An Analytical Solution on Convective and Diffusive Transport of Analyte in Laminar Flow of Microfluidic SlitChen, X., Lam, Yee Cheong 01 1900 (has links)
Microfluidic devices could find applications in many areas, such as BioMEMs, miniature fuel cells and microfluidic cooling of electronic circuitry. One of the important considerations of microfluidic device in analytical and bioanalytical chemistry is the dispersion of solute. In this study, we have developed an analytical solution, which considers the axial dispersion of a solute along the flow direction, to simulate convection and diffusion transport in a pressure driven creeping flow for a rectangular shape slit. During flow, the balance of competing effects of diffusion (especially cross-section diffusion) and convective diffusion in the flow direction are investigated. / Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA)

Could the crisis in the PIIGS countries have been avoided with an independent central bank? : A study using the Taylor ruleMuntenanu, Jasmina, Geni, Jurinda January 2010 (has links)
This thesis is trying to find out whether the five studied countries, Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece and Spain would have avoided the economic crisis by having an independent central bank. The theory used for our study is the Taylor rule, using statistical data in order to count out the short-term nominal interest rate. Results are compared with the ECB nominal interest rate to see if the difference between the two rates is big. By looking at other macroeconomic data we will try to understand if the fiscal policy could have been conducted in a better way.The results we reached were varying. In the case of Ireland and Spain we could clearly see that a higher interest rate could have drastically altered the outcome, potentially avoiding the crisis. Regarding Italy and Portugal, the current crisis is more due to structural problems and not due to the level of the interest rate. Finally, we could see that Greece could have benefited from a higher interest rate. But we cannot definitely say that this has been the reason for the crisis since the Greek fiscal policy has been poorly conducted.

Equilibrium and stability of magnetohydrodynamic flows in annular channelsKhalzov, Ivan 25 January 2008
Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows in annular channels are of great current interest due to experimental search for the so-called magnetorotational instability (MRI) which is important for astrophysical applications (accretion disk physics, magnetic dynamo effect).
The main point of MRI experiments is to study the stability of liquid metal rotating in an external magnetic field. Two different types of fluid rotation are proposed: Taylor-Couette flow between rotating coaxial cylinders and electrically driven flow in transverse magnetic field. The implementation of MRI experiments and explanation of experimental results requires a theoretical study of the equilibrium and the stability of MHD flow in an annular channel. This is one of the main tasks of present thesis.
For study of equilibrium Taylor-Couette and electrically driven flows, a numerical code is developed which is based on the finite difference scheme with Jacobi iterations. The structure of flows is calculated for different parameters of the experiment. Effect of the inertia on the rotation profiles is investigated in detail. The approximate analytical expressions are obtained for radial profiles of rotation that can be used for optimization of the experimental device for MRI investigation. Equilibrium Taylor-Couette and electrically driven flows are compared from the perspective of experimental studies of MRI.
The spectral stability of electrically driven flow is studied by solving the eigen-value problem. This study is performed in the frames of both ideal and dissipative MHD models. It is shown that electrically driven flow can be destabilized through the mechanism of MRI if fluid velocity exceeds some instability threshold, which is determined by non-axisymmetric modes. The obtained results are compared with available experimental data.
A general variational method is developed for the stability study of MHD flows of ideal compressible fluids. It is shown that the linearized dynamics of such fluids has an infinite set of invariants. A necessary and sufficient stability criterion can be obtained after inclusion of one or several such invariants in analysis. An analytical example is presented to confirm the fruitfulness of the developed method.

Secular Foundations of Liberal MulticulturalismKhan, Mohammad O 15 July 2011 (has links)
In pursuit of a just political order, Will Kymlicka has defended a liberal conception of multiculturalism. The persuasive appeal of his argument, like that of secular-liberalism more generally, is due to presenting liberalism as a neutral and universal political project. Utilizing Charles Taylor’s genealogy of ‘exclusive humanism’ in A Secular Age, this thesis attempts to re-read Kymlicka in order to make certain theological commitments in his work explicit. Here I argue that Kymlicka, in order to make his conception of multiculturalism plausible, relies on a theologically-thick and controversial humanism operating under secular conditions of belief. By committing himself to a particular conception of the human and specific conditions of belief, Kymlicka’s liberal multiculturalism is rendered provincially incoherent because it fails to treat in a neutral manner certain theological commitments.
