The orchids Cyrtopodium saintlegerianum (epiphyte) and Epidendrum nocturnum (rupicola) occur in areas anthropized of cerrado and cerrado rupestre, respectively. The orchids posses mycorrhizal association with rhizoctonia-like and endophytic fungi. The identification of these fungi can be done by microscopic and morphological characters. Root infecting fungi also are utilized for in vitro symbiotic germination of orchid seeds, aiming the conservation of plant species and fungi. The objective of the present investigation was isolation and morphological characterization of mycorrhizal and endophytic fungi originating from roots of C. saintlegerianum and E. nocturnum, as well as symbiotic in vitro seed germination. Three isolates of Epulorhiza sp. from each one of C. saintlegerianum, and E. nocturnum and two of Rhizoctonia sp. from E. nocturnum were obtained. Also, two isolates of Xylaria sp. were obtained from roots of C. saintlegerianum. There were, however, differences among isolates Epulorhiza sp. of C. saintlegerianum and of the E. nocturnum, in relation to morphological and enzymatic characters. The fungus was localized in root tissues of both species by optical and scanning electronic microscopes. The seed viability was tested by tetrazolium chloride and found 80.3 and 32.33% viable embryos of C. saintlegerianum and E. nocturnum, respectively. There was no in vitro symbiotic germination of E. nocturnum due to low seed viability. Two experiments of symbiotic germination of C. saintlegerianum seeds were conducted, both under photoperiods of 16/8 h (light/dark) at 26°C ± 2°C. The treatments were two isolates of Xylaria sp., three plant pathogens (Rhizoctonia solani of common beans and R. oryzae of rice ), and three mycorrhiza of C. saintlegerianum, two of Cyrtopodium vernum, and one ofE. nocturnum. Of three culture media tested, germination was obtained only in oat meal agar culture. The isolate En07 of Rhizoctonia sp. from E. nocturnum was found better for seed germination with 81.64 and 90.73% of germination of experiments 1 and 2, respectively. One non-specific isolate, two plant pathogenic isolates and one specific isolate were efficient for seed germination of C. saintlegerianum. On the other hand, for symbiotic in vitro seed germination of C. saintlegerianum, there was no specificity between this orchid and only one rhizoctonia-like fungus. These results showed that C. saintlegerianum can be propagated utilizing different root infecting fungi, which facilitates future programs of reintroduction and commercialization of species.

Resource Recovery Through Halophyte Production in Marine Aquaponics: An Evaluation of the Nutrient Cycling and the Environmental Sustainability of Aquaponics

Boxman, Suzanne 23 November 2015 (has links)
Aquaculture, the farming of aquatic animals and plants, is an important component of global food production, which supplies a nutritious protein source for millions of people. Interest in improving the sustainability of aquaculture has led to the development of aquaponics in which fish production is combined with plant production to create zero-discharge systems. A need for more fundamental science and engineering research on marine aquaculture and growing interest in production of halophytes motivated this novel research on marine aquaponics. One objective was to evaluate the growth and nutrient removal capacity of halophytes in marine aquaponics. Bench-scale studies were conducted to determine the best methodology to grow the halophytes sea purslane (Sesuvium portulacastrum) and saltwort (Batis maritima). The results indicated these species were important for nitrogen removal and function well under varying conditions of flow rate, species, or plant density. A prototype commercial-scale marine aquaponic system was evaluated through regular collection of water quality and plant growth data over a 9 month period. The system had a total volume of 50 m3 and contained: a swirl separator, uplfow media filter, a moving bed bioreactor, 61.4 m2 of hydroponic growing area, and a sand filter. Water quality parameters measured included: total ammonia nitrogen (TAN), nitrite (NO2-), nitrate (NO3-), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), and volatile suspended solids (VSS). TAN and nitrite concentrations in the fish tank effluent ranged from 0.04 to 2.42 mg/L TAN and 0.07 to 14.7 mg/L NO2--N, respectively. Nitrate concentrations increased to a maximum of 120 ± 5.7 mg/L NO3--N during the first 119 days of operation. To provide greater control over nitrate concentrations, the sand filter was converted into a downflow submerged packed bed biofilter. This reduced concentrations to a mean of 27.5 ± 13.7 mg/L NO3--N during the last 3 months. Dried plant samples were analyzed for nitrogen and phosphorus content. Nutrient uptake by plants ranged from 0.06 to 0.87 g N/m2/d and 0.01 to 0.14 g P/m2/d. It was estimated 0.55 kg/m2 of plant biomass could be harvested every 28 days. Red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) were initially stocked at an average weight of 0.047 kg and grew to a harvestable size of 0.91 kg in approximately 12 months. A mass balance indicated that plants contributed to less than 10% of nitrogen and phosphorus removal and passive denitrification was the dominant nitrogen removal process. The second objective was to evaluate the environmental impact of aquaponics through life cycle assessment (LCA). LCAs were completed on freshwater aquaponic systems at commercial- and residential-scales. The system expansion method was used address co-production of 1 ton live-weight fish, recovered solids, plants, and water treatment. The results indicated that aquaponics contributed to significant water savings; however, aquaponics is subject to trade-offs from high energy use and the addition of industrial fish feeds. The methodology developed for freshwater aquaponics was applied to the prototype commercial-scale marine aquaponic system and was compared with two alternative scenarios of maximized plant production and a denitrification reactor with no plant production. The results indicated that a system with a denitrification reactor had the lowest environmental impact. Alternatively in the system with maximized plant production, the use of renewable energy sources would reduce the environmental impact and would contribute to greater water savings, while realizing the economic benefits of dual products. This is the first study to complete an in-depth evaluation of a commercial-scale marine aquaponic system and to evaluate aquaponics using LCA while accounting for the potential environmental offsets of multiple co-products.

The dissertation was motivated by the general idea that these movements are able to indicate the important role of music to the Brazilian society and the cultural profile of this nation, from 1958 to 1968. Larger stimulus, however, found specifically in: (i) the author's passion for these two musical styles; (ii) personal desire to add more academic work that al-ways current, i.e. graphical analysis to understand given time of a civilization; (iii) academic need to define procedures and analysis techniques for graphical vinyl record covers, long-playing ? based on industrial design techniques ? that went beyond a mere single, "liked", "cool", "cute". As specific objectives, it was defined: draw a panorama on the graphic-visual languages used by "capistas", i.e., those typographers, artists, graphic designers who designed and illustrated graphically this fascinating industrial product. Sought to contextualize the mus-ical style bossa-tropicalist and released and their productions for the covers of Bossa Nova and Tropic?lia, understanding the design of the image, from the adequacy in temporal context, demonstrating the importance of proper use of visual language in a record in terms of effects work that seeks to generate; social contribution and academically, various aspects of know-ledge. With that objective in mind, it was treated anterior and posterior aspects to customizing album covers ? as it was and as it became the relationship of production "capistas" with the concern on the use of the image. We seek to demonstrate the cultural and aesthetic mark left by these musical periods of the cover designs. We look for references, videos, websites, etc., in addition to data that substantiate this thesis through collaboration (via semi-structured in-terview: forms applied to a sample of twenty interviewees, including broadcasters, musicians, music teachers and music researchers in the city of Feira de Santana-BA); and graphical ana-lyses of the album covers designs from Bossa-nova e Tropica?lia; It was sought through me-thods of some theorists, a proprietary method and methods of research subjects, primarily dealing with aspects related to the project factors, types of designs, ideograms and linguistic techniques. We have specified how much the art of drawing and contemplate the disk cover suffered transformations, the advent of the LP to the Era of MP3, mentioning the losses and gains of LP cover designs, while the cultural representation of a time. And how this work may prove to contribute socially, academically and in didactic and knowledge linked to the thematic ordering here. We concluded this research in order to bring up the debate about the possible return of disk cover, and their designs, generating, especially in the music industry, the reflection on the design and making of same.

The biogeography and conservation status of the rocky plateaus of the northern Western Ghats, India

Thorpe, Christopher John January 2018 (has links)
Rocky plateaus are globally threatened ecosystems and the lateritic plateaus in northern section of the Indian Western Ghats/Sri Lanka Biodiversity Hotspot (NWG) are notable landscape features. The NWG are geologically distinct from and biologically isolated from the other two sections of the Western Ghats. The NWG is known to possess elevated levels of endemic flora their biotic relationships remain poorly understood. We present here the first quantitative multi-taxa comparative study of plateau fauna in the northern Western Ghats. Ants, water beetles and amphibians were selected for the comparison as they use different ecological resources from each other and at various times of year therefore may provide a wider representation of plateau usage. Distribution and endemism were expected to reflect distribution and isolation by plateau and inter-plateau environment related to elevational, latitudinal, climatic and land-use clines. The study explored patterns of amphibian, water beetle, ant and fungal distribution and sampling seasonal pools and terrestrial surfaces of 13 representative plateaus in western Maharashtra, with sites ranging from 67-1179 m and across 2° of (sub) tropical latitude. Distribution of all taxonomic groups was spatially non-random at all levels of organisation and across all spatial scales. At the macroscale assemblages differed significantly with climate related to elevation, latitude but at a local scale land-use and microhabitat availably had an impact. Ants displayed a large seasonal assemblage variation, responding to seed availability. Water beetles the ants (combined survey data) were the best surrogates for all taxa data with amphibians the weakest representatives. Infection by the fungal pathogen, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, was extensive but less intense below the escarpment. We report the first records of infection in 13 endangered and data deficient amphibian species in the Western Ghats. The plateaus of western Maharashtra have recently been recognised as fragile and threatened ecosystems most still lack adequate statutory protection. In the absence of peer reviewed comparative data, the importance of individual sites is difficult to demonstrate hampering evidence-based conservation decisions.

Oviposition site preference of lacewings in maize ecosystems and the effect of Bt maize on Chrysoperla pudica (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) / Rozelle Keulder

Keulder, Rozelle January 2010 (has links)
Resistance development and possible non–target effects have been of concern since the first deployment of genetically modified crops with insecticidal properties. It is especially at the third trophic level and with important predators such as lacewings (Chrysoperla spp.) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) where negative effects of Cry 1Ab protein could have adverse effects in agro–ecosystems. Monitoring of the effect of genetically modified Bt maize on non–target organisms is required by law in South–Africa. Neuroptera are excellent indicators of environmental and habitat transformation, and also include key species for signifying areas and faunas that require priority protection. Monitoring techniques, especially for insect eggs, are often labour intensive and time consuming. A study was conducted to determine the preferred oviposition site of Chrysoperla spp. on maize plants to facilitate time–effective searching for eggs of these beneficial insects. Furthermore we determined if the presence of aphids on plants influenced Chrysoperla spp. oviposition preference. Another study was conducted to evaluate the effect of indirect exposure of C. pudica to Cry 1Ab protein, through healthy Bt–maize feeding prey, on its biology. Daily flight activity patterns and the height at which chrysopid adults fly above the crop canopy were also determined, as well as the movement of adult Chrysoperla spp. between maize fields and adjacent headlands. A clear spatial oviposition pattern was observed on maize plants and oviposition was not random as reported in earlier studies. This data facilitates rapid monitoring of the presence of eggs in maize cropping systems and is also of use in general pest management. Choicetest data showed that females responded positively to host plants that were infested with aphids. Feeding studies in which C. pudica larvae were indirectly exposed to Bt–toxin at the 3rd trophic level, showed a limited effect of Bt–toxin on only a few of the parameters that were evaluated. The pupal period and percentage adult emergence of larvae exposed to an unusually high amount of Bt–toxin was significantly shorter and lower respectively than that of the control group. The overall result of this study, in which the possible effect of food quality (prey) was excluded, showed that Cry 1Ab protein had an adverse affect only on certain fitness components during the life cycle of C. pudica. However, since this study represented a worst–case scenario where diverse prey was not available to C. pudica, negligible effects is expected under field conditions where prey is more diverse. It was determined that chrysopids was most active between 16:00 – 23:00 and that they fly largely between 0.5 m – 2.5 m above ground level. An attempt was also made to quantify migration between different vegetations types. This part was terminated because of bad weather conditions at several occasions when the experiment was attempted. Chrysopids were never present in grassland vegetation, but an adjacent lucerne field maintained a large population. As the maize crop developed chrysopid population numbers increased inside the field, presumably originating from the lucerne field. / Thesis (M.Sc (Environmental Science))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2011.

In the Amazonian Region there is a great concentration of natural resources, however in most cases they are not preserved or explored in a sustainable way. In architecture things are not different. One of the great challenges for the active professionals in architecture and building area is the development of products and constructive systems which allow for the practice of the rational use of the natural resources, to increase the productivity and to reduce the time of execution, to incentive the use of local raw material, generating smaller final cost to the consumer. Especially in Belém, capital of the State of Pará, there are a number of professionals looking for an identity with the region, due to the effort of some architects concerned with appropriate constructions to the hot-humid climate. In this context, wood is a material with high potential, since it is abundant in the nature, and comes from a renewable source. This research has its focus in the Amazonian area, especially in the city of Belém-Pará. Thermal comfort and thermal performance of different alternatives of closing panels in two wood prototypes built in Embrapa - Amazonia Oriental are analyzed through measurements of environmental parameters - air temperature, humidity, globe temperature and air speed, in order to verify which panel is more effective in the control of the climatic demands. A research concerning the possibilities of use of wood in habitation projects of social interest was accomplished, for public or private organs. This research aims to contribute with technical information for the improvement of environmental comfort of wood houses in the hot-humid regions and to look for alternatives to discuss the use of wood as building material in a sustainable way / Mestrado / Edificações / Mestre em Engenharia Civil
