Development of Effective Algorithm for Coupled Thermal-Hydraulics – Neutron-Kinetics Analysis of Reactivity TransientPeltonen, Joanna January 2009 (has links)
Analyses of nuclear reactor safety have increasingly required coupling of full three dimensional neutron kinetics (NK) core models with system transient thermal-hydraulics (TH) codes. To produce results within a reasonable computing time, the coupled codes use different spatial description of the reactor core. The TH code uses few, typically 5 to 20 TH channels, which represent the core. The NK code uses explicit node for each fuel assembly. Therefore, a spatial mapping of coarse grid TH and fine grid NK domain is necessary. However, improper mappings may result in loss of valuable information, thus causing inaccurate prediction of safety parameters. The purpose of this thesis is to study the sensitivity of spatial coupling (channel refinement and spatial mapping) and develop recommendations for NK-TH mapping in simulation of safety transients – Control Rod Drop, Turbine Trip, Feedwater Transient combined with stability performance (minimum pump speed of recirculation pumps). The research methodology consists of spatial coupling convergence study, as increasing number of TH channels and different mapping approach the reference case. The reference case consists of one TH channel per one fuel assembly. The comparison of results has been done under steady-state and transient conditions. Obtained results and conclusions are presented in this licentiate thesis.

Finance and power : Strategies of Chaumont family in France and Lorraine during the XVIIIth century, from the war of the Spanish succession until the French RevolutionPakin, Daniel 05 October 2016 (has links)
Chaumont family, "bourgeois" from Namur won only depreciated bills of exchange by suppliing French armies during the wae of the Spanish succession in Flanders. They emigrated to Paris, around 1719 and speculated successfully during the 'Mississipi Bubble" to build a real estate fortune in France and buy offices in the senior royal administration. They also built a network of matrimonial alliances with rich, new ennobled families. The eldest son was related by marriage with Philibert Orry, future minister of State. He was appointed chancelor of king Stanislas, Duke of Lorraine and Bar. He stayed at this responsability for twenty-nine years and ruled the duchies for the sake of the French kingdom. The whole family benefited from the lasting appointment to obtain offices and prebends from Lorraine in the Church or the Army or the Administration. The third generation was installed in the high society, close to the royal power. Two branches still continued the family line as royal provincial intendant or director of the Roads Department or bishop. The French revolution disrupted the family's rise. THe prominent, close the king functions were definitively weakened. We highlighted the means used by the Chaumont family to realize their fortune and a very kick social rise over three generations; how this family was only one example among others but also why it was a particular case.

Variace frakcionálních procesů / Variation of Fractional ProcessesKiška, Boris January 2022 (has links)
In this thesis, we study various notions of variation of certain stochastic processes, namely $p$-variation, pathwise $p$-th variation along sequence of partitions and $p$-th variation along sequence of partitions. We study these concepts for fractional Brownian motions and Rosenblatt processes. A fractional Brownian motion is a Gaussian process and it has been intensively developed and studied over the last two decades because of its importance in modeling various phenomena. On the other hand, a Rosenblatt process, which is a non- Gaussian process that can be used for modeling non-Gaussian fluctuations, has not been getting as much attention as fractional Brownian motion. For that reason, we concentrate in this thesis on this process and we present some original results that deal with ergodicity, $p$-variation, pathwise $p$-th variation along sequence of partitions and $p$-th variation along sequence of partitions. A Thermochronological Investigation of Orogenic Architecture, Kinematics, and Tectonic-Climatic Interactions within the St. Elias Orogen, AlaskaBerger, Aaron Louis 15 April 2008 (has links)
The kinematics and architecture of orogenic systems may be heavily influenced by climate, but little research has focused on the long-term effects of glacial erosion on orogenesis. Low-temperature thermochronometry and subsidiary structural, earthquake relocation, and offshore seismic reflection data from the St. Elias orogen are the basis for a new architectural model and demonstrate an association between glacial denudation and orogenic evolution. These data show that exhumation and deformation within the St. Elias orogen are focused across a thin-skinned fold and thrust belt on the windward flank, whereas the leeward flank functions as a deformational backstop. A previously unrecognized structure beneath the Bagley ice field separates these domains with south-side-up motion. This structure is interpreted to be a backthrust, making the orogen doubly-vergent. Suggestive of accelerated fault motion in response to climate change, bedrock cooling rates within the hanging wall of the backthrust and across the entire subaerial wedge accelerated ~ten-fold coeval with the onset of intense glacial conditions. Within the orogenic wedge, the zone of highest Quaternary exhumation (5 km/myr (±25%)) is focused around a narrow zone where the glacial equilibrium line altitude (ELA) intersects mean topography. This zone of rapid exhumation, not present prior to the onset of intense glacial conditions, cuts across the structural trend of the orogen and is more narrowly focused than the zone of orographic precipitation. Augmented glacial erosion around glacial ELA also coincided with a regional shift in deformation away from prominent forethrusts including the North American-Yakutat terrane suture (Chugach St. Elias fault) and the seaward deformation front (Pamplona zone). Accelerated denudation across the subaerial wedge thus appears to have forced the redistribution of strain along the backthrust and a series of forethrusts that lie beneath the zone of highest glacial flux, which in turn are systematically truncated by the backthrust. In a cause and effect response, the expansion of glaciers therefore appears to have resulted in an orogen scale structural reorganization and a narrowing of the orogenic wedge to preserve topographic slope. The focusing of long-term erosion around glacial ELA and the structural response of the orogenic wedge to Cenozoic climate change have not previously been observed in a real-world orogenic system and imply a high degree of coupling between climate and tectonics in this glacially-dominated orogen. / Ph.
