One of the important forums for cultural exchange on the campuses of most large universities in the United States is the International Student Center (ISC). These centers pen doors to the world by promoting opportunities to reach beyond cultural and political barriers so as to foster better understanding of humans, and their cultural differences and similarities. Even though these centers serve an important function on campus, they often are housed in spaces which have been adapted for the purpose rather than being designed specifically to meet the needs of the various ISC programs. The ISC at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VPI & SU) is such an example. The purpose of this project thesis was to develop a design program and design proposal for an ISC at VPI & SU, based on user needs assessment. The plans and renderings are to be used to seek support for building a facility on campus which has been specifically designed to meet the needs of the International Student Organization. Students, both graduate and undergraduate, and the staff of the ISC were surveyed to develop a design program. A site adjacent to the Hillcrest dormitory was selected and a new ISC was designed. The proposed ISC was designed according to the user needs assessment and design program. Drawings included conceptual sketches, adjacency diagrams, detailed floor plans, elevations, sections, and perspective views. / Master of Science

Campus Activities Middle Managers as Change Agents in Higher Education

The purpose of this study is to determine to what extent the individuals in middle management positions in campus activities perceive themselves to be effective as change agents. A thirty-three item survey was mailed to 315 directors. A total of 199 usable returns were received. The problem was investigated in terms of perceptions of (a) individual adequate training and competency to provide new and expanded service for today's student body, (b) individual influence on upper-level policy and decision making within their own reporting structure, and (c) commanding enough influence on campus to effect significant change.

Ideal Learning Spaces: the Student Perspective

Classrooms, libraries, student unions, and university campuses shape students’ learning experiences. These physical learning spaces set the stage for college student engagement and academic performance. Most of the research about the role of physical spaces in learning lacks the student perspective. The goal of this study was to offer a student-centered vision of ideal learning spaces. Students are the learners for whom learning spaces are designed, and this thesis examines the way students of one summer class at Oklahoma Baptist University conceptualized and interacted with their learning spaces. Data collection included surveys of the students, a focus group with members of the class, participant observation in the classroom, and interviews with students and the professor. Students viewed physical spaces as the backdrop for human action and chose spaces that supported their learning styles and goals. Students described supportive spaces as warm, purposefully crafted spaces, and full of other people who were seriously pursuing the same goals. This thesis explores the ways students conceptualized and interacted with learning spaces as a network of support for their learning and provides recommendations for the design of learning spaces that facilitate this support.

Studiesocial verksamhet, hälsa och delaktighet : En webbenkätundersökning på Mälardalens högskola

Delaktighet och socialt kapital är två viktiga beståndsdelar för en god hälsa. Inom dessa begrepp inryms sociala nätverk, socialt stöd och tillit som återkommer när föreningsdelaktighet diskuteras. I Sverige är föreningstraditionen väl förankrad vilket bevisas då ungefär hälften av Sveriges befolkning arbetar i en förening. Syftet med studien var att kartlägga studenters delaktighet i studiesocial verksamhet samt studera relationer mellan studenters delaktighet och hälsa. För att besvara syftet skickades en webbenkätundersökning till samtliga andraårsstudenter på akademin för hållbar samhälls- och teknikutveckling på Mälardalens högskola, Västerås. Resultatet, med en svarsfrekvens på 20 procent, visar att två tredjedelar av studenterna har deltagit i aktiviteter inom studiesocial verksamhet medan ungefär 40 procent var delaktiga i arbetet i någon förening. Anledningen till att studenter valde att vara delaktiga i arbetet var främst för att träffa andra människor och skapa kontaktnät. Statistiska signifikanstest av samband var inte möjliga att genomföra mellan deltagande i aktiviteter och hälsa, praktiskt stöd eller emotionellt stöd på grund av att datamaterialet var för litet och även snedfördelat. Det samma gällde samband mellan delaktighet i arbetet och hälsa, praktiskt stöd eller emotionellt stöd. Däremot fanns statistiskt signifikanta samband mellan både deltagande i aktiviteter och tillit samt delaktighet i arbetet och tillit. / Active participation and social capital are important factors for good health. The underlying components of these terms are; social network, social support and social trust. These are the basis for further discussion of participation in nonprofit organizations and unions. Sweden has a strong cultural tradition of membership in such groups and roughly half of the population work in one. The aim of this study survey was to monitor student’s participation in study related social activities and examine relations between student’s participation levels and ther overall health. To answer the aim of the study a web survey was sent to all second year students at the School of Sustainable Development of Society and Technology. Of those who received the questionnaire around 20 percent answered. Results suggested that two thirds of students had taken part in student union activities while about 40 percent had worked in some kind of union organization. The main motives for participation were to meet other people and to build social networks. Due to the fact that the survey data was too small and not equally divided , statistical significant test could not be performed. Correlations between taking part in union activities or working in student unions and practical support, emotional support or health was not possible to test. However, there were notable connections between both, participation in union activities, and working in a student union, and social trust. / Läsvärd!! :)
