Evaluating network generation algorithms for decentralized social media platforms

Obreykov, Nicky January 2021 (has links)
With the large amount of personal data being shared on social media platforms, there is an increased security risk involved. Individuals are reliant on companies keeping their promises of securely handling personal data. Despite this, previous incidents such as the Cambridge Analytica incident have unveiled issues with the model of trusting a single entity to handle personal data safely. Instead of relying on a single entity keeping their promise, a different type of social media platform has started to emerge that decentralizes control over data. This type of social media platform that removes trust in a central entity, is called a decentralized social media platform. There are a plethora of decentralized social media platforms each relying on different heuristics for creating the network. Depending on the network structure which is the backbone of the platform, each network can have a different degree of centrality. If a decentralized social media platform’s network becomes too centralized, some entities in the network can gain larger control of the network, defeating its intended purpose. To prevent this, studying the network that comprises the platform can be fruitful. The science of network analysis can aid in finding the optimal network structure that best fits a decentralized social media platform. This study has examined five different network generation algorithms with a number of permutations in search of the network generation algorithm that best fits a decentralized social media platform. Each algorithm has generated 1,000 networks which were then used in one-way ANOVA tests to observe differences between the measurements. Four network centralization measures and a network efficiency measure have been used to determine the algorithm that minimizes centralization, while still being functional. The results indicate that, out of the five algorithms, the k-degree algorithm best fits a decentralized social media platform.

Instagram's contribution to learning : A qualitative study of how young adults describes the impact of social media on learning in relation to health.

Iveljic, Kristina, Novalic, Selma, Tiro, Nives January 2020 (has links)
The use of social media, Instagram in particular has recently increased in young adults lives. Instagram is considered a social platform, where individuals both create social relationships and integrate with each other, but also a platform that contributes to knowledge development and learning. The purpose of the study was to describe young adults' learning in relation to the area of health on the social media platform Instagram. This is a qualitative study where individual interviews were used as a data collection method. Qualitative content analysis forms the basis of the study's analysis process with regard to an abductive approach. The sample consisted of 12 interviewees aged between 20 to 30 years. The results show that the participants feel that they have an increased knowledge of health. Instagram also contributes to change health practices. It is a platform where individuals learn from two different informal perspectives. On one hand it is through the individual observation of information, independently, and on the other way it is through informal learning by community and interaction. Finally, can Instagram be a great source of inspiration and motivation for the individual to aspire to develop their living habits and health practices.

Factors Influencing the Adoption and Continuance Usage of Social MediaPlatforms among Small new ventures in Sweden

Nyakundi, Victor, Khanh, Bui Thi Kim January 2021 (has links)
The rise of social media platforms in the modern world of business has shaped how organizations undertaketheir day-to-day business activities. This has in return increasingly attracted several studies on howbusinesses can optimally harness the benefits of social media platforms through adoption and continuedusage of these platforms. This paper therefore endeavored to conduct a quantitative study on factors ofunified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) by extending the original model by Venkateshet al.,. (2003) in integrating continuance to test their impact on adoption and continuance. These factorsinclude (performance expectancy, perceived trust, perceived risk, facilitating condition, effort expectancyand perceived enjoyment) which were tested against adoption and continuance usage of social mediaplatforms among small new ventures in Sweden, an area we consider new and fragmented in focus basedon existing literatures. Through a systematic investigation, empirical data testing from small new ventures in Sweden, findingspositively identified perceived trust and facilitating conditions to have a positive influence on adoption ofsocial media platforms while effort expectancy and perceived enjoyment were found to have a positiveimpact on continuance usage of social media platforms. However, we did not find significant moderatingeffect of perceived risk and performance expectancy on adoption and continuance usage. The findings of this research present a practical and pragmatic approach that small new ventures, founders, leaders and managers of these businesses in Sweden can apply to maximize on the benefits associated withadoption and continuance usage of social media platforms.

Parallel Narrative: Short-Video Social Media Platforms’ Influences on Contemporary Narrative

Zhang, Ruiqi 01 January 2019 (has links)
Through the study of Kwai, a popular short-video social media platform in China, this thesis investigates the social issues, media class divides and aesthetics specific to Kwai culture. It further proposes a strategy of artistic practice - parallel narrative - an experiment in video art production and editing techniques that explores new possibilities of narrative in video art. Integrating theoretical research on Post-Internet art and object-oriented ontology, this thesis reveals people’s ability to digest multisource information and shows how mobile technologies and open-source materials contribute to the formation of parallel narratives.

What we want to see? The Instagram photo in business

Zhu, YuFei, Asmelash, Amanuel, Lilieholm, Jonas January 2018 (has links)
The authors of this study want to build a classification model which can help researchers and marketers to evaluate what kind of characteristics that photo online especially on Instagram can attract more attention. The process of this case of study can be divided into two steps. First of all, the authors of this paper will create a classification model of the characteristics of these pictures on Instagram based on several theories and previous studies. Then the authors of this paper will conduct nineteen semi-structured interviews with participants to reinforce the classification of categories color, visual composition, image type and emotional expression, and further develop this model to make it more comprehensive.

Integration of social media records into enterprise content management at the South African Broadcasting corporation in the Limpopo Provincial office in South Africa

Masekoameng, Moshohli Frans 03 1900 (has links)
The integration of social media records into enterprise content management systems is crucial to organisations as it enables them to have access to these records if they are required for evidential purposes. However, despite social media content being considered as official records in state-owned enterprises, they are often left unmanaged. The purpose of this study was to investigate the integration of social media content into the enterprise content management system at the South African Broadcast Corporation Limpopo provincial office in South Africa. The study utilised quantitative data collected through questionnaires distributed to SABC employees and employees at three radio stations in the Limpopo provincial office (Munghanalonene FM, Thobela FM and Phalaphala FM). The key results suggest that there were no policies or guidelines on the management of digital records that emanated from social media. It was discovered that the SABC’s Limpopo provincial office opened official accounts with various social media platforms such as SNSs, online content communities and podcasts to use for official matters; yet content generated through these platforms is neither managed nor preserved. It has been established that the responsibility of managing social media content is unconsciously assigned to the creators of the content as no official records management responsibilities were assigned. It is recommended that digital records emanating from the use of social media by the staff of the SABC Limpopo provincial office need to be treated and managed as official records, like all other paper-based records. In this regard, a policy for integration of social media content into enterprise content management is desirable. A further study on the development of a framework to integrate social media content into organisational records management is recommended. social media content, social media platform, enterprise content management, digital records, records, records management, online content communities, South African Broadcasting Authority. / Information Science / M.A.(Information Science)
