Evaluation of loggerhead sea turtle carapace properties and prototype biomimetic carapace fabrication

The research presented in this study has been conducted in an effort to aid in the creation of a biomimetic shell that may be employed in full-scale field experiments to determine the efficacy of mitigation options to limit loggerhead mortality in boat strike incidents. The objectives of this research include the development of experimental testing procedures for the material characterization of the loggerhead carapace, and the design, fabrication, and evaluation of an artificial prototype carapace. A photographic database of wounded sea turtles in Georgia was evaluated in order to determine the primary sources of loggerhead collision injuries and the most common regions of the carapace damaged in boat strike incidents. Skeg impact was found to be the most common source of injury, with a frequency of 44%. In addition, 74% of the sea turtles reviewed sustained injuries to the center third of their carapace length, indicating this region as the most probable impact location. Material testing procedures were developed for evaluating the material properties of the loggerhead carapace. This was followed by the material testing of three loggerhead shells for the purpose of determining localized mechanical properties. Samples were harvested from the shells in a manner designed to identify potential variations in properties due the location and orientation of the coupons within the carapace. Each coupon was subjected to axial tension or three-point bending. Specialized tabs were designed for tension testing in order to accommodate the coupon's irregular geometry and minimize curvature-induced moments. The tensile test results indicated that the longitudinal and transverse properties of the loggerhead carapace were similar. The tensile strength, elongation at failure, and modulus of elasticity were determined to have percent variations of 12.2%, 10.7%, and 10.1% respectively. In contrast, the three-point bending test results indicated that the modulus of rupture and flexural modulus for the transverse samples were approximately four times greater than those of the longitudinal samples. This variation may be attributed to regions of weak tissue running transversely through the carapace. The results of the material testing were utilized in the design of two prototype composite shells. The prototypes were successful in simulating the strain at failure and force per unit width to within 10% of the loggerhead carapace. The resulting procedure may be used to create artificial shells suitable for prototype scale tests in natural environments. In addition, the material testing methods developed for this investigation may offer insight into procedures for evaluating alternate forms of rigid or curved biological specimens.

Hacia un modelo lingüístico de resumen automático de artículos médicos en español

En esta tesis se presenta un modelo lingüístico de resumen automático de artículos médicos en español que aúna criterios basados en la estructura textual, en las unidades léxicas y la estructura discursiva y sintáctico-comunicativa de los textos. El modelo se crea partiendo de la hipótesis de que los especialistas de cada ámbito emplean estrategias específicas a la hora de resumir. La validación de esta hipótesis mediante experimentos estadísticos permite tomar los artículos médicos acompañados de sus respectivos resúmenes como material de referencia para analizar, de cara a detectar las estrategias empleadas por los profesionales médicos para resumir sus textos. Una vez detectadas, estas estrategias se formalizan en forma de reglas y se diseña un modo de integración de las mismas. Esto da lugar al modelo presentado en esta tesis, del cual se implementa una parte. Los resúmenes resultantes se evalúan obteniendo buenos resultados, lo cual confirma que el modelo simula correctamente las estrategias empleadas por los especialistas y que estas se refieren a diversos aspectos lingüísticos. / In this thesis a linguistic model of automatic summarization of Spanish medical articles that joins criteria based on the textual structure, on lexical units and on the discourse and syntactic-communicative structure of texts is presented. The model is developed under the hypothesis that specialists of a domain use specific strategies when they summarize. The validation of this hypothesis by means of statistical experiments allows us to draw upon medical articles and their respective abstracts as reference in order to determine the strategies used by medical professionals. Once these strategies have been determined, they are formalized in terms of an integrated rule-based system, of which a part is implemented. The resulting summaries have been evaluated. Good results were obtained, which confirms that the model simulates correctly the strategies used by specialists and that these strategies refer to different linguistic aspects.

Bakgrund: Palliativ vård ska tillgodose behoven hos patienter med livshotande (icke botbara) sjukdomar på alla vårdnivåer i Sverige. Studier har visat att närstående till patienter i specialiserad palliativ hemsjukvård inte alltid har bemötts korrekt eller tagits på allvar vilket har resulterat i att de har slitit hårt ofta i skymundan. Att inte få rätt stöd har visat sig kunna leda till både fysiska, psykiska och psykosociala påfrestningar. Det har till exempel rapporterats om nedstämdhet, koncentrationssvårigheter och fatigue. Centralt i arbetet som sjuksköterska i specialiserad palliativ hemsjukvård är stöd till närstående då de ofta är en förutsättning för att patienten ska kunna vistas den sista tiden i livet i hemmet. Stödet bestod till stor del av samtal. Genom att bekräfta och ta närståendes oro och funderingar på allvar ökade deras välbefinnande. Syfte: Att beskriva sjuksköterskornas erfarenheter av att stödja närstående genom samtal inom specialiserad palliativ hemsjukvård. Metod: Designen var en empirisk studie med induktiv beskrivande ansats. Datainsamling skedde genom kvalitativa forskningsintervjuer. Resultat: Efter analysen framträdde svaret på de två frågeställningarna: Hur gjorde sjuksköteskorna för att etablera en god kontakt med närstående? Hur kunde sjuksköterskorna stötta närstående?   Det framkom fyra subkategorier till varje fråga. Resultatet visade att samtalet i specialiserad palliativ hemsjukvård var en stor del av det befintliga arbetet men att det inte alltid skedde under strukturerade och medvetna former. Erfarenheter av strukturerade närståendesamtal var uteslutande positiva. Diskussion: Resultatet diskuterades mot valda delar av Watson´s tio karitativa faktorer. Känslighet gentemot självet och andra, Mänsklig omsorgsrelation, Att ge uttryck för positiva och negativa känslor, Kreativ, problemlösande omsorgsprocess. / Background: Palliative care is intended to cater for the needs of patients with life threatening, non-curable, diseases at all levels of medical care in Sweden. Studies have shown that family and loved ones of patients receiving specialized palliative care in the home have not always been taken seriously or otherwise considered appropriately. This has led to them struggling under the pressure, often without acknowledgment. Not receiving the appropriate support has been shown to be a factor causing physical, psychological as well as psychosocial distresses. For example, depression, difficulties to concentrate and fatigue have been reported. Central to the work as a nurse in specialized palliative home care is to provide support to family and loved ones as it is often a necessity enabling the patient to be at home towards the end of life. The support in this case consisted largely of dialogue. By acknowledging and considering the thoughts and worries of the family, their wellbeing was increased. Aim: Describing the experiences of nurses supporting family and loved ones through dialogue within specialized palliative home care. Method: The study was by design inductive and data were collected via qualitative research interviews. Results: Following the analysis, the answer to the two questions emerged: How did nurses do to establish a good relationship with family and loved ones? How could nurses support family and loved ones? There were four subcategories for each question. The result showed that the conversation in specialized palliative home care was a major part of the existing work, but it did not always happen in structured and conscious forms. The experience of structured conversations with relatives was exclusively positive. Discussion: The result was discussed against selected parts of Watson's ten carative factors. Bibliographical and documentary researches, priority areas for scientific development and dissemination have been undertaken; interviews; image audit in the state media; diagnosis of the main scientific journalism products developed by UFMT and Unemat, as well as joint initiatives (Fapemat Ciência magazine and Rede de Dilvulgação Científica - Science Communication Network). The investigative method adopted can be characterized as Participant Observation, concieved in close association with problem solving, awareness taking or production of new knowledges (THIOLLENT, 1996, 1997). This strategy combines different techniques of social research, defined according to each stage of the investigation process. From the analysis of the scientific content published in state newspapers, it was possible to verify that these public Higher Education Institutions (HEI) do not occupy relevant place in such vehicles yet, which can be justified by the inadequacy of language or relationship channels, as well as by the necessity of a more efficient policy of divulgation. The mapping of the portals and institutional social media channels showed that the use of these vehicles can be better dynamized. Finally, the conclusions indicate that cultural and institutional differences between the two Higher Education Institutions make not viable the adoption of an integrated Policy of Scientific Communication, that is common between UFMT and Unemat. The development of actions for the dynamization of the divulgation of these institutions can be considered in the ambit of the State System of Science, Technology & Innovation. / O estudo visa identificar as iniciativas de Divulgação Científica empreendidas pela Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso (UFMT) e Universidade do Estado de Mato Grosso (Unemat), com vistas à atualização e ao aperfeiçoamento da comunicação institucional, maior interação com interlocutores e fortalecimento da imagem do estado como produtor de CT&I. Foram empreendidas pesquisas bibliográficas e documentais, áreas prioritárias de fomento e difusão científica; entrevistas; auditoria de imagem na mídia estadual; diagnóstico dos principais produtos de jornalismo científico desenvolvidos pela UFMT e Unemat, assim como iniciativas conjuntas (revista Fapemat Ciência e Rede de Divulgação Científica). O método investigativo adotado pode ser caracterizado como Pesquisa Participante, concebido em estreita associação com resolução de problemas, tomada de consciência ou produção de novos conhecimentos (THIOLLENT, 1996, 1997). Tal estratégia agrega distintas técnicas de pesquisa social, definidas em função de cada fase do processo de investigação. A partir da análise dos conteúdos científicos publicados nos jornais estaduais, foi possível verificar que essas IES públicas ainda não ocupam lugar relevante em tais veículos, o que pode ser justificado pela inadequação de linguagem ou canais de relacionamento, assim como, pela necessidade de uma política de divulgação mais eficiente. O mapeamento dos portais e canais de mídias sociais institucionais evidenciou que a utilização desses veículos ainda pode ser mais bem dinamizada. Por fim, as conclusões apontam que diferenças culturais e institucionais entre as duas IES inviabilizam a adoção de uma Política de Comunicação Científica integrada, comum entre UFMT e Unemat. O que pode ser considerado, é o desenvolvimento de ações para a dinamização de divulgação dessas instituições, no âmbito do Sistema Estadual de CT&I.

With the new public policies, a constant updating is necessary, aiming at the improvement of the quality of the experience of disabled people in the school environment and the expansion of their learning capacity. Although the theme is not new, with the advent of the Magna Carta, and the fundamental rights and guarantees of the citizen, a new systematics has been inevitable to deal with this issue. It is a controversial topic and therefore specific field research was required. There is great divergence among professionals: in favor, against or partially against total or partial inclusion. There are, therefore, those who stand up for the insertion of these children into specialized institutions or the presence of specific classrooms for all students who have some type of disability. Thus, the present work aimed at the following objectives: to reflect on the public policies of inclusive education and its applicability in the reality of Brazilian education; Understand aspects inherent to Down Syndrome, such as etiology and characteristics, as well as aspects of development and learning; To seek, understand and reflect on pedagogical practices that aim to aid in the learning process of students with Down Syndrome; And reflecting on the learning conditions offered to these students by regular education and how specialized education can contribute. For the development of the following work, it was necessary a bibliographic review in the desired area, field research in a specialized school, collection of historical data, collection of data through interviews and testimonies and, finally, the analysis of the data obtained in the research with the school, emphasizing that the methodology used was the qualitative method, through interviews conducted with semi-structured questionnaire and observation of the context, as mentioned above. It is important to mention that the montessorian pedagogy was investigated, bringing significant benefits to the learning of the students with Down's syndrome, through the adaptation of the method. / A pesquisa realizada visa ampliar a compreensão a respeito de um tema que, dia a dia, ganha força em nossa sociedade: a inclusão de pessoas com deficiência. Com as novas políticas públicas, é necessária uma constante atualização, visando o aprimoramento, a melhoria da qualidade da experiência de pessoas deficientes no ambiente escolar e a ampliação de sua capacidade de aprendizado. Embora a temática não seja nova, com o advento da Carta Magna, e os direitos e garantias fundamentais do cidadão, fez-se inevitável uma nova sistemática para lidar com essa questão. É uma temática controversa e por isso foi necessária pesquisa de campo específica. Existe grande divergência entre os profissionais: a favor, contra ou parcialmente contra a inclusão total ou parcial. Há, portanto, aqueles que defendem a inserção dessas crianças em instituições especializadas ou a presença de salas de aula específicas para todos os alunos que possuem algum tipo de deficiência. Assim, o presente trabalho pretendeu os seguintes objetivos: refletir acerca das políticas públicas de educação inclusiva e sua aplicabilidade na realidade da educação brasileira; compreender aspectos inerentes à Síndrome de Down, tais como etiologia e características, bem como aspectos do desenvolvimento e aprendizagem; buscar, compreender e refletir acerca de práticas pedagógicas que visem auxiliar no processo de aprendizagem dos alunos com Síndrome de Down; e refletir acerca das condições de aprendizagem oferecidas a esses alunos pelo ensino regular e de que maneira o ensino especializado pode contribuir. Para o desenvolvimento do trabalho que se segue, foi necessária uma revisão bibliográfica na área pretendida, pesquisa de campo em escola especializada, levantamento de dados históricos, coleta de dados através de entrevistas e depoimentos e, por fim, a análise dos dados obtidos na pesquisa junto à escola, ressaltando que a metodologia empregada foi o método qualitativo, por meio de entrevistas realizadas com questionário semiestruturado e observação do contexto, como mencionado acima. Importante mencionar que a pedagogia montessoriana foi investigada, trazendo benefícios significativos à aprendizagem do aluno com Síndrome de Down, por meio de adaptação do método.

Formação de professores para educação inclusiva na rede municipal de ensino de Floriano/PI

Um estudo sobre a formação de professores para educação inclusiva na Rede Municipal de Ensino de Floriano/PI, focando o estudante com deficiência intelectual, a escola, as práticas pedagógicas dos professores do ensino regular e do Atendimento Educacional Especializado AEE, à luz dos princípios inclusivos. Na primeira parte, realiza-se uma análise a partir de documentos da sociedade civil que fundamentam a Política de Inclusão, começando pela Carta Magna Brasileira, a Constituição Federal da República, as resoluções e os decretos presidenciais, garantindo a permanência da criança com deficiência intelectual em sala de aula, o direito à acessibilidade ao ensino e ao estudo numa escola de qualidade; o impacto do Programa de Educação Inclusiva no Município de Floriano, a implementação da política de inclusão, os avanços e os retrocessos, tendo como marco referencial o processo de inclusão educacional. Na segunda parte trata-se da formação de professores, tanto para mediar o ensino na sala de aula regular, como para operacionalizar o AEE em sala de Recurso Multifuncional. Muitos escritores e especialistas, estudiosos e pesquisadores na questão da deficiência intelectual da formação de professores foram consultados, estudados, para a formulação do referencial teórico. A terceira parte do estudo foi uma pesquisa social feita in loco com cinco professores de cinco escolas municipais, que têm matrícula de alunos com deficiência intelectual na sala de aula regular e no AEE. A escuta foi materializada através de um questionário qualitativo de treze perguntas, abertas, investigando a efetivação da política de inclusão, a formação do professor do ensino regular e do AEE e as práticas inclusivas, a partir do contato direto com os alunos com deficiência intelectual-DI. A proposta não tem a pretensão de dar uma receita para a formação de professores para educação inclusiva. É antes uma abertura de possibilidades para que os envolvidos com a formação, os próprios professores, os gestores, os familiares e a comunidade escolar se percebam como agentes e não como meros receptores de determinações legais. / This paper is a study of the training of teachers for inclusive education in the Municipal Network of Education of Floriano/PI, focusing on the intellectually deficient student, the school, the pedagogical practices of the teachers in regular education and the Atendimento Educacional Especializado AEE [Specialized Educational Services], in light of the inclusive principles. In the first part, an analysis is carried out based on documents of civil society which provide the foundations for the Inclusive Policy, beginning with the Brazilian Magna Carta that is, the Constitution of the Federal Republic, the presidential resolutions and decrees, guaranteeing the permanence of children with intellectual deficiencies in the class room, the right to accessibility to education and study in a quality school; the impact of the Inclusive Education Program in the Municipality of Floriano, the implementation of the inclusive policy, the advances and regressions, having as a referential marking point the process of inclusion in education. In the second part teacher training is dealt with, both to enable mediation of the teaching in a regular classroom, as well as to put into operation the AEE in a Multifunctional Resource classroom. Many writers and specialists and researchers on the issue of intellectual deficiency in the training of teachers were consulted, studied for the formulation of the theoretical reference. The third part of the study is a social research carried out in loco with five teachers of five municipal schools which have students with intellectual deficiency enrolled in the regular classrooms and in the AEE. The listening was materialized through a qualitative questionnaire of thirteen open questions, investigating the putting into practice of the inclusion policy, the training of the teacher of regular teaching and of AEE and the inclusive practices, based on the direct contact with the students with intellectual deficiency ID. The proposal does not intend to give a recipe for the training of teachers for inclusive education. Instead, it is to be an opening of possibilities for those who are involved with the training, the teachers themselves, the administrators, the family members and the school community to perceive themselves as agents and not as mere receivers of legal determinations.

O objetivo da presente investigação é a análise das configurações do Atendimento Educacional Especializado (AEE) na Rede Municipal de Ensino de Gravataí/RS. Com a questão_ AEE: que “atendimento” é este?_ buscou-se compreender como o Atendimento Educacional Especializado (AEE) vem se configurando em um contexto local, com ênfase nas diretrizes políticas que caracterizam o serviço e na interpretação dos professores que atuam nas salas de recursos multifuncionais. As bases teóricas que constituem a investigação podem ser identificadas a partir do pensamento sistêmico expresso por autores como G. Bateson e H. Maturana, além da abordagem do Ciclo de Políticas formulada por S. Ball, R. Bowe e A. Gold. Como lócus da pesquisa foi considerado o contexto da Rede Municipal de Educação de Gravataí/RS, com especial atenção dirigida à formação continuada dos professores do AEE. A abordagem, de natureza qualitativa, utilizou como instrumentos de coleta de dados a observação participante e análise documental. As informações foram analisadas à luz do referencial teórico, observando a emergência de elementos que caracterizam as singularidades em relação ao objeto de estudo. Observou-se uma significativa ampliação da oferta do atendimento educacional especializado no ensino comum em período posterior a 2008, com sistematização desse atendimento em 29 salas de recursos na rede constituída por 76 unidades de ensino (sendo 65 de ensino fundamental). A análise mostrou que, apesar de uma sintonia com a macropolítica, fatores locais influenciaram a busca por alternativas e diferentes leituras em relação ao AEE no contexto da prática. A formação continuada dos professores constituiu-se em um contexto de influência, de circulação e produção de textos, cuja análise resultou nas configurações do AEE nesta rede de ensino. As evidências apontam para uma supervalorização dos professores do AEE identificada na ampliação de suas atribuições, que incluem a avaliação, identificação do aluno no Censo Escolar e a promoção de formação continuada na escola. / The purpose of this research is to analyze the Specialized Educational Attendance (Atendimento Educacional Especializado - AEE) in the Municipal Teaching Network of Gravatai/RS. With the question_ AEE: What "service" is this? _ it was sought to understand how the Specialized Educational Attendance (AEE) has been configured in a local context, with emphasis on educational policies that characterize the service and the interpretation of teachers who work in Multifunctional rooms. The theoretical bases that constitute this study is acknowledged by the system thinking expressed by authors such as G. Bateson and H. Maturana, as well as the Policy Cycle approach, formulated by S. Ball, R. Bowe, A. Gold. As locus of the investigation it was deemed the context of the Gravatai/RS Municipal Teaching Network prospective, with special attention directed to the continuing education for teachers at AEE. The approach, in a qualitative nature, considered as data collection instruments the participant observation and documentation analysis. The data were analyzed in the light of the theoretical framework, observing the emergence of elements that characterize the singularities with respect to the object of study. It was observed a significant increase of the supply of specialized educational services in the regular school in the period after 2008, with systematization of this attendance in 29 resource rooms in the network composed by 76 teaching units (in which 65 are elementary schools). The analysis showed that, despite a line with the macro policy, local factors influenced the search for alternatives and different readings in relation to the AEE in the context of practice. The continuing education for teachers has constituted in a context of influence, circulation and production of texts, which analysis resulted in the settings of AEE in this education system. The evidences indicated to an overvaluation of the AEE identified by teacher assignments extension, which includes assessment, identification of the student in the school census and the promotion of continuing education in the school.

This is a qualitative research conducted through the case study method using as instruments to collect data document analysis, semi-structured interviews and participant observation. Data were collected in a municipal public school located on the outskirts, into two 1st year classes which have children with disabilities enrolled. The subjects of this study were: two teachers of ordinary classroom, the teacher of Specialized Educational Attendance - SEA, the professional support of one of the children with disabilities and school management. Further data were collected at the Educational and Clinical Care Center of Horizon-CE. The theoretical references that have supported this work were: disability models of Omote (1994) and Diniz (2012); inclusive pedagogical practices of Mittler (2003), Carvalho (2007, 2012), Magellan (2011), Diniz (2012), and Glat Pletcsh (2009, 2012); and teacher reflective education, based on studies of Nóvoa (1995), Schon (2000), Perrenoud (2001), Libâneo and Pepper (2011). The following thematic areas were discussed: Horizonte-CE educational policies, inclusive education, the SEA in school and pedagogical practices. As gathered results, the research shows that: there is an alignment between how teachers perceive their pedagogical practices and how the same is accomplished; there is a gap between the work done by the SEA and the ordinary classroom teacher; the lack of teachers training and support figures as obstacles to build an inclusive pedagogical practice. The data also revealed the lack of dialogue between the sectors that integrate the school (management, SEA and the classroom) and that teachers do not have initial neither continued education in the area, though the no passive attitude, the teacher act of seeking knowledge and commitment promote the achievement of pedagogical practices that enable access, participation and learning of children with disabilities. / Este estudo investiga como são percebidas e realizadas as práticas pedagógicas por professoras de uma escola pública do município de Horizonte-CE que atuam junto a crianças com deficiência em sala de aula comum. Trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa realizada através do método estudo de caso, na qual foram utilizados como instrumentos de coleta de dados a análise documental, a entrevista semiestruturada e a observação participante. Os dados foram coletados em uma escola pública municipal localizada na periferia, em duas turmas de 1º ano que possuem crianças com deficiência matriculadas. Foram sujeitos dessa pesquisa: duas professoras de sala de aula comum, a professora do Atendimento Educacional Especializado – AEE, o profissional apoio de uma das crianças com deficiência e a gestão da escola. Foram elencados ainda dados coletados no Centro de Atendimento Clínico e Educacional – CACE de Horizonte-CE. Os referenciais teóricos que deram sustentação a este trabalho foram: os modelos de deficiência de Omote (1994) e Diniz (2012); práticas pedagógicas inclusivas, a partir de Mittler (2003), Carvalho (2007; 2012), Magalhães (2011), Diniz (2012), Glat e Pletcsh (2009; 2012); e a formação reflexiva do professor, com base nos estudos de Nóvoa (1995), Schon (2000), Perrenoud (2001), Libâneo e Pimenta (2011). Abordamos como áreas temáticas de discussão: as políticas educacionais de Horizonte-CE, a educação inclusiva, o AEE na escola e as práticas pedagógicas. Como resultados, a pesquisa mostra que: há um alinhamento entre o modo como as professoras percebem sua prática pedagógica e como esta é realizada; existe um distanciamento entre o trabalho realizado pelo professor do AEE e o de sala de aula comum; a falta de formação e de apoio dos professores se apresenta como obstáculos para a construção de uma prática pedagógica inclusiva. Os dados revelaram ainda a escassez de diálogo entre os setores que compõem a escola (gestão, AEE e sala de aula) e que as professoras não possuem formação inicial e continuada na área, mas que a não acomodação neste discurso, a ação de buscar conhecimento e o comprometimento do professor promovem a realização de práticas pedagógicas que permitem o acesso, a participação e a aprendizagem das crianças com deficiência.
