Rosén, Oskar January 2016 (has links)
Previous reports have shown that several tattoo inks available on the Swedish market contain prohibited substances. Although the regulatory framework has been in place since 2012, there is a lack of clarity about whether the contents of tattoo inks meet regulatory requirements or not. The purpose of this study was to find out if an active supervision is conducted to determine if the regulations on tattoo inks are met, focusing on the content of prohibited substances. 43 Swedish municipalities were given a survey about their experiences in conducting supervision of tattoo artists. Most municipalities have used the regulation (2012:503) on tattoo inks. Parts that involves giving information to the customer, labeling of tattoo ink containers and sterility have been more common in the supervision than the parts related to control of the tattoo inks content. It is today difficult and time consuming to verify the state of tattoo ink contents and to compare with the available lists included in the legislation. The study suggests the introduction of a simpler, standardized method for investigating whether a tattoo color contains prohibited substances or not.

Drabužių kolekcija "kūno raštai“ / Collection of clothes "body patterns"

Grikpiedytė, Sonata 02 September 2010 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Bachelor's analysis of Tattoos: their history and characteristics of world culture, and society views them and their challenges, their reflections in contemporary art, to become better acquainted with this phenomenon and its use in the emerging clothing collection. This work is focused on the origin of tattoos and meanings in order to understand how this old art and the origins of tattooing has changed as far as the purpose and approach to it. The theoretical material is analyzing causes of the prevalence of tattooing in modern society. Additionally in this work interpretations of fashion (clothing), interior and other arts are presented.      In the detailed analysis of the tattoo, we can see that there are nuances, of which in the society it is not very fast phenomenon. Their longevity discourages many people to wear life-choice design, without ability to remove it. I thought about this tattoo issue, and I found a decision, which led me to the topic of a collection of clothes. Unlike tattoos, we can change clothing, and because of this simple feature of the clothes, they are solution by themselves. While maintaining all the characteristics of the tattoo, I moved them on the clothes.    Collection of clothes is a club theme - young and emitting sexuality, fancy styles, and bringing the most important thing - the tattoo, made of the leather and factured textiles. This interpretation is very close to the real tattoo characteristics. Designed 20 achromatic coloring models of... [to full text]

Úprava vzhledu těla jako kulturní symbol / Body modifications as a cultural symbol

Růžičková, Petra January 2013 (has links)
This master thesis focuses on body modifications, mainly tattooing. The aim is to present the tattooing in a broader context and show its link to many aspects of people's lives that was evident especially in traditional tribal societies before the colonization era. The attention is paid to the Maori culture and the Marquesas Islands because their tattoos used to have high art value and formed the inseparable part of the inhabitants' lives. At the same time it describes the up-to-date situation in the western culture, where the body modification is very popular. It also mentions the current tattoo projects happening in the Czech Republic. Information are taken from several books available in Czech, especially the work written by Martin Rychlík "Tetování, skarifikace a jiné zdobení těla" and many electronic books in English. Information about the tattoo and body art news comes from the websites where the interested people meet and write their observations and articles about the present events. The conclusion shows that body modifications and body adornments are as old as a mankind. They appear in all cultures and do not have only the aesthetic function. They are the important source of information about social position, family relation, wealth, past experience, etc. Tattoos and the other body...

We understand that they are about directions produced and mobilized for two distinct instances, one represented for the Military Policy of the State of the Bahia and, to other, represented for tattooed citizens that are unaware of the Cartilha. For the gesture of interpretation of the directions of the tattoos, understood here as space where if they materialize speeches, whose sensible they produce different effect, we use principles and procedures used for the theory which in we affiliate them in the analysis of the linguistics materiality. The study it is divided in five chapters: the first one, destined to the knowledge of the Cartilha; the second, reserved for a bibliographical exercise of the tattoos in order to understand as it was its (re) meaning until the present moment; the third, dedicated one to the theory of the subjectivity, where we reflect on the citizen; e the two last ones, considered for the analytical-interpretation procedure. In this way, we work the produced effect of direction, in the measure where we have felt presented by a repressor device, in an authoritarian speech, and felt given by citizens that make use of tattoo, both enrolled ones in distinct speech imaginary formations and affected by also distinct imaginary / O presente trabalho visa refletir, no âmbito da Análise de Discurso de tradição pêcheuxtiana, sobre o sentido atribuído a algumas tatuagens pela Cartilha de Orientação Policial Tatuagens: Desvendando Segredos, contrapondo-o aos sentidos produzidos por sujeitos que possuem as mesmas tattoos.

Poking, Prodding, and Piercing: Becoming a Successful Body Modifier

Ison, Joshua A. 01 August 2015 (has links)
Body modification is a global phenomenon. In the southeastern United States, two forms of modifications present themselves most often: piercings and tattoos. Much of the research conducted on body modifications looks at deviance as a primary concern, focusing less on what the individuals are like. This study examines the personal accounts of people with body modifications and add to the existing information about body-modified people. Interviews were conducted with fifteen participants across several months in different parts of two east Tennessee cities. Questions were open-ended and all responses were transcribed. Participants discussed a variety of topics, including pain, belongingness, and body image. This research offers suggestions for future research in focused areas of body modification.

This tattoo (doesn’t) define me : A study of the discourses that surround the evermore popular practice of tattooing

Nohrén, Johan January 2013 (has links)
This essay examines the discourses that can be formulated around how tattooed people talk about themselves and about tattoo as a practice. This is based on a discourse analysis study of interviews made in Scandinavian Tattoo Magazine. The essays theoretical and methodological framework is built around Marianne Winther Jørgensens and Louise Phillips framework discourse theory, which itself is based mainly in Ernesto Laclaus and Chantal Mouffes discourse analysis concepts. They formulated discourses; the sexuality discourse, the ironic discourse, the discourse of opportunities, the discourse of individuality and the masculinity discourse, has been discussed using concepts taken from Mary Douglas (purity and danger), Slavoj Žižek (cynicism), Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann (reciprocal typification and face-to-face situations). The essays analysis showed that women are not only preferred as representatives of tattooing in the specific interviews in the magazine, but also that they, as opposed to the men, are heavily sexualized. Theories regarding how relevant discourses surrounding tattoos have developed, based on how the respondents identify with the practice, are also presented, and conclusions were also drawn around the individualizing aspects of tattooing, where the analysis suggests that the boundaries of tattooing, for example in design and choice of location, will be continuously stretched further in the future.

From Superman to Superbland: The Man of Steel's Popular Decline among Postmodern Youth

Pevey, Timothy Aaron 19 April 2007 (has links)
Although immensely popular with American boys upon his debut in 1938, Superman has gradually lost relevance with the postmodern generation. DC Comics has rewritten the character numerous times in an attempt to regain lost popularity, but the problem lies in an aspect of his character they refuse to alter – his invulnerability. Superman’s invulnerable body was engineered to quell the fears America harbored towards technological progress, but his impervious physique now renders him obsolete. Boys in postmodern America, under the influence of post-Enlightenment body values, now connect with vulnerable comic book heroes whose bodies more closely match their own. This paper examines the sociological reasons for the shift in Superman’s popularity by comparing the body values of 1938 with those of today, and concludes that while Superman might have succeeded as a modern hero, he fails as a postmodern one.

Signature Event C*ntext

Effinger, Elizabeth January 2008 (has links)
This thesis examines how context in Derridean signature theory is taboo and underutilized, and calls signature theory to embrace the contaminating mark of context. Signature theory, as proposed by Jacques Derrida and Peggy Kamuf, offers a mere glimpse into Romanticism’s strained relationship with the signature, with a close reading limited to Rousseau. This thesis widens the scope of existing signature scholarship, and expands the context of the signature by focusing on a variety of signatures, events and contexts to reveal that the slipperiness of the signature is a pervasive problem, irreducible to simply just Rousseau. This thesis does not involve a return to the origin, or a search for origins; Part I is a return to the period which Derridean signature theory investigates, in an attempt to interrogate Derrida, Kamuf, and the signature itself; expanding the concept of the signature through its various manifestations of handwork and linework, and weaving together a more complicated, contaminated, and ultimately convincing context for signature theory to begin (again) from. Part II forces signature theory to begin again by putting it into practice. Here, I take Kamuf to task for her failure to fully ‘contract’ the signature. She completely ignores the physical dimension of the word ‘contract.’ Going one step further than simply critiquing her signature practices, I ‘contract’ the signature by having Derrida’s signature tattooed on my body. The tattoo and its location comment on the current limitations of signature theory, and perhaps of academic practice generally; of contracting without touching, and fearing contexts.

Two Film Adaptations of Larsson’s novel The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo : A Semiotic and Audience Reception Study

Casprov, Alexandra Genţiana January 2012 (has links)
Stieg Larsson has reached vast audiences with his popular, page-turning crime novels, the Millennium Series. The series tells a story not just for fictional purposes, but to draw attention to what people did not see about the society that Larsson lived in. In 2009, local actors starred in a film adaptation of Larsson’s first novel, which went beyond the Swedish public. In December 2011 an English-language remake based on the same bestseller was released, starring famous Hollywood actors. Considering language can hinder the reach of foreign language movies in international markets and that international and Swedish audiences demands differ, the current research aims to find out how the two movie adaptations diverge in terms of gender representation, production, graphic content, ideological meaning, and cultural representation as they attempt to target their respective audiences. In order to find answers, this thesis adopted a qualitative approach using two different, supporting methods. First a semiotic analysis of a representative scene with a high psychological and graphic impact on the viewer in both movies was conducted. Second, focus group interviews, with International and Swedish audience members, were conducted. The findings suggest that considerable differences exist between the two movies and that audiences have a different pre-conception in the way they perceive the same media product: gender role dynamic has been reversed in the two movies, the American version is more graphic in its display of nudity, and lacks the ideological layer. Furthermore, this study can serve as a basis for future research that could try to statistically represent the way Swedish and international moviegoers draw on the two adaptations.
