Johansson, Isabelle January 2009 (has links)

Introduction and research question: This study investigates the widely discussed notion “Corporate Social Responsibility” and its practice in the tourism industry. In the contemporary society more companies are realizing the significance of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and its potential as a means of differentiation. The author’s interest in this particular phenomenon was awakened after reading about the business case of Scandic Hotels. This is a company that nowadays is referred to as “Scandinavia’s leading hotel chain”. However, in the early 90’s the company was facing bankruptcy. Hence, a new strategy based on responsibility towards the environment was developed and later on executed. These facts led the author to question how can and as of today are CSR implemented in the tourism industry. Consequently the research question for this thesis is: how is CSR implemented in the tourism industry?

Purpose: This study aims to explore the CSR operations of two hotel chains.

Delimitation: In order to present a study with greater depth and obtain a deeper understanding of the implementation of CSR, the study is therefore limited to two hotel chains.

Method: The results of this study have been derived through the use of a qualitative method referred to as “grounded theory”. Unstructured interviews with employees from the different hotel chains have been conducted in order to collect vital data and answer the research question as successful as possible. In order to develop a theoretical analytical framework the author has studied various scientific articles and other appropriate literature in the subject.

Empirical data and conclusion: The study clarifies how CSR in this particular context is implemented strategically, both locally and globally. The hotel chains perceive CSR as an approach of enhancing their corporate reputation and thus its profitability. Due to these beliefs, CSR is implemented as a tool in e.g. the development of new services and/or modifications of services. However, it is also revealed that acting responsible to employees is a precondition in order to successfully and legitimately practise CSR. In order for the CSR activities to be successfully implemented, the study also concludes the significance of leadership and employee knowledge and engagement. Ideas for further research involve investigating how organisational structures affect the implementation of CSR. Moreover, another proposition involves investigating how CSR is implemented as a competitive tool in customer sales interactions.

Strategic understanding : A qualitative study on similarities and differences in perceptions of strategy

Batamuriza, Florance, Berg, Tobias, Hatami, Tony January 2006 (has links)
In today’s society, strategy becomes more important because of the ever fast changing environment. Companies all around the world set strategies, in order to grow and earn a profit, and wish for them to be implemented the way they were intended to be. Therefore, we believe it is important to investigate individuals’ perceptions of firm strategy. The purpose of this thesis is therefore to investigate individuals’ perception and understanding of firm strategy, and to see how these perceptions show similarities and differences. Our aim is also to see how cognitive mapping in relation to a strategic model can be helpful both for practitioners and researchers. Collection of primary data was done by interviewing five employees on different hierarchical levels in Company X that is active in multiple different business areas both in Sweden and abroad. The interviews were later analysed with the help of theories such as cognitive structures and maps, and Whittington’s (2001) generic perspective of strategy. This model recognizes four approaches to strategizing, namely Classical, Evolutionary, Systemic and Processual. The two former ones have a Profit-maximizing outcome, while the latter two are Pluralistic in outcome. During the analysis we found some similarities and differences. It was found that not all employees, individually or together, could be categorised under one specific approach. It is hypothesized that this could be because of the fact that they are at different levels and positions in the company, but they had similar perception on long-term planning as a firm strategy. The interviewees in Company X have shown different perceptions when relating to strategy. We come to the conclusion that it is important for managers and strategic decision makers that they understand and take the differences and similarities under consideration when delegating and injecting new strategies into a company. We think this could then help them to enhance an understanding of their own strategic organisation. Although case studies tend to be subjective, this is pointed out as the main limitation of the methodology. The researchers’ interpretation of the interviews lay as the foundation of the analysis and conclusion, and in order to make the study as objective as possible, clear and relevant selection of theories and literature was used to support the claims made in the thesis.

The use of impressionistic tools in a structural vaccum: a grounded theory study on corporate philanthropy

Eriksson, Karin January 2013 (has links)
This classic grounded theory study reflects companies work with corporate philanthropy (CP), and has a specific focus on companies with Swedish roots who are operating in South Africa. The theory illustrates how the companies perceive themselves to be forced to engage in CP, and their main solution to this problem is trying to optimise their CP work so it benefits both themselves and their beneficiaries. The companies are operating in a structural vacuum with regards to their CP work, and consequently, they make use of impressionistic tools in their attempt to optimise the work. There is arguably a need for companies to adopt a more strategic approach. The empirical data is collected from semi structured interviews with companies during 2012.

Kim, Hyun-Jung 05 1900 (has links)
The concept of text-level organization is required in French literacy education for Korean learners. The major objective of this study was to explore a strategic approach which emphasizes the concept of textual typology on text-level language learning, as well as its cognitive and cultural dimensions of transfer, particularly in relation to French literacy education in multilingual learning (Korean, French and English). The textual typology which is deeply embedded in the empirical traditions of French literacy education has been a useful educational tool not only for teaching rhetorical conventions but also for practicing lexical and grammatical usage. Data were obtained from 21 Korean aged 14 to 15 years who study in English-French multilingual learning environments in Montreal. For comparative purposes, the results of the reading activity of three groups of seven students with elementary, intermediate and advanced competence in French as a second foreign language were analyzed. Our empirical research focuses on three issues. The first issue deals with whether the textual typology facilitates access to the text-level meaning as a useful pedagogical tool especially for low French level learners who have a limited vocabulary and grammar. We mobilized students’ background knowledge using English texts and we verified if they use it when they read French texts. The Post hoc contrasts showed that the textual typology is a profitable tool especially for beginners. The second issue is concerned with the practice of the strategic reading approach using a textual typology. The post-hoc about reading comprehension provided empirical support for the positive effects of reading strategies, not only for learning rhetorical conventions but also for understanding lexical and grammatical usage. And the results indicate crosslinguistic influence effects as well. The third issue focuses on the writing process with emphasis on the rhetorical norm in French writing. An analysis of students’ written texts showed that the rhetorical pattern of textual typology guided effectively to well formed writings in rhetorical and cultural dimension. In conclusion, the results demonstrated that the participants could effectively use the textual typology as well-developed networks of relevant prior knowledge in multilingual learning. And the strategic approach could stimulate the practice of the textual typology in textual comprehension and composition during reading and writing process.

Gestão estratégica de ganhos: uma proposta de gestão estratégica de custos utilizando os princípios da teoria das restrições, aplicada em uma fabricante de autopeças / Strategic throughput management: a strategic cost management purpose based on the principles of the theory of constraints, applied on a auto parts manufacturing company

Nunes, Marcelo Serra 22 September 2006 (has links)
The enterprising management frequently confronts itself with new concepts and new practices to the costs management, with the objective of better identify the needs of an organization nowadays. This model of management offers many methodologies. However, many of these methodologies are highly complexes and hard of applying. This paper tries to present a management alternative, with low complexity, using management accountancy with strategic focus. This can be done thru analysis of the strategic approach, analysis of the value chain, with the theory of constraints principles and its accountancy, given by throughput accouting. The main purpose was applied as a case study in an auto parts manufacturing company, where its potential and limits were verified. The TOC has been widely spread as a production management methodology, starting from the principle that at every system exists a restriction and its best management results in maximum monetary gain to the organization, although complementing its action presents its strategic form, sustained by three elements that fulfill each other: to make money, to guarantee a satisfactory intern ambient and to satisfy the market today and in the future. The conflicts management that exists between these three elements is the key to a well-succeed management strategy. Differing from other forms of management accountancy, the throughput accouting takes the accountancy results as profit, making relative the idea of costs in the process of accountancy management of an organization, beginning with this vision, this paper suggests a structure that could be known as SCM.

Vehicle-to-Grid in Sweden:Industry Challenges and StrategicOpportunities : A Comprehensive Analysis / Vehicle-to-Grid i Sverige: Industriella Utmaningar och Strategiska Möjligheter

Nyström, Julia, Ramic, Dino January 2024 (has links)
As Sweden ambitiously works toward fulfilling its climate goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2045, the transportation sector emerges as a critical area of focus, given its substantial impact on regional emissions. In achieving these goals, Vehicle to Grid (V2G) stands out as a promising solution for integrating renewable energy sources and balancing the energy ecosystem. The technology is used to not only charge Electric Vehicles (EVs) but also to discharge electricity stored in the battery, presumably during peak demand periods. This thesis aims to explore the integration of V2G within the automotive industry, through a focal lens of the Swedish market and its conditions. The aim is dissected into an investigation and analysis of the acting barriers and drivers of V2G together with an examination of strategic business approaches that automotive manufacturers can employ to facilitate V2G integration and adoption. Through expert interviews and a comprehensive literature review, this study evaluates the current landscape, challenges, and opportunities associated with V2G in the Swedish context, providing insights into practical strategies for automotive manufacturers. The study finds that regulatory uncertainty, economic incentivization, technological and infrastructural readiness, and market dynamics act as significant barriers, while political interest, social consciousness, and legislative action toward sustainability are key drivers. With these barriers and drivers in mind, establishing a clear and secure business landscape for V2G implementation and adoption is outlined as the main aim of a strategic approach. In order to capture the aim of a strategic approach, the thesis proposes actionable strategies for automotive manufacturers to facilitate the integration of V2G, such as stakeholder collaboration, consumer education, and policy advocacy.

A socio-economic approach to a comprehensive quality management of higher education in Tunisia

Safi, Hanen 13 June 2012 (has links)
This research broaches the implementation of quality management in Tunisian colleges, particularly in the field of engineering. The case study is a college which experimented with this approach, sponsored by the Ministry of Higher Education. Quality is the spearhead of the Tunisian administration so as to contribute to the socio-economic development of the country and to the competitiveness of Tunisian higher education. . The implementation was embedded in the TQM framework and methodology that are outlined in the first part of the dissertation, as an international norm and standard. It enables a teleological implementation of quality management, resulting in getting the accreditation by importing a western and global approach to quality. This method structures the quality of products and processes and drives the operation management. However, we assume that there is a need for an axiologic axis to supplement the teleological axis in Tunisia so as to propose an integrated approach to quality management, which requires designing a compatible theoretical and methodological framework. Our research shows that the socio-economic approach to integrated quality management is required to enable such compatibility. The intervention methodology doesn’t consist in defining quality only through the objectives, but through the conditions and possibilities of change, and through transforming the very underpinnings and infrastructure of the organizations so as to better reach the objectives.
