socio-psychological Dimensions Of Participatory Processes: In The Case Of The Local Government And Ngo Cooperation In Participatory Democracy Project

Kulozu, Neslihan 01 June 2012 (has links) (PDF)
The transformation of the planning paradigm from rational comprehensive planning to participatory planning is commonly explained by the shift from instrumental rationality to communicative rationality. Based on communicative rationality, participatory planning approach has its own assumptions. One of the assumptions and pre-conditions of the realization of participatory planning practices is consensus-building. However, because of context-dependency of participatory planning processes, building consensus at the same level within every unique context is not possible. Therefore, comparing the participatory processes in terms of their success, which is commonly evaluated with standard success criteria in the literature, cannot be proper to participatory planning approach. Moreover, for the present study, exploring the factors affecting the participatory processes with a critical approach to increase the realization chance of participatory practices is more important than evaluating their successes. Focusing on the factors, affecting the participatory planning processes at interactional and socio-cultural levels, the thesis study aims to explore the socio-psychological dimensions of participatory processes that hinder and/or enhance them. To do that, the study poses three main research questions: &lsquo / what are the socio-psychological dimensions of the participatory processes of Gazi, Kaymakli, Odunpazari and Seyrek?&rsquo / , &lsquo / how much do socio-psychological dimensions explain the success of participatory processes?&rsquo / and &lsquo / how do socio-psychological dimensions explain contextually different participatory processes?&rsquo / To respond to these questions, the study was designed as case study and intended to pursue exploratory and quasi-experimental research approaches. As a result of the study, the research questions were answered in the case of the &lsquo / Local Government and NGO Cooperation in Participatory Democracy&rsquo / project in the Turkish context.

The role of dress in women's transition from Iranians to Iranian-Americans: a socio-psychological analysis

Ghayournejadian, Fatemeh January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Apparel, Textiles, and Interior Design / Kim Hiller Connell / Acculturation can be a difficult process for many immigrants, and because there is a large number of Iranian immigrants living in the United States (over one million), the focus of this study is to understand how women cope with moving from a country with conservative standards to a more liberal country and the role dress plays in their acculturation process. Specifically, the purpose of this study is to: 1) explore Iranian dress standards and the effect these standards have on Iranian-American women’s lives; 2) gain understanding of the role of dress in women’s transition from Iranians to Iranian-Americans; 3) apply Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs motivational model to the women's acculturation process; and 4) compare two distinct generations of women—women born before the 1979 Islamic Revolution and women born after the Revolution. This study utilized a qualitative approach and collected data through semi-structured interviews with 11 women. The women did not express any traumatic psychological effects caused by the conservative dress standards in Iran. The main impact of the dress standards was the physical discomfort caused by wearing the hijab in hot weather. Dress played a significant role in the women's transitions process. More freedom in dress in the United States has allowed the women to express themselves much more than when they lived in Iran, leading to higher self-esteem and confidence levels. The women expressed a desire to sustain their Iranian heritage, and both generations shared similar perceptions of American dress standards prior to immigrating to the United States. Differences included higher consumption levels by the younger generation and their higher knowledge about the fashion industry and trends. The findings can be useful for Iranian women as they transition to an Iranian-American lifestyle. Additionally, it can also be beneficial to women from other countries who share similar experiences. Furthermore, the results may assist in aiding different organizations which help Iranian women integrate into the U.S. culture. Finally, retailers with target markets similar to the women of this study can use the findings to better understand the habits, needs, motives, and overall consumer behaviors of their clientele.

A comparison of lay and professional opinion on treatment need and treatment outcome

Vally, Ismail M. January 1997 (has links)
Magister Chirurgiae Dentium (MChD) / The psychological, social, and cultural aspects of facial and dental attractiveness is an integral part of health care. Lay persons perceptions of facial and dental attractiveness are influenced by many factors including age, gender, geographic location (nationally or international), ethnic status, employment status, cultural differences and social class will effect the social impact of the anomalies. In addition, the public response to dental anomalies will vary according to experience of good health or ill health of the individual, relatives and friends. The perception of malocclusion is often seen differently between orthodontists, patients and lay public. The differing perceptions of patients and dental practitioners may influence the delivery of orthodontic care. It has been reported that 70% of orthodontic treatment is dentist induced and that orthodontic treatment may be undertaken without the patient or parents perceiving a problem with the teeth. (DHSS, Schanscheiff Report, 1986). The thresholds of entry and exit for orthodontic care may be different as perceived by orthodontists and lay persons. Orthodontists may pursue full alignment and perfect occlusion whereas lay persons may accept varying degrees of deviation from normal. This current study has assessed and recorded the differences in opinions of professional orthodontists and lay persons on dento-facial aesthetics, orthodontic treatment need and orthodontic treatment outcome. The study was carried out at the Orthodontic Department, University of Wales, College of Medicine, School of Dentistry. The opinions of 56 lay persons (dental technicians, dental nurses and lay persons not involved in the clinical process) and 97 orthodontists was collected by recording judgements using various patient records as stimuli. For each set of records examined, each member of the panel indicated their opinion using Likert scales. Judgements were made by assessments of 68 study casts in respect of:- * the need for orthodontic treatment on dental health grounds. the need for orthodontic treatment on dental aesthetic grounds. deviation from normal occlusion. the decision whether to treat. ** * In addition, judgements were made on a sample of 50 pairs of outline facial profiles before and after treatment in respect of: * * deviation from normal facial aesthetics comparison of aesthetics pre-treatment and post-treatment. Furthermore, assessments on 50 pairs of pre-treatment and post-treatment study casts in respect of: * * degree of improvement as a result of treatment. acceptability of result. Orthodontists subjective judgements are more reliable than lay persons in their assessments of dental aesthetics, dental health and deviation from normal. The level of agreement for the decision to recommend treatment is similar between orthodontists and lay groups ie. lay persons are as reliable as orthodontists in the decision to recommend treatment. Orthodontists tend to recommend 10 - 12 % more treatment than lay persons. The orthodontist group were more reliable than the lay group in assessing degree of improvement and assessment of outcome. Orthodontists reject approximately 25% of cases deemed acceptable by the lay group. Dental aesthetics appeared to be the most important feature in the assessment of treatment outcome by both orthodontists and lay groups.

Сумарокова, Ю. И., Sumarokova, Y. I. January 2018 (has links)
In connection with the rapid development of information technology and the emergence of various devices and devices that transmit this information, the question of psychological security that surrounds us and our children, information space. Since cartoons, one of the most preferred children's genres, we investigated the cartoon content most viewed by children of primary school age, as well as conducted a socio-psychological examination of the most popular cartoon among children 7-10 years. The theoretical part of the work covers such issues as the impact of the media on the personality of the child, the child's perception of what is happening on the screen, describes the features of the perception and influence of modern cartoons on the child's personality in modern domestic and foreign psychology. The empirical part reflects the results of the study. The survey showed that watching cartoons is not always controlled by adults, the most preferred cartoons do not correspond to age. Experts have identified cartoons as aggressive, not performing educational functions, not aesthetic. Revealed differences between experts parents and psychologists by age criterion. The results of the work can be applied in work with parents, psychologists, teachers and kindergarten teachers.

Сравнительное исследование социально-психологической адаптации и копинг-стратегий у студентов 1-го и 3-го курсов : магистерская диссертация / Comparative study of socio-psychological adaptation and coping strategies in students of the 1st and 3rd courses

Шабанова, Н. А., Shabanova, N. A. January 2021 (has links)
The object of the research was the socio-psychological adaptation and coping strategies of students. The subject of the research was the socio-psychological adaptation and coping strategies of students with different academic performance. The master's thesis consists of an introduction, three chapters, a conclusion, a list of references (69 sources) and an appendix that includes the forms of the applied methods. The volume of the master's thesis is 117 pages. At present, the problem of adaptation in the process of professional training of qualified specialists occupies one of the most significant positions in a number of psychological studies. Preparation for professional activity and the formation of social and professional qualities of communication are carried out within the walls of the university, therefore, it is important to adapt the personality to the system of intra-university relations and to educational and professional activities. The process of adaptation of students to educational and professional activities is an important element in the vocational training system, the result of their activities depends on it (performance is understood as academic performance). In the educational and professional activities of students, adaptability determines the ability of students to navigate the content, forms and methods of teaching used in the university. One of the most important structures in the formation of functional adaptive or maladaptive behavior is the chosen coping strategy. In the conditions of study at the university, it can be most fully evaluated during the examination session, when the student's stress and anxiety increases. The session was viewed as a stress factor that confronts the student with the need to solve certain problems, to cope with himself and the situation. Adaptive coping strategies used by students can be predictors of successful adaptation and, given that the implementation of the basic coping strategy for solving problems is impossible without a sufficient level of thinking, it was assumed that the coping strategy is related to the student's academic performance. Thus, the purpose of the work was to study the socio-psychological adaptation and coping strategies of behavior of 1st and 3rd year students with different academic performance.
