DeExcelerator: A Framework for Extracting Relational Data From Partially Structured Documents

Eberius, Julian, Werner, Christopher, Thiele, Maik, Braunschweig, Katrin, Dannecker, Lars, Lehner, Wolfgang 09 June 2021 (has links)
Of the structured data published on the web, for instance as datasets on Open Data Platforms such as data.gov, but also in the form of HTML tables on the general web, only a small part is in a relational form. Instead the data is intermingled with formatting, layout and textual metadata, i.e., it is contained in partially structured documents. This makes transformation into a true relational form necessary, which is a precondition for most forms of data analysis and data integration. Studying data.gov as an example source for partially structured documents, we present a classification of typical normalization problems. We then present the DeExcelerator, which is a framework for extracting relations from partially structured documents such as spreadsheets and HTML tables.

To this end, a teaching experiment was designed which involved students in the construction of their own formulas, using spreadsheets, for calculating interests and future values of investments, under regimes of both simple and compound rates. The constructionist conceptions of Papert provided a theoretical base for the development of the activities. The methodology adopted for the study was modelled according to the design-based research methodologies. Two phases of experimentation were elaborated. The first phase involves students initiating their studies in Financial Mathematics in working on a set of activities with spreadsheets, and then completing a series of paper and pencil tasks. In the second phase, to provide a basis for comparing the approach adopted with the more usual practice of giving students previously defined formulae for calculating interest, the paper and pencil task were also administered to a group of students who has previously studied Financial Mathematics. The analysis of data followed the cycle of description-execution-reflectiondebugging- description described by Valente. According to these analyses, the formulae constructed by the students and implemented on the computer served as computational models providing feedback and enabling simulations of various possible situations. This in turn allowed students to engage in a cycle of expression, evaluation and reflection of the mathematical domain in question / O objetivo deste trabalho é colaborar na investigação do impacto da abordagem construcionista e das potencialidades das planilhas eletrônicas no ensino-aprendizagem de conteúdos da Matemática Financeira. A metodologia empregada neste trabalho está baseada no design-based research methodologies .

Pattern-based data and application integration in service oriented architectures

Kongdenfha, Woralak, Computer Science & Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, UNSW January 2009 (has links)
The success of Web services comes from the benefits that it brings in reducing the cost and the time needed to develop data and applications by reusing them, and simplifying their integrations through standardization. However, standardization in Web services does not remove the need for adapters due to possible heterogeneity among service interface and protocol definitions. Moreover, the current service APIs are targeted toward professional programmers, but not accessible to a wider class of users without programming expertise, but would never the less like to build their own integrated applications. In this dissertation, we propose methods and tools to support both service developers and non-expert users in their data and application integration tasks. To support service developers, we propose a framework that enables rapid development of Web service adapters. We investigate particularly the problem of service adaptation focusing on business interface and protocol layers. Our study shows that many differences between business interfaces and protocols are recurring. We introduce mismatch patterns to capture these recurring differences and provide solutions to resolve them. We present the notion of adaptation aspects, which is based on the aspect-oriented programming paradigm, to enable rapid development and deployment of service adapters. We also present a comparative study between standalone and aspect-oriented adapters development. The study shows that the aspect-oriented approach is preferable in many cases, especially when adapters need to access internal states of services. The proposed approach is implemented in a prototype tool, which is used to illustrate how it simplifies adapters development through a case study. To support users without programming expertise, we propose a spreadsheet-based Web mashups development framework, which enables users to develop mashups in the popular spreadsheet environment. First, we provide a mechanism that makes structured data first class values of spreadsheet cells. Second, we propose a new component model that can be used to develop fairly sophisticated mashups, involving joining data sources and keeping spreadsheet data up to date. Third, to simplify mashup development, we provide a collection of spreadsheet-based mashup patterns that captures common Web data access and spreadsheet presentation functionalities. Users can reuse and customize these patterns to build spreadsheet-based Web mashups instead of developing them from scratch. Fourth, we enable users to manipulate structured data presented on spreadsheet in a drag-and-drop fashion. Finally, we have developed and tested a prototype tool to demonstrate the utility of the proposed framework.

Matemática financeira para o Ensino Médio

Pires, Sandra January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this work is to associate the study of financial mathematics to the mathematical content that lies behind it such as functions and numerical sequences, in particular the geometric progressions, stressing that the relationship of these articulated content with real-world situations greatly contributes to turn financial mathematics in an element of motivation for the teaching of mathematics, and that this motivation can be developed throughout high school. Our proposal is to approach the subject both in a conceptual and practical way, taking into account the basic principles of financial mathematics: factors of correction and flow of amounts over time. We have used methods of algebraic calculation in resolutions of financial problems especially the logarithms and the iterative method. We also use technological tools such as spreadsheets and the HP 12C Financial Calculator, emphasizing the possibility of working with various resolution methods so that the use of one justifies and confirms the need for knowledge of the other. The articulation of mathematical content, the context of the subject and the use of technological resources in teaching financial mathematics are factors of great importance in the mathematics education. It is hoped that this work can be useful to teachers interested in developing the topic with their students. We believe that the learning of financial mathematics should not be treated without proper conceptualization and contextualization or put aside, because the student who has financial expertise may be, in the future, a more cautious consumer and a citizen with a more stable financial life.

This research addresses the pre-service mathematics teacher education, in particular their practice with computer. Considering the problems concerning teacher education courses - as, for instance, the disarticulation between the theory and the practice, and between the university education and the school reality - it was formulated the following research question: What are the perspectives, expectations and difficulties that the future teachers experience when they reflect on an educational practice using spreadsheets at the basic school? The research was developed in collaboration with two future mathematics teachers from UNESP at Rio Claro, São Paulo, Brazil. It was organized three planning meetings, ten intervention meetings in a public school, and ten reflection meeting, that always took place right after each intervention meeting. The reflection meetings were videoed and transcribed. The data were analyzed with reference to the literature. Themes were identified that could be referred to their expectation, perspectives, and difficulties. These themes included: the teaching in the classroom and the transposition of the contents; the complexity of the classroom environment; the interaction with the students; the school working conditions; being a teacher; and the use of computers.
