Proměny obrazu druhého v českém cestopise dlouhého 19. století / Transfigurations of the image of the Other in Czech travelogues of the long 19th centuryHeller, Jan January 2017 (has links)
Transfigurations of the image of the Other in Czech travelogues of the long 19th Century Abstract of the dissertation thesis Mgr. et Mgr. Jan Heller The thesis focuses on constructions of the image of the Other in Czech travelogues of the 19th century. The travelogue is a peripheral literary genre, both an artistic text and a historical source, and thus enables the viewer to combine perspectives of literary criticism and historical anthropology. Special attention is paid to religious motifs owing mainly to the fact that this theme has been left out of focus in the present research thanks to the emphasis on the linguistic and historic character of the Czech national emancipation movement. The intention of the thesis is to describe literary techniques in the individual travelogues (direct representations, narrative strategies, topics, attributes of characters) and the function they serve in the building of the image of the Other and thus of the image of oneself at the same time. The goal ...

Identidade nacional Russa na literatura de viagem de Dostoiévski e Herzen / Russian national identity in Dostoyevskys and Herzens travel literatureMiranda, Lorena Leite 04 August 2014 (has links)
The dissertation aims at discussing Dostoevsky\'s political thinking. This shall be done through the comparative analysis of Winter Notes on Summer Impressions (1863) a collection of articles on the author\'s impressions after his first trip to Europe, in 1862 and another important travelogue that preceded Dostoevsky\'s, Letters from France and Italy (1855), by Aleksandr Gertsen (Herzen). These two works, whose authors take rather divergent positions within the Westernizers-Slavophiles spectrum in 19th century Russia, synthesize their political views, chiefly concerning the complex relationship between Russia and the West. My claim is that comparing Dostoevsky to one of the main spokesmen of his ideological antagonists may prove fruitful to understanding his political ideas

Du merveilleux au scientifique. Évolution de la représentation de l’Islande en France entre le XVIe et le XIXe siècles / From the wonderful to the scientific. Evolution of the representation of Iceland in France between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuriesReneteaud, Gaëlle 07 December 2015 (has links)
The Icelandic case it is about understanding how the image of a country can be shaped from elsewhere and by literary vectors. The image of Iceland in France has been shaped as a distant and mysterious country, a picture that still persists in the minds today, the island has preserved the element of the unknown and this enigmatic appearance, despite numerous contemporary sources. Cliches and stereotypes are still perpetuated today in the French collective imagination. The Iceland history remains relatively unknown, its artistic and cultural influence nevertheless confers a non-negligible presence on the international stage. This work not only intends to contribute to the construction of the history of the representations of Iceland, but it also aims to understand the political and economic conditions that allowed the spreading in Europe of the representations of this country, customs and culture of its inhabitants. This thesis also seeks to show how all collective image of Iceland have been interpreted in the history of representations. To meet the deficit of researches on Iceland and its representations, it will combine contextualized analysis of a literary corpus (travel stories and scientific articles) and an iconographic corpus (universal cosmographies) containing engravings and maps, to understand how it was possible to perceive a population and a territory that had long been designated as outside Europe.

Dominique Vivant Denon - od cest po Itálii k Louvru. K typologii cestopisu 18. století. / Dominique Vivant Denon - from travels in Italy to the Louvre Museum. Toward a typology of the 18th century travelogue.Balcarová, Eva January 2013 (has links)
DOMINIQUE VIVANT DENON - FROM TRAVELS IN ITALY TO THE LOUVRE MUSEUM. TOWARD A TYPOLOGY OF THE 18TH CENTURY TRAVELOGUE. Keywords: travelogue, 18th century, libertine culture, Italy, Egypte, Napoleon, Louvre. Number of characters: 121 846 (68 pages) The present thesis, Dominique Vivant Denon - From travels in Italy to the Louvre Museum is divided into two parts. The first one is a monograph on baron Vivant Denon, an important figure of the cultural life in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the author of Point de Lendemain, two travelogues, Voyage dans la Basse et la Haute Égypte and Voyage en Sicile, but, primarily, Napoleon's advisor in the field of fine art and the first director of The Louvre. The introductory pages of the thesis deal with the reception of Denon's works. There is a certain flux in the perception of Denon's oeuvre which has given rise to a range of interesting issues. One of them, the popularity of the libertine culture of pre-revolutionary France in the second half of the twentieth century, accounts for the fact that the novella Point de Lendemain is today the best known piece among Denon's extensive and multifaceted writings. A shift in the perception of the travelogue as a literary genre in our time, when the remotest of places are accessible in hours, may be...

Cesty do Utopie. K obrazu sovětského Ruska v prostředí československé kulturní levice v meziválečném období / Travels to Utopia. The Image of Soviet Russia within the Czechoslovak Cultural Left in the Interwar Period.Šimová, Kateřina January 2020 (has links)
The proposed dissertation is devoted to the relations of the Czechoslovak cultural left to Soviet Russia in the interwar period. It focuses on the image of Soviet Russia, pointing out that for many Czechoslovak leftist artists and intellectuals it served as a framework for their own vision of an ideal socio-political arrangements. In their view, the image of Soviet Russia stood out as a utopia in the sense that the sociologist Karl Mannheim attributes to this phenomenon. The dissertation follows the evolution of this utopian image among the Czechoslovak cultural left in the early 1920s, maps the changes in its thematic structure and motives and follows its disintegration against the ideological split of the Czechoslovak cultural left in the late 1930s. This development is perceived through the analysis of travelogues in which left-wing artists and intellectuals presented their immediate impressions and experiences from this country. The semiotic text analysis method is being used for this purpose. By analysing the confrontational and transformative functions of the utopian image of Soviet Russia, the dissertation attempts to clarify the attitude of Czechoslovak artists and intellectuals towards Soviet Russia in the context of the socio-political situation of the interwar period and in the broader...

Histoires et poétiques de la ville : représentations de Paris et Londres dans la deuxième moitié des Lumières / Histories and poetics of the city : representations of Paris and London in the second half of EnlightenmentGirleanu, Simona 26 June 2012 (has links)
The two great European capitals, Paris and London, are emblematic of the phenomenon of urban growth in the second half of the Enlightenment. The aim of our study, based on travelogues, architectural treatises and other writings on the two cities, is to elaborate a cultural and literary history of Paris and London by means of a multiple approach of the concept of representation which combines history and poetics. On the one hand, the analysis of the urban projects designed for Paris and London allows us to pinpoint two complementary manners of conceiving the city: public magnificence and public utility. Between these two poles emerge the concepts of embellissement and (urban) improvement which stem from an artistic and, respectively, technical urban imaginary. Moreover, the general debate on urban improvement fosters the emergence of a public sphere of science, demonstrated through two maps of places of science in Paris and London, conceived for the purposes of this study. On the other hand, a poetic approach of these urban representations shows the overlapping of aesthetic and epistemological issues. Firstly, the emergence of the architectural concept of character accounts for the link between the process of reading the city, the collaboration of arts at this time and urban improvement. Secondly, the comparative analysis of different types of urban descriptions allows us to demonstrate the circulation of several descriptive patterns, among which the pattern of the ideal city is the perfect embodiment of the subtle connections between urban forms and forms of discourse in the second half of the Enlightenment.
