Translation at inter-governmental organizations the set of skills and knowledge required and the implications for recruitment testing

Se investiga la importancia relativa de cada uno de 40 habilidades y de conocimientos que necesitan los traductores que trabajan en las organizaciones intergubernamentales, con enfoque en los exámenes de selección de nuevos traductores. En base de una encuesta de traductores y correctores en diferentes organizaciones, se producen jerarquías de habilidades-conocimientos específicas para cada organización. Los actuales exámenes de selección se analizan a la luz de dichas jerarquías con el fin de identificar las modificaciones que podrían permitir que las organizaciones reclutan los candidatos más adecuados para perfiles necesitados. Para examinar más en profundidad las implicaciones de estos resultados, se escribe un examen nuevo, más adecuado a las jerarquías identificadas, y se comparan el modelo de los exámenes actuales. Se demuestra empíricamente que tanto estudiantes de Máster y como profesionales de las organizaciones reciben notas significativamente diferentes en los dos exámenes. De ahí las implicaciones importantes para la formación de traductores / This study investigates the relative importance of 40 skills and knowledge required by translators at inter-governmental organizations from the perspective of recruitment testing. On the basis of a survey conducted of translators and revisers at various organizations, specific skills-knowledge hierarchies required at individual organizations are drawn up. Current testing practice is examined in the light of the hierarchies to identify adjustments that could be made to help organizations select the candidates with the profile they need. To examine the implications of the findings further, the performance of a group of translators on a traditional recruitment test is compared with their performance on a “profile-adapted” test that is designed on the basis of measurement theory. The findings also have implications for translator training.

Translation competence development among learners : a problem-solving perspective

In recent decades, the conceptualisation of translation competence and its development has attracted significant attention from translation researchers. Existing literature on translation competence is characterised by the prevalence of multi-componential models of translation competence, with inadequate attention paid to the interplay between competence components in the translation process. Therefore, this doctoral research sets out to re-conceptualise translation competence from a problem-solving perspective so as to understand translation competence and its development in the translation process. By re-defining and re-modelling translation competence with inspiration from problem-solving studies, this research proposes a conceptualisation of translation competence and its development that accommodates the translation process and the learning process. In order to validate the relevance of the proposed theoretical framework, a longitudinal study was conducted among a small group of Chinese students from an MA translation programme, using the translation task-based interview as the main research instrument. Findings from the empirical study have demonstrated the relevance and strength of the theoretical framework as well as revealing individual and shared paths of translation competence development among the learners. This research enriches the current understanding of translation competence and its development. It introduces a fresh perspective for conceptualising translation competence, proposes an effective instrument for empirical competence research, and identifies possible directions for further research. It also has practical implications for translation pedagogy, offering theoretical and empirical support for some recent approaches and trends in translator education and training.

Measuring the Effect of Translator Training and Language Education on Translation Competence

This study reviews concepts of bilingualism, summarizes various models of translation competency, and quantifies the difference of translation competency among students and graduates of Brigham Young University. By means of a survey about language history and a translation test from Spanish to English, data from 57 participants was collected and analyzed to measure the effect of formal language education and translation training. Despite numerous proposed models of translation competency (Wilss 1976, 1989; Koller, 1979; Krings, 1986; Lörscher, 1991; Toury, 1991; Pym, 1991, 1992, 2003, 2013; Kiraly, 1995; Fraser, 1996; Neubert, 2000; Kelly, 2005; Hague et al., 2011; Pietrzrak, 2015), few have attempted to quantify differences in translation competency. Those that have measured translation competency have either focused on younger speakers (Malakoff & Hakuta, 1991; Valdés, 2003), untrained heritage speakers (Gasca Jiménez, 2019), or established language professionals (PACTE, 2017). This study sought to quantify differences in translation competency of university students; the results show considerable differences according to specific variables such as progress in the Spanish Translation program, the number of Spanish classes taken, and native language when comparing number of errors, number of critical errors, mistranslation errors, and grammar and spelling errors. By identifying the strengths and needs of different groups of bilingual English and Spanish speakers, this study hopes to improve translation training programs and inform language industry practices.

El perfil profesional del gestor de proyectos de traducción en el mercado laboral de Lima / The professional translation project manager profile in the working market of Lima

Existe escasa información sobre el gestor de proyectos de traducción en el mercado laboral limeño. La falta de investigaciones acerca del perfil de gestores de proyectos se debe a que es un tema relativamente reciente comparado con otros campos de la traducción. Además, los pocos estudios realizados en Lima se enfocan más en el perfil de un traductor. Por ello, la presente investigación se centrará en describir el perfil profesional del gestor de proyectos de traducción en el mercado laboral de Lima. Se conducirán entrevistas a los gestores de proyectos para analizar las competencias que poseen y a los empleadores de las agencias de traducción para conocer los requisitos que buscan al contratar a un gestor. De la misma forma, se plantea hacer un análisis de los anuncios o convocatorias de trabajo para obtener más información con respecto a las competencias de los gestores de proyectos de traducción. / The existing information regarding the translation project manager in the Lima labor market is somewhat limited. There seems to be scarce research on the project managers' profile since it is considered a relatively recent topic compared to other translation fields. In addition, the few studies carried out in Lima focus more on the profile of a translator. Therefore, this research study will describe the professional profile of the translation project manager in the labor market of Lima. Interviews will be conducted to project managers in order to analyze their competencies, and to translation agencies' employers so as to find out their hiring requirements for a project manager. Por muchos años, la traducción inversa se ha ignorado dentro de los estudios de traducción. Al considerarse una tarea imposible y no recomendable, muchas instituciones internacionales han prohibido esta práctica. Sin embargo, en Perú, donde los ciudadanos no son nativos de una lengua extranjera como el inglés, surge una necesidad de tener profesionales que puedan realizarla. Como resultado, las universidades que ofrecen la carrera de Traducción e Interpretación Profesional (TIP) brindan cursos de traducción inversa diseñados para capacitar a los estudiantes en la producción de textos en lengua extranjera y, respecto a la universidad observada, desarrollar además su seguridad para efectuar esta tarea. Debido a que la seguridad comprende los sentimientos que experimentan los estudiantes cuando juzgan sus capacidades de traducción, y al pertenecer estos juicios a la autoeficacia, el objeto de estudio de esta investigación es la autoeficacia en traducción inversa. Si bien existen estudios que analizan la relación entre autoeficacia, competencia traductora y traducción, resulta necesario profundizar en la implicancia de estos dos primeros conceptos en la traducción inversa. Por ello, esta investigación busca explorar los factores que influyen en la construcción de la autoeficacia sobre traducción inversa, identificar la incidencia de la autoeficacia respecto al dominio del inglés en el desempeño dentro del curso de Traducción Inversa 1 (Inglés) y, finalmente, describir cómo el dominio de la competencia traductora interviene en el logro del curso. A partir de entrevistas a estudiantes TIP en Lima, se identificó que la autoeficacia y la competencia traductora influyen en su desempeño. / For many years, translation into the foreign language has been ignored in the field of translation studies. Since it is considered an impossible and non-recommended task, many international institutions have banned this practice. However, in Peru, where its citizens are not native speakers of a foreign language like English, there is a need for professionals who can translate into this language. As a result, universities offering the Professional Translation and Interpreting program (TIP) provide courses of translation into the foreign language designed to train students to produce texts in this language, and, regarding the university observed, to also develop their confidence to perform this task. Since confidence is one of the feelings the students experience when they judge their translation skills, and self-efficacy involves these judgements, self-efficacy in translation into the foreign language is the object of this study. Even though there are studies that analyze the relationship between self-efficacy, translation competence, and translation, it is necessary to further examine how these first two concepts affect translation into the foreign language. Therefore, this study aims to explore the different factors that influence the construction of self-efficacy concerning Spanish into English translation, to identify the impact of self-efficacy on English proficiency regarding the students’ performance in their first Spanish into English translation course, and finally, to describe how the mastery of translation competence affects the success of said course. Based on interviews with TIP students in Lima, self-efficacy and translation competence were found to have an effect on the students’ performance. / Tesis

Ensino de interpretação simultânea na graduação: uma análise de corpora de aprendizes / Interpreting training in undergraduate programs: learners corpora study

O ensino de Interpretação em universidades brasileiras tem crescido a cada ano. No entanto, pouco se sabe a respeito dos métodos utilizados por professores de interpretação, que normalmente reproduzem a maneira como aprenderam ou utilizam exemplos de sua prática na profissão. Este trabalho pretende dar um passo em direção à pesquisa em formação de intérpretes, apresentando a discussão sobre o ensino de interpretação ser precedido pela interpretação consecutiva. Utilizando as metodologias de Linguística de Corpus, que investiga o produto de interpretações de alunos, em interação com as Entrevistas Retrospectivas, que investiga o processo de interpretar desses mesmos alunos, todos de um curso de Graduação em Tradução e Interpretação da cidade de São Paulo, demonstraremos as diferenças e semelhanças entre alunos iniciantes e concluintes, em relação aos padrões linguísticos produzidos e parâmetros que nos ajudam a avaliar a qualidade de sua produção, encontrados no CEIS Corpus de Ensino de Interpretação Simultânea. Os resultados demonstram que a interpretação consecutiva não é pré-requisito para a interpretação simultânea. Na triangulação entre produto e processo, observamos que os processos cognitivos envolvidos em cada modalidade da interpretação são os fatores que influenciam sua produção enquanto aprendizes, e não a desverbalização ou análise do texto de partida. É necessário, portanto, pensarmos no desenvolvimento de um currículo que promova a formação do intérprete nos modos de simultânea e consecutiva paralelamente. Ao final, sugerimos aplicações da Linguística de Corpus para pesquisas com o CEIS e sua utilização para melhores práticas educacionais na formação de intérpretes. / Interpreting education has widened its scope in Brazilian universities year after year. However, the methods for teaching used by interpreting teachers are not very known, leading them to reproduce the way they have been taught or examples of their professional practice. This work aims at opening up the research path to interpreting education, discussing if consecutive should be a pre-requisite to simultaneous. Corpus Linguistics is one of the methodologies for this study, to investigate the production of interpreting students, in an interaction with another methodology, the Retrospective Interviews, which investigates interpreting processes. The subjects of this study are interpreting students from an undergraduate Translation & Interpretation program from São Paulo, Brazil. In this study, we show the similarities and differences of linguistic patterns produced by beginners and veteran students. In addition, we provide the corpus analysis of previously established parameters to quality assessment of students production at CEIS Simultaneous Interpreting Learners Corpora (Corpora de Ensino de Interpretação Simultânea). Results show consecutive interpreting teaching is not a pre-requisite to simultaneous interpreting. In the triangulation across product and process, we find out that the cognitive processes evolved in interpreting modes are the factors that influence learners production, covering the effects of deverbalization or source text analysis. It is demanding, though, to develop the interpreting curriculum to promote simultaneous and consecutive teaching in parallel. Last, but not least, we suggest Corpus Linguistics use and application to CEIS expansion and optimal educational practices for interpreting teaching.

Bakgrund: Managementkoncept, som till exempel lean, behöver anpassas för att passa en viss organisations unika förutsättningar. Översättningsteori är ett medel för anpassning av managementkoncept mellan olika kontexter men i forskningen är det främst översättning till en kontext som har undersökts. Vad som händer om organisationen i fråga är diversifierad är i stort förbisett i forskningen. Det är därmed intressant att undersöka hur diversifiering påverkar översättningen och om det kan vara en anledning till att många implementationer, och översättningar, av managementkoncept misslyckas. Syfte: Syftet med studien är att öka förståelsen för översättning vid implementeringen av lean i en tjänsteorganisation med diversifierad verksamhet. För att uppnå studiens syfte har vi studerat vilken översättningskompetens som i organisationen upplevs vara av vikt vid implementeringen av lean i en diversifierad tjänsteorganisation och hur kompetensen anpassas till de olika enheternas kontexter. Vidare har vilka översättningtyper som används vid implementeringen av lean i en diversifierad tjänsteorganisation och hur de anpassas till enheternas olika kontexter studerats.  Metod: Studien är en kvalitativ fallstudie med ett fenomenologiskt perspektiv med hermeneutisk tyngdpunkt. Det empiriska materialet samlades in genom semistrukturerade intervjuer vilka kompletterades med dokumentstudier. Materialet presenteras tematiskt och narrativt. Slutsats: Diversifiering behöver inte nödvändigtvis innebära problem för översättningen om översättningstyp och översättningskompetens är behovsstyrt. Däremot behöver hänsyn tas till tvärgående processer, vilka behöver ett helhetsfokus och en samstämmighet i hur lean används för att fungera kunddrivet och optimalt. / Background: Management concepts, such as lean, need adjustment to fit the unique circumstances of a certain organisation. Translation is a method of adapting management concepts between different contexts but research on the subject has mainly focused on the translation to a single context. The implications that diversification has for the translation to a certain organisation are largely overlooked. It is therefore relevant to study how diversification affects translation and if it can be a reason for the large number of failures in the implementation, and translation, of management concepts. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to increase the understanding of the translation that takes place when a diversified service organisation implements lean. To fulfill the purpose we have studied what translation competence that is experienced to be important in the organisation when lean is implemented in a diversified service organisation and how the competence is adapted to the different contexts within the organisation. Furthermore, we have studied which translation types that are used when lean is implemented and how they are adapted to the different contexts of a diversified service organisation. Method: This is a qualitative case study with phenomenological perspective that puts emphasis on hermeneutic context. Semi-structured interviews and document studies provided the empirical material for the study. The empirical material is presented in themes in a narrative way. Conclusion: Diversification per se does not have to imply any difficulties if the translation, in terms of translation type and -competence, is controlled by demand. Transverse processes on the other hand needs to be focused and a holistic approach and a consistency in how lean is used and applied is necessary to make them work in an optimal and customer driven way.

Смита «The Burial of Sophocles» полученная методика апробирована на бакалаврах-старшекурсниках направления «Лингвистика». / The paper aims at developing a methodology for teaching literary translation based on the text categories of theme, chronotope, and tonality. Within the translation of the first part of G. B. Smith’s poem “The Burial of Sophocles” into Russian, the resulting methodology was tested on senior bachelor students specialized on linguistics.

Investigating translation competence: a case study of undergraduates at Eduardo Mondlane University

Text in English / Undergraduate students at the Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) experience great difficulty in developing their translation competence during their training period. On the one hand, they show many signs of poor quality during their training when they accomplish practical translation assignments on and off-campus. On the other hand, the quality of the final work submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Bachelor Honours Degree (Licenciatura) suggests that most students fail to go beyond the minimum standards with regard to translation competence. Yet, comprehensive research aimed at understanding factors hindering translation competence at the UEM has been scanty. Besides, the few studies available have some significant lacunae, for they focus on Portuguese language development; are limited to error analysis, and often ignore students‟ perspectives. Consequently, the problem of finding a balanced approach to developing students‟ translation competence has remained unaddressed. Therefore, this study has been conducted with the purpose of investigating the translation competence of the UEM undergraduates in order to establish the major obstacles to their translation competence development, and consequently come up with suggestions for improving the current translator-training degree programme. The study design uses qualitative methods translated into a case study approach. First, questionnaire data is analysed to gain lecturers‟ and students‟ perspectives on translation competence at the UEM. Second, a students‟ error typology is developed following a macro- and micro-textual analysis of their translations. The study concludes that substandard bilingual skills, compounded by curricular, attitudinal/motivational, pedagogical and infrastructural/instrumental factors, negatively impact the students‟ development of translation competence at the UEM and that addressing these may pave the way towards improving the current translation-training programme. / Linguistics and Modern Languages / M.A. (Linguistics)
