Empirically derived strategy types for SMEs in developing countries - a study of knowledge in action

Sujarittanonta, Lavanchawee, Marketing, Australian School of Business, UNSW January 2008 (has links)
This study provides a better understanding of the interactions between firm resources, strategy choice, marketing environment, and performance in rural SMEs. To date, a strategy framework specifically for SMEs in developing countries had not been developed. Past studies adapted the Miles and Snow (1987) strategy typologies or have developed strategy types for SMEs in developing countries only conceptually. This study extended the modelling approach adopted by DeSarbo et al., (2005, 2006) by empirically deriving a strategy typology specifically for SMEs in a developing country. Based on K-means clustering of theoretically relevant strategy dimensions, two strategy clusters were identified??lower performing conservative strategy A, and higher performing customer oriented strategy B. The issue of resource limitations in strategy formulation had not been adequately addressed by past studies on SME strategy. By examining how and to what extent objective and perceived dimensions of the external environment impact the resources-strategy-performance (RSP) links in rural SMEs, the study tested the applicability of the Resource-Based View (RBV) and the Knowledge-Based View (KBV) in a new context??that of rural SMEs in a developing country. Both RBV and KBV were supported by the findings. Key strategic resources in rural SMEs were explored for its strategic and performance implications. General resources and capabilities, knowledge-based resources, and in particular ??tacit?? marketing knowledge, were examined in an aggregated sense through the intuitive understanding within the one SME owner-manager. Strategy choice moderated and mediated the resource-performance relationship. SMEs with higher levels of resources and capabilities tended to adopt the higher performing strategy B. The study provided further insights on the kinds of knowledge that mattered. Knowledge-based resources that were more tacit in character determined strategy choice and performance??higher customer serving skills led to adopting the higher performing strategy B, while planning skills led to adopting the lower performing strategy A. Both the objective and perceived environments influenced SME performance by moderating the resource-strategy-performance relationship. SMEs located in more munificent provinces perceived their market environment accurately, possessed higher knowledge-based resources, and were more likely to adopt the higher performing strategy B.

The role of organised information and tacit knowledge in the survival and success of small enterprises in developing communities

Magagula, Nomcebo Faith 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2002. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In the business sector of the Information Society, information plays a crucial role in giving an enterprise a competitive advantage. Information as a resource in a small enterprise includes internally produced information, information obtained from the external environment as well as the knowledge residing in people's heads. However, this information and knowledge needs to be processed and recorded in physical formats for the purposes of decision-making and problem solving as it is part of the information resources of the small enterprise. This study explored the extent of information and knowledge management in developing communities' small enterprises in pursuit of survival and success. A deeper understanding of the business information needs, sources of information, frustrations and problems were investigated in order to establish and meet the specific needs of small enterprises in developing communities. More specifically, the objective of the study was to promote effective information organisation in small enterprises, with special reference to developing communities, as a means to support economic and social development of South Africa. For data gathering, a questionnaire was developed and distributed to owner/managers of 17 small enterprises in Kayamandi, a developing community in the Stellenbosch area. The purpose was to determine owner/managers's needs with regard to information organisation and to identify existing systems, tools and procedures that might be appropriate for this sector. The results indicated the absence or insufficient business education of owner/managers in Kayamandi, which has a damaging effect on their ability to acquire the information they need for their daily business work and operational activities. Moreover, the owner/managers do most of their information gathering using a variety of informal sources, and that information is not organised in information packages. This, in tum, affects their business development. Information should interact with tacit knowledge to improve the quality of work. In addition, the oral tradition should be promoted because it plays an important role in the daily running of the small enterprises in developing communities. In that sense, owner/managers should create an environment that can assist in knowledge sharing from various information sources. Maintaining such knowledge as information in retrieval based information systems could assist owner/managers in the overall functioning of their businesses because they are faced with the challenge of responding effectively to changing customer expectations. An affordable information system model is recommended and structured to fit owner/manager's work habits. The arrangement of information resources in the system can be used for categorisation of information either in a manual or electronic system.

The conversion from one to the other is the essence of knowledge creation. Following this principle, the organizational management should create conditions for the exchange of experiences among people for the conversion and consequent sharing of knowledge to flow dynamically in the organizational structure. Technology is a means of access to facilitate dissemination of information and organizational culture elements should contribute to encouraging the creation of new ideas. Considering these arguments, the project will discuss the relationship between tacit and explicit knowledge in four types of conversion, socialization, externalization, combination and internalization.

Although the literature has proposed several key success factors for knowledge sharing, it has yet to explore how these factors rank in terms of importance from a firm nationality perspective. Through a Delphi Method approach, upstream professionals from four major multinational Oil & Gas firms (Brazilian, North American, Norwegian and French), with at least seven years of experience, ranked specific literature-based proposed factors for successful intrafirm knowledge sharing. There was a total of three rounds, where the first round had 41 participants, and the remaining two rounds (second and third) had 39 participants. On average, open door policy was the most relevant factors that lead to knowledge sharing among the four firms. In terms of the least relevant ones, acknowledgement and status were seen, on average, as factors less likely to lead to intrafirm knowledge sharing.

La génération des connaissances et la conception des artefacts visuels : le cas de l'aménagement des espaces de travail dans les entreprises / Knowledge generation and visuel's artifact conception : case of workspace planning within the enterprises

Chouki, Mourad 26 November 2012 (has links)
The development of this work is currently carried out in a project mode, since working in the network requires deep modifications in a way of conceiving the workspaces as well as the offices. The enterprises that conceive these spaces often associate both the designers and the architects. The purpose of this present thesis is to answer the flowing question: how are the recent knowledges generated in the conception activities which appear in the field of work space planning? The first chapter focuses on the works related to the conception activities (works of Lebahar, Hatchuel and Visser...etc...). The second deals with the different theories relating to the generation of knowledge (works of Nonaka, Tsoukas and Engeström... etc...).To answer our research question, we have installed a device which requires a long_term intervention inside the enterprises meant for study (ethnomethodological approach). There are two Parisian enterprises that specialize in work space planning: (GENIE DES LIEUX and workspace CBRE).During the work, we have shown some difficulty intercomprehension that emerged in the conception activities. We have concluded, as a result, that these obstacles were due to relational tacit knowledges (RTK) according to Harry Collins theory. However these difficulties can be made explicit by the conception of intermediate objects. We have also noticed that ho when conceiving the artifacts into two and three dimensions, this allows the generation of new and useful knowledges in a project of work space planning.

No. of bitstreams: 1 TeseLFMA.pdf: 6039987 bytes, checksum: 0c2336ab8f5bc28819f69b3f22ff44fb (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-12-08 / Não recebi financiamento / The Agile Project Management (GAP) emerges as a response to criticisms made to Traditional Project Management Methods for being prescriptive, bureaucratic, and not very dynamic, thus limited when applied in innovation-intensive and knowledge-intensive environments. The main differences between those approaches are the self-management teams, use of the concept of vision rather than scope, iterations, greater customer involvement and pursuit for simplicity. All have an impact on how Knowledge Management (KM) is performed, in particular, the prioritization of the use of tacit rather than explicit knowledge. Several authors approach the intercession between agile project management and knowledge management theories, however, they made little progress in their proposals for management models. Through systematic theoretical reviews and case studies, we advance in this aspect, proposing a Conceptual Model for Knowledge Management in Agile Project Management. The main peculiarities are: consider both intra and interproject knowledge; consider GAP differentials; focus on the project team; use GAP rituals to potentiate the KM; and the applicability to any agile method.

Torino, Emanuelle 2010 November 1929 (has links)
Studies on knowledge management have pointed out the use of knowledge as a way for developing more efficient performances, due to the involvement of subjects on organizational processes, recognizing the value of knowledge assets as capable of making an enterprise successful. The literature in the area of knowledge management concentrates the discussions on business organizational environment and most of researches and applications are related to the organizational knowledge perspective. However, it is noted the existence of other contexts where knowledge management can be studied and discussed, among these, academic contexts on the scientific knowledge perspective. This work has investigated the environment of an academic institution with the aim of studying the scientific knowledge sharing at Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná (UTFPR). For so, a case study was developed at the institution, involving professors who met the following requirements: being primary adviser of doctorate dissertations and receiving Research Productivity Scholarship from CNPq. The data were collected by means of documental research and interviews were deeply analyzed using Content Analysis. The results showed that, even though there are not many studies on scientific knowledge management, the scientific environment already possesses elements used by KM. According to the interviewees, the process of knowledge acquisition and the interest in research activities are not tied to their professional area, but to their individual characteristics. Research is conducted in defined areas in order to deepen knowledge. Their production is related to the research conducted by their advisees and, in order to start a new study, they make use of literature, especially international journals. The communication channels mentioned were: participation in events, e-mails, trips, face to face contact, participation in boards, Skype, classes, forums, meetings, phone calls, chat, e-mail list, web page (open access and restricted by password), lectures, seminars, web server (with password), video conferencing. In relation to the formal communication, journals are chosen for their quality and credibility. There are no institutionalized tools and practices for sharing information and knowledge. It occurs in informal ways. However, investments have been recently made in tools such as the institutional portal, digital library of theses and dissertations and institutional repository. The institutional environment has limited physical space, on the other hand, it offers conditions for carrying out research activities. They consider contact with peers relevant for the development of their research activities.

Gestão do conhecimento na EaD corporativa: tensões e possibilidades da transferência do conhecimento tácito nas comunidades e redes sociais / Knowledge management in the corporate DL: tensions and possibilities of the transfer of tacit knowledge in communities and social networks

André Luis Otaviano Gatinho 28 April 2015 (has links)
From the mid 20th century the merely material resource has been no longer considered as the richest source of an institution or society to give way to the overestimation of the intellectual assets. This paradigm alternation caused the corporate within the concern of developing strategies and management tools that were able to provide an appropriate means for the generation and socialization of organizational knowledge. In the "society of the new economy," based on the valuation of intangible assets, the management of tacit knowledge, highly personal and subjective, is designed as an important tactic to provide competitive advantage to the company, including those that provide educational services, giving you innovation status headed to the future. One of the strategies suggested by the literature is to create social networking sites aimed at expanding and increasing the interaction between the participants in the knowledge sharing process and exchange of experiences for the arrest of collaborative social learning.
