An Investigation Of Students

Bayindir, Hatice 01 January 2003 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis aims to examine students&rsquo / attitudes towards brain-based applications in the English Composition II course. For this purpose, a case study was carried out with a group of 23 first year students at the Department of Foreign Language Education at Middle East Technical University in the second half of the 2002-2003 academic year. After receiving writing training with a brain-based methodology for ten weeks, the students were given an attitude questionnaire which aimed at identifying their attitudes towards brain-based applications in the course. One week later, the iv researcher also conducted interviews with 10 of the 23 students separately to investigate students&rsquo / attitudes towards brain-based applications in the course further. The analysis of the data collected through the attitude questionnaire indicated that 93 % of the students showed significant positive attitudes towards the brain-based applications, while only 1 % of the students had negative attitudes towards the brain-based applications. The analysis of the results of the interviews also revealed that all students had positive feelings about the brain-based applications. Accordingly, the results indicated taking this composition course resulted in highly positive feelings such as confidence, relaxation, or being valued in the students. All students found writing meaningful and relevant to themselves. They stated to have acquired various skills during the course such as writing skills, computer skills, teaching skills, emotional intelligence, and an awareness of needs. They found these useful and meaningful for their lives in general, as students, and as teachers as part of their future profession.

Promoting Teaching as Design in Elementary Mathematics: Exploring the Potential of Curriculum Support Materials

Schulz, Jonathan Edward 07 December 2011 (has links)
This design research study explored the potential of Curriculum Support Materials for promoting teaching as design. Conducted over a four-month period, the study traced the design, development, and pilot testing of a web site intended to serve as a professional development resource for teachers. The purpose of this exploratory study was to evaluate the web site's potential for promoting elementary mathematics teachers' understanding of teaching as a design activity and for supporting teachers in engaging in teaching as design. A team of four second grade teachers tested the web site during a two-week pilot unit on introducing the concepts of multiplication and division. Qualitative data were collected from these teachers through a planning and teaching log, a post-unit questionnaire, and a post-unit focus group interview. The findings indicated that the web site had the potential to promote teachers' understanding of teaching as design, but that the web site's potential as a stand-alone resource for supporting teachers in engaging in teaching as design was limited. Two specific features of the web site, the Unit Checklist and the videos addressing the related mathematics content, were identified as potentially valuable resources that could be incorporated into an ongoing professional development experience. Suggestions for revisions to the web site are discussed along with recommendations for further study. / Ed. D.

Repensar a formação do arquiteto / Rethinking the development of the architect

Naruto, Minoru 27 February 2007 (has links)
The institutional training of architecture in Brazil is deemed unsatisfactory on an almost consensual level. It has been the target of many and continuous reformulations along his short existence a little more than six decades but nevertheless it has not achieved much advancement. This thesis aims to reestablish the process of these reforms, centered in the experiences of the FAUUSP, many of which have played a crucial part in the organization of the courses offered in the majority of architecture faculties in the country. Its author has partly experienced this process and analyses some issues and proposals which, in his opinion, are important for a meditation on that matter. Adopting the assumption that the problem of the teaching of architecture is, in fact, a problem of the teaching of design, this author analyses the organizational and conceptual conflict between the atelier, seen as the privileged locus for the teaching of design, and the disciplinary structure in which it is embedded. Apparently this conflict would be in the root of the problem of the persistency of the teaching of design, notwithstanding its successive reformulations. The thesis looks up to deepen this and other issues, seen as important for a more consequent forwarding of the problem.

Soudobá ilustrace, východiska, principy a jejich uplatnění v rámci výtvarné výchovy / Contemporary illustration, bases, principles and their application in art education

Janitorová, Magdaléna January 2018 (has links)
My thesis investigates contemporary illustrative art and tendencies occurring in the work of the youngest generation of the Czech illustrators. My objective is to bring an overview of the current forms, shapes, applications and overall state of the contemporary Czech illustration scene. The paper divides the illustration art into four categories, that are then more closely examined in individual chapters. My major focus is on the book illustration in all its current forms. This thesis contains regulatory principles that govern the standard of published illustrated materials through various recognised competitions and awards. I mention different associations and clubs that are currently active in the field of developing contemporary illustration. This occurs not only through grouping of illustrators but also through organising different events and festivals. In the didactic part this paper deals with the role of illustration in child development, specifically its natural artistic expression. This part also includes proposals of teaching materials and curriculum focused on illustration where I introduce my own designs. This appendix follows the above structure and constitutes my own project delivering authorship of visualised illustrations.

This dissertation, of a historical and documentary nature, aims to analyse the Teaching of Design at the Normal School of the Capital from 1887 to 1927. To do so, various documents are analysed in an attempt to understand the ways in which the Teaching of Design was implemented in teacher training, the proposals for the subject advocated by agents in the field of education, the background of the subject during the period concerned and its teachers. The choice of time period is justified since the Design Chair was instituted at the Normal School of the Capital in 1887, and in 1927 the Amadeu Mendes Reforms were enacted, which put in place measures to expand the Normal School to other cities, giving Normal Free Schools and Official Normal Schools equal status. The sources of the research were the São Paulo State Teaching Yearbooks, pedagogical journals of São Paulo on the Teaching of Design; previous studies on the same subject, documents from and about the Normal School of the Capital and the newspaper Correio Paulistano. The following theoretical references were used: Monarcha (1999) and Dias (2013), as well as the contributions of Tanuri (1979); Almeida (1995; 2016) contributes with questions regarding teaching practices at the Normal Schools and the curricular organisation thereof; and Carvalho (2011) with the concept of the São Paulo school model. In terms of results, it was observed that the Teaching of Design had different developmental formats for boys and for girls; Thomas de Lima and Felicidade Perpétua de Macedo are the teachers who remained at the forefront of the subject for longest; the intuitive method remains a benchmark most of the time and from the 1920s the analytical method became the main approach.

Teaching Creativity and Game Design: Postmortem on a Game Design and Testing Class

Emma, Todd 01 January 2011 (has links)
Can you teach someone to be a video game designer? This was the principal question behind the experimental class "Game Design & Testing" taught summer 2009 and again in 2010 at East Tennessee State University. The class did not attempt to encompass the technical aspects of video game modeling or scripting. It was focused on the possibilities of teaching students how to recognize, create and critique distinct game elements, then design interesting games around the concepts they learned. What makes a game fun, what makes some games memorable, what does it take to create balance in a game, what goes into making a game that is easy to learn and difficult to master, these were some of the questions set to the students throughout the semester?

Analysis and Suggestions for Chinese Teaching Materials in Argentina

Kuo, Silvia Luz Unknown Date (has links)
In the past decade, most countries of the Western hemisphere witnessed the surge of the “Chinese Language Fever”. Such a wave arrived in Latin America in mid 2000, with the emergence of Chinese language courses. At present, the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language in this part of the world is still at an early stage of development. In Argentina, the need for qualified Chinese teachers as well as adequate teaching materials is nowadays most urgent, as local teachers find themselves having to adjust to available teaching materials, or in need of preparing additional teaching material to compensate for the shortcomings of currently used course books. During my years as a teacher of Chinese in Argentina, I realized that the underpinnings of the Chinese pedagogical materials are in stark contrast with the practices in the actual classroom. Through my teaching it became apparent that Argentine learners possess distinctive language learning habits and needs, which had to be catered for by means of a suitable teaching methodology. In order to improve the current situation, teachers of Chinese in Argentina must seriously address the following three questions: How should learners’ needs be addressed? How should we reconcile the discrepancy between teaching methodologies and students’ language learning habits? And lastly, how should we reconcile the lack of relevance and effectiveness of Chinese teaching materials? At the moment, half of the materials used by local learners are written in English, i.e. with an English speaking learner in mind. The other half is published in the People’s Republic of China with explanations and instructions written in Spanish. Although circa 2009 a book published by local teachers emerged claiming to be designed specifically for the Latin American learner, the pedagogical quality and relevance of the content are highly questionable. Although these materials are widely used in Argentina, they are far from being ideal for the local learner. The main flaws of Chinese teaching materials currently used in Argentina are namely, the lack of relevance of the themes and linguistic content with respect to the learner’s world experience, and last, but not least, the failure of the practice activities to encourage significant intellectual processes and the development of communicational skills. The aim of this research is, therefore, to analyze the pedagogical materials currently in use in Argentina, in order to evaluate their effectiveness and relevance. In view of the needs revealed by local learners and the opinions of Chinese teachers in said country, I intend to propose a more adequate methodology, as well as a set of sample materials. Thus the present paper is the result of my personal experience as a teacher of Chinese in Argentina and the integration of the opinions of local Chinese language learners. After having analyzed the materials currently available, I will present a set of sample materials, in the hope that it will contribute to the improvement of the quality of the Chinese learning process for Spanish speakers, as well as to promote the future development of localized Chinese teaching materials.
