"I can tell a story that my dads friend tell me" : A corpus- and interview-based study on grammar education, with focus on verb forms.

Lorenzi, Mikaela, Bergström, Sofia January 2015 (has links)
This study consists of two methods: textual analysis and interviews, which are based on text from The Uppsala Learner English Corpus (ULEC), and teachers as interview objects. The textual analysis investigates errors made by students in year seven and year nine, regarding the construction of different verb forms in written English essays. A potential difference between errors made in year seven and nine is also examined. Moreover, the interview based analysis investigates professional junior high school teachers’ teaching methods and attitudes towards grammar. The errors investigated in the textual analysis are compared with the responses of the teachers’ perception of common errors in verb forms made by their students. The textual analysis showed that the most common errors made regard spelling within the verb phrase, auxiliary verbs, subject-verb agreement, and irregular verbs, and that year seven had a higher frequency of errors than year nine in most categories, even if the results differed inconsiderably. The analysis of the interviews of the teachers found that teachers, in general, enjoy grammar, and aim to have a student-centered approach, however, the teachers testify of characteristics of traditional teacher-centered grammar teaching. It is reasoned that traditional teacher-centered grammar teaching is fundamentally established, where teachers today appear not to acquire the tools to move away from the teacher-centered approach onwards to a student-centered grammar teaching. We reason that the education of L2 teachers needs to be reformed and provide tools to help teachers achieve a student-centered approach, and therein enable students to become more successful in grammar.

Nejčastější chyby, které čeští studenti dělají v angličtině, a jejich náprava / Common mistakes Czech students make in English and their Remedial Treatment

Ganev, Ondřej January 2012 (has links)
Common mistakes Czech students make in English represent the main topic of the presented master thesis. The theoretical part mainly deals with the presentation of various TEFL (Teaching English as Foreign Language) methods. Moreover, they are discussed from several perspectives, including techniques, strategies and principles while using the particular method, the role of the teacher, his or her relationship with students, and especially the response to errors within each of the methods. The purpose of presenting TEFL methods is to show also the connection between mistakes and methods themselves. Concerning the area of mistakes and their corrections, we focus on the classification of mistakes and their division. The practical part is based on various illustrations of mistakes from students' writing assignments. These mistakes are divided into four major classes, including grammar, spelling, wrong word and word order. The thesis also deals with the remedial treatment which may hopefully reduce the number of possible mistakes. The aim of the thesis is to compare the level of students' English language knowledge at the Secondary School of Tourism in Prague where the author works as an English teacher.

Estudo sobre a formação de competências do estudante de graduação em enfermagem na vivência (simulada) em uma clínica de enfermagem / Study on nursing students` competence building through (simulated) experience in a nursing clinic

Machado, Valéria Bertonha 03 August 2007 (has links)
The study aims at addressing, according to the faculty view, the competencies they consider important in a nursing student formation when developing simulated teaching in the clinic; at identifying the strategies or mechanisms adopted to help students to develop these competencies and finally at interfering, based on results, with the transformation of this teaching process taking into consideration the relationship between a Political-Pedagogic Project (PPP) and the student`s profile proposed by the Brazilian Syllabus Guidelines. This research applies the case-study qualitative approach, methodologically composed of two phases: analysis of interviews carried out with eight faculty members, according to Minayo referential, and interpretation of answers given by the focal group with hermeneutics dialect resources. Data analysis and interpretation were supported by two great sources. The first encompasses the analytical category: \"The nurse professional formation process\". The second is composed of the following empirical categories based on the speech of the interviewed subjects: interpretative analysis was oriented by the axis of the structural determinants, namely the Political-Pedagogic Project and the Brazilian Syllabus Guidelines; the Simulated Teaching Unit (Nursing Clinic) was considered as the Particular Determinant and the teaching Strategies (Work Tool) and Competencies (Work Product) - resulting from the interpretations of the Focal Group, produced according to the collective subject, that is, the collaborators after a group reflexion - as the Unique Determinants. The results made possible to identify the competencies faculty members considers important for the nurse formation, (competency: technical-scientific, ethical, political, managerial, relational/emotional, development of critical thinking) and also showed that the technical competency is very well acquired and that all subjects know what strategy to us to develop them. However, the other listed competencies are idealized and constantly changing. Regarding the development of competencies, faculty members should continually develop their own competencies to meet the requirements of the Brazilian Syllabus Guidelines and the Institution`s Political-Pedagogic Project and also, these competencies must be acquired first by faculty members so that they can help students to develop them

The methodology used here was the qualitative research, taking comprehension of the facts on the participants perspective into consideration and describing the process to apply the "Aprender a Empreender" course in the management of small businesses. The study was based on the participants data analysis which during their education process in the classroom developed different activities for their knowledge construction, among them the writing of a "letter to a friend", in which they described their perceptions on the course and reported that it granted them a new way to look over their business, helped fix what was learned, enabled them to get back to studies, and that the course is applicable to their lives. 60 (sixty) "letters to a friend" written by people who took part in the "Aprender a Empreender" course in five cities of the state of São Paulo, between January and April in 2010, were analyzed. Regardless the limitations of this research, the results obtained led to the conclusion that the course applied in the presence-required modality, combining procedures experienced and the use of technological resources, it can be regarded as an efficient method to teach adults who need fast and practical orientation to solve their problems. When the participants are interested in the theme and they become motivated to learn, they share experiences with the group, feel valued, learn with each other and with their examples.

Robertsson, Joacim, Bruneflod, Tobias January 2007 (has links)

This report presents the use of questions by both teachers and students in chemistry class. Both students and teachers have been observed during 24 lessons, both theoretical and practical. In addition, interviews have been made with the teachers and the students have answered a questionnaire. The result show that a high number of questions are asked, more than one per minute and that both teachers and students ask the same amount of questions. This contradicts earlier findings were teachers questions dominate. Another significant finding is that the distribution of questions over time is very similar between teachers and students. In a comparison between different teachers the conclusions can be drawn that the amount of questions asked in a classroom correlates more to the specific teacher than any other factor. This study also shows that both teachers and students are satisfied with the dialog and that the socio-cultural theories about dialogue base teaching have been assimilated into the Swedish classroom.
