Effect of seed-placed phosphorus and sulphur fertilizers on canola plant stand, early season biomass and seed yield

Grenkow, Laryssa 10 September 2013 (has links)
Seed-placed phosphorus (P) and sulphur (S) fertilizers can reduce canola plant stands. Field studies were conducted to determine the effect of various sources and rates of seed-placed P and S fertilizers on canola plant stand, early season biomass accumulation and seed yield. Conventional granular P and S blends increased the risk of seedling damage, but increased the frequency of yield response. Liquid fertilizers were similar in seedling damage but generally less effective in increasing seed yield compared to granular fertilizers. Novel fertilizers were more seed-safe but less reliable than conventional sources in increasing seed yield. A growth room experiment was conducted to determine the effect of soils from different landscape positions on the toxicity of seed-placed ammonium sulphate (AS) and monoammonium phosphate (MAP). Canola emergence was reduced and delayed by seed-placed MAP and AS. Ammonium sulphate in particular has a high risk of NH3 toxicity on calcareous hilltop soils

Bebrų įtaka medynams VĮ Vilniaus miškų urėdijoje / Influence of Beavers on forest stands of Vilnius Forest Enterprise

Musteikis, Rimvydas 17 June 2014 (has links)
Baigiamajame darbe tiriama bebrų įtaka VĮ Vilniaus miškų urėdijos medynams. Darbo objektas – Vilniaus miškų urėdijos girininkijų miškuose esanti bebrų populiacija ir jų įtaka aplinkai. Darbo tikslas – išanalizuoti ir įvertinti bebrų įtaką medynams VĮ Vilniaus miškų urėdijos miškuose. Tikslui įgyvendinti buvo iškelti tokie uždaviniai: 1. Nustatyti bebrų gausą ir tankį Vilniaus urėdijos miškuose. 2. Nustatyti bebraviečių pasiskirstymą urėdijos girininkijų miškuose. 3. Vienos... The subjekt of research – beaver population living in the forests of Vilnius State Forest Enterprise and its influence on the environment. The aim of the research – to analyze and evaluate the influence of beaver activity on forest stands in the forests of Vilnius State Forest Enterprise. The achieve the aim, the following tasks were raised: 1. To determine the abundance and density of beaver population in the forests of Vilnius State Forest Enterprise. 2. To ascertain the distribution of beaver lodges in the forests og the enterprise. 3. To assess the influence of beaver activity on forest stands. Methodology – analyzis of literature, assessment of beaver lodges, analysis of beaver activity signs, photofixation. Cartographic material is used along with forest inventory data, account of beaver population is conducted and its influence on the environment is evaluated. A more dateiled research of beaver population and its activity on the territory of twelve forest districts in Vilnius State Forest Enterprise were carried out in autumn, winter and spring of the years 2012 – 2014. Primary data on the location of beaver lodges, classification, influence on the environment were collected based on information provided by foresters and forest inventory. It was specified in nature, looking also for new lodges. Results. The research has shown that in the Vilnius State... [to full text]

Synthesizing the sit-to-stand movement using fuzzy logic-based control and a simple biomechanical model

Prinz, Robert K. 24 August 2010 (has links)
This thesis puts forward a fuzzy logic-based control strategy for artificially reproducing the sit-to-stand movement. The aim of this work is to contribute to the machine intelligence being developed for advanced mobility support devices; and specifically, those which are able to assist the mobility impaired user with the sit-to-stand task. Three fuzzy logic controllers were designed. The first controller seeks to move the model into the “most stable” configuration. The second seeks to move the model toward the goal configuration (i.e., standing). And the third combines the output from the first two controllers to produce a unified control action. Each controller was implemented and tested in software using Mathwork’s Matlab(TM). The results of the software simulation were compared against motion capture data taken from a single healthy male test subject. The automated controller was shown to produce a movement very similar to the natural sit-to-stand movement.

Afforestation and stand age affected soil respiration and net ecosystem productivity in hybrid poplar plantations in central Alberta, Canada

Shi, Zheng 11 1900 (has links)
Afforestation and stand development can significantly affect soil respiration and net ecosystem productivity (NEP). I studied 1) the effects of afforestation on NEP by comparing cropland previously planted to barley (on a barley-barley-alfalfa-alfalfa-alfalfa rotation) and that converted to a hybrid poplar (Populus deltoides Populus petrowskyana var. Walker) plantation and 2) the NEP along a chronosequence of stands aged 5-, 8-, 14-, and 16-year old in 2009 in central Alberta, Canada. Soil respiration and NEP decreased in the first two to three years after afforestation, while both generally increased with stand development. The ecosys model was used to simulate carbon dynamics in the plantations over a 20-year rotation under contrasting soil conditions. Soil conditions of the 14-year-old plantation accumulated the greatest amount of ecosystem carbon over the whole rotation. The research indicated that plantations could be a net carbon source in the first few years after afforestation and then became a net carbon sink, helping to mitigate net CO2 emissions for the remainder of the rotation. / Soil Science
