Frihet i en bubbla : En kvalitativ studie av svenska journalisters upplevelser av arbetsförhållandena i bevakningen av OS i Peking 2008.Forssell, Karl, Geite, Sofia January 2009 (has links)
This study focuses on exploring Swedish journalists’ experiences and thoughts about the working conditions during the Olympic Games in Beijing 2008. It is interesting because of the fact that the Olympic Games where hosted in a country with dictatorial government and this is the foundation of this study. Theories about social construction, propaganda and media events were applied to illuminate and give a broader comprehension of the influence on the journalistic work during an Olympic Game. To explore this problem and get answers to our questions we used qualitative interviews with eight Swedish journalists who were stationed in Beijing. The result of this study is based on these journalists’ experiences of their reality. We found that all the journalists experienced an almost perfect working condition in many ways. Censorship and the lack of freedom of speech were debated a lot before the games in many western media. These subjects did not affect negative on the Swedish journalists work in Beijing but the debate had anyway an unavoidable influence on them. The line between sport journalism and a social journalism was often rubbed out and it seemed hard to avoid what happened outside the Olympic area. The organization of the Beijing Games is described by many journalists as the best of all times. We found that the journalists gave a common experience which says that almost everything in Beijing was controlled and set by the organization. The majority says at the same time that they were totally aware of the ongoing propaganda. The journalists in our study describe a journalistic freedom inside the Olympic area, in the same way as in every Olympic Game. No matter if it is hosted by a democratic or a dictatorial government.

A summer wildfire : how the greatest debut in baseball history peaked and dwindled over the course of three monthsReynolds, Colin Thomas 27 July 2011 (has links)
The narrative itself is an ageless one, a fundamental Shakespearean tragedy in its progression. A young man is deemed invaluable and exalted by the public. The hero is cast into the spotlight and bestowed with insurmountable expectations. But the acclamations and pressures are burdensome and the invented savior fails to fulfill the prospects once imagined by the public. He is cast aside, disregarded as a symbol of failure or one deserving of pity. It’s the quintessential tragedy of a fallen hero.
The protagonist of this report is Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg, who enjoyed a phenomenal rookie season before it ended abruptly due to a severe elbow injury. But from a broader perspective, this report considers the current state of baseball in American society. The immense anticipation of Strasburg’s debut in early June of 2010 was unprecedented and his success sparked the public’s interest. But the 21-year-old failed to seize our adoration and his injury left many disappointed and disengaged. During a time when the casual baseball fan was disinterested and even the devoted felt disenchanted, Strasburg provided a brief reprieve from the controversies and allegations. Americans could connect with their beleaguered National Pastime once more.
Although Strasburg is the driving force, his role as “savior” could have been bestowed upon anyone. Nothing about his personality or looks or charisma garnered him such high esteem, but just his uncanny ability to throw a baseball. On the surface he is just a young prodigy in a long line of highly touted successes and failures – and he certainly won’t be the last. In essence, the star alone does not compose the story, but rather it’s the ideology surrounding him.
Lastly, Strasburg’s narrative is still unfinished. As in any tragic tale comes the hope of redemption. This unknown conclusion is fitting for a baseball narrative where every year begins afresh and endless possibilities emerge. As essayist Alexander Pope once noted, “Hope springs eternal in the human breast.” The same is true in baseball. / text

Sportsidorna - a man's world? : En studie av Göteborgs-Postens sportsidor ur ett genusperspektiv. / The sport pages – a man's world? : A study of Göteborgs-Postens sport pages from a gender perspectiveHildén, Christian, Larsson, Johan January 2010 (has links)
This study examines from a gender perspective how the gender distribution is viewed in the content of Göteborgs-Posten's sports pages and the short and long term effects of the the newspaper's gender equality plan that was introduced in 2005. It is a quantitative study for two sample periods, 2005 and 2009, that investigates how many articles in the newspaper which is about women's sports and male sports. Michel Foucault's theory of discourse is central to the study, his view of identity in society and how these are represented fit well on gender issues in sports journalism. The results show that women's sport is greatly subordinate to man's sport in terms of number of articles. The gender equality plan has not had any noticeable effects on Göteborgs-Posten's sports pages. This is due to a variety of factors – economic aspects weigh heavily in this problem.

Title: “Are we live now?” - A study about the role of the sports journalist and the working conditions in the changing media landscape Author: Joakim Almén & Joacim Clarin Tutor: Lowe Hedman Purpose: The purpose of this thesis was to study how the working conditions for sports journalists in Sweden appear and whether there have been changes in relation to the changing media landscape, with the upcoming of new technologies and the emerging crisis within the media business. The key question to answer is how the sports journalist feel about their working situations? In which way have the movement towards the web and the newspaper crisis affected them? Method/Material: The material in this paper consists of seven interviews with prominent sports journalists, all with ten or more years experience in the business. The interviews were all based on theory regarding sports journalism and media convergence, and a former study by David Hesmondhalgh & Sarah Baker, regarding the working conditions in the "creative business" in Great Britain. Main Results: The main results shows that the sports journalists often have long working days, especially during big events such as the World Cup in football and the Olympic Games, with little time for rest. The journalists have also been assigned more tasks than before, which makes their work very hectic. The journalists feel an uncertainty, in various degrees, regarding their job and the crisis within the business, with economic cuts and the increasing competition. The movement towards the web has made their work more stressful in regards to needs to write and publish faster, which in turn has created a concern for poor quality in what they create. The upcoming of social media works in two ways, either as a journalistic tool or a way in wich the public can share their critizism or abuse the journalists.

Laget före jaget - de stora sporternas dominans hos TT : En kvantitativ innehållsanalys av innehållet i TT Nyhetsbyråns sportmaterial / There is no I in team – the dominance of major sports in TT’s reportingHögberg, Viktor, Larsson, Jimmie January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to show which content that is most common in the Swedish News Agency TT Nyhetsbyrån’s sports coverage. It also shows if the coverage is concentrated to for example any special sports, clubs, people or topics. This study uses a quantitative content analysis and the result is based on texts from 28 systematically selected days during one year. In total, the study includes 906 texts. The result of this study shows that the sports content of TT Nyhetsbyrån’s news feed is mainly concentrated to two sports, football/soccer and ice hockey. Several studies of other Sports Media show the same result as this study in terms of news content. One of the conclusions is that the sports coverage is focused on athletes and teams at a professional level. Only a few sports, almost entirely practiced by men, is represented in the reporting. There are also other attributes that seem important for the news coverage. One of the most common attributes is that a big part of the news texts includes Swedish Athletes. Another important attribute is that the news can be related to a country that is close to Sweden in culture.

"Hamrén-haveriet" : En kvantitativ studie om personifiering av svenska förbundskaptener i kvällstidningarnaBerntsson, Jonathan, Larsson, Simon January 2014 (has links)
Total amount of words: 15 269. In this essay, the purpose is to examine the personalization of Swedish national coaches during international championships in the Swedish tabloids. Research shows that a leader nowadays is representative for her organization. Therefore it could be assumed that the way the national coach is portrayed can have some kind of effect on the public opinion about the team as a unit and their sport federation in total. This essay is a quantitative study of the sport tabloids Sportbladet och SPORT-Expressen during three international championships: Euro 2012 in football, WC 2013 in ice hockey and Euro 2014 in handball. We have studied the coverage of the national coaches Erik Hamrén, Pär Mårts and Ola Lindgren/Staffan Olsson in contrast to the coverage of their teams in total. The main results are that the national coaches are mentioned in every second article that is written about the national teams during the championships. They are mainly portrayed in a neutral way, even though the coverage of them is affected by the results in the matches. In the absolute majority of the articles, the national coaches are described without any personal attributes.
