In this thesis I do a comparative study between the Brazilian Portuguese Grammar
(henceforth BP) and European Portuguese Grammar (henceforth EP) concerning to
the word order, more specifically, with respect to the subject order in relation to the
verb in finite declarative phrases. One defends that Verb-Subject order (VS) has
been lost in the first language in (in)transitive contexts due a parametric change in
the marking of Null Subject Parameter caused by weakness of AGR, what implies to
consider that BP is losing the characterization of a prototypical null subject language
as the EP for become a non-prodrop subject language as English. In this order, in
inaccusative contexts, the visible morphologically agreement between a verbal
inflection and the post-verbal DP is generally not observed and this DP can also be
definite or indefinite, unlike what is proposed by Belletti s approach. Futhermore,
researches have assumed that the subject position with respect to the verb comes
from the fact of the syntax be conditioned by discoursive constraints. Therefore, with
respect to these aspects, the goals of this research are: a) to develop an analysis
about VS order in both grammars, considering the implications of the AGR richness
for the position of the subjects ; b) to characterize this richness from the
rediscussion of some theoretical proposals; c) to show counter-evidences to the
proposal of that the word order codifies the informational structure; d) to explain the
possibility of the non-visible morphologically agreement between the post-verbal DP
and the verbal inflection in inaccusative contexts and its implications for the type of
mechanism concerned to the nominative Case assignment and e) to argue against
the universality of the Definiteness Efect on the post-verbal DP. To develope this
study, the analysis bases itself on Pricinciples and Parameters, and the Distributed
Morphology frameworks. The sentence structures are results from introspection data.
During this research, it was possible to conclude that rich AGR that licences and
identifies referential null subjects in null subject languages has no correlation with
rich AGR that causes the verb movement in the syntax, and that preverbal subjects
occupy an A-position in BP and in EP, unlike what is generally proposed.
Futhermore, the different behaviour of VS order observed among these languages
receives explanatory support from the type of syntactic output generated by each
grammar in particular but not from discoursive constraints. With respect to the order
in which there is no visibility of morphological agreement between the verbalinflection
and the post-verbal DP in inaccusative contexts, I argue that it is a pseudo-
VS order, in which Definiteness Efect does not act on.
No decorrer desta pesquisa, é plausível

Sujeito nulo na história do português de São Paulo: 1878-1947 / Null subject in the history of the Portuguese of São Paulo: 1878-1947Nathalia Reis Fernandes 15 August 2012 (has links)
This work analyzes diachronically the pro-drop parameter in Brazilian Portuguese through statements given in a court of law or during police investigation. We believe that this kind of document shows past spoken language. After concluding that these statements can really be a source of spoken language, we extracted data to guide us through the situation of the pro -drop parameter in Brazilian Portuguese, at the time the statements were taken - end of 19th century/middle of 20th century. We only studied subordinate clauses, in a structure we call subordinate clause chain, which is very common in the type of document we chose until today. It consists in many subordinate clauses connected to the same matrix clause by que [that]. E. g., \"a testemunhai disse [the witness said] que não cvi sabe quanto a autora tinha no Banco Mauá, [...]; [that she doesn\'t know how much the complainant had in Mauá Bank,...] que o que ellai ouvio dizer pelo finado Cavalheiro [...]\" [that what she heard the dead Cavalheiro say...] We compared these data with those which supported a classical study in the subject by Duarte (1993). And we also checked what they could inform us if submitted to the hypotheses created by Barbosa, Duarte and Kato (2005). We concluded that the data extracted from the corpus behave just as it was expected for that period of time, but with slight indications of the changes that would occur ahead in time in Brazil.

This dissertation assumes the generative framework, notably, the Principles & Parameters model (Chomsky, 1981 and subsequent work). The main concern is on verifying the development of the subject and object pronominal systems in the acquisition of European Portuguese (EP) and Brazilian Portuguese (BP), based on a corpus composed of data from 4 children (2 Brazilian ones and 2 Portuguese ones), age 1;9.0 to 3;0.0. The development of the subject and object pronominal system during the acquisitional period investigated is described for both variants aiming at verifying whether the main differences pointed out by various researchers (Tarallo, 1993; Galves, 1986; 1987; 1998; Duarte, 1995) in so far as syntactic aspects are considered in the use of pronouns are already detectable. The relationship between the development of the pronominal system and the parametric options of both languages are also considered. The results obtained support the view that the differences observed between both variants are derived from the fact that BP is a topic-oriented language / Doutorado / Linguistica / Doutor em Linguística

A tese confirma a hipótese do "bilingüismo universal" de Roeper (1999), não apenas para o estágio inicial, mas para os estágios intermediário e final / Abstract: The aim of this study is to investigate the acquisition of the null subject in Brazilian Portuguese (BP) as a second language (L2) by native adult speakers of English and Italian in a situation of total immersion. The research was developed within the framework of the Principles and Parameters Theory (Chomsky 1981, 1986) and the Minimalist Program, Chomsky, 1993, 1995,2000). The research attempted to investigate whether the L2 leaders have access to Universal Grammar (UG) and what the form of that access would be. The results of the analysis confirmed a) the hypothesis of direct access to UG, through the use of the prcxlrop parameter's default value = null or overt subjects + the one-person agreement verbal form, in the production of English and Italian speakers in the initial phase of acquisition and, b) the hypothesis of indirect access to UG through LI, in the production of the English and Italian speakers in the non-initial phase of acquisition. Considering that prodrop languages do not constitute a single type, it was hypothesized that, based upon data from the input, the leamers would present the prcxlrop of BP, starting by the acquisition of the agreement in that language, which was confirmed. The analysis confirms the "universal bilingualism" hypothesis (Roeper, 1999), not only for the initial stage of acquisition, but also for the intermediate and final stages / Doutorado / Linguistica / Doutor em Linguística

A realização do sujeito pela elite paulistana do início do século XX: uma análise em perspectiva gerativista trans-sistêmica / realization of the subject by the elite of São Paulo beginning of the twentieth century: an analysis in Trans-systemic generativism perspectivePereira, Hélcius Batista 07 February 2011 (has links)
This paper analyses the trajectory of empty subjects and overt subjects in the standard language of the elite of São Paulo from the late XIX century to 1930s, when that city received a large influx of immigrants, who were speakers of languages with null subject . Starting from a critic assessment of the \"parametric variacionism\", based on Labov and Chomsky, we propose the \"trans-systemic generativism\". From this perspective, language is generated in two levels: in the biological and innate level, the language faculty, after matured, endows the individual with \"linguistic competence\"; in the social level, the habitus, after internalized, provides the individual with \"linguistic capital\", as proposed by Bourdieu. Therefore we believe that there is a generative module that allows individuals to offer their products in the highly concentrated linguistic market. The analysis of the linguistic corpora led us to conclude that the elite, despite making more use of empty subject, was already boosting the use of overt subjects, a phenomenon well advanced in the caipira dialect. This behavior is explained by structural factors internal to language, and also expressed, from the social-historical standpoint, a clear choice of a linguistic form as opposed to the standard language of immigrants, as established by the habitus of the elite.

De se a (vo)cê : o percurso da indeterminação no Português brasileiro / From if to (vo) cê: the course of indetermination in Portuguese BrazilianAssis, Jacqueline de Sousa Borges de. 14 July 2017 (has links)
Considering the alterations in the grammar of PB as symptoms of the remarking of the Null
Subject Parameter - PSN that the language has passed, I investigate the emergence of the 2nd
person pronoun with generic mark-up, widely used in the spoken language as an alternative
form to the pronouns: null non referential and generic, se , nós and a gente This thesis is
based on the hypothesis that vocêgen is used on the function of indeterminating pronoun like the
clitic se, whose deletion leaves this position empty or is substituted by vocêgen. I associate this
possibility with the syntactic changes processed in PB: deletion of clitic se; emergence of the
nominative weak pronoun paradigm in place of the pronominal Agr system as compensation
for the loss of the referential null subject (Kato, 2000); loss of the property of genericity of the
pronoun a gente ; emergence of existential constructions with ter ; tendency to fill the
position of subject that moves to the loss of the non referential and generic null, in clear
evidence of the linguistic embedding of the variation. The theoretical-methodological model
followed is that of Parametric Sociolinguistics proposed by Kato & Tarallo (1989). Thus, in
view of the interlinguistic variation, this thesis adopt as guiding principle Chomsky's
grammatical theory of Principles & Parameters (1981), and advances of this theory in its
minimalist version (Kato, 2000; Holmberg, 2010). The relevant point of this work in relation
to the implementation of vocêgen is in the proposition that the interior of INFL is the locus where
the pronoun is initially inserted before being moved to the position of grammatical subject of
the constructions of terex in which the pronoun does not establish thematic relation with the
verb. Considering the parametric variation, a comparative study with the EP proves that in
relation to the performance of indefinite subjects, BP and PE also exemplify relevant contrasts,
confirming the hypothesis that the syntactic changes that are triggering alteration of the PNS
value is a phenomenon that affects only PB. / Tese (Doutorado)
