A search for a prompt atmospheric muon neutrino flux in the northern hemisphere using data releases from IceCube

Haberland, Marcus January 2020 (has links)
The IceCube Neutrino Observatory is a cubic kilometre scale detector for high-energy neutrinos above hundreds of GeV produced in Earth’s atmosphere as well as outside our solar system whenever particles are accelerated to ultra-relativistic energies. The prompt atmospheric contribution is a result of the creation of heavy mesons with charm components in the atmosphere. Past studies from IceCube using a maximum likelihood estimation over the whole neutrino energy spectrum always reported a best-fit zero prompt contribution so far [1–5], contrary to theory [6, 7]. In this analysis we tried to measure this prompt atmospheric flux in muon neutrino event data from different IceCube releases. In contrast to past studies we performed a binned least-squares fit of the conventional atmospheric flux from data at low energies and subtracted this fit and an astrophysical flux reported by IceCube to measure a prompt contribution. Due to a lack of statistics and accessible information from data releases, our results are also compatible with a zero prompt contribution.

La performance académique des étudiants en première année universitaire : influence des capacités cognitives et de la motivation / The academic performance of university students in their first-year : influence of cognitive abilities and motivation

Lambert-Le Mener, Marielle 07 December 2012 (has links)
Today, academic failure is closely monitored, especially when first year students are concerned. The aim of this dissertation is the comprehension of the mechanism that builds academic success. The approach is both quantitative and integrative. For this purpose, data have been collected from 700 first year students in social administration, law and psychology areas in the university of Burgundy. Collected information allows to control academic and demographic factors. This dissertation focuses on two aspects : a measure of the student’s cognitive abilities at their entry in the university and a measure of their motivation during the course of the year. The results show that the school background of students plays a crucial role in the prediction of their university success. This school determinism, however, is tempered with the indirect effect of social origin, establishing the persistence of social inequalities in success at the university level. Cognitive abilities also have an effect mediated by the school career, playing positively on success. To these factors determined prior to university entrance, shall be added the personal project of the student. Choices made by interest in the discipline augur better chances of success. Motivational abilities of the student impact most directly on their success. Measured in the context of the self-determination theory, intrinsic motivation has a positive influence while amotivation results in worse performance. Moreover, motivation is an asset for good students, but plays only a moderate role for average students and even none for the weakest. This result is highlighted by the positive effect of perceived competence on achievement, mediated by a higher intrinsic motivation.

HandJet / HandJet

Žáčková, Kristýna Unknown Date (has links)
In this diploma thesis, I focus on the main principles of the HandJet mobile printer. This printer is mostly intended for industrial use to mark products and spaces with 2D and EAN codes. Despite the purely utilitarian function of the printer, I have decided to use it for artistic purposes. I look for its potential in application in the field of graphic design and art. I record the process as a part of the work process of a graphic designer when delivering assignments via research, sketching, and automatic drawing. The key aspect is the exploration of the possibilities of visual form. The result is a series of prints presented in the form of an installation.

Teaching software testing in a modern development environment / Lära ut mjukvarutestning i en modern utvecklingsmiljö

Gawell, Anders, Kallin, Anton January 2019 (has links)
All developers understand the benefits of testing their code to ensure its functionality. Today’s market is moving further towards design principles where testing is a central or driving force during development. This puts a certain pressure on academia to supply these skills to their students.Recently the course II1302 Projects and project methods at the Royal Institute of Technology in Kista made a concerted effort to introduce the students of the course to these modern concepts. This thesis investigates how areas of testing can effectively be introduced to the students in the course, utilizing a tailored example that takes the area of testing into particular consideration and how to automate it via DevOps-tools provided by a cloud-based service. Further, it also makes an attempt to provide additional material to be used for teaching testing in conjunction with the example provided. The case study covers the development of an example application, meant to mirror a typical student project. It also covers how this was used for teaching the students about the testing areas considered. The covered testing areas include unit testing, integration testing and UI testing. With these given testing areas, the application and an associated learning module was developed for each area in question. Relevant standards, strategies and approaches was also identified for each of these areas. The thesis also presents important properties to take into consideration when developing similar examples in the future, based on the experiences obtained during the study. These include needs such as understandable by inexperienced students, applicability outside the course, adherence to established standards, tools that are simple to use and an architectural structure that allows for testing. Some improvements are also recommended: the students would benefit from learning software testing from an early stage of their studies. The content of the learning modules should also be brought to the students earlier in the course, so it can be applied in their projects at an early stage as well.Further research is also recommended to evaluate the suitability of using other cloud-based environments instead, and to evaluate the applicability of the learning modules for students of varying disabilities.

Introducing the Modern and Future Development of “Web Applications” Using JHipster Development Platform.

Vilcinskaite, Milena January 2021 (has links)
Generating web applications with correct structure and modern functionalities using a development platform is not widely known for students in academia around the world. Modern web development is moving further towards advancement where different functionalities adapted for web application development increase and become more central in today's market. Introducing modern concepts in web application development to the students in academia at an early stage is essential in order to provide better insight of how to suitably develop and maintain the structure of modern "Web Applications".  This thesis describes the work carried out to investigate how a web application can effectively be developed and structured by the undergraduate students in the course II1302 Projects and project methods at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) using a development platform.  The case study is conducted as a research method for this thesis. The research method revolved around experimentation with an example application to identify the possibilities of using a development platform in conjunction to improve the teaching of modern web application development early in education, and then apply the development platform in the course's future projects.  This thesis identifies pertinent fields of knowledge throughout the development of a web application using the development platform to learn about the relevant concepts and definitions of modern and future technologies used in web application development. The implementation of the web application covers the areas such as automation, deployment, and monitoring. These areas are utilized in the form of the following aspects: DevOps, CI/CD, integration cloud deployment, IoT simulated device, MVC design pattern architecture for both frontend and backend, programming frameworks, i.e., Angular JS frontend framework and Spring Boot backend framework. A description of how the application is managed and what technologies and resources are used is presented.  These aspects are used throughout the process of web application development. The requirements of using the development platform aim to be relevant to the students' studies at a sufficient difficulty level in course II1302. The students are expected to have an extended knowledge in basic web application development.
