustrate the poet's consistency of design and to prove him a craftsman of the visual arts. In the first division, "Cinematic progression," attention is directed to the language which conveys movement and frequentative action, with special emphasis placed on specific passages whose verbal components possess sculptural or third-dimensional traits and contribute to the "spiral" and "circle" motifs, the appropriate visual agents for animation. Depiction of mythological subjects comprises the second division entitled "Cameos and snapshots." Three selections, dubbed monstra, are explicated with such cross references as to illustrate the poet's use of epithets which he distributes passim to elicit verbal echoes of other passages. The final division, "The Vergilian landscape," addresses two major themes, antithetical in nature, the martial and the pastoral. Their sequential juxtaposition in the text renders a marked contrast in mood which is manifested pictorially in the transition from darkness to light. A panoramic chiaroscuro emerges which is the tapestry against which Aeneas makes his sojourn through the Underworld. It is the perfect backdrop to accompany the overriding theme of "things hidden," res latentes, which encompasses a greater part of the epic and becomes the culminant motif of the paintings which comprise the visual presentation. Chapter 2 functions as a catalogue raisonne for art inspired by the Aeneid from early antiquity up to the present day. Such examples of artistic expression provide a continuum with which to appropriate Horace's maxim, ut pictura poesis, in their evaluation. The verbal exegeses in Chapter 1 have been programmed to comport with the thematic content of the visual presentation in Chapter 3, a critique exemplifying the transposition of the verbal to the pictorial. With these canvases I have attempted to render a new perspective of Vergil's epic in the genre of abstract expressionism. / Art / D. Litt. et Phil.
