Art as an expression of the unconscious psyche

Weiner, Elana January 1988 (has links)
This study aimed to investigate the use of expressive art as a manifestation of the unconscious psyche and as an indication of underlying personality dynamics. Its use as a significant medium for therapeutic encounter and exploration was investigated by analysing the art produced by four psychiatric in-patients during their participation in an eight-week art therapy programme. Each patient's art series was qualitatively and thematically interpreted with a focus upon the meaning of significant recurring images and motifs. The results of this study indicate that the particularity of each patient's graphic imagery enabled the lived experience of their struggles and preoccupations to emerge as uniquely different. Through their art productions they revealed the nature of their inner worlds and the power of their thoughts, feelings and experiences.

Jones, Anita Catherina 30 November 2003 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to determine whether dream analysis, as an educational psychological means, can provide insight into adolescent emotional problems. Hence, a literature study was done on adolescent emotional problems, on dreams and on dream analysis. Several classical and contemporary theories on dreams and dream analysis were analysed to design a model for dream analysis. A qualitative study, with five adolescent girls with emotional problems, followed. Data gathering included recorded dreams, interviews, diaries, a personality test, (the Emotions Profile Index), a projection medium (Three Wishes) and the above-mentioned model for dream analysis. Findings indicated that dream analysis can provide insight into adolescent emotional problems, revealing the intrapsychic world of the individual. Emotional problems that were revealed by the dream analysis, are anxiousness, aggression, a negative self-concept, feelings of being socially isolated and depression. Compensatory as well as regulatory functions of dreams were revealed by the empirical investigation. / Educational Studies / M. Ed. (specialisation in Counselling)

Conscious and non-conscious bases of social judgement: mindset and implicit attitudes in the perception of intergroup conflict

Unknown Date (has links)
Research on social judgment typically emphasizes one of three processes that enable unequivocal understanding of events with ambiguous causality. In the social influence perspective, people are susceptible to the interpretations offered by others. In the explicit attitudes perspective, people interpret events in line with their consciously held attitudes and values. In the implicit attitudes perspective, people interpret events in line with unconscious biases. The model investigated in the present study assumes that these processes vary in salience depending on people's mindset. Participants with low versus high implicit racial bias toward Blacks read a narrative concerning this altercation under either a lowlevel or a high-level mindset and then read a summary that blamed one of the parties or they did not read a summary. As predicted, low-level participants allocated responsibility to the African-American if they had a high implicit racial bias and to the White if they had a low implicit racial bias, regardless of the summary manipulation. Contrary to prediction, however, high-level participants' allocation of responsibility did not reflect their explicit prejudicial attitudes. Instead, they corrected for their implicit biases in their trait inferences and affective reactions, in line with research suggesting that a high-level mindset promotes self-regulatory processes in social judgment. / by Susan D. Voluntary/involuntary emotional processes and aggressive behavior

Kim, Min Young 02 April 2012 (has links)
This study estimated the association between aggressive behavior and two different types of emotion regulation, one operating on the conscious level with voluntary effort (i.e., suppression) and the other operating on the unconscious level with involuntary effort, or automatically (i.e., repression). Results from a correlation analysis among self-assessed suppression and repression and other-rated aggressive behavior showed that repression is more significantly linked to aggressive behavior than suppression. Further investigation using physiological and neural assessments was performed to determine the critical properties, including cardiac reactivity and neural substrates, of repression related to aggressive behavior. Based on the findings from multiple approaches in assessment, this study suggests that unconscious emotion change inferred from self-assessed repression (in Study 1) and neural activity (in Study 2) more significantly predicts aggressive behavior than personality. Implications for both aggression and emotion research are discussed along with the measurement equivalence issue.

The unconscious as a rhetorical factor: toward a BurkeLacanian theory and method

Johnson, Kevin Erdean, 1977- 28 August 2008 (has links)
This dissertation provides an exploration of the nature and scope of the category of the Unconscious as a necessary feature of rhetorical theory and criticism. In order to demonstrate the fundamental importance of the Unconscious to rhetorical theory and criticism, this dissertation focuses on Kenneth Burke's rhetorical theory of Dramatism. Burke is one of the most frequently cited theorists by rhetorical scholars, and offers a familiar site for rhetorical scholars to understand the Unconscious as a rhetorical factor. Burke formulated a theory of the Unconscious by drawing from Freudian psychoanalysis. Since Freud, Jacques Lacan has advanced and altered the Freudian understanding of the Unconscious. Therefore, by navigating the terrain of both Burkeian and Lacanian scholarship, this dissertation moves toward a BurkeLacanian theory and method to offer a more critical lexicon for the rhetorical study of the dialectical relationship between the conscious and Unconscious parts of the psyche. In doing so, this dissertation develops and answers the following questions: How can we theorize the Unconscious as a rhetorical factor? How is Burke's theory of the Unconscious rhetorically useful? How might we understand Burke's theory of rhetoric differently and better if we read his Freudian influences through Lacanian scholarship on the Unconscious? How is a theory of the BurkeLacanian subject rhetorically useful? How does a BurkeLacanian theory of the Unconscious inform productive criticism? This dissertation applies a BurkeLacanian theory of the Unconscious by introducing a rhetorical method called "Ideographic Cluster Quilting." This method moves toward the rhetorical study of texts as cultural psyches that are constructed from fragments of discourse that form around figures of abjection. In order to demonstrate the usefulness for studying Ideographic Cluster Quilts, this dissertation analyzes the cultural psyche that forms around the figure of the "illegal immigrant" as abject. In doing so, we gain an insight into the Unconscious hatred of humanity as the perverse core of American identity that qualifies which bodies do and do not matter. We will also gain an insight into the way nationalistic identities function within globalization by confining labor forces within national boundaries, while multinational corporations move freely around the world. / text

Filosofinė C. G. Jungo archetipų interpretacija / Philosophical interpretation of C. G. Jung‘s archetypes

Jurgelevičius, Gytis 11 August 2011 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / This master work is attempt to reveal Jung‘s theory background and to give it‘s main base – archetypes – conception. Jung‘s focus of attention pointed on individual‘s inner life. Own experience is the most important thing in a process of knowledge. Jung‘s beginning is human existence. He thinks that only subjective knowledge is significant. However this kind of knowledge also represents generality more or less. World-view is fundamental to subjective knowledge depth and width. World-view is nothing more nor less than constantly becoming consciousness. Extensive world-view is critical to more clear double-take on universe phenomenones and individual typical attitudes. Jung thinks that every person is unique, everyone sees himself and the universe differently and it depends on psychological type. This opinion variance and attitude relativism needs compensation. This function belongs to inborn human tendency to model general ideas. In Jung‘s theory consciousness is a small part of psyche. There is individual subconsciousness with unique, individual content and collective subconsciousness with universal content. Collective subconsciousness is heritable and it contains archetypes. This is heritable capability to form the ideas, which are completed with own experience content. Not the ideas are heritable, but tendency to create recurrent images and motives at all times and places. However Jung thinks that archetypical forms phenomenon could stand on conditionally mental or even... [to full text]
