Global Reporting Initiative-rapportering i två branscher : En komparativ studie om Global Reporting Initiative-rapportering / Global Reporting Initiative-reporting in two industries : A comparative study on Global Reporting Initiative-reporting

Lindström, Konrad, Engdahl, Pontus January 2021 (has links)
Sustainability reporting today is an important tool for companies to show how they work with sustainable development. The design of the companies' sustainability reports can vary since the regulations can be seen as somewhat vague. GRI provides a framework and standards that create a common language for organizations and its reporting of current economic, environmental, and social aspects. However, GRI is voluntary to follow which creates a possibility for both similarities and differences in companies' sustainability reporting. The study was conducted with a qualitative research strategy and a comparative design. The purpose of this study is to investigate the sustainability work of selected companies based on sustainability reporting according to GRI based on stakeholder theory, legitimacy theory and institutional theory. The aim of the study is to compare companies active in the trade and real estate industry to distinguish any similarities and differences. To shed light on the purpose of the study, an analysis of the companies' sustainability reports of four selected years has been carried out, as well as an interview from one of the real estate companies. A comparison has then been made between the companies to point out potential similarities or differences. The analysis of the empirical material indicates that there are some similarities and differences between the surveyed industries' reporting of GRI standards. The main differences are found in the social part of GRI reporting, while the financial and environmental reporting appears to be equally similar. Development over time of GRI reporting also differs between industries. These similarities and differences have been analyzed with the use of stakeholder theory, legitimacy theory and institutional theory.

Avslöjande information om korruption och penningtvätt i de fyra svenska storbankernas hållbarhetsredovisningar : En kvalitativ innehållsanalys av de fyra svenska storbankernas hållbarhetsredovisningar för åren 2017 till 2020 / Revealing information about corruption and money laundering in the four major Swedish banks’ sustainability reports

Sandqvist, Elin, Kozlik, Roxana January 2021 (has links)
Background and problem: Between the years 2015-2020, the banks Nordea, Svenska Handelsbanken, SEB and Swedbank have on most occasions been notified of penalty fees for shortcomings in the work against corruption and money laundering. Money laundering is a part of corruption and is described by most researchers as a global problem where banks play a major role when it comes to hiding illegal money. Banks that have previously been involved in scandals tend to have a lack of trust among stakeholders, which among other things, has a negative effect on banks’ legitimacy.  Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to report on Nordea´s, Svenska Handelsbanken´s, SEB´s and Swedbank´s corruption and money laundering disclosure, based on the indicators in GRI 205: Anti-corruption, in their sustainability reports. The study aims to analyze the content of the sustainability reports of the four banks in order to draw conclusions about possible similarities and differences regarding the banks’ corruption and money laundering disclosure.  Method: In order to answer the study's research question, a qualitative content analysis has been applied. The qualitative content analysis has formed the basis for the analysis of the four major Swedish banks´sustainability reports for the years 2017 to 2020.  Findings: The results of the study shows that all banks reveal most information about business activities regarding the risk of corruption as well as communication and education about policies and procedures against corruption. This study also ensures that it reveals the least information regarding measures taken due to corruption incidents. However, Svenska Handelsbanken excels in this as they reveal incidents of corruption and money laundering that they have been involved in, which the remaining banks do not. This at the same time as Svenska Handelsbanken is the bank that has been least involved in corruption scandals in recent years, in comparison with Nordea, SEB and Swedbank. The study also showed that all banks only report on a few selected parts within each indicator. Banks only disclose information that affects or receives all points within GRI 205: Anti-Corruption.

Sustainability assurance : A qualitative study exploring the assurance process, team and report of sustainability assurance

Al-Halwachi, Jafar, Eklind, Maria January 2020 (has links)
Sustainability assurance is on the uprising. Nowadays, more and more companies are thinking about sustainability which resulted in a growing market for sustainability assurance. The global reporting initiative (2013, p.6) defines sustainability assurance as “the use of external, independent reviews of sustainability management processes and final disclosures is intended to increase the robustness, accuracy and trustworthiness of disclosed information.”. Unlike financial auditing, sustainability assurance ismostly unregulated and there are various guidelines and frameworks issued to help the assurance provider. The lack of mandatory regulations has resulted in a fragmented assurance environment where different approaches is used by different assurance providers. This in turn has contributed to the sustainability assurance process being unknown. The uncertainty around sustainability assurance affect the usersof the assurance report, for example stakeholders’, which can find it difficult to identify, interpretand compare the results of the sustainability assurance. The purpose of this study is to contribute to the limited knowledge on sustainability assurance, by investigating the sustainability assurance from both auditors’ and non-auditors’ perspectives. To assist in fulfilling the purpose, four main themes were developed; assurance team, assurance process, assurance report and the future of sustainability assurance. To fulfill the purpose of this study, the research questions are;“What is the audit process of sustainability reports?”“What does the sustainability assurance team look like?”“What does the sustainability assurance report look like?”The result in this study suggests that the process of sustainability assurance looks different depending on the assurance provider. The findings also suggest that the assurance team almost looks the same, regardless who is the assurance provider. When it comes to the results regarding the assurance report, it is evident that there are many ways to improve theusefulness and informativeness of the report. Furthermore, the findings of this study contribute to the limited knowledge of sustainability assurance by thoroughly exploring the assurance process.

Does stakeholder pressure have an effect on the quality of the sustainability report?

Westergren, Eric, Hasselgren, Linn January 2020 (has links)
Our planet suffers from severe climate change and environmental issues has never been as important as it is now. Countries and communities come together to get involved in environmental questions and to work against a sustainable future. Companies are also expected to take act on this concern and incorporate sustainability into their business practices. To account for this, company’s disclosure a sustainability report and the numbers of companies that do so has increased rapidly the last years. From 2011 to 2013 there was almost a 50% increase of submitted sustainability reports. Since then, sustainability reporting has gone from optional to mandatory as a new law came into place in 2016. However, as companies start to disclosure sustainability reports more than ever before, new issues have arisen. The lack of regulation means that there is no guarantee for quality in the report and studies has shown that the stakeholders demand higher quality and more transparency of the sustainability report. Thus, it could be of importance for companies to produce reports of better quality in order to meet the demands of their stakeholders. Retaining a good relationship is crucial and it affects the growth of the company as it affects competitive advantage and the possibility to manage risks. Previous literature has found evidence that stakeholder pressure has influence on the transparency, which has similarities to quality, of the sustainability reports globally. With this thesis we aim to contribute with additional information to existing literature with a new geographical area, Sweden. We also aim to contribute to understanding of how quality of the sustainability reports can be determined. The critical assessment of the sustainability reports from each stakeholder becomes more important and previous literature has shown that different stakeholders have different effect on transparency in the sustainability reports. First and foremost, the purpose of this thesis is to investigate if the pressure from different stakeholder groups has an effect on the quality of the sustainability report. We intend to do so with the following research question: Does stakeholder pressure have an effect on the quality of sustainability reports? The companies will be split into four different groups based on the industry the company operates within and the sub-purpose is to see if there is any difference in the impact on the quality of the sustainability reports between the different groups. The quality will be determined by adherence level to the GRI G4 framework, how many other standards and guidelines the report is in compliance with and the existence of external assurance. The population is the 127 companies who has their reports available in the GRI database. We have conducted a quantitative study using a linear regression analysis on those 127 companies. The results led us to the conclusion that the relationship between stakeholder pressure and the quality of the sustainability reports cannot be explained by the model used in this thesis. A two-sample t test was conducted for each group of industry to see if there was any difference of the mean of quality if the companies was represented in the industry or not. The results showed us that the mean of the quality was higher for the companies operating in an environmentally sensitive industry.

Hållbarhetsredovisning i bankbranschen : En kvalitativ studie över hur banker kommunicerar sitt hållbarhetsarbete / Sustainability report in the banking industry : A qualitative study of how banks communicate on their sustainability work

Truong, Alex, Dost, Walid January 2019 (has links)
Sustainability reporting is an instrument that has two basic functions: an instrument for increased transparency and one for controlling sustainability processes. The transparency perspective includes how the company can present its sustainability work through its sustainability report so that it becomes more visible to its stakeholders. The governance perspective is about how companies can control, measure and target the sustainability issues that are considered important through sustainability reporting. At present, it is mainly large companies that choose to make sustainability reports. Research shows that companies in environmentally sensitive industries place greater emphasis on sustainability reporting than companies in less environmentally sensitive industries. In autumn 2016, a legislative amendment was introduced in the Annual Accounts Act, which means that all major Swedish companies are obliged to report on sustainability. As the banks are a powerful player in the struggle for sustainable development, we want to investigate how the legal requirement has affected the banks 'sustainability report and even if the banks' sustainability report is developing into a standard for the industry. The purpose of the thesis is to investigate the occurrence of changes in how companies in the Swedish banking industry report their sustainability work after the introduction of the new Accounting law. Furthermore, we want to investigate earlier times of similarities between the banks' sustainability reporting and whether it is moving towards a normative direction for the industry. Our study will help with existing research in the area of sustainability reporting. In order to answer our purpose, we have chosen a qualitative research strategy with a deductive research approach. Our research is based on existing theories in the area and the purpose is to investigate whether we can find evidence for these theories in our research. Analyzes show that there has been a clear change in how the banks communicate the various keywords and the context within it or the words. For all banks, there has been a significant increase in words linked to the context management perspective and values and principles. In addition, the proportion of words linked to the context of future plans has decreased significantly. Another conclusion we have been able to draw is that the new legal requirement also contributes to increase Affordability of the Sustainability Report between companies within the same industry. This can be explained by companies in the same industry often have the same challenges, risks and key performance indicators.

How can stakeholders pressure firms to create value through innovation and CSR? : A study on CSR-driven innovations in the clothing industry.

Higgs, Hariz Imran, Kocik, Anna Maria January 2020 (has links)
As the clothing industry is influenced by fierce competition and fast changing trends, firms must handle high stakeholder pressure such as for example, increased environmental and social awareness. According to the UN (2019), the clothing industry is the second biggest polluter to the environment, thus demonstrating the urgent need for CSR initiatives to make significant impact in this industry. In fact, many firms have been innovative, but the benefits from these innovations have yet to be seen.  The main purpose of this study is to understand how innovation and CSR can be combined to offer value for stakeholdersin the clothing industry and evaluate this through the relationship of the Porter hypothesis, stakeholder theory and value co-creation. This thesis adopts a mixed-method approach by responses from interviews and from a self-completing questionnaire. This is supported by the analysis of secondary data reports from firms in the clothing industry and governmental institutions. The results of this study conclude that firms experience two forms of stakeholder pressure which forces them to innovate, supporting the argument for the ‘strong’ form of the Porter hypothesis. Furthermore, it finds that value creation is inextricably linked to stakeholder theory.

Hållbarhetsstyrning : En kvalitativ studie av styrpaket i stora företag / Sustainability management : A qualitative study of management control systems package in large firms

Forsström, Alex, Karlsson, Fredrik January 2022 (has links)
The increased concern about various environmental and societal risks incombination with corporate scandals has resulted in an increased interest incorporate social responsibility. Corporate social responsibility has become anew necessity for companies, where companies are expected to managesustainability. Sustainability management requires companies to manage andcreate a balance between economic, ecological, and social goals. Managementcontrol systems (MCS) refers to different controls in managing organizationalgoals. A MCS should manage economic, ecological, and social goals in order tosteer towards sustainability. Previous studies, however, highlight that traditionalMCSs are driven by an economic self-interest with a potential impact onsociety’s well-being. In addition, the ecological and social dimension ofsustainability tends to be underrepresented. The purpose of this study is to identify how large companies with a sustainabilityand stakeholder perspective steer their operations towards sustainability. Malmiand Brown's (2008) MCS framework and previous research in the field of MCSare applied to generate an understanding of how large companies integrate astakeholder- and sustainability perspective in the MCS package, as well as whichcontrol mechanisms companies apply when managing the three dimensions ofsustainability. To achieve the purpose, a qualitative design with a documentstudy has been used. The document study consists of eleven large companies'annual and sustainability reports and were analysed with a qualitative contentanalysis. The results of the study indicate that large companies manage theireconomic, ecological, and social impact with a MCS package based on the needsof society and stakeholders. This demonstrates that ecological and social issuescan be integrated and managed with companies' MCS packages. The resultfurther indicates an application of all five controls in Malmi and Brown's (2008)MCS framework when steering towards sustainability. The main contributionof the study is an expanded knowledge about the framework's configuration insustainability management, where the notion of performance includes a broaderset of stakeholders.

Sustainability Performance Relation to Financial Performance : A quantitative study of companies in the textile industry within the European and North American markets

Malmström, Cajsa, Ekström, Lovis January 2022 (has links)
Background: Light has been shed on the textile industry as one of the leading industries when it comes to economic growth, global warming and sustainable development. The increasing demand for sustainable activities from stakeholders has led to the importance of measuring the sustainable development of companies. ESG reporting is a common tool used to indicate a company’s sustainability performance. Prior research has tended to focus on cross-sectional industries, and therefore a gap was identified for industry specific research.   Purpose: The purpose of this research is to explain the relationship between sustainability performance and financial performance in the textile industry in the European and North American markets to see if companies that invest in sustainability activities benefit financially.   Method: This research has followed a positivistic paradigm, with deductive reasoning and a quantitative approach. A probability sampling approach was performed by conducting secondary data from Thomson Reuters DataStream of companies in the textile industry in Europe and North America. This resulted in a final sample of ESG scores and ROIC of 44 companies. The data was later analysed in the SPSS software program by following the estimation method Ordinary Least Squares (OLS).    Findings: The literature review developed two hypotheses to address the research purpose and questions. The two hypotheses were analysed through two regression analyses that were satisfied through the OLS estimation method. The result showed that there was a significant relationship between the aggregated ESG score and ROIC which supported the first hypothesis. The second hypothesis of the multiple regression model showed that each component of ESG is correlated to ROIC, however, the environmental factor was not statistically significantly related.    Conclusion: The thesis showed that there is a positive relationship between ESG performance and ROIC in this study. This implies that companies that invest in sustainable development increase their financial performance. The aggregated ESG score as well as the social factor and the governance factor had the highest impact on ROIC, which is supported by the stakeholder theory as there has been an increasing demand on social and governance activities in the textile industry. This further supports that sustainability performance impact on financial performance is industry specific.

A critical Analysis of ESG Investments during the Covid-19 Pandemic

Motschmann, Laura January 2022 (has links)
This study deals with the critical analysis of sustainable investments and, therefore, ESG practices on financial performance during the year 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic hit the financial market. The analysis examines sustainable investments in terms of their actual sustainability, risk, and earnings potential. For an improved tangibility of the findings, the overall market of the developed countries is represented by the two sample indices MSCI World and its sustainable benchmark MSCI World SRI. The analysis focuses on performance, volatility, and gross returns. Additionally, the knowledge of three financial experts supplements the analysis and connects the findings with their professional experience. The interview questions focused on the transparency and traceability of a sustainable investment product, the movement from shareholder-value to the stakeholder approach, the risk of sustainable investments, and the return analysis. The analysis shows that the Covid-19 pandemic has influenced the behavior of investors through the increasing importance of social and environmental topics. The analysis determines that intransparency and greenwashing of sustainable investments pose a danger to investors and are favored by a lack of legal framework conditions. Furthermore, the results reveal that ESG engagement reduces the agency problem and can be considered a stakeholder issue. An examination of market data shows that sustainable investments have a lower extreme risk and are thus subject to lower fluctuations in value during the year of the pandemic. In addition, sustainable investments show an abovemarket average development of value growth and gross returns. The conclusion is that sustainable investments are still in the development stage and need quickly binding legal regulations. Nevertheless, the lower risk, the above-market average performance, and the increasing demand point to a long-term establishment of sustainable investments in the market.

Recycled fibers for circular economy - The case of the fashion industry

Golay, Estelle January 2021 (has links)
Some fashion companies have started to use recycled fibers to improve their sustainability practices, as it is a way to implement circularity into their business. By combining the theoretical frameworks of stakeholder theory, socio-technical (ST) systems and sustainable business models (SBM), this study discusses how the current business models of fashion companies relate to the concept of circular economy and what fashion companies’ future perspectives are. Based on a case study approach, empirical data was collected on six Nordic fashion companies: Acne Studios, Filippa K, Ganni, House of Dagmar, Gina Tricot and Pure Waste. Both fastfashion and high-fashion companies are reviewed, as their approach to business and sustainability differ. Drivers, challenges, partnerships, future perspectives to recycled fibers are discussed for each company and put in relation with the concept of circular economy. Additional circular initiatives from the companies are considered. The key findings indicate that fashion companies are motivated to use recycled fibers because of their sense of responsibility and wish to continue doing their business. Their future goals, collaborations and additional circular initiatives depicts a forward-looking attitude hopeful about the potential of sustainability. This study contributes to the understanding of implementation of circularity elements from a corporate perspective in the fashion sector, and what is needed to further implement and develop the use recycled fibers.
