Anyone who has ever had the opportunity to observe small children when playing or learning something new or telling something and anyone who has ever had the op- portunity to talk to them must have noticed the children sometimes treat the reality around them in a strange way. These are the funny moments when one is surprised what children think and how they treat logic. As though small children lived in an odd world where the rules of logic are completely different. The famous Swiss psy- chologist noticed this peculiar children's thinking and described the intellectual egocentrism in children of preschool and early school age. Egocentrism does not affect only the children's logical thinking but also other aspects of children's think- ing and experience. This special "setting" of children's minds can be observed when the children are playing, in children's communication, in their drawings or in chil- dren's moral judgement. In the field of children's morals Piaget spoke of the moral realism. Under the influence of moral realism children when morally judging the moral situations presented to them do not concentrate on the essential elements of the story but rather on irrelevant circumstances such as material results of an action and other outside matters. Impact of migration to the UK on Lithuanian migrant family relationships

Since the opening of European borders to new EU member states, a large number of immigrants continue to arrive in the UK and specifically to the East Midlands and East Anglia. To date, little or no research has been conducted to understand their experience and adjustment in this part of the country. With my research I aimed to find out how Lithuanian emigration affected family relationships and to identify issues that families face when a member emigrates on his/her own. I conducted qualitative research using different methods of data collection: online (skype) and face-to-face interviews, focus group and remote discussion techniques. Data has been coded using NVivo8 and NVivo10 and analysed using grounded theory. Findings show that the transition stage, while a family lives apart, puts an enormous strain on relationships within a family. However, it does not lead to nor causes break ups provided the family was a close unit prior to migration. The final results support the emerging theory that if the family had good relationships back in Lithuania, then all challenges of migration would not break that bond. On the contrary, they would strengthen relationships. My findings answer the initial research question as to whether migration to the UK affects Lithuanian family relationships by suggesting that it does not any more than any other stressful life events, e.g. death, childbirth, job loss, illness, house move, etc. Findings suggest that, if families discuss matters and look for the solutions together, the negative impact of migration might be avoided or lessened. My research contributes to the knowledge by applying novelty frameworks such as grounded theory and Layder’s theory of social domains in order to analyse and understand the Lithuanian migration phenomenon in the UK, particularly in East Anglia and the East Midlands.

Podemos concluir desse dado que os adolescentes têm adquirido o hábito de beber cada vez mais cedo. Sob efeito do álcool, o adolescente pode envolver-se em situações de risco pessoal bem como acarretar injúrias a outrem. Considerando que a conduta de beber é construída socialmente, o conhecimento de como adolescentes categorizam essa conduta e quem consideram autoridade para regular o seu uso, é importante na elaboração de programas preventivos e de intervenção. A partir da constatação dessas questões este trabalho foi desenvolvido tendo como objetivos: identificar os adolescentes (de uma escola pública e de uma particular) que faziam uso abusivo de álcool e analisar como os mesmo viam este hábito e quem eles reconheciam como autoridade para controlá-lo. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que os jovens entrevistados não associam o hábito de beber abusivamente com questões morais. Acreditam que o comportamento de beber abusivamente está ligado aos domínios pessoais e prudenciais, ou seja, dizem respeito apenas a eles, e mesmo que as conseqüências advindas deste comportamento sejam prejudiciais a outros, não teriam relação com questões morais. Têm a crença de que necessitam passar por experiências próprias de bebedeiras e situações de risco para perceber a gravidade da situação. Portanto, propagandas, conselhos familiares, iniciativas das escolas da forma como têm sido desenvolvidas são de pouca repercussão ou mesmo não efetivas. / Abstract: According to the V National Research carried out by Centro Brasileiro de Informação sobre Drogas Psicotrópicas - CEBRID in 2004, the average age for alcoholic drinking consumption initiation was 12,7 years old. According to these data, the habit of drinking starts earlier every year among teenagers. Those facts should be treated as a public health issue. Under the effect of alcohol the teenager can be involved in situations of personal risk as well he/she can hurt other people. Taking into consideration that the habit of drinking is built socially, the knowledge on how teenagers classify this behavior, and who they consider an authority to keep the use under regular basis it is important for the creation of prevention and intervention programs. The results among the interviewed volunteers showed they didn't associate the habit of drinking abusively to moral issues. They believe this behavior is connected to personal and prudential domains, in other words, the problem is personal and even the consequences arisen from this behavior may be harmful to others they are not considered moral issues. They are true believers that this is part of the growing process and they need to face risk situations to evaluate how serious and dangerous they are. Therefore, we can conclude that advertisements, family advice, school orientation in the format they are being developed today are considered of low repercussion or even ineffective. / Doutor

As bebidas alcoólicas são um dos principais fatores de mortalidade no mundo e a droga de maior uso entre os adolescentes, trazendo consequências físicas, psíquicas, sociais e legais relacionadas ao uso de drogas, sejam elas lícitas ou ilícitas. Em vista disso, esta pesquisa teve como objetivo investigar o padrão uso de álcool e outras drogas em universitários e a formação de sua competência moral. O estudo foi realizado em duas fases e contou com a participação de 164 alunos da graduação da Unesp de Marília. A primeira fase, ou levantamento inicial, usou como instrumentos o AUDIT (The Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test), que avalia o uso de álcool e o risco de envolvimento com outras substâncias, um questionário sócio-econômico e um questionário para uso de substâncias psicoativas. A segunda fase, utilizou o MJT_xt (Moral Judgment Test- extended version), que avalia o índice de competência moral. Quanto aos resultados do AUDIT, 29,9% (49 alunos) apresentaram-se positivos para o uso problemático ou abusivo de álcool. Diversos problemas e riscos físicos, sociais e psicológicos pelos quais passam após beber, como envolvimento com acidentes, machucar-se ou ferir a outros, perder compromissos, ter amnésia, beber se embriagando, precisar beber no dia seguinte para superar o mal-estar causado pelo álcool e sentir remorso forma relatados pelos estudantes. Cerca de 78% deles bebem ou beberam alguma vez na vida, 25% bebem mensalmente ou menos, 31% bebem de 2 a 4 vezes por mês e 19,5% bebem de 2 a 3 vezes por semana. Alcoholic beverages are a major factor of mortality worldwide and the increased use of drugs among adolescents, bringing physical, mental, social and legal matters related to this use and to other drugs, whether they are legal or illegal ones. As a result, this research aimed to investigate the pattern of alcohol and other drugs in college students and the formation of their moral competence. The study was conducted in two phases and with the participations of 164 undergraduate students from Unesp, Marília. The first phase or initial survey, used as instruments, AUDIT (The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test, which evaluates alcohol use and the risk of involvement with other substances, a social and economial survey and a questionnaire for substance abuse. The second phase used the MJT_xt, which evaluates the moral competence. As the results for the AUDIT, 29.9% (49 students) were positive to problematic use or abuse of alcohol. Several problems, including physical, social and psychological problems that they go through after drinking, such as involvement in accidents, hurt themselves or injure others, miss appointments, have amnesia, getting drunk, need to drink the next day to overcome the discomfort caused by alcohol and remorse were reported by the students. About 78% of them drink or drank at least once in life, 25% drink monthly or less, 31% drink 2-4 times per month and 19.5% drink 2-3 times per week. Immigration, Literacy, and Mobility: A Critical Ethnographic Study of Well-educated Chinese Immigrants’ Trajectories in Canada

This dissertation interrogates the deficit assumptions about English proficiency of skilled immigrants who were recruited by Canadian governments between the late 1990s and early 2000s. Through the lens of literacy as social practice, the eighteen-month ethnographic qualitative research explores the sequential experiences of settlement and economic integration of seven well-educated Chinese immigrant professionals. The analytical framework is built on sociocultural approaches to literacy and learning, as well as the theories of discourses and language reproduction. Using multiple data sources (observations, conversational interviews, journal and diary entries, photographs, documents, and artifacts collected in everyday lives), I document many different ways that well-educated Chinese immigrants take advantage of their language and literacy skills in English across several social domains of home, school, job market, and workplace. Examining the trans-contextual patterning of the participants’ language and literacy activities reveals that immigrant professionals use literacy as assistance in seeking, negotiating, and taking hold of resources and opportunities within certain social settings. However, my data show that their language and literacy engagements might not always generate positive consequences for social networks, job opportunities, and upward economic mobility. Close analyses of processes and outcomes of the participants’ engagements across these discursive discourses make it very clear that the monolithic assumptions of the dominant language shape and reinforce structural barriers by constraining their social participation, decision making, and learning practice, and thereby make literacy’s consequences unpredictable. The deficit model of language proficiency serves the grounds for linguistic stereotypes and economic marginalization, which produces profoundly consequential effects on immigrants’ pathways as they strive for having access to resources and opportunities in the new society. My analyses illuminate the ways that language and literacy create the complex web of discursive spaces wherein institutional agendas and personal desires are intertwined and collide in complex ways that constitute conditions and processes of social and economic mobility of immigrant populations. Based on these analyses, I argue that immigrants’ successful integration into a host country is not about the mastery of the technical skills in the dominant language. Rather, it is largely about the recognition and acceptance of the value of their language use and literacy practice as they attempt to partake in the globalized new economy.
