No. of bitstreams: 1 Viviane Jurema Lopes Borges Rodrigues.pdf: 780077 bytes, checksum: c60257b425b95e0377eca176e4335872 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2003-03-13 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata ), cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis), Chinese cabbage (Brassica pekinnensis) and broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica) have high economic expression in the Agreste region in the State of Pernambuco, Brazil. However, the occurrence of foliar diseases such as Alternaria black spot, caused by Alternaria brassicicola, represent great worry in farming systems areas. Thus, this research aimed to analyze the epidemiology of Alternaria black spot on Taibyo cultivar of Chinese cabbage in different farming systems (conventional, organic and protected); at four transplant seasons and two irrigation systems under organic farming; at three transplant spacing under conventional farming; as well as analyze the comparative epidemiology of Alternaria black spot in 22 brassica cultivars being nine broccoli, five Chinese cabbage, four cauliflower andfour cabbage, under conventional and organic farming systems. Evaluations of the beginning of initial symptoms (BIS) and severity of the disease on every leaf of 10 plants were made. Disease progress curves were ploted, and epidemiology were compared through by BIS, maximum disease severity (ymax), disease progress rate (DPR), and the area under disease progress curves (AUDPC) in all experiments. The October 2000 transplant season was the most propitious to Alternaria black spot, while the July 2001 transplant season was unfavorable to disease development, since it took longer for the symptoms to show, and the values of ymax and DPR were lower than in other periods. Comparing the three farming systems, the highest values of ymax, DPR and AUDPC were observed in organic farming, indicating that this condition was the most favorable to Alternaria black spot. Trickle irrigation compared to the sprinkle system showed lower development of Alternaria blackspot, represented by lower values of ymax, DPR and AUDPC. As far as spacing is concerned, the combination 0.33 x 0.50 m showed the lowest values of ymax and AUDPC. All brassicacultivars evaluated were susceptible to A. brassicicola. In most situations, significative difference was detected among cultivars grown in the same farming system. Higher disease intensity was obeserved in organic farming system. Chinese cabbage (Tropical Pride and Tropical Delight), cauliflower (Arfak), and cabbage (Fuyutoyo and Rubro) had the lowest disease levels. . On all situations, significative correlations were noted among the severity of Alternaria black spot disease and both the highest temperature average and the relative air humidity in the 14 days prior to the disease evaluation.

Estimativa da razão de carga a partir da análise fratográfica da relação entre a altura e espaçamento inter-estrias de uma liga de Alumínio aeronáutica AMS 7475-T7351 / Estimation of the load ratios by quantitative fractographic analysis of the ratio between height and the striation spacing of an aeronautical aluminium alloy AI AMS 7475-T7351

Aristides Alves Messias Filho 19 May 2006 (has links)
This work aims at to method to determine the load ratio R through of measure, on the fractured of surfaces the relation between the width striation spacing (s) and the height of the striation (H). It is of knowledge that the spacing (s), if correlates with the fatigue crack growth rates da/dN, whereas the curve da/dN x &#916K depends on the load ratio R. For this evaluation compact tension C(T) specimens had been extracted in the L- T orientation of a laminate plate of the aluminum alloy SAE-AMS 7475 T7351.These test had been carried out of two different forms. The first one, for attainment of relative data to region II of the curve da/dN x &#916K, being, in this in case that used four different load ratios (R=O,1; R=0,3; R=0,5; R=0,7). In the other in case that, the fatigue crack growth rates had been carried out under &#916K constant and used same the four levels of load ratios R for determination of the curve of constant da/dN x &#916K. The applied levels of &#916K had been taken in the region II of the curve da/dN x &#916K. The fractographic analysis for electronic microscopy was lead on the surfaces of the specimens tested in fatigue with constant &#916K. This was made to determine the striation spacing (s) and height (H) of the striations for each constant level of &#916K. It was observed that the fatigue crack growth rates (da/dN) and the striation spacing (s) suffers direct influence with the variation of &#916K. Also, was observed that the relation of proportionality of 1:1 between them is only valid for levels of da/dN in the range of 0,1 to 1,0 mm/cycle. The values of the relationship of the striation dimensions (H/s) suffer significant influence with the increasing of load ratios R. However, were evidenced that the value of Kmax. does not have influence in this relationship. It was found that the width of the striation corresponds to the value of (da/dN) and that the relation between the height and the striation of spacing (H/s) had a direct correspondence with the load ratios R that has signifficant effect on the fatigue crack growth rates.

This study aims to evaluate the behavior and plasticity in the yield and grain quality of three rice hybrids with different sowing arrangements in the density and row spacing. The experimental field was conducted in rice season 2010/2011 in Capão do Leão, Viamão and Uruguaiana at Rio Grande do Sul state. Three different sowing arrangements, involving row spacing with 17 cm, 34 cm and 17cm intercalated with 34 cm which corresponded respectively to densities of 40 kg.ha-1, 20 kg.ha-1 and 32 kg.ha-1. The experimental design used was randomized blocks with sub divided plots with three replications considering each location as a replication. Were evaluated the yield and grain quality. The results show that the grain yield and grain quality components of hybrid rice were not affected by sowing arrangement. The hybrids behavior demonstrates the plasticity to compensate lower densities and different distance between planting rows. This allow recommendations of seeding rates and row spacing for these hybrids reducing the amount of seed to be sown per area compared with what is currently recommended. It means cost reduction and can make the use of this technology more attractive and widely used in commercial rice fields.

Strategies to improve yield and quality of sweet sorghum as a cash crop for small scale farmers in Botswana

Balole, Thabsile Virginia 03 May 2002 (has links)
Strategies to improve stem yield and juice quality in sweet sorghum were investigated in this study. Seed quality of sixty five accessions (landraces) from Botswana was investigated. Standard germination tests revealed that only 66% of the accessions had germination percentages in excess of 85%. The Accelerated Ageing test showed that only 50%of the 26 accessions had germination percentages above 80%. The results indicated that Botswana sweet sorghum seed quality is generally poor. Seed development and maturity observations demonstrated that maximum seed quality occurred 14 to 17 days after mass maturity (physiological maturity) and this coincided with maximum seed germination. These results suggest that harvesting sweet sorghum seed prior to mass maturity can lower seed quality. Farmers should, therefore be advised to select plants intended for seed harvesting and allow them to mature properly before the seeds are harvested. Differences in seed colour, shape and compactness of the inflorescences were observed amongst the 65 landraces collected from farmers in Botswana. Ten landraces were characterised and from the results it was evident that there was a range of genetic diversity which can be utilized in the improvement of the crop. Large panicles were characteristic of most sweet sorghum landraces, the effect of tiller, panicle and floret removal on juice quality was consequently studied. Removal of panicles and florets significantly improved juice quality whilst removal of tillers did not. Selection and breeding of genotypes with small panicles and male sterile varieties may improve juice quality and should be investigated. Effect of planting date, spacing and nitrogen were investigated. Early planting (October) resulted in increased stem yields but reduced juice quality. A 30 cm intra-row spacing resulted in high stem yields per plant and good juice quality. Nitrogen fertilisation increased stem yield and improved juice quality. On the bases of the results obtained from this study, early planting (October), application of 60 kg N ha-¹, and 30 cm intra-row spacing could be recommended for sweet sorghum production in pure stands. In pure stands yields of more than 37 000 stems (per hectare) of good quality can be attained. These could be sold at an estimated price of P2.00 (R2.25) per stem indicating the potential of sweet sorghum as a cash crop. However, its economic viability depends on the price elasticity in the supply - demand function. / Dissertation (PHD)--University of Pretoria, 2003. / Plant Production and Soil Science / unrestricted

The plastic limit and workability of soils

Barnes, Graham Edward January 2013 (has links)
Previous thread rolling methods for the plastic limit are shown to be inadequate and inaccurate. Alternative methods for the plastic limit are shown to be imprecise and unreliable. The strength-based concept and use of the fall-cone test to determine the plastic limit are shown to be flawed. An apparatus that replicates Atterberg’s rolling technique, devised and developed by the author, is described, referred to as the Barnes Apparatus. A thread of soil is rolled between two plates configured to permit extrusion and reduction of diameter with much less operator interference than with the standard test and judgement of the crumbling condition is eliminated. Using a loading device nominal stresses are derived and from dial gauge readings diametral strains are determined for each rolling traverse of the soil thread. Toughness has previously only been studied in an empirical or qualitative manner. From plots of nominal stress vs. strain the workability or toughness of the plastic soil is determined as the work/unit volume. The apparatus and test are appropriate to a wide range of soils. Threads are tested over a range of water contents from near the sticky limit to the brittle state. Good correlations between toughness and water content display an abrupt ductile-brittle transition and give an accurate definition of the plastic limit. From the correlations useful properties are obtained such as the maximum toughness at the plastic limit, the toughness limit, the water content at zero toughness, the stiffness transition, the toughness coefficients, the toughness index and the workability index. An investigation into the significance of the soil thread diameter of 3 mm in the standard plastic limit test has found that as the water content of a soil reduces it undergoes a transition from fully plastic, to cracked, to brittle, largely regardless of the diameter of the thread. It is recommended that the 3 mm diameter requirement is withdrawn from the standard test procedure as unnecessary and emphasis placed on observing the behaviour of the soil thread as it is rolled by hand. A review of the relationship between the clay matrix and the granular particles in a soil has found that the linear law of mixtures and activity index are appropriate only at high clay contents. The terms granular spacing ratio and matrix porosity are introduced to explain the effect of the granular particles on the toughness and plastic limit. An analysis confirms that with small diameter soil threads large granular particles affect the results disproportionately. An aggregation ratio term is introduced to explain the change in toughness in the clay matrix as its water content reduces towards the plastic limit. To assess the effect of granular particles in a clay matrix on the toughness and plastic limit the results of tests conducted on mixtures of a high plasticity clay and silt, and sand particles of two different sizes are discussed. Smaller particle sizes are found to have a greater effect on reducing the toughness and the plastic limit of the clay. In the ceramics industry mixing different clays together to obtain suitable properties is common. The toughness and plastic limits of two pairs of mixed clays do not follow the linear law of mixtures but are dependent on the total clay content and the content of a dominant clay mineral.

Development of strategies to reduce unmet need for modern contraception among agro-pastoral women in Eastern Ethiopia

Dereje Kifle Moges 03 1900 (has links)
The aim of the study was to develop strategies to reduce the unmet need for modern contraception among agro-pastoral women. The objectives of the study were to determine the prevalence of unmet need for modern contraception, determine the factors associated with unmet need for modern contraception, and explore the barriers that hindered agro-pastoral women from using modern contraception. A mixed-method research design was used to conduct the study. Data were collected from agro-pastoral women and family planning service providers. Questionnaire and individual in-depth interviews were used to collect the data. The validity and reliability of the quantitative data and trustworthiness of the qualitative data were ensured. Use of standard data collection tools, employing method and data triangulation, and documenting all the procedures of data collection and analysis were among the ways employed to do so The quantitative data were analysed using simple descriptive statistics and multivariate logistic regression. Thematic analysis was employed to analyse the qualitative data. Ethical principles of research such as beneficence, justice, informed consent, respect for persons, privacy and confidentiality and scientific integrity were considered to conduct the study. The study revealed an unmet need of 29.2% (n=112) for modern contraception among agro-pastoral women. The unmet need for birth spacing constituted 21.1% (n=81), whereas the unmet need for birth limiting was 8.1% (n=31). The age of the women, the number of living children, knowledge of modern contraceptive methods, and knowledge of FP service centres were found to be associated with women‘s unmet need for modern contraception. Lack of time and money, lack of knowledge about modern contraception, and fear of side effects were the major individual-level barriers. There were also culture-related factors such as the need for many children that hindered agro-pastoral women from using modern contraception. Moreover, the study disclosed that religious unacceptability and husband‘s and relatives‘ opposition were also among the mentioned barriers. The quality of FP service provision in terms of the competence and behaviour of health service providers, unavailability and inaccessibility of FP service, were also indicated as barriers. The findings informed the development of strategies to reduce agro-pastoral women‘s unmet needs for modern contraception in Eastern Ethiopia. The study further recommended that the health bureaus of the region, zone and district collaborate in ensuring that agro-pastoral women realise the significance of the provision of accessible, equitable, quality modern contraception. It is also essential to equip health facilities with qualified health service providers and necessary facilities. Religious leaders should be involved in disseminating vital, relevant and empowering FP information. / Health Studies / Ph. D. (Public Health)

Standardisierungsaspekte bei der Gießtechnologieauswahl von Zylinderköpfen

Otremba, Maik 02 April 2015 (has links)

Effect of conformal cooling in Additive Manufactured inserts on properties of high pressure die cast aluminum component

Sevastopolev, Ruslan January 2020 (has links)
Additive manufacturing can bring several advantages in tooling applications especially hot working tooling as high pressure die casting. Printing of conformal cooling channels can lead to improved cooling and faster solidification, which, in turn, can possibly result in better quality of the cast part. However, few studies on advantages of additive manufactured tools in high pressure die casting are published. The aim of this study was to investigate and quantify the effect of conformal cooling on microstructure and mechanical properties of high pressure die cast aluminum alloy. Two tools each consisting of two die inserts were produced with and without conformal channels using additive manufacturing. Both tools were used in die casting of aluminum alloy. Aluminum specimens were then characterized microstructurally in light optical microscope for secondary arm spacing measurements and subjected to tensile and hardness testing. Cooling behavior of different inserts was studied with a thermal camera and by monitoring the temperature change of cooling oil during casting. Surface roughness of die inserts was measured with profilometer before and after casting.Thermal imaging of temperature as a function of time and temperature change of oil during casting cycle indicated that conformal insert had faster cooling and lower temperature compared to conventional insert. However, thermal imaging of temperature after each shot in a certain point of time showed higher maximum and minimum temperature on conformal die surface but no significant difference in normalized temperature gradient compared to the conventional insert. The average secondary dendrite arm spacing values were fairly similar for samples from conventional and conformal inserts, while more specimens from conventional insert demonstrated coarser structure. Slower cooling in conventional insert could result in the coarser secondary dendrite arm spacing.Tensile strength and hardness testing revealed no significant difference in mechanical properties of the specimens cast in conventional and conformal die inserts. However, reduced deviations in hardness was observed for samples cast with conformal insert. This is in agreement with secondary dendrite arm spacing measurements indicating improved cooling with conformal insert.Surface roughness measurement showed small wear of the inserts. More castings are needed to observe a possible difference in wear between the conventional and conformal inserts.Small observed differences in cooling rate and secondary arm spacing did not result in evident difference in mechanical properties of the aluminum alloy but the variation in properties were reduced for samples cast with conformal cooling. Future work may include more accurate measurement of cooling behavior with a thermocouple printed into the die insert, casting of thicker specimen for porosity evaluation and fatigue testing and longer casting series to evaluate the influence of conformal cooling on tool wear.
