BREWERS’ SPENT GRAIN CONVERSION TO VALUE-ADDED CHEMICALS BY LAB-SYNTHESIZED HETEROGENEOUS PHOTOCATALYSTS UNDER VISIBLE LIGHT AND MILD CONDITIONS

Baral, Sudip 01 September 2021 (has links)
Over the last several decades, there have been a tremendous developments and greatinnovations in photocatalysis process along with the development of efficient nanosized catalysts for simple approach and economic viability. In this study, magnetic core@doubleshell nanomaterials were investigated and synthesized in lab with three-step innovative approach where Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) were produced first to act as cores without using any surfactants. The magnetite/silica core–shell structure was then prepared by hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) in the presence of core particles under alkaline conditions. And the outermost shell, the α-Fe2O3/TiO2 nanoparticles, were grown over magnetic core of Fe3O4@SiO2 using coprecipitation and calcination method. Furthermore, the Fe3O4@SiO2@α-Fe2O3/TiO2 NPs were then loaded on the reduced graphene oxide (r-GO) using hydrothermal method and are also mixed by kneading with the layered double hydroxides (LDH) of Mg2+ and Al3+. These nanoparticles were characterized with scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Different model compounds like microcrystalline cellulose (90 μm), D-xylose, and sodium lignosulfonate representing cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, respectively, were converted to valuable chemicals with different NPs under visible light for different time periods. For example, valeric acid (VA) and vanillylmandelic acid (VMA) were produced when cellulose was used for the conversion with core-double shell NPS which were quantified using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Similar approach was adopted for the conversion of brewers’ spent grain (BSG), a lignocellulosic biomass, without oxygen under visible light, which yielded ethanol as the main product along with other sugars and acids of very low concentrations. The magnetic property of the nanomaterials made it easy for recycle and reuse. From a sustainability point of view, this study will fill a large need in the biomass photocatalysis field by developing core-shell multi-functional photocatalysts for direct transformation of lignocellulose into valuable chemicals under low temperatures, atmospheric pressure, and visible light from the sun.

Impact of Peroxide Speciation on the Kinetics of Oxidative Dissolution of UO2 / Effekt av peroxidspeciering på kinetik för oxidativ upplösning av UO2

Aydogan, Hazal January 2022 (has links)
Disposal of spent nuclear fuels is of great importance to prevent the environment and humans from being affected by long-lived radionuclides for 100,000 years or more. Even though the deep geological repositories are designed to remain durable for many years, spent nuclear fuel may come in contact with groundwater in case of a multi-barrier failure. The inherent radioactivity of spent nuclear fuel causes water radiolysis producing oxidizing and reducing agents. Among the radiolysis products, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is reported as a primary contributor to the oxidative dissolution of the fuel matrix, UO2. Although UO2 has low solubility in water, oxidized UO2, UO22+ , has several orders of magnitude higher solubility. This poses the risk of the radionuclides being released into the environment. Bicarbonate (HCO3–) is one of the main components of groundwater and is known to increase the dissolution of UO22+. Therefore, in this study, the effects of HCO3– concentration on the oxidative dissolution of UO2 were investigated by keeping the initial amount of H2O2 constant at 0.2 mM and changing the HCO3– concentration (1 mM, 2 mM, 5mM, and 10 mM). Besides, the effect of UO22+ on the speciation was investigated by adding uranyl nitrate (UO2(NO3)2 x 6H2O) to the systems before exposure to H2O2. The impact of speciation on the kinetics of oxidative dissolution of UO2 was analyzed. As a result of experiments, it has been concluded that the amount of dissolved UO22+ is higher in higher HCO3– concentration. Also, the rate of the UO22+ dissolution decreases with addition of UO22+ due to the complexes formed in the systems. It was observed that oxidation of UO2 is the rate limiting reaction atthe beginning of the exposure; therefore, there is a delay in the UO22+ dissolution. On the other hand, it has been seen that the HCO3– deficiency limits the dissolution capacity of the systems. Free H2O2 is the dominant peroxide species in the systems without initially added UO22+ , while -6 and -2 charged complexes are dominant in the systems with initially added UO22+. The H2O2 complexes are found more effective on the surface mechanism in the systems having lower HCO3– concentration. There is no observable trend in H2O2 consumption rate with respect to HCO3– concentration. Therefore, it was concluded that the H2O2 consumption rate is independent of dissolution reaction. Finally, the dissolution in the system without initially added UO22+ follows the first-order kinetics with respect to HCO3– concentration.

The Promise of Academic Learning Time in a Dose-Response Model of Early Reading Achievement

Heuston, Benjamin 25 November 2008 (has links) (PDF)
Reading has long been acknowledged to be a critical skill that is best acquired early in life. According to the most recent National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) reports, American public school children continue to struggle to master the basics of reading. Although federal funding in real dollars has increased consistently over time, reading scores have not followed suit, suggesting that fiscal resources have not been applied successfully to the variables that are directly related to reading acquisition and achievement. The current state of affairs therefore suggests the need for identifying a fiscally-targetable, instructionally-relevant variable with a direct, causal relationship to early-reading achievement. One way to determine whether such a relationship exists between two variables is by means of dose-response methodology. Although this methodology has not been broadly implemented in educational research, it is attractive because it allows for the formal characterization and comparison of cause-effect relationships, and may also inform practice in readily implementable ways. Researchers have noted that time spent learning (TSL), and in particular academic learning time (ALT), is a promising candidate for a dose-response relationship with student achievement in early reading. Although ALT holds promise, there have traditionally been significant difficulties in operationalizing and quantifying it. The growing prevalence of academic software in the American public classroom holds promise for overcoming these challenges and provides an opportunity to test the hypothesis that there is a dose-response relationship between ALT and student achievement in early reading.

Dimensioning study of EPR2 fuel pool cooling system / Dimensioneringsstudie av EPR2 bränslebassäng kylsystem

Rubler, Thomas January 2023 (has links)
The PTR system allows the EPR2 fuel pool to be cooled. The evacuation of the residual power fromthe pool is ensured by several heat exchangers and pumps, which have to be dimensioned in order to meetdifferent requirements. In order to dimension them, the worst-case scenario of the components must first be determined.Sensitivity to external conditions and efficiency studies enable to propose a heat exchanger design tomeet the requirements. A parametric study then allows to study more precisely the influence of thegeometry of the exchanger on the heat transfer. This allows to guide the conception of a CFD study ofthe design on the Comsol software in order to validate it. The proposed design can then be integratedinto the PTR cooling train. The train is modeled with FloMaster, in order to compute the head losses inthe hydraulic system and to propose a pump altimetry preventing cavitation. The dimensioning case of the exchangers corresponds to the operating case of the PTR trains duringunit shutdown, while the scenario that facilitates cavitation corresponds to the boiling of the fuel pool. The temperature of the cold source RRI is a sensitive data for the operation of the exchangers. In addition, the placement of the baffles and the space between the tubes play a determining role in the heat removal. It was difficult to construct the desired exchanger geometry in CFD. A compromise model was thusidentified and studied in CFD. The FloMaster study showed that the pressure drop in the PTR network isabout 15.5 mCE at the considered flow rate. Cavitation in a main train is not a problem if the pumps arelowered by at least 1.8 meters from the pool suction point. The sizing study therefore allowed us to propose a heat exchanger design close to the specifications, but this could not be precisely studied in CFD. The pressure drop study allowed to propose a pumpaltimetry preventing cavitation.

The Impact of Time in Doctor-Patient Encounters on Perceived Health Status of Children with Diabetes: Potential Mediating Roles of Shared Decision Making and Resilient Parents

Okeke, Francis, Morgan, Treaster 25 April 2023 (has links) (PDF)
In 2019, diabetes affected approximately 283,000 individuals, aged 20 years or younger, in the U.S. Due to illness symptoms (e.g., hypo/hyperglycemia) and disease-related complications (e.g., nephropathy), individuals report poor health-related quality of life. However, individual-level, family-oriented, and health care system factors may affect perceptions of a child’s overall health status. For example, beliefs of having spent enough time with the doctor may predict proactive health behaviors and perceptions of health. Overall health status may also be indirectly related to time spent in medical conversations. For instance, perceptions of shared decision-making (e.g., exploring pros and cons of treatments together) between families and providers may, in turn, foster family empowerment and resiliency (i.e., ability to adapt, cope, and overcome challenges) in the context of caring for a child with a chronic illness, with positive implications for perceived health status of their child. This study aims to examine the relationships of these variables. At the bivariate level, it was hypothesized that time spent in visits, shared decision making, family resilience, and perceived health status of the child would all be positively related. At the multivariate level, it was hypothesized that doctors working collaboratively with parents and family resilience would serially mediate the relation between time spent in medical visits and perceived health, such that more time spent with the doctor would be associated with perception of collaborative decision making and, in turn, higher levels of resiliency and better overall health status from parents’ perspectives. Utilizing data from the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Health from 2020-2021, this study examined survey responses from 369 parents of children with a reported diabetes diagnosis. Responses were extracted from a larger survey for questions related to time spent with providers in prevention focused visits, collaborative decision-making, family resilience, and health status of the child. Bivariate correlations and serial mediation analyses, per Hayes (2013), were conducted, covarying age, sex, ethnicity of child, health insurance, family structure, income, and education level of parents. Bivariate analyses showed some variables were significantly related in hypothesized directions (p < .05). In serial mediation analyses (10,000 bootstrapped samples), the total effect of time spent with the doctor on overall health status was nonsignificant (t = 0.7767, p = 0.4383), and the direct effect was also nonsignificant when mediators (i.e., collaborative decision making, family resilience) were added (t = 0.805 CI= -0.0044, 0.0122), indicating no serial mediation. Controlling for the effects of the other mediator, a significant indirect effect was found through collaborative decision making (t= 1.9181 CI = 0.0015-0.0940) but not family resilience (t = 0.9565 CI=-0.0059-0.478). This study demonstrates that collaborative decision making with parents mediates the relationship between time spent in preventative health care visits and overall health status. Changes such as policies that incentivize quality of care rather than number of billable visits, or establishment of patient centered medical homes, could support appointments of sufficient length that would allow for collaboration and, in turn, better perceived health status for those affected by diabetes.

Energy recovery from anaerobic co-digestion with pig manure and spent mushroom compost in the Mekong Delta: Research article

Nguyen, Vo Chau Ngan, Fricke, Klaus 14 November 2012 (has links)
This study aimed at seeking for the solution to recover the energy from agriculture waste in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. The spent mushroom compost - a residue from the mushroom growing - was chosen for co-digestion with pig manure in anaerobic batch and semi-continuous experiments. The results showed that in case of spent mushroom compost made up 75% of the mixed substrate, the gained biogas volume was not significantly different compared to the treatment fed solely with 100% pig manure. The average produced biogas was 4.1 L×day-1 in the experimental conditions. The semi-continuous experiments remained in good operation up to the 90th day of the fermentation without any special agitating method application. The methane contents in both experiments were around 60%, which was significantly suitable for energy purposes. These results confirm that spent mushroom compost is possibly an acceptable material for energy recovery in the anaerobic fermentation process.
