Tapering and Peaking Maximal Strength for Powerlifting Performance: A Review

Travis, S K., Mujika, Iñigo, Gentles, Jeremy A., Stone, Michael H., Bazyler, Caleb D. 09 September 2020 (has links)
Prior to major competitions, athletes often use a peaking protocol such as tapering or training cessation to improve performance. The majority of the current literature has focused on endurance-based sports such as swimming, cycling, and running to better understand how and when to taper or use training cessation to achieve the desired performance outcome. However, evidence regarding peaking protocols for strength and power athletes is lacking. Current limitations for peaking maximal strength is that many studies do not provide sufficient details for practitioners to use. Thus, when working with athletes such as powerlifters, weightlifters, throwers, and strongman competitors, practitioners must use trial and error to determine the best means for peaking rather than using an evidence-based protocol. More specifically, determining how to peak maximal strength using data derived from strength and power athletes has not been established. While powerlifting training (i.e., back squat, bench press, deadlift) is used by strength and power athletes up until the final days prior to a competition, understanding how to peak maximal strength relative to powerlifting performance is still unclear. Thus, the purpose of this study was to review the literature on tapering and training cessation practices relative to peaking powerlifting performance.

Validation of Inertial Sensor to Measure Barbell Kinematics across a Spectrum of Loading Conditions

Abbott, John C., Wagle, John P., Sato, Kimitake, Painter, Keith, Light, Thaddeus J., Stone, Michael H. 29 June 2020 (has links)
The aim of this study was to evaluate the level of agreement in measuring back squat kinematics between an inertial measurement unit (IMU) and a 3D motion capture system (3DMOCAP). Kinematic variables included concentric peak velocity (CPV), concentric mean velocity (CMV), eccentric peak velocity (EPV), eccentric mean velocity (EMV), mean propulsive velocity (MPV), and POP-100: a proprietary variable. Sixteen resistance-trained males performed an incrementally loaded one repetition maximum (1RM) squat protocol. A series of Pearson correlations, 2 × 4 RM ANOVA, Cohen's effect size differences, coefficient of variation (CV), and standard error of the estimate (SEE) were calculated. A large relationship existed for all variables between devices ( 0.78-0.95). Between-device agreement for CPV worsened beyond 60% 1RM. The remaining variables were in agreement between devices with trivial effect size differences and similar CV magnitudes. These results support the use of the IMU, regardless of relative intensity, when measuring EMV, EPV, MPV, and POP-100. However, practitioners should carefully select kinematic variables of interest when using the present IMU device for velocity-based training (VBT), as certain measurements (e.g., CMV, CPV) do not possess practically acceptable reliability or accuracy. Finally, the IMU device exhibited considerable practical data collection concerns, as one participant was completely excluded and 13% of the remaining attempts displayed obvious internal error.

Modified Coulomb Approach For Squat Silos

South, Mitchell Cade 16 April 2024 (has links) (PDF)
Traditional methods for calculating lateral pressures in silos, such as Janssen's Method and Coulomb's Method, have limitations due to the underlying assumptions of each methodology. This research investigates an approach which adapts Coulomb's Method to account for the cylindrical geometry of silos. The Silo Wedge Method (SWM) distinguishes between two cases based on the aspect ratio (height/diameter) of the silo. Comparative analysis reveals that the SWM accurately matches Coulomb's Method for linear retaining walls when the silo aspect ratio approaches zero. As the aspect ratio increases above 0.25, the SWM exhibits behavior similar to Janssen's Method. This suggests a potential connection between these two classical methods across different silo geometries. The SWM consistently predicts lower lateral pressures when compared to established methods, primarily due to volumetric differences between the silo failure wedge and linear failure wedge assumptions. Key factors influencing these lower predictions, including potential earth pressure states, lateral pressure coefficients, and silo wall deformations, are suggested for further investigation. If validated through physical testing and advanced numerical modeling, the SWM could enable more accurate lateral pressure predictions, leading to material savings, cost reductions, and a lower carbon footprint in silo design and construction, while maintaining structural safety. This research contributes to a comprehensive understanding of lateral pressure calculations across different silo geometries and retaining structures.

Annerstedt, Måns, Apoy, Axel January 2015 (has links)
This study concerns the speed loss and thereby the increased energy consumption which affects ships in shallow water. The aim of the study was to gain knowledge of how much shorter a shallow passage is required to be in order to be the better alternative compared to a long and deep route with regard to fuel and time consumption. The result was that it is not possible to draw any definitive conclusions which are applicable to all ship types, however, there are clear patterns. Moreover, the goal of the study was to aid mariners facing a choice between a long and deep route and a short and shallow route, this was done by creating a compilation of the results for speed loss in open water. Due to the results for confined waters being the same for all the ships in the study, no compilation was done for confined waters as it was deemed excessive. The aim of the study was achieved by quantitative research in the form of mathematical models to calculate speed loss, fuel consumption and time consumption for a number of fictitious ships.

ÄR EXCENTRISK TRÄNING EN EFFEKTIV METOD FÖR ATT UTVECKLA HOPPHÖJD, MUSKELSTYRKA ELLER EFFEKTUTVECKLING FÖR TRÄNADE OCH SKADEFRIA INDIVIDER? : En översiktsartikel / IS ECCENTRIC TRAINING AN EFFICIENT METHOD TO ENHANCE JUMP HEIGHT, MUSCLE STRENGTH OR POWER IN TRAINED AND NON-INJURED INDIVIDUALS? : A review

Hedman, Victor January 2018 (has links)
In this review 17 randomized control studies were reviewed that had examined the effects of eccentric training regarding jump height, strength and power for trained and non-injured individuals. The purpose of the review was to answer the following two questions at issue; 1) “Is eccentric training an efficient method to enhance jump height, strength or power for trained and non-injured individuals?” 2) “If so, how should that training regime be designed?”. Most of the included studies could not distinguish any significant changes because of eccentric training. Only six out of 17 studies could show acute as well as short term significant improvements in jump height, strength and power. The relevance of these findings is questioned since effect size has not been reported in all the included studies. The variety between the different interventions in each study also makes it difficult to compare the results between one study and another. In conclusion, the reviewed studies failed to show that eccentric training is an effective method to enhance jump height, strength and power for trained and non-injured individuals.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is characterized by chronic persistent airflow obstruction. Studies evaluating the use of whole body vibration (WBV) in patients with COPD have shown improvement in clinical-functional parameters, however, knowledge about the acute effect of WBV in COPD is still scarce. The objective of this study was to characterize the intensity (static or dynamic) during an exercise session, as well as to evaluate the acute effect of exercise on cardiorespiratory and inflammatory responses in COPD. The study volunteers were matched for gender, age, BMI and were divided into 2 groups: control group (GC, n = 13), composed of subjects without COPD and COPD group (COPD, n = 13). Familiarization with WBV exercise and the application of the 6-minute Walk Test were performed in one day, after 1 week, the characterization of the WBV exercise was performed in 4 days with a 48-hour interval between sessions. Static squatting was performed at frequencies 30, 35 and 40 Hz and dynamic squatting at 35 Hz frequency. Both groups underwent the same experimental conditions. Cardiorespiratory parameters were measured during all exercise days and inflammatory parameters were evaluated during static exercise at the 35 Hz frequency through the plasma concentration of adiponectin, resistin, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, BDNF and soluble TNF receptors (STNFR-1 and STNFR-2). The results showed that static squatting promoted greater variation (39.2%) in HR when compared to dynamic. The analysis of 3 frequencies of WBV showed similar results between the groups with significant increases in VO2 (GC: 27.4 to 40% and COPD: 21.5 to 28.5%) and HR (CG: 10.2 a 12.5% e COPD: 4.3 a 12.7%). Baseline concentrations of adipokines and IL-8 showed higher values, in the other hand low IL-10 values were found in the COPD group. After WBV, an increase in IL-10 concentrations (40.6%) was observed in the COPD group reaching values similar to basal GC concentration. In conclusion, the present study provides subsidies for the elaboration of training protocols with WBV, since exercise was characterized as low intensity (<2 METs) in the frequencies evaluated, being applicable and safe in COPD. In addition, VCI appears to modulate IL-10 concentrations in the COPD population evaluated.

Efeitos agudos e crônicos da combinação dos treinamentos de força e vibração sobre o desempenho neuromuscular e a excitabilidade das vias reflexas / Acute and chronic effects of combined strength and vibration training on neuromuscular performance and excitability of spinal pathways reflexes

Batista, Mauro Alexandre Benites 16 April 2010 (has links)
It has been suggested that the combination of strength and vibration training may be advantageous when compared with strength training alone. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess the effects of combined strength training and vibration (ST+V) on lower limb hypertrophy and on maximal dynamic strength (MDS) and vertical jump (VJ) performances. In addition, we investigate if the training-induced adaptations were in agreement to acute and chronic changes on spinal reflex excitability. METHODS: Two experiments were performed. In the first experiment, the effects of a single training session on VJ performance and spinal reflexes excitability were assessed. Twelve young male undertook four experimental conditions. On ST condition, subjects performed five sets with 10 repetitions on squat exercise with load of 90% body mass. On both ST+V30 and ST+V50 conditions, subjects performed the ST on a vibration platform at 30 Hz (2-4 mm) and 50 Hz (4-6 mm), respectively. In C condition, subjects were only assessed. Vertical jumping performance and Hoffman (at 20% of maximal M wave, H20%) and maximal tendon soleus reflexes (Tmáx) were measured before and after all experimental conditions. In the second experiment, twenty nine young male were randomized into three groups. All groups performed 3-5 sets with 6-12 RM on squat exercise, twice a week, for ten weeks. The ST+V30 and ST+V50 groups performed the squat exercise on the vibration platform at 30 Hz (2-4 mm) and 50 Hz (4-6 mm), respectively. Quadriceps cross sectional area (QCSA), MDS and VJ performances, maximal soleus H- and T- reflexes and maximal M wave (Mmáx) were assessed before and after the 10-week training period. RESULTS: in the first experiment, no significant changes were found in H20% amplitude in any experimental condition (p>0,05). Significant decrease on Tmáx amplitude was found after ST+V30 (-7.4%) and ST+V50 (-11.1%) conditions, after the first minute, compared to before intervention assessment. VJ decreased in all experimental conditions (C= -11.8%, ST= -6.6%, ST+V30= -7.7% and ST+V50= -7.4%) (p<0.001). There were no significant changes between groups in any variable measured (p>0.05). In the second experiment, significant increases were found in QCSA (ST= 9.8%, ST+V30= 11.7%, ST+V50= 12.9%); MDS (ST= 16.9%, ST+V30= 15.2%, ST+V50= 16.6%) and VJ height (ST= 6.0%, ST+V30= 7.2%, ST+V50= 6.0%) in all groups (p<0.05). There were no significant changes between groups in any variable measured (p>0.05). The training period did not induce significant changes in Hmáx/ Mmáx (ST = +28%, ST+V30 = -16,3%, ST+V50 = -14%) and Tmáx/ Mmáx ratios (ST = -30,3%, ST+V30 = -38,2%, ST+V50 = -28,1%) (p>0.05). However it was found a significant time effect for Tmáx/ Mmáx ratio (-48.9%) (p<0,05).CONCLUSION: A single strength training session induces a brief impairment on muscle spindle activity. This impairment is not greater if ST is combined with vibration. Performing ST on a vibration platform did not additionally increase QCSA, MDS and VJ performance compared with ST alone

Morales, Anete Beling January 2015 (has links)
INTRODUCTION: The assessment of the hip is still considered complex and challenging. Recent advances in surgical and imaging techniques have contributed to the identification of structures that contribute to hip pain. Measures that are valid, reliable, reproducible and repeatable are necessary to identify changes that have occurred at the hip joint over time, and to evaluate the treatment outcomes. Both at the clinical and research settings, a systematic evaluation process is crucial to provide an evidence-based practice. However, there are few studies in the literature that evaluated the reliability of muscle strength, range of motion (ROM) and hip function measurements in healthy subjects, fundamental steps to assess the effects of clinical interventions in the treatment of patients with problems in the hip joint and compare with normative values. PURPOSE: To evaluate the reliability of an assessment protocol of muscle strength, ROM and hip functionality in healthy subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 15 healthy volunteers (30 hips), of both sexes, between 22 and 37 years of age, were submitted to the test and retest, with a single investigator, of muscle strength, ROM and hip functionality. Four test sessions were held at the Neuromuscular Plasticity Department of the Exercise Research Laboratory at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. The hip assessment included: (1) anthropometric measurements, (2) patient-reported outcome measures, (3) single leg squat test, (4) photogrammetric and goniometric hip ROM examination, (5) maximum strength test with handheld and isokinetic dynamometers, (6) pain evaluation by intensity rating scale. RESULTS: the handheld dynamometer showed excellent reliability with intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) > 0.9 (with confidence intervals (CIs) between 0.85 and 0.99) and relative standard error values (% SEM) of less than 10%. The external rotators tests at 0°, 10° and 20° of internal rotation; internal rotators at 15° of external rotation, and hip abductors on an isokinetic dynamometer, and active and passive external rotation and bilateral passive internal rotation taken by photogrammetric analysis of the hip also showed excellent reliability, with ICCs> 0.75, and acceptable SEM and SEM% values. However, in many tests performed on the isokinetic dynamometer and in ROM assessment, the reliability remained between fair and good (ICCs between 0.48 to 0.75 overall), with very large CIs, especially for the assessment of ROM. At the isokinetic dynamometer, testing of the external rotators was more reliable than the internal rotators; and the strength rotators tests at the extremes ROMs the reliability was lower. The kappa interpretation for the single leg squat test was satisfactory (k = 0.59). The worst reliability tests were photogrammetry of active hip abduction (ICC = 0.39), passive hip abduction (ICC = 0.48) and active ROM of the hip flexors performed with a goniometer (ICC = 0.51). CONCLUSION: A good part of the tests showed excellent reliability and justifies the application at the clinical setting, when performed by a single investigator. However, improvements are needed in some of the used techniques to improve the reliability and reduce measurement errors in the assessment of the hip.
