opgelei te word om effektief met alle betrokkenes in 'n konfliksituasie te kommunikeer. / This paper endeavours to give a review of the problematic nature of communication skills against the background of multicultural school situations in South Africa.
General intra and interpersonal communication skills are highlighted.
Further to the literature review, qualitative data has been gathered through interviews with a number of principals and teachers who are involved in multicultural school situations.
The manner in which people speak to each other is important. Communication problems can occur when culture groups communicate. The management of misunderstandings and conflict is important in multicultural school situations. Education managers must utilise several communication skills during a conflict situation. The successful functioning of a school is essentially co-determined by the employment of
effective communication skills to improve relationships between different groups.

The Cape Town Orchestra has exerted a major influence on the development of
orchestral music and musical culture not only in Cape Town but throughout South Africa.
It was the first professional orchestra in South Africa and came into existence on 28
February 1914.
The Orchestra's history has been divided into two main periods. During the first period,
from 1914 to 1968, the Orchestra was known as the Cape Town Municipal Orchestra.
During the second period, from 1969 until its final performance in 1997, the Orchestra
was known as the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra.
The Orchestra received financial support from the Cape Town Municipality throughout
its existence. After receiving its final municipal grant in 1996 the Orchestra could not
survive without financial assistance, and merged with the Capab Orchestra to become
the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra gave.

The Berlin Mission Church in Cape Town 1899-1923Karzek, Thomas 11 1900 (has links)
The study describes the formation and the establishment
of the first urban congregation of the Berlin Mission in
the Cape at the turn of the century. The establishment of
the Cape Town Congregation was not a result of urban
mission work but rather a result of the townward movement
of rural coloured people who already belonged to the
Berlin Mission Church. At first the mission headquarters
in Berlin resisted an involvement in Cape Town, but the
members there and the missionaries of the Cape Synod
urged the Berl in Mission to accept the responsibility.
Fol lowing the advice of the Moravian Mission the
Berliners finally sent a missionary, and declared the
congregation as a proper mission station on May 7, 1907.
The study closes with the consecration of the church
building in Searle Street in 1923 as a visible sign for
the establishment of the Berlin Mission Church in Cape

Throughout the history of universities, university autonomy
and academic freedom have come ~o be regardeci as indispensable
if the university has to fulfill its function of generating
and disseminating knowledge and information for the benefit of
society. Al though these are often conflated, they are
distinguishable though interdependent. Autonomy relates to
the self-governance of the university without external
interference. Academic freedom entails the freedom of an
individual academic to hold whatever views, orthodox or
unorthodox, without censure or other penalty.

Although academic autonomy and freedom are critical to the
academic function, they are not beyond dispute. There is
always a continuous debate on what are the proper boundaries
of legitimate academic autonomy and freedom. These boundaries
are not fixed and keep on shifting. The shifting is often
caused by government intervention into university education by
way of subsidising it.
As a quid pro quo for subsidizing university education, the
government often feels entitled to stipulate conditions for
the granting of such subsidies. Various governments follow
different ways of doing this. There is a general trend in
terms of which the government is defining the degree of
academic autonomy. With autonomy it emphasizes accountability
and with academic freedom it emphasizes responsibility. These
are not mutually in conflict.

Al though universities cherish their autonomy and academic
freedom, these are always subject to threat. These cannot
flourish in an authoritarian culture, but can only thrive in a
democratic culture where other civil liberties are respected.
The reason for this is that human freedom is indivisible and
academic freedom cannot survive when other rights ar-e
violated.
The South African Constitution protects academic freedom.
This is not generally done in most constitutions of the world.
The reason why the South African Cons ti tut ion expressly
protects academic freedom is because academic autonomy and
freedom were severely violated in the past. Al though the
protection of academic freedom in the Constitution does not
provide indefeasible security, it makes the way of a
transgressing government difficult. This is important because

The 1978 Methodist Schism in Transkei : a missiological analysisLungu, Maxwell Themba. 11 1900 (has links)
In 1977 the Annual Conference of the Methodist Church of South Africa (MCSA) decided to
discontinue its practice of sending messages of goodwill to the Heads of State of the Southern
African region (including Transkei). The Prime Minister ofTranskei interpreted this resolution
as implying the non-recognition ofTranskeian political independence, obtained from the Republic
of South Africa in 1976, and expressed his intention to ban the MCSA in Transkei and replace it
by the Methodist Church of Transkei (MCT)
The thesis presents, in narrative form (Chapter 2), a detailed description of the process of
the schism ( 12 January 1978 to 2 June 1978). Chapter 3 analyses the political and ecclesial
context of the schism comprehensively by examining three main issues: the Methodist tradition
in the Eastern Cape and Transkei, the Methodist tradition of pledging loyalty to the Head of State
and the emergence of Transkei as a geo-political state.
Chapter 4 focuses on the reaction of the Transkeian Methodists to the dispute between
the Transkeian Government and the MCSA. The loyalties which influenced their reaction are
identified and analysed. In this study the whole process of the schism is seen as an interplay
between and clash of different loyalties.
Chapter 5 reviews the different models and typologies used to explain and interpret the
African Independent/Initiated Church movement. The aim is to identify the elements in these
models which are relevant for an understanding of this schism.
Chapter 6 concludes the study by considering five areas of missiological importance
highlighted by the 1978 Methodist schism in Transkei, namely: ( 1) the research questions, (2)
mission and unity, (3) mission and ethnic issues, (4) prophetic mission, and (5) prophetic

age principles.
Present-day education is typified by technocratic age imperatives which include meritocracy,
specialization, vocationalism, professionalism and scientism. Technocratic age education is
further characterized by mass education, free and compulsory education and greater bureaucratic
control of education. In technocratic age education systems, entrance examinations are used to
select learners for advanced education and training. It would appear that this takes place with

An exploration of Groome's shared praxis approach as contextual Christian education within a South African Baptist township churchSutcliffe-Pratt, Daniel John 02 1900 (has links)
The study commenced by identifying existing forms of Christian education using top-down education within South African Baptist Convention churches. The research established that current models of education were unsatisfactory, as they were individualist, spiritualised and lacking contextual insight A need for Christian education showing greater sensitivity to context was highlighted. A descriptive study ensued implementing Osmers'descriptive-empirical tasks within the field of Practical Theology. Informed by literature relating to liberation theology, critical pedagogy and South African contextual theology, Groome's Shared Praxis Approach (SPA) to education was selected for exploration as a type of contextual Christian education.The research had two objectives.Firstly it explored the five educational movements of SPA, as they were outworked in the township church. Secondly, it sought to establish whether SPA could potentially serve as a type of contextual Christian education within the South African context. SPA was therefore outworked within a Baptist Convention church in the township of Munsieville. Following a qualitative approach, the research observed two Bible Studies implementing SPA and undertook six semi-structured interviews.These were recorded and analysed. Conceptualisation of the data involved content analysis from which codes and categories emerged, as well as drawing on the literature as a lens to analyse and interpret that data. Inter-linked characteristics of contextual Christian education emerged from the data. These related to:contextual stories told by participants; cultural understandings of the Christian Story, and; critical reflection concerning praxis. The findings highlighted that SPA encouraged participants to engage in a participatory, praxis approach to education. Participants read the Christian Story dialogically; in community 'with' each other, as well as in relation to their context. Accordingly, the Christian education process emerged from the bottom-up, enabling participants and facilitator to co-create knowledge. The consequences of this education process indicated liberativc characteristics. The implications ofthese findings were explored. A history of the National Union of South African Students (NUSAS), 1956-1970McKay, Clare Elizabeth Anne 08 1900 (has links)
The aim of the National Union of South African Students (NUSAS) was to represent the interests of all South African students nationally and internationally. The challenge then to the liberal NUSAS leadership was how to meet the demands of black students for a politically relevant policy while simultaneously retaining the loyalty of its white middle class and often conservative membership. In 1957, the black University College of Fort Hare returned to NUSAS to participate in the national union’s campaign against the imposition of apartheid on the universities. Consequently, NUSAS adopted the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights as the foundation of its policy. Sharpeville and the increasing number of black students associated with NUSAS contributed to the further politicisation and leftward movement of the national union.
The emergence of two new exclusively African student organisations together with the decision of a student seminar in Dar es Salaam that NUSAS be barred from all international student forums as its demographics precluded it from representing the aspirations of the black majority was the pretext for a far-reaching interrogation of NUSAS’s structure and functioning. Henceforward NUSAS would play a ‘radical role’ in society. This played into the hands of the government and its proxies, the new conservative students associations which sought to slice away NUSAS’s moderate to conservative white membership. The arrest of current and former NUSAS officers implicated in sabotage provided more grist to the right wing mill. In an attempt to manage this most serious crisis, as well as to continue functioning in the increasingly authoritarian and almost wholly segregated milieu of the mid-1960s, NUSAS abandoned its ‘radical role’ and increasingly focussed on university and educational matters.
Nonetheless, the state intensified its campaign to weaken NUSAS. By means of legislation, the utilisation of conservative student structures and the intimidation of university authorities, the government attempted to ensure that segregation was applied at all NUSAS-affiliated universities. It was the application of segregation by cowed university authorities that precipitated the New Left-inspired student protests at NUSAS-affiliated campuses in the late 1960s as well as the establishment of the separate black South African Students Organisation, the latter leading to the exodus of all black students from NUSAS. / History / D. [Preface - Nico Jooste]: For more than ten years, we have been involved in implementing internationalisation of South African Higher Education. The we I am referring too, are those who are both visionaries and passionately dedicated to the process of internationalisation. A small group of South African Higher Education administrators, academics and senior managers involved themselves in the process of internationalisation of their institutions, and collectively the South African system. This process of internationalisation started as an uncoordinated response to the demands of a South African higher education system that was determined to break with the past, and re-connect with global higher education, it was left to a few dedicated visionaries to create the support structure that would not only assist the higher education institutions, but also the system. The other bodies that were supposed to pay attention to this very important aspect of Higher Education in the 21st century were too busy with other, equally important, matters. It became clear that the priorities of organisations like SAUVCA were not internationalisation, and IEASA was established as the vehicle to promote it. This story of IEASA needed to be told. This book is not aimed at IEASA members only, but also at the broader higher education public. This is the story of an organisation that touched all parts of South African Higher Education society as well as the broader society. It is partly the ‘corporate memory’ of Internationalisation, as well as a reflection on achievements. Ten years looked like a short period to reflect on an organisations history, I am however of the opinion that in a society that is changing so rapidly, we need to reflect more frequently on the past so that we can plan a better future. For any historian operating in the modem era of electronic communication, access to sources of information has become a major challenge. IEASA, Thilor Manikam in particular, needs to be commended for the accurate record keeping of events over the past ten years. Kirstin Nussgruber very diligently captured the efforts of the forces driving the establishment of IEASA for the first two years. This book was mainly based on evidence gathered from minutes, reports and letters that are in the possession of the IEASA Office. I also had the privilege, and advantage, to be a member of the Executive Committee for the past five years. This book cannot be the last word on IEASA, as it is only the view of a member. The bias is thus toward IEASA and focusses mainly on its achievements. Chapter 3 focusses mainly on the achievements of a voluntary organisation. The efforts over the ten years of three persons namely. Roshen Kishun as President, Derek Swemmer as Treasurer, and Thilor Manikam as the Administrator stood out, and was the stabilising factor during the foundation years. The role of Roshen Kishun in the publication of Study South African cannot be underestimated. Without his vision, drive and effort, this publication would not be preparing for the launch of the seventh edition. It is a unique source of information about South African Higher Education. Very few other systems, if any. produce such a publication. Although the author was requested by the IEASA Executive Committee to write this book, the views expressed in this publication is not the views of the Executive Committee, but that of the author.

“Watch-dogs for an Economy” : a determination of the origins of the South African Public Accountants' and Auditors' Board – as the Regulator of the Profession – principally through an analysis of the debates and related reports to the House of Assembly of the Parliament of the Union of South Africa in the period 1913–1940Lancaster, Jonathan Charles Swinburne January 2014 (has links)
This thesis concentrates upon a new field of research in South African accounting scholarship – this being, in general terms, accounting history and more specifically an analysis of the origins of the Public Accountants’ and Auditors’ Board as watch-dog in relation to: ● the South African economy in the period 1913–1940; and ● the changing political framework (also in the period 1913–1940). The integration of economy, politics and personal ambition on the part of early 20th Century accounting societies, led to a variety of responses, counter proposals, stalemates and unfocused activity which caused the process of accountants’ registration to extend over 38 years in South Africa. This confusion was in strong contrast to the process of speedy registration of accountants in New Zealand and Australia. The final unification of South African accounting societies in 1951 created the Public Accountants’ and Auditors’ Board. Its creation, at long last, suggested an overarching control and regulation which was mirrored in the final political unification and economic stability of a South Africa dominated by Afrikaner Nationalists. One further element was interwoven into the fabric of the thesis – this being the application of institutional economic theory and its impact upon the accounting concepts of “material irregularity” and “reportable irregularity”.
