Opleidingsstrategiee vir praktykopleiers van voorgraadse maatskaplike werkstudenteKilian, Ilana 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (M Social Work)--Stellenbosch University, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This research investigates education strategies for field instructors working with
undergraduate social work students.
Social work students at the University of Stellenbosch receive practical
experience and education at welfare institutions as part of their formal education.
During this practice education period students are guided and educated by field
instructors.
Practice education of undergraduate social work students is a demanding
responsibility to field instructors and knowledge and skills are required to
complete the task successfully. During the practice education period, field
instructors are still confronted with their own work pressure and environmental
demands in practice, along with the practice education of undergraduate social
work students.
The basic premise for this research is focused on the importance of the role of
field instructors during the field practice period, as well as the importance of
continuous education to these field instructors.
This research report includes 'n thorough literature study that refers to the
knowledge and skills that are required of field instructors for practice eduaction
of students. The partnership between the educational institution and practice
education agency are discussed and the roles, tasks and expectations of the
partners are described in the chapters. Both parties are responsible for the
education of field instructors and several educational strategies are examined.
As a conclusion, educational strategies for field instructors are discussed and
recommendations are made.
The empirical research involved the use of both qualitative and quantitative
methods to explore the theoretical part of the research. An explorary study was
used to obtain the information from respondants. The findings and results of the research are analized and compared with the literature and some
recommendations are made.
The findings of this research can be used as guidelines for the education of field
instructors concerned with the education of undergraduate social work students.
Field instructors contribute to the education of professional social workers and all
parties involved in the education process should bare a responsibilty to
participate in field instructors' education.
aanbevelings is gemaak.

Thesis (MSocialWork)--Stellenbosch University, 2002. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Through the establishment of victim support centres, NICRO Eastern Cape
aims to develop community networks that render available and appropriate
support services to victims of crime. Social workers empower volunteers to
run the centres. In order for the social workers to empower volunteers, they
need to clearly understand their role in the empowerment process.
The goal of the study is to clarify the role of social workers when
empowering volunteers at community victim support centres. The profile,
motivation and current empowerment of volunteers at NICRO Eastern Cape
were determined and described by means of questionnaires. The
respondents were fifteen volunteers and three social workers.
Conclusions and recommendations were made which focused, among other
aspects, on the training of social workers and strategic planning around
empowerment. The framework of this research report can be utilized by
social workers in the empowering of volunteers, which could possibly lead
to victim support centres that are managed by volunteers, as representatives
of communities, independently from NICRO.
gemeenskapslagofferondersteuningsentrum. Die profiel, motivering en
huidige bemagtiging van vrywilligers by NICRO Oos-Kaap is deur middel

The development of a therapist through participation in a reflecting teamHanford, Ann Dowie 30 November 2004 (has links)
This thesis is a study of the development of a group of students during the time they spentworking as a reflecting team in family therapy. Due to an increase in the number of students enrolled for the Masters degree in Educational Psychology in the years from 2001, there was concern about the students experience of family therapy, since they would not all be likely to counsel a family. The study, which was undertaken over a period of two years, allows a comparison of two different experiences of being part of a reflecting team. The first year the whole group formed a single team, whereas, the group in the second year split into two teams, working on a fortnightly basis. The growth of the students as therapists was assessed by means of questionnaires and an interview with the trainer in terms of self-reflection, willingness to risk. / Social work / MA(SS)(Mental Health)

Ubuntu in action : towards the empowerment of state-appointed social workers in the Limpopo ProvinceMarch, Charmaigne Caroline January 2010 (has links)
Poverty, violence, unemployment, the high rate of HIV/Aids and a lack of resources are some of the issues the South African government is currently trying to address. Victims of crime and violence have special needs that require early intervention. Studies show that if left unattended, victims may show maladjustment in their social, marital and work environments; receiving assistance and support following victimisation therefore holds many benefits for the victim. The Victim Empowerment Programme (VEP) announced by government as part of the National Crime Prevention Strategy is meant to address these needs. The VEP is a comprehensive, multifaceted, intersectoral model that brings together integrated service delivery for victims of crime and violence. One of the mandates of the Department of Social Development as the lead department of the VEP is to provide services that empower and meet the needs of communities and individuals who are considered victims.
This study seeks to justify why it is beneficial to use a participatory learning approach when designing and conducting „in-service‟ continuing professional development training courses for state-appointed social workers working within the field of victim empowerment (VE) in South Africa. It also advocates for the theoretical approaches of experiential problem-based learning and psychosocial empowerment, and discusses the use of a crossover of theories from the different disciplines of mainstream psychology, community psychology and social work.
The vision of a new South Africa based on post-1994 ANC government policies is outlined and the history of the field of socio-economic development and community development is discussed. Mainstream psychology‟s contribution to community development, and the tenets of community psychology, participation and empowerment, are applied in the design of an „in-service‟ short course.
The primary focus of the study is on the range of skills and abilities needed to initiate and maintain successful VE services. These include the following: skills in group process facilitation; skills in intersectoral collaboration (referral and networking) with other governmental departments and other healthcare professionals; knowing how to establish and maintain forums; an understanding of the principles and tools of participatory learning and action; skills required for designing, organising and
presenting workshops; project management, and the monitoring and evaluation of VE projects.
This study elucidates how critical the „in-service‟ training of VE social workers is within the new social development paradigm in South Africa, and offers key considerations and recommendations regarding future „in-service‟ training programmes/short courses for state-employed social workers involved in VE services. / Psychology / D. Aanwending van werknemerhulpprogramme deur welsynsinstansiesBrink, Adéle 30 November 2002 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / The purpose of this research study is to determine the extent to which
employee assistance programmes can be utilised by welfare agencies to ensure
that work-related and personal problems do not negatively influence the
productivity of social workers. The group of respondents consisted of ten social
work supervisors from ten different welfare agencies, which included civil sevice
organisations, specialist organisations and family welfare organisations. The
conclusion that was reached based on the findings of the empirical study is
that social workers have a need for services that will prevent, relieve or
eliminate their work-related and personal problems, in order to improve the
productivity and general functioning of social workers. It is recommended that
welfare agencies in accordence with their unique nature and functioning and
the specific needs of the social workers, utilise employee assistance
Social Work / M.Diac. (Social Work)

Examining the fit between personal, learning and practical work contexts of students to further practice excellence in social work trainingLawlor, Gwynneth Mary 30 June 2008 (has links)
South Africa is currently facing a severe shortage of trained and competent social
workers. Case loads have reached proportions of such magnitude that social workers in
the field are battling to meet the needs of the people they serve, while still maintaining
high ethical and professional standards. The impact of HIV/AIDS on the field of social
work has currently redirected a major part of the focus of the profession on meeting the
needs of child-headed households, to find and train foster parents for these children and
generally to assist the poorest of the poor to access various grants applicable to their
circumstances.
This redirection appears also to have changed the emphasis regarding social work
training requirements. Whereas in the past the newly qualified social worker was able to
acquire additional skills in the workplace, under the guidance of experienced social
workers, today it would seem that the demands of the work place are such that the social
worker needs to take on significant responsibilities on entering the field. At the same
time the Department of Social Services in South Africa is encouraging universities to
increase the intake of social work students, in an attempt to meet this rising need for
personnel trained to meet the current requirements of the clients of social work services.
This exploratory research will focus on the applicability of UNISA (University of South
Africa) social work training to these current requirements of social work by tapping into
three different frames of reference:
1) The experiences and perceptions of the final year social work student in their
placement setting, and particularly on whether they have felt their UNISA training
equipped them for the work they are required to do.
2) The way the UNISA student is perceived by the practice setting personnel
(contact person), and whether they meet the requirements of the field setting.
3) Input from the UNISA appointed supervisors responsible for the final year social
work students' professional development in the field. The person-centred approach and the developmental approach have been briefly
discussed in relation to social work in South Africa in the literature review and form the
backdrop to this research, guiding the researcher in the exploration of the perceptions of
the three different types of respondents. Post-modern theory is also at the root of the
researcher's attempt to find fit between the different perceptions and the implications for
social work training at a distance learning institute in South Africa today. / Social Work / M. A. (Mental Health)

Benutting van onderrigtegnieke in maatskaplikewerksupervisie aan voorgraadse studenteFell, Granda Desiré Jacqueline 31 March 2006 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / OPSOMMING
`n Gestruktureerde vraelys is as data-insamelingsmetode benut.
SUMMARY
An exploratory and descriptive study was undertaken to provide scientifically based guidelines regarding educational techniques used by practical trainers when providing social work supervision to undergraduate students. To apply supervision effectively, practical trainers must have knowledge of educational techniques and be able to apply these.
The literature study focuses on the educational function of supervision and provides a classification and description of educational techniques that can be applied within the supervision process.
The sample included twenty-two supervisors/practical trainers at family welfare organisations in the Metropolitan and Boland regions, Western Cape. A structured questionnaire was used to gather data. The findings and results show that continuing education through informal training strategies by practical trainers is essential to expand their knowledge of the educational function of supervision and to encourage the use of educational techniques. Further research should focus on educational techniques from the Gestalt approach or other approaches. / Social work / M.Diac.
