Is there a European solidarity?: Attitudes towards fiscal assistance for debt-ridden European Union member statesLengfeld, Holger, Schmidt, Sara, Häuberer, Julia January 2015 (has links)
This paper analyses if European citizens are willing to show solidarity with debt-ridden EU member states during the recent crisis. Based on a theoretical concept comprehending four di-mensions of solidarity - generalised willingness to support, existence of social cleavages, rea-sons of supporting others, acceptance of conditions a crisis country has to meet to receive as-sistance - we derived hypotheses stating that the existence of a European wide solidarity is rather unlikely. We analysed data from two Eurobarometer surveys 2010 and 2011 and a unique survey conducted in Germany and Portugal in 2012. Descriptive and multilevel analyses indi-cated that in 2010 and 2011, a narrow majority of all EU citizens supported fiscal assistance for crisis countries, and socio-economic and cultural cleavages in attitudes regarding financial as-sistance for crisis countries were rather low. Findings from the two country comparison showed that the willingness to show solidarity was predominantly guided by moral reasoning instead of the respondent’s self-interest. However, German and Portuguese respondents disagree on austerity measures, with the exception of social spending cuts. Taken all together, we come to the conclusion that recent years have brought a new legitimacy to the use of EU bailout measures which are now a given European practice.

Towards sustainable consumption patterns : A market feasibility study for a peer-to-peer sharing platform at KTH / Mot hållbara konsumtionsmönster : En marknadsundersökningsstudie för en peer-to-peer-delningsplattform på KTHBarrios, Fernando January 2019 (has links)
Peer-to-peer sharing platforms appear as a valid option to stop excessive consumerism. The success of a peer-to-peer sharing platform at Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan university mostly depends on the capability to comprehend the potential users’ motives for engagement. To investigate the relative significance of consumer motives for and against this platform, a theoretical model based on a comprehensive set of potential consumer motives was developed. The model was validated by employing a survey of325 participants. Findings suggest ecological sustainability, sense of belonging, trust in other users, and familiarity as the four most important drivers and prerequisites of platform attitude and process risk concerns as the main barrier. Moreover, attitude shows the most significant effect on behavioral intention and is slightly influenced by reasons of age, gender, type of participant, and school to which the participant belongs. Services in general and study materials appear as the items with the highest number of potential consumers and suppliers; while the free system proves to be the preferred system. Based on the findings, recommendations for future research and implementation of the peer-to-peer platform are suggested.

Creating Supply Chain Resilience with Information Communication TechnologyGlassburner, Aaron 05 1900 (has links)
Supply chain resilience refers to the capability of a supply chain to both withstand and adapt to unexpected disturbances. In today's turbulent business environment, firms are continually seeking to create more resilience within their supply chain through increased information communication technology use and enhanced business-to-business relationships. The focus of this dissertation is the investigation of how information communication technology creates resilience at the differing process levels of supply chain operations. Past research into information communication technology use within supply chains has often been conducted at the macro-level of supply chain phenomena. As such, there is still much to understand about how decision-makers interact with information communication technology at the micro-level of supply chain decision-making. A more in-depth, broad coverage of this interaction will provide both practitioners and academics a better understanding of how to leverage information communication technology in achieving supply chain resilience. To meet this aim, this dissertation contains three essays that re-orient conceptual thinking about supply chain phenomenon, explore how advances in information communication technology influence business-to-business relationships, and identify how information communication technology effects the decision-making of supply chain managers.

Facilitating African Language translation in the South African Department of DefenceGoussard-Kunz, Irene Maria 30 June 2003 (has links)
This study aimed to determine whether the current African language translation facilitation course (ALTFC) held at the Directorate Language Services (D Lang) is in tune with contemporary trends in translator training, as well as the needs of the South African Department of Defence (DOD) and ALTFC candidates. In order to accomplish these aims, the research methodology was divided into a theoretical component in the form of a literature survey and an empirical component by means of questionnaire research. While the literature survey revealed that with the exception of using corpora of parallel texts, the ALTFC largely follows contemporary trends in translator training, the questionnaire research identified four problem areas, i.e. feedback on practical work, the time factor, the candidates' English proficiency and teacher enthusiasm. Based on the theoretical and empirical findings, four new ALTFC models were developed. / Linguistics / MA (Linguistics)

Information Technology Outsourcing in Large Companies in Sweden : A Perspective on Risks, Relationships and Success FactorsHodosi, Georg January 2017 (has links)
This thesis investigates large private companies in Sweden that have outsourced their information technology (IT). A considerable proportion of IT outsourcing (ITO) is unsuccessful. For IT service buyers, this could cause IT that does not fully work, entailing problems with the network, application, infrastructure and security, with serious consequences such as a loss of customers’ confidence and significantly increased costs. Therefore, the main research goal was to analyse and define ways to improve ITO for buyer organizations. This main research goal was accomplished through three research goals that are the followings: 1) To develop a method for risk assessment in IT outsourcing; 2) To identify the important factors in IT outsourcing relationship; and 3) To identify the success factors in IT outsourcing. The research strategies applied in conducting this research were design science research and survey research. To achieve the first research goal, a method was developed for assessing the ITO risks, including support for mitigating these risks. This method could help both researchers and practitioners in estimating the ITO risks and in this way improve ITO. An application based on the developed method was used to facilitate the testing of this method by several ITO decision makers in large companies concerning its usability, correctness and functionality. Moreover, a study was performed to explore ITO decision makers’ acceptance of the developed method and their use of it for assessing the ITO risks. The second research goal investigated how to improve service buyers’ ITO relationship with their providers. A well-working ITO relationship is a critical determinant of successful ITO and is relevant to the whole ITO life cycle. This research goal was achieved by identifying and analysing the most important factors in ITO relationships, including a prioritized list of those factors that are highly recommended for use in creating and maintaining a good ITO relationship. The third research goal examined how to improve ITO by identifying and prioritizing the success factors (SFs) in ITO. This research identified the ITO SFs in large companies and provided a prioritized list of them to be applied in these companies with a description of the value that they could create from implementation during the ITO life cycle. Moreover, the SFs identified in large companies were compared with those identified in medium-sized companies, which could give an indication to the researchers in this field that company size matters in regard to the implementation order of the identified SFs. In summary, the research presented in this thesis contributes with: 1) a method for assessing the risks of outsourcing IT and, in the case that IT has been outsourced, suggested ways to mitigate them; 2) the important factors that could improve ITO relationships and 3) a prioritized list of success factors that could improve IT outsourcing.

Vzdělávání rodičů v problematice drogové závislosti dětí - projekt kvantitativního průzkumu / Educating Parents in Children's Drug Addiction Problems - A Quantitative Survey ProjectHojerová, Eva January 2011 (has links)
The focus of the thesis is on drug addiction prevention in families. Education in the family is seen here as one of the key factors preventing substance addiction. In my work, I emphasize the need to inform and educate parents in this area and put forward solutions in the form of the project "Educating Parents in Children's Drug Addiction Problems". The purpose of the project is to publish a handbook for parents titled "Do You Know About Drugs What Your Child Does?" The publication will provide parents with basic information about drug addiction. In addition to theoretical knowledge about drugs, parents will also be offered practical advice and guidance on how to prevent potential problems with drugs in their children, on how to react when they learn about the child's experimentation with drugs and, last, but not least, how to act in the situation when they find out that their child is already drug-addicted. Prior to writing the handbook, quantitative survey of parents has been undertaken to map the situation in the area of drug addiction prevention in families. The aim is to include the results of the survey in the handbook in such a way that, e.g., its text, in some parts, will give details to the explanation of the problematic phenomena exposed by the survey. The survey is one part of an entire...

Exploring a combined quantitative and qualitative research approach in developing a culturally competent dietary behavior assessment instrumentJones, Willie Brad 22 June 2009 (has links)
Cultural competence is widely recognized as an essential strategy for reducing health disparities. As the United States' population becomes increasingly ethno-culturally diverse, these disparities are becoming even more pronounced. One particular challenge in this regard concerns overweight/obesity prevalence among American adults, as a disproportionately high number of racial and ethnic minority adults are classified as overweight or obese. Dietary behavior assessments are often utilized by health and human services professionals to obtain the data necessary to promote goals such as the reduction and elimination of overweight/obesity across all ethno-cultural groups.
The primary objective of this research study was to develop, test, and evaluate a culturally-competent dietary behavior assessment instrument by effectively synthesizing qualitative methods from Cognitive Anthropology with appropriate survey research and quantitative statistical methods. Specifically, a quantitative methods triangle of hierarchical cluster analysis, binary logistic regression, and Poisson regression in conjunction with the free listing qualitative research technique from Cognitive Anthropology was explored as a possible combined methodological approach for researchers and public health professionals wishing to develop a comprehensive understanding of dietary behaviors at the local community level.
Binary logistic regression and Poisson regression enabled the relationship between selected food categories and certain demographic/cultural indicators to be modeled, while hierarchical cluster analyses enabled modeling of the distinct patterns of food category groupings that comprise individuals' regular diet. Additionally, initial qualitative analyses of the raw data promoted an understanding of the influence that the local fast food and dine-in restaurant environment has on the dietary behaviors of the target population.
The results of this study suggest that a quantitative methods triangle of hierarchical cluster analysis, binary logistic regression analysis, and Poisson regression analysis founded upon qualitative research principles has potential for use as a combined methodological approach for researchers and public health professionals wishing to develop a comprehensive understanding of dietary behaviors at the local community level. By employing these techniques, researchers can analyze individual dietary behaviors and eating patterns from a multifaceted perspective. In turn, public health professionals can develop community-based, cross-culturally relevant programs and interventions that are equally effective across all ethno-cultural groups in their target population.
