Developing and Establishing the Reliability and Validity of the East Asian Student Stress Inventory (EASSI)Ding, Jiansan 05 1900 (has links)
The primary purpose of this study was to develop and establish the reliability and validity of the East Asian Student Stress Inventory. Data was obtained from 235 East Asian students at the University of North Texas during the fall semester of 1992. The procedures used were a two-week interval test-retest for reliability, experts' assessment of test items for face validity, a factor analysis, a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficient for construct validity. Significance was set at the .05 level. The EASSI was identified as having moderately high reliability. High test anxiety, physiological symptoms, social support, financial difficulty, and culture shock were found to be constructs of the EASSI. Majority of independent variables in this study effectively identified stressors and stresses among East Asian students.

MASTER OF SOCIAL WORK STUDENT PERSPECTIVES ON MINDFULNESS MEDITATION IN CURRICULAPartida, Deyssi 01 September 2019 (has links)
Mindfulness meditation (MM) has been used as an intervention tool for mental health diagnosis in the field of social work for some time and there are numerous empirical literature and research about the benefits of MM in practice. Despite the evidence and the use of MM in the field, there is very limited incorporation or MM programs and courses in the Master of Social Work (MSW) education and curricula. This study aimed to explore MSW students’ perspectives on mindfulness meditation and whether they would find it beneficial in their curricula. The study collected qualitative data through interviews MSW graduates at a Southern California University. The data collected was analyzed through ATLAS software. The findings of the study give way for future research to help note the interest of MM within MSW students and how it can help benefit MSW students personally and professionally by providing education and practice in the MSW education field. Participants expressed desire to learn more about MM, as they did not feel equipped to confidently practice it in the field. Including MM practice and education could help fortify the field of social work by creating better MSW professionals due to its benefits.

Examining help-seeking attitudes in African American collegians : the role of minority student stress, out-group comfort, cultural congruity, and counselor racial preferencesJones, Bianca Joanvye 25 September 2014 (has links)
In recent years, scholars have moved beyond attributing academic difficulties to cognitive and personal characteristics of African American students, and have begun to consider the effects of the predominantly White university (PWU) setting on the educational and psychological outcomes of Black collegians. Unfortunately, the literature paints a bleak picture of the social context of African American students at PWUs which ultimately impedes students' academic persistence and achievement (Gloria, Kurpius, Hamilton, & Wilson, 1999) as well as psychological wellness (Prelow, Mosher, & Bowman, 2006). The psychological ramifications of social and educational conditions for African American students at PWUs, along with higher attrition rates would substantiate the tremendous use of campus mental health services by this student population. Yet, the literature reveals that even when services are easily accessible and are provided for free or at extremely discounted prices, African American students choose not to seek professional psychological help (Nickerson, Helms, & Terrell, 1994). Drawing upon the psychosociocultural theoretical framework proposed by Gloria and Rodriguez (2000), this study examined if variables specific to the PWU environment - minority student stress, out-group comfort, and cultural congruity - served as predictors of attitudes towards seeking professional psychological help in a sample of African American collegians. This study also analyzed if counselor racial preference served as a mediator between the predictors and help-seeking. Survey data were collected from 198 Black college students attending a large, PWU in the Southwest. Results revealed that cultural congruity was the only significant predictor of help-seeking attitudes, and counselor racial preference was not a significant mediator. Exploratory analyses indicated gender differences in the relationship between the psychosociocultural variables and counselor racial preferences. Implications for practice and research in counseling psychology are discussed. / text

Factors of Resilience that Support University Art and Design StudentsMorgan, Ruth C. 01 January 2016 (has links)
Graduation rates in bachelor's degrees in the United States continue to be lower than stakeholders expect, despite the many advantages of college completion. This phenomenological study investigated the interplay between resilience, coping strategies, and college completion for undergraduate art and design students in an effort to improve graduation rates. The purpose of this study was to address gaps in the literature regarding art and design students' resilience and academic success. Findings were interpreted using 3 conceptual frameworks: resilience theory, Bronfenbrenner's ecology of human development, and Dweck's theory of mindsets and self-beliefs. Research questions guiding this study addressed the external and internal factors that support resilience, the most stressful situations students faced while attending the university, and the coping strategies students used to manage stress, regain resilience and graduate. Data collection included individual semi-structured interviews with 11 graduating seniors and an alum from a single public university in the eastern United States. Data were supplemented by individual semi-structured interviews with 1 faculty member and 2 campus counselors from the same university who had extensive interactions with art and design undergraduates. Key results from the data analysis found that supportive relationships with peers, access to financial aid, stress-free living environments, motivation, tenacity, and self-efficacy were important factors for academic success. The most stressful situations students reported were studio critiques, a lack of compatibility with roommates, and health issues. This study promotes positive social change by providing information for stakeholder's use in bolstering students' resilience in order to manage stress and improve college completion rates.

Planner Go: Aplicativo freemium de organización para estudiantes universitariosLucero Vivanco, Rafael Alberto Elías, Mantilla Zapata, Key Leslie Juliette, Marca Lira, Melanie, Montilla Arenas, Maribed Alejandra, Ticona Samaniego, Alexis Enrique 25 November 2021 (has links)
The objective of this research is to find a solution for students who have difficulty organizing their day-to-day life with their studies, help them find balance between personal and work life, among other additional activities. This project reflects a freemium business model, since it is based on a service that users can try for free for a limited period of time and then if it meets their expectations, they can seek to acquire the premium service, which has an additional cost due to the fact that it no longer has restrictions and allows the user to have all the functionalities of the mobile application. The possibility of creating a freemium mobile application that offers functionality and techniques that allow users to organize themselves in the best way will be studied with special focus on improving their academic performance, as well as reducing levels of stress and anxiety that a disorganized and chaotic university life can cause.
The development of this study begins in a first step, which is to identify personal needs, which has been seen in different services separately, but until now it has not been applied under a single service. Therefore, in-depth interviews were conducted to be able to empathize with the potential user and find out their perception of the proposed business idea. Then, the project was divided into two relevant segments for business purposes, which would be group of users who would use the application for free and users who would choose the premium service. Additionally, different experiments were carried out in order to validate the value proposition and the different aspects of the model Canvas of the business. Subsequently, various experiments were carried out to validate the user purchase and sales intentions, in such a way that we can verify the viability of the project in terms of scope and profitability. Therefore, a financial plan was developed based on real research sources that allows us to achieve a real vision of the viability and profitability of the freemium business model in a real life context. / Trabajo de investigación
