The role of satellite TV channels as news sources in Libya : a study of university students

Elareshi, Mokhtar Hassan January 2012 (has links)
The Libyan media has dramatically changed in recent years. This has been most prominently manifest in the introduction of new satellite television news services. This thesis was designed to investigate two elements – patterns of news media consumption and news credibility in Libya. It examined the patterns of major local and international TV news services operating across different media, broadcast and print, and associations between Libyan students’ consumption of different news media platforms. In this context, it investigated the news consumption habits of young people, with special attention paid to their consumption of pan-Arab news services broadcast via satellite television. It looked at the perception of gratifications students obtained from these news services. It also reported findings on students’ perceptions of the credibility of two local, Al Jamahiriya and Al Libiya TV, and two pan-Arab TV news services, Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya. In order to address the thesis research questions, a survey was administered to a sample of 400 undergraduate students at Al-Fateh University using a stratified random sampling approach, with the sampling strata set by demographic variables. The study found that the new TV news services played an important role in attracting young Libyans with information they desire. The spread of new news media sources (television, radio and print) in Libya has created a new type of customer that transcends national boundaries. Statistical analyses indicated that there are distinct news consumption demographic differences defined in part by news platform (TV versus radio versus print) and in part by the type of news provider (local versus non-local TV news services). The findings were discussed in relation to the growing impact of international satellite broadcast news services and the need for local TV news services to find methods of making themselves distinctive in a way that provides an alternative but still relevant and valued news sources. With regard to news credibility, in general Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya were given higher credibility scores than Al Jamahiriya and Al Libiya news services. Higher credibility ratings, however, were significantly correlated with an increased likelihood of reported watching of both local TV news services, but only one of the pan-Arab TV news services (Al Jazeera).

Ainda procuramos investigar se o conhecimento básico sobre as etapas envolvidas em uma produção televisiva tem interferência na maneira como os trabalhadores das horas comunitárias recebem e interpretam as mensagens / This dissertation is to study the reception of members at Botucatu's Communitarian Vegetable Garden Program in respect to the news articles about environment transmitted by the programs Balanço Geral, Tem Noticias, Jornal Nacional e Jornal da Band. For this, we adopted as referential theorethical studies of reception in Latin America, primarily considering the concepts and ideas of Jesus Martin-Barbero and Guilhermo Orozco Gómez, and interpretations of these texts carried out by other authors as Nilda Jacks and Ana Carolina Escosteguy. As methodology, the research included questionnaires, used the participant search method and the focal group. By this latter technique, we identify the perceptions and productions of meaning established by the participants in relation to the content they witnessed, as well as understanding and applicability of them in everyday affairs. Even we investigate if the basic knowledge about the steps involved in a television production has interference in how workers in communitarian vegetable gardens receive and interpret messages

Telejornalismo popular e sensacionalismo no programa Balanço Geral

Fonseca, Vicente Fernandes Dutra January 2010 (has links)
For the first time in decades, RBS TV has been challenged in its ratings in Rio Grande do Sul. Although it still maintains the leadership, it has been threatened by the gradual growth of Record TV ever since it began broadcasting in the state in July of 2007. Record TV has been fighting for audience through a popular program style which also reflected in its local TV news programs. This dissertation involves the analysis of “Balanço Geral”, the main popular show of the channel, attempting to understand the reasons for its good ratings which sometimes reaches levels that are above the hegemonic TV channel, something uncommon in the past four decades. The program is assessed through the analysis of four editions and takes into account data such as the sources used, the urban imagery represented in the show, the sites where the news takes place and the comments made by its host Alexandre Mota, an icon of its new style, before and after the presentation of the journalistic content, in order to understand how he approaches and connects with his audience – mainly the lower classes of the state capital and nearby communities.

Taking into consideration that this local television news reformulates its identification strategies with viewers in order to overcome the unsatisfactory audience ratings. Concerning to understand this problem, we suppose as hypothesis that this news rebuilds its identity or identification modes with viewers / online surfers, particularly with the adoption of two main strategies: Developing ambiguous thematic organization and at the same time favoring numerically police matters in its editions and discursively being constructed as a television news turned to the "provision of services to communities"; mediated a propagation process by the presenter between his/her public and private life by appropriating of social networks as "propagator" spaces TV news identity conformers. Essentially, we work with the concepts of "society in media coverage pathways" with Fausto Neto; news media coverage with Salaverria and Aviles, Verón and Fausto Neto; Technological and cultural convergence with Jenkins and identity with Stuart Hall, Woodward, Silva and Bauman. We adopt the TV news analysis methodology developed by Itânia Gomes and we operate with two methodological concepts "television genre" and "addressing schemes". Assuming the "analytical operators" suggested by the author: mediator; communicative context; thematic organization and pacts on the role of journalism. It is created an operator named "circulation" to observe the processes of interaction between producers and Internet users in institutional profiles and anchor on Instagram and Facebook. In conclusion, JPB 1st Edition reconstructs its own identity with the materialization of a “self-reflective” speech and serious / ethical newscast, which addresses a variety of topics that interests community as a whole and adopts a fluid aesthetic, light, mediated and converging with the Web. It is distinguished from the local competitors, which are defined in the same profile - police newscasts, but JPB 1st Edition presents as a television news which has a "liquid identity", contemporary, constantly changing, adaptable to needs for which may suffer the "society in media coverage routes."

Hudba ve zpravodajské televizní reportáži v České republice / Music in the TV news Coverage in Czech Republic

Smolková, Josefina January 2019 (has links)
This thesis deals with the question how music is used and how often in the news report of Czech TV stations. It also presents findings of musical psychology, that points to the undesirable influence of such music on the objectivity of news reports because music influences the way the news is understood and interpreted by the viewer. The whole work consists of two main parts - theoretical and practical. In the theoretical part, we deal with music psychology, music analysis, music and sound development in the audiovisual work and the practice of sound production in television news. The chapter on musical psychology presents the basic and advanced concepts and knowledge of the field, which relate to the ability of music to interact with human communication, perception, understanding, memory, experiences and emotions. The next chapter is devoted to musical analysis focusing on semantic analysis. The third and final chapter of the theoretical part is dedicated to music and sound in audiovisual works as well as the development of work with sound and music in television broadcasting and news. It also covers the development and specifics of production of TV news. In the practical part, we present our own research. The first chapter describes and explains the data from the quantitative part of the...

The Next Disaster… Will Be Televised: An Exploratory Qualitative Media Analysis of Hurricane Preparedness in Television Newscasts

Brown, Tyra L. 01 January 2017 (has links)
Major hurricane landfalls are the most dangerous natural hazard threats experienced in the U.S. Television news is a primary sources of hurricane hazard information and has the ability to influence what viewers understand about and how they respond to these events. While it is understood that media plays a central role in communicating weather, it is unknown whether or not news media content communicates the recommended hurricane hazard adjustments that are needed for preparedness and protection. Thus this study supports prior research calling for a closer examination of the role and effects of visual information in media documents. Using the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season, the present research employs qualitative media analysis to explore the framing of hurricane preparedness through television newscasts covering Hurricane Katrina from August 23-29, 2005. Key findings from this study suggest that there are five common frames through which hurricane information is presented to viewers of the national news broadcasts surveyed in this study. Preparedness information was found to be mainly represented through visual content but sparsely mentioned in reporting. The study also found that more often visuals were used to aid story development instead of provide educational or instructional messages that model the adoption of hazard adjustments and have the potential to motivate protective actions and behaviors by helping to increase self-efficacy. The present study concludes by discussing underlying aspects of conflict present within the media frames and offering recommendations for better integration of media content into risk communication campaigns for severe weather.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Patrícia Ferraz.pdf: 1484945 bytes, checksum: 47b4130c85da8bb473354806a92d1b6c (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-02-14 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / In April 2015, Jornal Nacional, from TV Globo, suffered a general reformulation which have transformed the verbal language, besides other aspects. The informality in the new TV show seemed evident. However, has the verbal language been able to establish a genuine conversation between the journalists? While recognizing the need of an interdisciplinary approach to the theme, we seek the theoretical framework to this research inside three distinct areas. Supported by Marcuschi, Koch, Fávero and Chafe, we compare the discourses from 2011 and 2015, trying to situate them in the oral x literate continuum. Within the Conversation Analysis approach, we analyze the discourses seeking interactionists Discursive Markers. After a theoretical review about journalistic objectivity, we investigate the reformulation influence on the objectivity strategies adopted in these two periods, in order to understand how the changes fosters the newscast emotionality. The research demonstrates that the conversational purpose, which is the basis for the verbal reformulation, is not accomplished. Discourse Analysis provides the understanding that this is a fake conversation, raised in order to seduce the audience, which is considered as an affective target. Despite the numerous and regular studies about Jornal Nacional, none of them had already explored the relation between informality strategies and the pursuit of interaction / Em abril de 2015, o Jornal Nacional, da TV Globo, sofreu uma reformulação geral que alterou notadamente, entre muitos outros, o aspecto da linguagem verbal.
