Statements for Peace? : How Statements by Leaders Affect Domestic Support for Negotiations

Lindström, Marta January 2020 (has links)
This study explores the effect of statements by leaders on domestic support for negotiations. It distinguishes between two types of statements: those that humanise the out-group, and those that apologise for past wrongdoings. The theoretical argument is threefold. First, it is proposed that humanising statements can counter the narratives that delegitimise negotiations with outgroups and, thereby, increase support for negotiations. Second, it is argued that apologies by leaders activate aversion to collective guilt and therefore diminish support for negotiations. Third, it is theorised that the effect of statements is conditioned by individual-level adherence to beliefs that justify continued conflict (‘conflict-supporting narratives’). Specifically, the positive effect of humanising statements is expected to be driven primarily by low adherers of conflict-supporting narratives, whereas the negative effect of apologies is driven primarily by high adherers of conflict-supporting narratives. The findings, based on an online survey experiment conducted in the United States, support the hypothesis that apologies by in-group leaders decrease domestic support for negotiations and that this effect is driven by high adherers of conflict-supporting narratives. In contrast, humanising statements are found to have a null influence on support for negotiations, regardless of the level of adherence to conflict-supporting narratives.

Did the fascists get you? : The New Right's influence on right-wing populism

Madeland, Jonathan January 2020 (has links)
An experimental survey (N = 415) is used to evaluate fascist qualifications within party preference groups, regarding susceptibility to a neofascist communication style and gravitation toward fascist ideas. Testing the notion by fascism expert Roger Griffin, that the influence of the neofascist intellectual movement the New Right (la Nouvelle Droite) is successfully shaping the 21st century wave of right-wing populism, it is hypothesized that sympathizers of the Swedish right-wing populism equivalent (the Sweden Democrats) are more susceptible to a neofascist communication style and more preconditioned to agree with covertly fascist ideas (as based on the writings of the Nouvelle Droite). The results strongly support this hypothesis, although the potential for generalizability beyond the collected sample is limited. Using a causal networks approach, the failure to falsify the hypothesis is however considered a small but valid observation that bolsters its probability. The study contributes to the current research by further strengthening the bridge between the fields of populism and fascism.

Ramars inflytande på allmänna inställningartill kärnkraft : En experimentell studie som undersöker effekterna från ensidigt inramadinformation på den svenska allmänhetens attityder till kärnkraft

Eriksson, Emil January 2022 (has links)
Framed political issues are something most citizens are frequently exposed to when observingor participating in the public discourse. In Sweden, the nuclear power issue is an importantpolitical issue that is characterized by several different framed narratives. This study examineshow four different commonly occurring nuclear power frames affect Swedes’ attitudes towardSweden’s current and future use of nuclear energy in its energy supply. This was investigatedvia a survey experiment (n=202). No significant effect from frame-exposure to attitudestoward nuclear energy could be observed for any frame. Most Swedish citizens seems to havefairly stable beliefs in this issue, and do not let their attitudes get influences with ease. Leftrightideology was identified a decisive factor in Swedes attitudes toward this issue, and avery convincing phenomena is required to change these attitudes, at least in the short term.

Faces of Authenticity : A Comparative Analysis of Personalization Strategies in Shaping an Authentic Image of the Politician

Sillén, Karin January 2024 (has links)
The objective of this study is to investigate what type of personalization is more successful in shaping an authentic image of the politician. Two politicians; Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders have been chosen for the study. Hence, the questions that the study seeks to address are; What type of personalization is most successful in shaping an authentic image of Hillary Clinton? and What type of personalization is most successful in shaping an authentic image of Bernie Sanders? The method employed for this study is a survey experiment designed to compare perceived authenticity between the respondents for two different personalization types; privatization and emotionalization. The survey experiment, conducted during November and December 2023, had a total of 102 valid respondents. The data with perceived authenticity for the two personalization types were presented in a bivariate regression analysis. Results reveal that privatization is more successful in shaping an authentic image of Hillary Clinton, particularly among female respondents, indicating gender-based variations. For Bernie Sanders, the study finds no clear preference between privatization and emotionalization overall, but a gender-specific analysis suggests that privatization is more successful among female respondents.

Is the Price Too High? : A Survey Experiment on the Effects of Gendered Political Violence on Students’ Political Ambitions in Sweden

Uppgård Briesch, Beatrice January 2024 (has links)
This paper aims to address the research gap concerning the impact of gendered political violence (GPV) on the political ambition of future political prospects and those seeking to become active within the political field. Utilizing the research question “How does the awareness of the impacts regarding gendered political violence affect social science students’ political ambitions?”, a quantitative survey experiment is conducted among Uppsala University students in Sweden. Contrary to the initial hypothesis (H1), exposure to the treatment condition on GPV impacts did not diminish political ambitions; instead, contrary effects were observed. Further findings suggested that women’s political ambitions might be more negatively affected compared to men’s, aligning with hypothesis H2 albeit without statistical significance. Surprisingly, men’s political ambitions appeared strengthened instead. Further robustness tests confirmed all these results to various extents. Serving as an initial exploration into this crucial subject, these results highlight the need for further investigation into GPV’s implications for political ambition and its gendered disparities, both in Sweden and abroad.

Gender, Race, Class and the Normalization of Women's Pelvic Pain

Stephanie Wilson (11038173) 22 July 2021 (has links)

This dissertation, broadly, examines how power dynamics manifest during clinical interactions related to vague and gendered medical symptoms, such as pelvic pain. To examine this issue, I approach my research questions through multiple methods including a critical discourse analysis of the medical discourse on pelvic pain, a survey experiment administered to healthcare workers in the US, and a narrative analysis of pelvic pain patient experiences. While the focus of this research is on pelvic pain, the analyses presented here reach far beyond ideas of power dynamics and pelvic pain. Rather, the findings from this research speak to theoretical discussions medical sociologists have been having for decades. Specifically, findings provide new insight on: 1) the limits of evidence-based medicine as a biomedical paradigm, 2) how fundamental causes of health inequality intersect with each other as well as other factors, such as gender, important in predicting health outcomes and 3) how discussions of metamechanisms in fundamental cause theory can inform our understanding of the accumulation of cultural health capital. In providing such insight, this dissertation uses the case of pelvic pain to integrate multiple perspectives and theories in medical sociology to drive the field forward in a way that acknowledges the many ways power is simultaneously constituted in the clinical interaction. From the role of gender, race, and class in power relations, to the ways medical knowledge, discourse, and authority dictate the clinical interaction, this research covers a wide range of sociological theories and concepts. In doing so, this dissertation sheds new light on current understandings of power in the clinical interaction and its relationship to inequitable health outcomes in the US.
