Numerical Insights Into the Effect of Spacing on Axial Resistance of Auger Cast PilesCorrea Prada, Edgar Camilo 01 January 2023 (has links) (PDF)
The present thesis evaluates numerically and experimentally if the axial capacity of Auger Cast Piles (ACPs) constructed in interbedded layers of granular soil and Limestone should be reduced as a function of pile spacing. The numerical component of this thesis includes a series of parametric studies that consider different sets of normalized spacings, stiffness ratios, relative densities, unconfined compressive strengths, and installation effects for multiple subsurface conditions. The experimental program designed herein involves the construction of multiple components for a laboratory testing program of small-scale physical models that will validate the results of the numerical models in terms of capacities, efficiency ratios and normalized spacings.

3-D Printing, Characterizing and Evaluating the Mechanical Properties of 316L Stainless Steel Materials with Gradient MicrostructureStephen, Juanita Peche 24 March 2021 (has links)
Making gradient in the microstructure of metals is proven to be a superior method for improving their mechanical properties. In this research, we 3D print, characterize and evaluate the mechanical properties of 316L Stainless Steel with a gradient in their microstructure. During 3D printing, the gradient in the microstructure is created by tailoring the processing parameters (hatch spacing, scanning speed, and laser power and scanning speed) of the Selective Laser Melting (SLM). The Materials with Graded Microstructure (MGMs) are characterized by optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Image processing framework is utilized to reveal the distribution of cells and melt pools shapes and sizes in the volume of the material when the processing parameters change. It is shown that the laser power, scanning speed and the hatch spacing have a more significant effect on the size and shape of cells and melt pools compared to the speed. Multiple Dog bones are 3D printed with a microstructure that has smaller features (cells and melt polls) at the edges of the structure compared to the center. Tensile and fatigue tests are performed and compared for samples with constant and graded microstructures. / Master of Science / The mechanical performance of Selective Laser Melting (SLM) fabricated materials is an important topic in research. Strengthening the performance of these materials can be achieved through implementing a gradient within the microstructure, referred to as Materials with Graded Microstructure (MGMs). A complicated microstructure can weaken the microstructure, and this can be resolved by optimizing the microstructure during SLM 3D printing, in which the processing parameters are tailored. In this study, the mechanical properties of these MGMs were characterized and evaluated. The gradient in these materials were created by modifying SLM process parameters (scanning speed, hatch spacing, and laser power and scanning speed) during the build. Optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to characterize these the microstructure of these MGMs, and image processing was used to examine the distribution of cells and melt pools characteristics throughout the region where the processing parameters changed. This investigation shows that laser power, scanning speed, and hatch spacing have a direct effect on the size and shape of the cells and melt pools, compared to scanning speed, which shows an effect on melt pools. Dog bone structures are 3-D printed with a graded microstructure that has small cells and melt pools at the edges, compared to the center, by changing the laser power and scanning speed. Tensile and fatigue analysis are performed and compared for samples with constant and graded microstructures, which reveal that the mechanical properties of the MGMs perform similar to the parameter at the edges, but differently in fracture mechanics.

Effet du type d’agencement temporel des répétitions d’une information sur la récupération explicite / Effect of the type of temporal schedule of item repetitions on explicit retrievalGerbier, Emilie 20 May 2011 (has links)
How information is repeated over time determines future recollection of this information. Studies in psychology revealed a distributed practice effect, that is, one retains information better when its occurrences are separated by long lags rather than by short lags. Our studies focused specifically on cases in which items were repeated upon several days. We compared the efficiency of three different temporal schedules of repetitions: A uniform schedule that consisted in repetitions occurring with equal intervals, an expanding schedule that consisted in repetitions occurring with longer and longer intervals, and a contracting schedule that consisted in repetitions occurring with shorter and shorter intervals. In Experiments 1 and 2, the learning phase lasted one week and the retention interval lasted two days. It was shown that the expanding and uniform schedules were more efficient than the contracting schedule. In Experiment 3, the learning phase lasted two weeks and the retention interval lasted 2, 6, or 13 days. It was shown that the superiority of the expanding schedule over the other two schedules appeared gradually when the retention interval increased, suggesting that different schedules yielded different forgetting rates. We also tried to test major theories of the distributed practice effect, such as the encoding variability (Experiment 4) and the study-phase retrieval (Experiment 2) theories. Our results appeared to be consistent with the study-phase retrieval theory. We concluded our dissertation by emphasizing the importance of considering findings from other areas in cognitive science–especially neuroscience and computer science–in the study of the distributed practice effect.

Previous issue date: 2018-02-16 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior - CAPES / Group living animals, like most primates, benefit from a reduction in predation risk and an improvement in their potential to compete for food with other groups. However, gregariousness also increases intragroup food competition that can modulate within-group agonism and interindividual spatial patterns. We evaluated the influence of fruit availability and consumption (degree of frugivory) on the agonistic behavior and interindividual distance in two populations of Gray woolly monkeys living in forest fragments in southwestern Brazilian Amazonia. We recorded 165 intragroup agonistic interactions in a feeding context via the ?all occurrences? method and 3,549 records of spacing via scan sampling. Fruit consumption presented a direct relationship with agonistic and spacing behavior, whereas our estimate of fruit availability was a good predictor only for spacing. Woolly monkey selection of food patches composed of trees with diameter at breast height almost fourfold than that of the trees found in the phenology plots might explain the lack of relationship between fruit availability and agonism. The proportion of time (50%) that woolly monkeys had no nearby (<5 m) neighbors is compatible with a strategy of reducing intragroup fruit competition by managing interindividual distances. In sum, we presented the first evidence of aggressive intragroup feeding competition in Lagothrix cana and demonstrate the influence of fruit availability and consumption on some aspects of the social system of woolly monkeys.

Correlation of fatigue striation spacing to loading history in aeronautic Al alloy, AMS 7475 T7351.Ruchert, Cassius Olivio Figueiredo Terra 29 August 2003 (has links)
This work discusses the relationship between striation spacing, i.e. the microscopic crack propagation rate, SL (local) e SP (projected), as measured in post-mortem fractographic inspection of fatigue fractured surfaces, and the macroscopic crack propagation rate, da/dN, as monitored during fatigue crack growth tests. Compact tensile specimens C(T) were extracted in LT orientation from the core of a laminated plate of a SAE-AMS 7475-T7351 Al alloy and subsequently fatigue tested either at constant load or at constant ΔK, at room temperature, according to ASTM-E647. For constant amplitude loading fatigue tests, da/dN- ΔK data points were obtained for Regions II and III of crack growth curve. For constant ΔK fatigue tests, four ΔK levels were selected to give crack growth rates typically ranging from 0.15 to 2.4 μm/cycle. Additionally, KIC fracture toughness tests were performed in both LT and TL directions, according to ASTM E1820. SEM fractographic analysis was conducted on constant ΔK fatigue specimens, in order to determine striation spacing created during the fatigue test. Macro- and microscopic crack growth rates were compared and good correlation have been obtained for data within the range from 0,1 to 1,0 μm/ciclo. Using the technique proposed by Berkovitz, loading history was estimated by the K-factor parametrization and the results were compared to the true loading spectrum imposed by the testing machine. Using the local striation spacing SL and for ΔK values lower than 23 MPam 1/2 (Paris region), the estimated loading exhibits an error less than 15%. Propagation life estimated by local striation spacing (microscopic crack growth rate) was compared to the true propagation life obtained from macroscopic crack growth rate values and the absolute difference between them was less than 15,7%. These results suggest that both life and loading history can be adequately estimated using the local SL striation spacing values.

Nouveaux alliages Fe-Co magnétiques pour l’aéronautique, à microstructure partiellement recristallisée et à texture fortement orientée / New magnetic Fe-Co alloys, having a partially recrystallized microstructure and strongly oriented texture, for aeronautic applicationsNabi, Brahim 27 January 2014 (has links)
Magnetic and mechanical properties of Fe-49%Co-2%V and Fe-27%Co alloys, used in electric generators and transformers of the aircraft, have been investigated as a function of heat treatments. As regards to Fe-49%Co-2%V alloy, experimental results have shown that the magnetic and mechanical properties depend on the boundary spacing, which separate the microstructure crystallites, whatever the recrystallized fraction. The coercivity depends linearly on the inverse of the boundary spacing and the yield strength follows a modified Hall Petch relationship by taking into account the sub-grain size. Moreover, a linear relationship between the frictional stress and the long range order degree measured by neutron diffraction has been established. Finally, based on the experiment, a square polynomial degree relationship between the magnetic losses and the yield stress has been proposed. As respect to the Fe-27%Co alloy, the evolution of the {011}<100> Goss component during the manufacturing process has been investigated. This sought component is favorable for the magnetic properties of the sheet. It has been found that the origin of this texture is related to its development by shearing during hot rolling. Moreover, the development of the {111}<112> cold deformation texture was studied. It has been established by coupling EBSD analysis and simulation based on VPSC model that the {110}<111> system is the predominant active slip system during the plastic deformation. During the deformation, the Goss and the rotated Cube ({001}<110>) components, rotate of 35° and 55° respectively with regard to the transverse direction. That happens in order to place the active slip plane {110} in the favorable position for gliding to develop the {111}<112> component.

Estimativa da razão de carga a partir da análise fratográfica da relação entre a altura e espaçamento inter-estrias de uma liga de Alumínio aeronáutica AMS 7475-T7351 / Estimation of the load ratios by quantitative fractographic analysis of the ratio between height and the striation spacing of an aeronautical aluminium alloy AI AMS 7475-T7351Messias Filho, Aristides Alves 19 May 2006 (has links)
This work aims at to method to determine the load ratio R through of measure, on the fractured of surfaces the relation between the width striation spacing (s) and the height of the striation (H). It is of knowledge that the spacing (s), if correlates with the fatigue crack growth rates da/dN, whereas the curve da/dN x ΔK depends on the load ratio R. For this evaluation compact tension C(T) specimens had been extracted in the L- T orientation of a laminate plate of the aluminum alloy SAE-AMS 7475 T7351.These test had been carried out of two different forms. The first one, for attainment of relative data to region II of the curve da/dN x ΔK, being, in this in case that used four different load ratios (R=O,1; R=0,3; R=0,5; R=0,7). In the other in case that, the fatigue crack growth rates had been carried out under ΔK constant and used same the four levels of load ratios R for determination of the curve of constant da/dN x ΔK. The applied levels of ΔK had been taken in the region II of the curve da/dN x ΔK. The fractographic analysis for electronic microscopy was lead on the surfaces of the specimens tested in fatigue with constant ΔK. This was made to determine the striation spacing (s) and height (H) of the striations for each constant level of ΔK. It was observed that the fatigue crack growth rates (da/dN) and the striation spacing (s) suffers direct influence with the variation of ΔK. Also, was observed that the relation of proportionality of 1:1 between them is only valid for levels of da/dN in the range of 0,1 to 1,0 mm/cycle. The values of the relationship of the striation dimensions (H/s) suffer significant influence with the increasing of load ratios R. However, were evidenced that the value of Kmax. does not have influence in this relationship. It was found that the width of the striation corresponds to the value of (da/dN) and that the relation between the height and the striation of spacing (H/s) had a direct correspondence with the load ratios R that has signifficant effect on the fatigue crack growth rates.
