Field Dependence and the Effectiveness of Training in Two Selected Orientations to Counseling

Johnson, Mildred Ann 08 1900 (has links)
This study investigates the effect of Witkin's cognitive-style variable on training success in two different orientations to counseling. Field-dependent individuals exhibit more social orientation, social compliance, and emotional warmth than field-independent individuals. Conversely, field-independent individuals exhibit more internal directedness, achievement orientation, emotional distance, and analytical task orientation than field-dependent individuals. Traits associated with field dependence appeared more complementary to an interpersonal-skills counseling approach, while traits associated with field independence appeared more complementary to behavior-modification techniques. Thus it was hypothesized that field-dependent individuals would be significantly more successful and satisfied with interpersonal skills training than would field-independent individuals, and that field-independent individuals would be more successful and satisfied with behavior modification training.

Knowledge and attitudes of Iranian parents and students (age 11-18) about the new educational guidance program, and their perceptions of the guidance counselor's role

Boroumand, Parvin 01 January 1973 (has links)
Planning of educational and guidance programs is conducted without providing a way for parents and students to express their expectations of that program and without discovering how well the parents and students understand the program which is proposed. Historically, education in Iran has been organized to allow for no involvement of the community in educational planning and change. Students and parents have had to accept the programs without expressing their attitudes toward these programs or raising questions as to their validity. A great number of students and their parents have not been satisfied with the services of the schools, and the result has been that they have lost interest in educational affairs. Consequently, they have tried to ignore all problems having to do with schools and education. The Fourth Plan Program, while introducing counseling and guidance into the school program, nevertheless does not provide for an increased amount of parent and student involvement in the decisions which directly affect them. In order to gain information about the concerns and attitudes of people at all socio-economic levels during the process of the current reforms, direct inquiry from students and parents at the middle and lower socio-economic level is needed. Therefore, it seemed appropriate to survey the extent of the knot/ledge and the attitudes of Iranian school students and their parents toward the new educational system. In addition, it appeared important to gain information about their perceptions and expectations of the role of guidance counselors in the schools.

Attitudes of American School Counselor Association Members toward Utilizing Paraprofessionals in School Counseling

Astramovich, Randall L. 08 1900 (has links)
The principal investigator (PI) for this study surveyed 207 American School Counselor Association (ASCA) members on their attitudes toward utilizing trained counseling paraprofessionals in school counseling. The PI also examined the relationship between participants’ attitudes and their subjective reports of the counselor-student ratios in their schools, the amount of work time they spent providing direct counseling services to students, and the extent to which their districts experienced a school counselor shortage. The participants’ mean reported counselor-student ratio (1:464.63) significantly exceeded ASCA recommendations of 1:250. Elementary counselors reported the highest counselor-student ratios while high school counselors reported the lowest. Furthermore the PI found a significant linear trend for counselor-student ratios to decrease as school level increased. The participants’ reported mean percentage of time involved in direct counseling services (61.48%) fell significantly below the ASCA recommended 70%. Elementary counselors reported the highest amount of time involved in direct counseling services while high school counselors reported the lowest. The PI also found a significant linear trend for percentages of time involved in direct services to decrease as school level increased. Over one-fourth of the participants indicated school counselor shortages existed in their districts. A majority of participants supported utilizing counseling paraprofessionals in their schools. The PI found a significant negative correlation between support for counseling paraprofessionals and percentage of time involved in direct services. Participants reporting the lowest percentage of time providing direct services to students thus expressed the strongest endorsement for utilizing counseling paraprofessionals. Participants most strongly endorsed assigning clerical duties to counseling paraprofessionals. They likewise endorsed assigning some indirect helping duties to counseling paraprofessionals. However, participants strongly opposed assigning direct counseling duties to counseling paraprofessionals. Based on the results of the study the PI developed recommendations for school counselors, school administrators, state education agencies, and institutions of higher learning regarding the training, education, and job duties of counseling paraprofessionals.

The present research aims to understand and analyze the practices adopted for guiding the work of completion of undergraduate Accounting in Institutions of Higher Education of the city of S??o Paulo, offering stricto sensu graduate studies and if such practices can promote integration between undergraduate and graduate school. In order to achieve the goal, interviews have been made with eight teachers, graduates with Master or Doctor, of four Institutions of Higher Education of the city of S??o Paulo, through a survey characterized as descriptive and qualitative type as the approach. The data were collected through documentary analysis and in-depth interview and analyzed by means of the technique of content analysis. The findings of the survey show that teachers guiding converge in many respects their practices of guidance when you establish a good relationship with the students, understand and try to overcome the difficulties that they report, adopt methodological rigour in guidance and correction of the work, recognize a good TCC and their goals and understand how relevant the participation of students in research projects. Dissonant points are that few are those who use their own research in the classroom, present disagreements, particularly on belief as to the purposes of the TCC in contribute to student learning and its insertion in scientific research and the world of work and in the way they deal with academic plagiarism. Other results show that not always the guiding teachers are the same who teach in the strict sense, not everybody knows or has participated in the preparation or review of your PPP IES, all are satisfied with the profession and with the guiding function and that the final placement at the TCC does not allow him to fulfil effectively its objectives, mainly the highlight and communicate the knowledge produced. The research findings have not found evidence of integration between graduation and post-graduation stricto sensu, therefore it can be concluded that the practices of guidance do not contribute adequately to promote integration between the two levels of education.
