The New Order in the New World: A Comparison of the Catholic Corporatist Movements in Brazil and Quebec (1931-1945)

de Lima Pontes, Clelio Ayrton January 2017 (has links)
This thesis is a comparative study of the Catholic corporatist movement in Brazil and Quebec between 1931 and 1945. It analyses how Catholic intellectuals in these countries adapted the Catholic social doctrine and Catholic corporatism to their distinct realities. The methodology pursued relies on contrasting the ideas expressed in the publications of the two main institutions to profess the Catholic corporatism in their societies, namely the Dom Vital Center (DVC) in Brazil and the École Sociale Populaire (ESP) in Quebec. This thesis begins by demonstrating that even before the publication of the encyclical Quadragesimo Anno, the ESP and of the DVC had already established a tradition of thought that relied on the influences of distinct Catholic intellectuals. Such influences are fundamental to understand how French Canadian Catholic corporatists developed a corporatist thought directed towards the development of union movements, while their Brazilian counterparts saw corporatism as a new form of state that would replace the institutions of the Old Republic. Furthermore, this thesis also aims to demonstrate how the distinct social and economic contexts of Brazil and Quebec influenced the Catholic corporatist models proposed by the ESP and the DVC. While the industrial context of Quebec led the ESP to focus on solving the issues related to the “social question”, the rural characteristics of Brazilian society led the DVC to dedicate their attention to countering the advances of political secularism. As a result, while Catholic corporatists in Brazil and Quebec followed the directives of the same papal encyclicals, they developed their corporatist ideas as solutions to distinct problems. Finally, this thesis also analyses how the ESP and the DVC adapted the Catholic criticisms of communism and liberalism to their realities and studies the roles that the Catholic right placed on corporatism in the development of their national identities.

Mara Aparecida Freitas Barbosa 03 July 2013 (has links)
This professional Masters dissertation deals with the following theme: the social doctrine in the Brazilian Methodist Church based in the Second Ecclesiastical Region. The research theme was confined within a bibliographic and historical cropping of the episcopal reports to the Councils of the Second Ecclesiastical Region, in the period of 1990 to 2011. An attempt was made to analyze these documents in the light of the Methodist theology of John Wesley, which focuses on the fact that the Gospel does not communicate itself only through words writings, sermons and studies. The word (written and spoken) must be accompanied by actions (to act). To ally word with action is the challenge before the Methodist people. Keeping the theoretical presuppositions of the social doctrine in Methodism in mind, one tried to offer some conclusions, within which we highlight: the emerging of manifestations of inconformity with the churchs accommodation and with the incoherence of the leaders with regard to the teachings of Wesley during the period of the military dictatorship (1964-1985). This movement led to the formulation of orientation documents for the church such as the Social Creed, the Quadrennial Plans and the Plan for the Life and the Mission of the Church. As of the 1990s one is able to see the gradual neglect of this essential aspect of Methodism which is the commitment to the social. The bishops position is manifested in the theoretical part of their reports as well as in the emphases on missionary actions which do not reveal the inclusion of the commitment to the social issues. In the end, but not the least, we point out the challenge of recovering the Methodist theology which allies evangelistic action with social action, besides the practical and congregational experience of the theme which orients Brazilian Methodism: Church missionary congregation at the service of the people.

Matos, Ana Paula de. January 2010 (has links)
The present study aims to contrast the Church Social Doctrine presence in assistance action, undertaken by CNBB, through the Fraternity Campaigns from the years 1986, 2002 and 2007, dealing specifically with the land‟s issue. We chose the land‟s theme because we observed that the private property issue is the beginning and the end of the doctrine question, whose design shape today's society such as that expressed need for the creation of the divine plan on Earth, through actions would lead to building a society that, would take the concern for the comfort. The documents that underlie our research are beyond the basic texts and documentation relating to Campaigns, the papal encyclicals and diverse bibliography that conveys the main Catholic Social Doctrine points, and authors who, somehow, have discussed issues raised by the doctrine / Mestre

Very little of the catholic social discourse has been studied at the academic level, but the deep influence of the Catholic Church on western culture and its institutions is undeniable. The basis of this research is the hypothesis that the principles of catholic social teaching, when part of a social initiative, offer important input at a personal and community level, with regards to the development of the individuals they impact. This thesis also includes wide-ranging bibliographical research in order to attempt to describe and understand the philosophical and social bases of these principles. A case study is presented involving the Landless Workers Association of São Paulo, a popular housing movement that operates in the northwestern region of the city of São Paulo, which has aided 20,000 families who did not own their own homes and who previously lived in precarious conditions. This research takes a qualitative approach, with on-the-ground analyses of the dynamics of this association undertaken during visits to the areas where it operates, as well as analysis of the responses to semi-structured interviews with the founders and members of the movement about their own life stories and those of the movement itself. Questionnaires were also applied to other members in order to corroborate the elements that emerged from the interviews. It can be observed that the principle of the dignity of the human person, solidarity and subsidiarity are present in the bases of this movement, reflected in the concern the founders have for their members, taking into account all the aspects that constitute individual people and, consequently, their families, from the freedom to build their own homes in the way they desire, to the strengthening of communitarian aspects and the establishment of partnerships with local authorities and with other groups in society.
