Experiencing literature – learning from experience: the application of neuroscience to literary analysis by example of representations of German colonialism in Uwe Timm’s Morenga

Allen, Heather 08 September 2011 (has links)
Is it probable that a reader can have an empathetic and learning experience of an historical event facilitated through text? Research in neuroscience indicates that the form of a text can trigger mirror neurons, enhancing empathy with the events and characters portrayed and enabling introspective learning through stimulation of the default state network in a reading brain. Narrative elements in historical and fictional literature are analyzed for their potential in facilitating the stimulation of these states. The historical fiction novel Morenga by Uwe Timm is analyzed in order to deduce what a reader neurologically experiences in relation to the text and the historical event portrayed in the novel during the reading process. The probability of the reader experiencing empathy and learning through text so that their perspectives on inter-textual and extra-textual similar events are affected is then developed.

(1973) by Ulrich Plenzdorf and Red (2001) by Uwe Timm. The first one is of the ancient GDR, and the second one, although written and published post-reunification, is of the Federal Republic of Germany. Both texts show the conflict of the young with the generation of their parents and society in the period around 1968. In spite of alleged contrary ideologies and politics – market economy versus socialism – one establishes many similarities in the development of these generations on both sides of the iron curtain. While the narrator of The new sufferings of young W. makes his speech after death, the narrator of Red (2001) has his entire life flash through his thoughts in his last instances between accident and death. Their narratives result in a reflection on life, which presents the inter-relationships between the generations of the 20th century in both German States. The choice of a post mortem perspective by the authors can be explained by the rhetoric advantages, which has a dead voice with the reader: the authority of whom has finished his life on earth and has experience to transmit something to those who stay.
