A Case Study Exploring the Holistic Potential of Social Dance for an Autistic AdolescentJanuary 2018 (has links)
abstract: The purpose of this case study is to observe how social dance combined with somatic practices can encourage internal, physical perception and experiences of the body perceived from within for an adolescent boy with high functioning autism and dyspraxia; an impairment or immaturity of the organization of movement (Boon 7). More specifically, this research seeks to observe the impact that social dance instruction can have on an individual’s kinesthetic responsiveness, such as efficiency in movement patterning through increased movement awareness and somatic facilitation. In addition, this study seeks to observe the impact that social dance lessons could have on the participant’s communication and listening skills; attentiveness; initiation of movement, such as taking the role of a leader and lead patterns; organization of movements, such as performing movements within a specific order; and performance of movements that might lead to personal and social growth. The aim of the diploma thesis is to map the meanings of salsa in the life of recreational dancers. Pair salsa dance was intentionally chosen as a representative of the so-called social dance group, which is characterized by its unique improvisation and self-expression. The theoretical part will be devoted to key topics focused on salsa dance and improvisation, phenomenon of flow, self-transcendence, expression of emotions, dance movement therapy. In the theoretical part, we were interested in other professional research with similar topics. The empirical part of the diploma thesis deals with the research topic of the importance of salsa for recreational dancers. This research served as an exploratory study of salsa, which is not yet very psychologically explored. It is a qualitative research that uses analytical procedures with elements of grounded theory. Research data were obtained through an in-depth interview with 13 informants. We interpreted the resulting information to understand the mental states and processes on multiple levels in the context of salsa and its importance in the lives of recreational dancers. Throughout history, dance is a powerful tool for expression of self or community. Art, especially dance, became a way to react to societal shifts and stalemates through means of storytelling. Through my choreography, I used history of modern dance such as the mother of modern dance, Isadora Duncan, an incredibly influential choreographer, Martha Graham, and her famous protege, Merce Cunningham. I used a combination of their methodology to choreograph my intrapersonal journey with dance and life.

The aim of this dissertation is to find out the level of motoric abilities at younger school age children who take part in social dance. I tested the level of motoric abilities using the test battery Unifittest (6 - 60). I compared the level of motoric abilities at younger school age children who take part in social dance and at younger school age children who only attend PE lessons. I tried to find out the change of the level in motoric abilities at the two above mentioned groups. I also tried to discover the type and frequency of other sport activities which children regularly do in their free time. Empirically focused part of my thesis substantiate that children of the younger school age, who take part in social dance, achieved a bigger improvement of fitness and coordinative motoric abilities. The biggest improvement was in the test of flexibility. On the basis of the questionnaire survey I found out, that children of the younger school age who do not take part in social dance, very often devote to football in their leisure. This thesis deals with the musical and dance style known as "Salsa" which roots can be traced to the Caribbean of Latin America. In this work, salsa is investigated as a global phenomenon in the local context of Prague and at the same time as a commercialized product. In terms of salsa as a global phenomenon, the work deals with the characteristics of salsa as a social dance in the local context and tries to trace its social functions. In addition to the effects of the commercialization and tropicalized ideas of salsa and Latin American cultures on its form, the thesis also touches on topics such as internal negotiation and external construction of Latin American identity (latinidad), which are related to salsa as a global phenomenon and its commercialization. The work is based on several months of ethnographic research and semi- structured interviews conducted mainly with salseros from Latin America, the Czech Republic and others, not only European countries. <p>The purpose of this paper is to examine how the arrival of class society is expressed in the social dance of high society during the second half of the eighteenth century. The study is based on the idea that culture and society develope in interaction; that changes in the economic, political and social life determine the cultural expressions as well. What I wish to examine is whether cultural themes from the developing bourgeois culture – individualism, to be precise – is expressed in the social dance during the second half of the eigthteenth century. // The study shows that public balls definitely gave people a chance to show off on the dance floor in spite of social rank. The assemblies were open to everyone, and there were no formal distinction between the estates. The equality was enforced furthermore in the bal masques. // In spite of this formal equality, there are also signs of public assemblies not being quite the arenas for individual triumph beyond the boundaries of estate that they could be. Comments about dance and individuals are for example way more common in connection to private gatherings than public. When writing about public balls focus is primarily on the attender’s social rang, and more seldom on the dance at all. It’s clear that the mixing of estates was a source of agitation, and also that it was hard for peasants and merchants to compete with the nobility on their home ground. In theory the dance culture was boundary-crossing, but in reality the rift between the estates was still wide.</p>

The Development of a Three Minute Realtime Sampling Method to Measure Social Harmony during Interactions between Parents and their Toddlers with AutismCunningham, Isabel L. 08 1900 (has links)
Training parents of a child with autism to increase the frequency of their child's social behavior may improve the quality of parent-child interactions. The purpose of this methodological study was to develop a direct observation method for rapidly sampling social harmony between parents and their toddlers with autism during parent training interactions. The current study used a pre and post probe design, with benchmark comparisons to test the discriminability of the measurement protocol across two sets of data. The first set of data came from pre and post training videos from a parent training program for children with a diagnosis of autism or at risk for a diagnosis. The second set of data came from videos of typically developing toddlers and their parents. The results of the study show that the measurement system differentiated in the level of harmonious engagement between the benchmark sample and the sample including children diagnosed with autism. The results are discussed in the context of future directions and the utility of the measurement system for behavior analytic practices in parent training and other settings where rapport and complex interactional behaviors are an intervention priority.
