The theme of death in Italian art : the triumph of deathVülser, Ingrid. January 2001 (has links)
This paper focuses on the evolution of the theme the Triumph of Death, the representation of the personification of death and the dead in the late Middle Ages. The first part of this thesis represents different points of view of art historians and historians concerning the death and the afterlife. There follows a short description and analysis of the cultural environment especially regarding literature which closely relates to the visual art and the representation of death. The last part describes three themes of death and the most important representations in frescoes, panels, bas-reliefs of the Triumph of Death evincing the main idea and the underlying structure and composition. Two different ways of representation can be distinguished: the Triumph of Death in the shape of the apocalyptic rider as appearing in the Revelation of Saint John the Evangelist and the Triumph of Death based on Petrarch's poem the Trionfi.

Essensen av sjuttio års ledarskapsforskning / The essence of seventy years of leadership researchJohannesson, Louice January 2014 (has links)
In this systematic literature review, the fundamental themes in leadership research between the years 1940 and 2010 were examined, and if there is any difference between older (1940-1999) and younger leadership research (2000-2010). And what kind of articles where they and written by whom? The analysis consists of 2815 articles; focus was the content of the titles. Based on them the analysis was 3910 words, as resulted in nine fundamental themes from the mentioned period of time. The themes were: (1) Individualistic/personal, (2) top-down/hierarchical, (3) development/ enhancement, (4) communication, (5) social, (6) employeeship, (7) values, (8) emotions, and (9) situation/context. Top-down/ hierarchical is more frequent in the older research than in the younger where employeeship is more common. The main result is that employeeship is the most common theme. The U.S. was behind most of the articles and the quantitative method is dominating the research arena, and the male researchers retain the hegemonic position in leadership research.

Experiences of Women Leaders in MéxicoMoreno, Ana 2012 August 1900 (has links)
This qualitative study sought to understand better the experiences of women leaders in México, a predominantly male-dominated culture. Seven women leaders were interviewed. They shared personal experiences, reflections, feelings, ideas, and actions related to their leadership positions in different arenas, such as corporate, political, academic, and non-profit organizations. Phenomenology was the most appropriate tye of inquiry for this study because its objective was to develop a deeper understanding of the lived experiences of women in leadership positions in México, a predominantly male-dominated culture. I conducted a thematic analysis of the transcribed interviews to discover commonalities among the experiences of the participants. A list of preliminary themes emerged. I made follow-up contacts with the participants to verify the findings, and themes were revised and accepted.
The analysis revealed insights into six themes: preparation, innate characteristics, move under principles and ethical values, the job itself is very important, to find a balance between personal and professional time as a goal, and benefits that the leadership position give to them. A total of five subthemes emerged under four of the six themes: academic, the women leaders want to have an impact in social responsibility activities, they like challenges and being competitive, independence, and recognition.

Representations of the Outsider in David Bowie’s Glam Period and its Continuation Through Punk, Goth, and Emo: Thematic, Aesthetic, and Subcultural ConsiderationsHall, Nerhys January 2015 (has links)
Popular music artists portray a variety of themes through the aesthetics of their music, lyrics, and music videos. One theme in particular that began with David Bowie’s glam period (1972-1974) and the creation of his Ziggy Stardust persona is the notion of the Outsider. Bowie not only portrayed an Outsider character, but also spoke to and for those who felt like Outsiders. Punk, goth, and emo bands that were influenced by Bowie took this social stance to speak to and for their own versions of the Outsider. Drawing from subcultural theory, music analysis, and music video analysis, and using Bowie as a benchmark and influence, I explore how several other bands portray the Outsider in their music, lyrics, and music videos.

Towards a culturally identifiable architectureChang, Chian-Yeun 14 October 2005 (has links)
This study proposes a systematic approach for investigators to judge how architecture of a given cultural group can be considered as culturally identifiable. More specifically, it proposes the steps in unveiling the relationships between chosen core elements of cultural distinctness and various design patterns. The suggested sources of core elements are political, social/behavioral, and economic influences on architectural design and approaches to create architectural signs.
It is presupposed that a design pattern is considered culturally identifiable when important core elements are communicated via noticeable signs. The communication is perceived from a semiotic analogy of architectural signs, whereby the importance of one core element over the other is identified by the investigator through research into the cultural context under study.
A case study on China's architecture is presented to illustrate these steps and test the proposed hypotheses. The steps are so designed that testing the relevance of core elements to architectural signs is essential. Forty-six sample buildings selected from China served as stimulus materials in the case study. These building patterns were rated as different types of signs on the basis of the core elements elicited from China's present-day culture. These buildings also were judged in a survey by forty-four Chinese students and their spouses at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University who represent samples of overseas Chinese laypersons.
The findings show that survey results deviated significantly from the semiotic results as laypersons considered traditional architecture most representative of Chinese identity. The semiotic results show that culturally identifiable designs are the hybrid forms of traditional and modern architecture. Most laypersons ignored the relationships between their perception of distinct identity in architecture and core elements of economic meanings and sign-creation approaches. This deviation implies a significant cultural lag in perceiving distinct identity between professionals and laypersons, and led to modification of the presupposed hierarchical importance of core elements.
Through the case study and findings, this research illustrates the procedure by which investigators can determine from a specific range of cultural elements the most effective means of communication of identity. It enables the inclusion of core elements of popular culture in comparing various design patterns and in differentiating built forms of one culture from that of others. The study ends with the factors and suggestions that are related to communication of Chinese identity in architecture. / Ph. D.
