Xenophobia conflict in De Doorns; a development communication challenge for developmental local governmentBotha, Johannes Rudolf 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Xenophobic hostility is not an unfamiliar concept – it is practiced all over the world, also in
South Africa. Defined by the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) as a
deep dislike of non-nationals by nationals of a recipient state, it constitutes a violation of
the human rights of a targeted group, threatening the very principals upon which the young
democracy is modelled on. What distinguishes xenophobia in South Africa from the rest of
the world is its violent manifestation. In this country xenophobia is more than just an
attitude, it is a violent practise, fuelled by racism, intolerance, ignorance and incapacity to
deliver on developmental expectations.
The 2008 xenophobic attacks in major centres in South Africa stunned the local and
international communities, causing researchers to rush in search of answers. Just as the
furore turned into complacency, on 17 November 2009, 3000 Zimbabwean citizens living
in the rural community of De Doorns in the Western Cape were displaced as a result of
xenophobic violence. Reasons for the attacks vary, with some blaming the contestation for
scarce resources, others attribute it to the country’s violent past, inadequate service
delivery and the influence of micro politics in townships.
In assessing the reasons for the attacks the study claims that the third tier of government
in terms of its Constitutional developmental mandate fails to properly engage with
communities on their basic needs; that its inability to live up to post-apartheid expectations
triggers frustration into violent xenophobic action. The De Doorns case offers valuable
insight into the nature and scope of the phenomenon in rural areas, highlighting local
government’s community participation efforts in exercising its developmental responsibility
and dealing with the issue of xenophobia. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Xenofobie is nie ’n onbekende verskynsel nie, dit kom reg oor die wêreld, ook in Suid-
Afrika voor. Gedefinieer deur die Suid Afrikaanse Menseregte Kommissie as ’n diep
gesetelde afkeur aan vreemdelinge deur die inwoners van ’n gasheer land,
verteenwoordig dit ’n skending van menseregte en hou dit ’n bedreiging vir die jong
demokrasie in. Xenofobie in Suid-Afrika word gekenmerk deur die geweldadige aard
daarvan. Hier verteenwoordig dit meer as ’n ingesteltheid, dit is ’n geweldadige uiting van
gevoelens, aangespoor deur, rassisme, onverdraagsaamheid, onverskilligheid en die
onvermoë om aan ontwikkelings-verwagtinge te voldoen.
Die 2008 xenofobiese aanvalle in die stedelike gebiede van Suid-Afrika het die land en die
wêreld diep geraak en ’n soeke na oplossings ontketen. Op 14 November 2009 word die
gerustheid na die 2008 woede erg versteur toe 3 000 Zimbabwiërs in De Doorns in die
Wes-Kaap deur xenofobiese geweld ontheem is. Redes wat aangevoer word wissel vanaf
mededinging vir werksgeleenthede tot die land se geweldadige verlede, onvoldoende
dienslewering en die invloed van mikro politiek in woonbuurte.
Met die oorweging van redes vir die aanvalle maak die studie daarop aanspraak dat die
derde vlak van regering in terme van sy Konstitusionele ontwikkelings-mandaad gefaal het
om na behore met die gemeenskappe rondom hul behoeftes te skakel, dat die regering se
onvermoë om aan die post-apartheid verwagtinge te voldoen frustrasie in xenofobiese
geweld laat oorgaan het. Die De Doorns geval bied waardevolle insig in die aard en
omvang van xenofobiese geweld in landelike gebiede en lê klem die plaaslike regering se
hantering van openbare deelname in terme van sy ontwikkelings verpligtinge.

Icons of war photography : how war photographs are reinforced in collective memory : a study of three historical reference images of war and conflictGassner, Patricia 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil (Journalism))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / There are certain images of war that are horrific, frightening and at the same time, due
to an outstanding compositional structure, they are fascinating and do not allow its observers
to keep their distance. This thesis examines three images of war that have often been
described as icons of war photography. The images “children fleeing a napalm strike” by Nick
Ut, “the falling soldier” by Robert Capa and Sam Nzima’s photograph of Hector Pieterson are
historical reference images that came to represent the wars and conflicts in which they were
taken. It has been examined that a number of different factors have an impact on a war
photograph’s awareness level and its potential to commit itself to what is referred to as
collective consciousness. Such factors are the aesthetical composition and outstanding formal
elements in connection with the exact moment the photograph was taken, ethical implications
or the forcefulness of the event itself.
As it has been examined in this thesis, the three photographs have achieved iconic
status due to different circumstances and criteria and they can be described as historical
reference images representing the specific wars or conflicts. In this thesis an empirical study
was conducted, questioning 660 students from Spain, South Africa and Vietnam about their
awareness level regarding the three selected photographs. While the awareness level of the
Spanish and the South African image was rather high in the countries of origin, they did not
achieve such a high international awareness level as the Vietnamese photograph by Nick Ut,
which turned out to be exceptionally well-known by all students questioned. Overall, findings
suggest that the three selected icons of war photography have been anchored in collective
memory.

The role of the church towards the Pondo revolt in South Africa from 1960-1963Mnaba, Victor Mxolisi 31 May 2006 (has links)
In the year 2004 South Africa celebrated its first ten years of democracy, which reflected the success of the struggle for the liberation of this country. The year 1960 was considered as a year of strong resistance throughout South Africa. Political leaders like Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo, Robert Sobukwe, Raymond Mhlaba, Chief Albert Luthuli, Walter Sisulu, Ahmed Kathrada, Lionel Bernstein, Dennis Goldberg and others played a vital role in leading the black people to resist the plan of the current Prime Minister Hendrick Verwoerd, who deprived Africans of their citizenship by forcing the Bantustan system upon them.
On the 6th June 1960 more than four thousand Pondos from eastern Pondoland (Bizana, Lusikisiki, Flagstaff and Ntabankulu) met at Ngquza Hill with the intention of discussing their problems. They demanded the withdrawal of the hated system of the Bantu Authorities Act, the representation of all South Africans in the Republic's Parliament, relief from increased taxes and the abolition of the pass system. Before these problems were tabled before the people, a military force had occupied Ngquza Hill. The peaceful meeting was turned into a massacre of innocent people, when police shot victims, tear-gassed them and beat them with batons. Eleven people were killed, many of them were shot in the backs of their heads; and more than 48 casualties were hospitalized and arrested. The Paramount Chief, Botha Sigcau, was blamed for the massacre because he was seen as supporting the government, and this led to the uprising in Pondoland from 1960 to 1963.
This event happened three months after the Sharpeville shooting of the 21st March 1960. More than 200 casualties were reported and 69 unarmed protesters were shot dead outside the police station. The ANC and PAC, the liberation movements of the day, were banned and a state of emergency was declared. The Nationalist government suspected the African National Congress of being behind the revolt in Pondoland. The ringleaders of the Pondo Revolt were Mthethunzima Ganyile, Anderson Ganyile, Solomon Madikizela and Theophulus Ntshangela. They listed the Acts that were to be protested against as follows: The Bantu Authorities Act of 1951, the Bantu Education Act of 1953, the Pass Law System of 1952, as well as rehabilitation and betterment schemes. These Acts were imposed by the National Party through Paramount Chief Botha Sigcau. All were detrimental to the future of the Pondo people.
Church leaders such as Beyers Naude, Ben Marais and Bartholomeus Keet of the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC), Archbishop Geoffrey Clayton and Archbishop Desmond Tutu of the Anglican Church, Rev Charles Villa-Vicencio of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa, Allan Boesak of the Dutch Reformed Mission Church (DRMC) and others played a major role in confronting and challenging the Nationalist government, which justified apartheid as grounded on Scripture. Not all church leaders opposed this policy: the Dutch Reformed Church was the bedrock of apartheid, along with other Afrikaans speaking churches. The study focuses on the influence of Christian based education on the building of the Afrikaner nation. The children settling with their parents in the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek (ZAR) after the Great Trek all received Christian based education. The unique way in which both the country and the nation developed was the result of Christian based education. It had a direct influence on the development and functioning of the ZAR resulting in the forming of a Christian country with a Christian based constitution and Christian based laws. Christianity and Christian based education also influenced the social lives, culture and worldview of the people living in the ZAR, leaving a permanent mark on the Afrikaner nation.
The stern Calvinistic religion, together with the influences of early Pietism and the worldview of the Romanticism as well as the traditional Christian based education brought from the Netherlands, all worked together to mould the Afrikaners into a unique nation. Religion was the one outstanding factor that determined all aspects of the lives of the Afrikaners, from their character and worldview to their way of speech and the standard of education given to the children. The goal of all education was to enable children to study the Bible - the Handbook to Life - and to become members of the Church.
Their faith in and commitment to the Lord, was the force that kept the Afrikaners a unique nation with a strong character despite the extreme living conditions and changing circumstances through which they lived in the short years of the existence of the ZAR. The people living in the ZAR were the carriers of the influence of the Christian based education and the stories of their lives bear witness to the impact their education had on the development of the country and the nation. The legacy of Christian based education, as it was used in the ZAR, is still alive in the hearts and minds of Afrikaners today.
The focus of the thesis made it necessary to use material from several different academic fields. Aspects of South African Church history, the general and political history of South Africa and the ZAR, the history regarding the development of education, as well as the social and cultural history of the Afrikaner nation were brought together to give a picture of the impact that Christian based education had on the ZAR.

The impact of east coast fever on African homestead society in the Natal colony 1901-1910Thabede, Mfanimpela Ishmael 08 1900 (has links)
This dissertation looks at the impact of East Coast Fever on African homestead society in Natal in the period 1901-1910. The disease broke out in Natal at the beginning of 1904. With the realization that East Coast Fever was another lethal epizootic, the Natal Colonial Government introduced measures to control the spread of the disease and finally eradicate it. The campaign was, however, not successful. The disease thus spread throughout the colony and led to the loss of many cattle owned by Africans. By 1909 not more than four divisions in the colony remained free of the disease. The death of many cattle deprived Africans of the means of extensive cultivation, the source of income for the payment of rents and taxes, and Ilobolo. Many African males were forced to leave their homesteads for the towns and the mining sector in search of work. This eventually changed the nature of the homestead society. / History / M.A. (History)

Small towns can be seen as the fundamental building blocks of tbe urban system. Through time, some of these towns have lost the primary reason for their existence. Some towns that have been declining or stagnating include old mining and industrial towns, such as Indwe in the Eastern Cape or Welkom in the Free State. Some towns have also changed the main focus of tbeir economy, for example, from that of mining to that of tourism, as in the case of Utrecht in Kwa-Zulu Natal (Nel, 2002). In light of the above, this thesis seeks to critically evaluate what has happened in selected small towns in the Eastern Cape. The research investigated a number of towns in the Eastern Cape, looking at the history and influence of colonisation, population dynamics, education levels, employment opportunities, migration and the influence of capitalism on the economic and social structure of the town, as well as tbe evolution of its economy. The research sample consisted of interviews witb local historians, community leaders, development agencies and individuals who were benefiting from tbe various development initiatives/project in the towns. These interviews, in conjunction with the literature identified, were conducted in the selected small towns, assessing whether development was succeeding and, in conclusion, identifying witb reference to the study sites, what was learnt. The research process generated a number of lessons that need to be taken into consideration when attempting social and economic upliftment in small towns. Vegetation ecology of Drakensberg foothill moist grassland on Hlogoma Mountain, Underberg, KwaZulu-NatalBerruti, Sharron Marion 11 1900 (has links)
Hlogoma Mountain is a small inselberg surrounded by farms and commercial forestry in the Underberg district (KwaZulu-Natal) within the Gs10 Drakensberg Foothill Moist Grassland. As little is known about the vegetation on Hlogoma, a survey was undertaken to classify, map and describe the plant communities occurring on the inselberg. A total of 100 (16 m2) randomly stratified sample plots were placed in homogeneous vegetation units within the 117 ha study area. A TWINSPAN classification, refined by Braun-Blanquet procedures, resulted in the identification of two major communities, five communities, 12 sub-communities and four variants. All communities were described and a vegetation map constructed. Ordinations identified key environmental variables that have an impact on the vegetation at the study site. A plant species checklist was created and analysed for floristic composition; rarity and threatened species; medicinal plants; endemism; phenology; flower colour and elevation range; species richness and plant community biodiversity. A total of 467 species were identified, represented by 271 genera and 87 families. Four Red Data species and a new Aspidoglossum species were discovered. Two near-endemic genera, two endemic species and 88 near-endemic species belonging to the Drakensberg Alpine Centre were found on Hlogoma. This study showed that Hlogoma Mountain is an inselberg with high plant species richness and endemism, and is a refuge of conservation importance for biodiversity. / Environmental Sciences / M. This thesis investigates the trajectory traced from Sarah Baartman, a Khoisan woman exploited in Europe during the nineteenth century, to a contemporary writing workshop with circumcised, immigrant West African women in Harlem New York by way of a selection of African women's memoirs. The selected African women's texts used in this work create a new testimony of speech, fragmenting a historically dominant Euro-American gaze on African women's bodies. The excerpts form a discursive space for reclaiming self and as well as a defiant challenge to Western porno-erotic voyeurism. The central premise of this thesis is that while investigating Eurocentric (a)historical narratives of Baartman, one finds an implicitly racist and sexist development of European language employed not solely with Baartman, but contemporaneously upon the bodies of Black women of Africa and its Diaspora, focusing predominantly on the "anomaly of their hypersexual" genitals. This particular language applied to the bodies of Black women extends into the discourse of Western feminist movements against African female circumcision in the 21st century. Nawal el Saadawi, Egyptian writer and activist and Aman, a Somali exile, write autobiographical texts which implode a western "silent/uninformed circumcised African woman" stereotype. It is through their documented life stories that these African women claim their bodies and articulate nationalist and cultural solidarity. This work shows that Western perceptions of Female Circumcision and African women will be juxtaposed with African women's perceptions of themselves. Ultimately, with the Nitiandika Writers Workshop in Harlem New York, the politicized outcome of the women who not only write their memoirs but claim a vibrant sexual (not mutilated or deficient) identity in partnership with their husbands, ask why Westerners are more interested in their genitals than how they are able to provide food, shelter and education for the their families, as immigrants to New York. The works of Saadawi, Aman and the Nitandika writers disrupt and ultimately destroy this trajectory of dehumanization through a direct movement from an assumed silence (about their bodies, their circumcisions and their status as women in Africa) to a directed, historically and culturally grounded "alter" speech of celebration and liberation. / English Studies / D. Includes bibliographical references (leaves 231-239) / Chapter one begins by introducing and orientating the reader to the study and the purpose of the study, namely the revelation of God. It also opens up what is central to the study by a way of a problem statement concerning this revelation of God, the black church and the human condition. The aims of the study and the research methodology are set out. The chapter ends with a hypothesis concerning the future doctrine of revelation and the prospects of this revelation in the lives of black people.
Chapter two entails discussion on God and the church, as it pertains to revelation, starting with a historical account of Christian theology on the subject of revelation. The subject of revelation is engaged on an existential level, particularly the main areas of Christian theology, namely; special and general revelation. This is a section that puts both concepts within black experience, to see the viability for a black ecclesiology and black theology. Chapter two moves on to contend that for black church, there is a serious theological insurgent that is necessary and it is part and parcel of God’s revelation to blacks and the oppressed. This outlook places a section of critical reasoning in South African context and society concerning God’s revelation.
Chapter three engages a philosophical meditation, ascribing meditation as a state of self-reflection for the black church and black theology. This meditation is cognisant of black experience and is self-diagnosis concern God and humanity, particularly the dehumanising, (how it must affirm essence and substance). The meditation of the black church engages the concept of absurdity as Camus (1995) (also see Melancon 1983) has posited the absurd as a malaise in the world and silence of the word to that malaise. The absurd is also linked to theodicy, however, the black experience and the encounter with God transcends absurdity and theodicy. As part of the transcending aspect of the black experience, the research considers Western atheism, Christianity and death of God, whose burial is in the mind, souls and bodies of blacks. The chapter then moves on to discuss the black church as a receptor of God’s revelation, the new image of the crucified and the new metaphysics guaranteeing the upliftment of blacks.
Chapter four focuses on the black invisibility and the hiddenness of God, it is seeing invisibility and hiddenness as linked together. The chapter also focuses on the need for black visibility rooted in the ontological and physiological expression and experience of being human; Imago Dei. The chapter links black visibility with the concept of whiteness, being a dehumanising political identity imposed on the people of colour. The chapter then translates into the context of visibility, invisibility and God’s revelation within the economic South African context. The final analysis of the chapter is a confession of God’s revelation rooted in God’s visibility and running parallel to that of black visibility.
Chapter five proposes that the black experience and the use of the Bible Sola Sriptura, as it reveals the black church as part of church history. As such, it takes the early church’s reading of the New Testament and understanding of Christology through kenosis; the emptying of God to be human and using that paradigm to link Christ’s human experience and the experience of the dehumanising and humanising that of blacks. The chapter concludes with a Christology and black Messiah, who links the secular and divine, general and special revelation.

This study explores approaches and strategies to implement in multicultural English-medium
secondary schools for the management and education of black pupils with limited proficiency
in English. It attempts to identify means of enhancing and accelerating the mastery by such
pupils of English at a level sufficient to support their cognitive-academic needs.
An account is given of those elements of the South African education system that have
contributed to the disadvantagement that such children bring to the multic,llttu'al classroom.
Relevant theories of bilingual education create a theoretical context for the qualitative research
that follows, in which the experiences are recorded of educators at three schools where the
needs of limited-English-proficient (LEI') pupils have been addressed. Data gathering was by
means of focus-group interviews.
Based Oll this research, guidelines are offered to help multicultural schools design policies and
