Evaluating the implementation of curriculum in teaching reading and writing in Sepedi home language in Mankweng Circuit of Limpopo Province

Modiba, Phutiane Abram January 2018 (has links)
Thesis (M.Ed. (Language education)) -- University of Limpopo, 2018 / The aim of this study is to evaluate the implementation of curriculum in the teaching of reading and writing in the Sepedi Home Language in the Mankweng Circuit of Limpopo Province. This result from the fact that intermediate learners are struggling to read and write in the Sepedi Home Language, and as a result are incompetent when reading and writing even in their language of teaching and learning, namely English. This signifies that mastering to read and write in the Sepedi Home Language, is likely to enable learners to read and write better in English as a language of teaching and learning. Of a huge surprise, the struggle to read and write in Sepedi Home Language occurs with every cohort of learners registered in the Intermediate Phase. For this reason, the study is designed to evaluate the manner in which Sepedi curriculum is being implemented in schools to address and respond to challenges of inability to read and write by intermediate Sepedi learners. This is a case study covering three primary schools and it is located within the qualitative research approach and phenomenology. The collection of data was done through individual face-to-face interviews, document study and diagnostic assessments. Each of the three schools forwarded three categories of research participants, namely, an HOD, a teacher and a parent whose child was doing Sepedi in the Intermediate Phase. Findings revealed that overcoming reading and writing inability by the intermediate learners needs to be a joint stakeholders’ effort. In addition, inadequate Sepedi materials and resources for intermediate learners need to be the apex priority by the Department of Basic Education. In view of the shared research results, the study recommends that there be well-coordinated participation of all stakeholders in the development of skills associated with reading and writing for the Sepedi Home Language Intermediate learners. Lastly, the study recommends that intermediate Sepedi learners be offered an opportunity to participate in Sepedi essay writing competitions wherein they are first given pamphlets and posters in Sepedi as a clue. Finally, the Sepedi Home Language needs to be equally protected and promoted just like it is the case with English from the Intermediate Phase upwards.

Evaluating the implementation of the reading and writing instruction programme in the foundation phase of Lobethal Circuit in Sekhukhune

Maphutha, Maphale Juliah January 2018 (has links)
Thesis (M. Ed.) -- University of Limpopo, 2018 / The importance of programme evaluation is acknowledged by many authors. However, less emphasis is given to understanding programme implementation (Duttweiller & Dayton, 2009; HSRC: South African National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2012; Romm and Dichaba, 2015). Simply assessing a programme impact without a clear understanding of the degree to which the programme was actually implemented can result in inaccurate findings. The effective evaluation of both programme impacts and implementation can provide a more holistic perspective of programmes and an increased ability to identify and share best practices or weaknesses of programmes (Duerden and Witt, 2012). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the implementation of the Reading and Writing Instruction Programme (RWIP) in two primary schools situated in Lobethal Circuit. A qualitative approach was adopted using a case study design. Data collection was done through observations, interviews and documents analysis. A thematic approach was used to analyse the data while conclusions were drawn based on the themes that emerged during data collection and analysis. The results of the study indicate that there is implementation of the RWI programme. However, schools differ on how they apply the strategies that are outlined in the programme. The study recommends that there should be strong collaborations between Room to Read, schools, communities, circuit, district and provincial offices so that everyone understands the key components/elements of the Reading and Writing Instruction (RWI) Programme and how to apply them.

First, we proposed a systematic review of national literature about the role of educational agents (Study 1). From the lack of studies that aimed teaching reading and writing basic skills by educational agents, we were proposed a discussion on the role of formal and informal agents, in order to identify the behavior of the agents as applicators reading and writing tasks to students with ID and ASD. Following were scheduled four interventions applied by each of the educational agents with each student (Study 2) then proposed a joint training with all agents and evaluated the reading performances and writing of students when exposed the interventions implemented by them together (Study 3). The suggestions are proposed for conducting future studies and it is expected that the results may assist in the elaboration of teaching reading and writing interventions for learners with ID and ASD from the joint participation of the three educational agents: regular classroom teachers, special education teachers and parents.

Wilson, Kristina January 2017 (has links)
The aim of this study is to examine how some teachers in the Swedish Elementary School work with language-, reading- and writing to meet the diversity of students within the classroom and these teachers’ opinions about inclusion in these contexts.   The method used is qualitative, semi-structured interviews. Theory as a starting point is the socio-cultural perspektive on learning.   The results show that teachers work with certain awareness according to several different methods and strategies within the context of language-, reading- and writing, where all students are included. This study also shows that teachers taken part in further-education has a greater knowledge about inclusive reading and writing methods. There is a great interest among teachers to cooperate and develope their teaching practices.   The advantages with inclusive teaching practices are that students see and learn to accept each others differences and they are one another’s access in different learning situations. At the same time it is shown that there are practical difficulties that requires knowledge, support and resources.
