Varje fartyg är unikt : Sjöbefäls upplevelser av BRM och hur det tränas

Oddgeirsson Edmark, Henrik January 2019 (has links)
Bridge Resource Management (in short BRM) is today a natural part of ship handling, with its purpose of enhancing safety. The accidents, on the other hand, are not declining by a desired rate. This study has therefore posed the question of how working deck officers experience training in BRM and how it is contributing to safety. The theoretical basis is the concept of non-technical skills. The conclusion is that every vessel is unique when it comes to BRM. Seemingly abstract faculties as attitude and behavior shown by the crewmembers combined with practical, nautical competence and experience are key factors for safe ship handling. Every moment of BRM-training should be a unique event, and therefore arranged keeping the specific needs and background of the participants in mind.

Gender imbalance: a focus on senior management positions in the it sector in South Africa

Louw-Harmse, Yo-Ann Sonja January 2015 (has links)
Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Master of Technology (Discipline: Information Technology) in the Faculty of Informatics and Design at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology / Women in South Africa are under-represented in senior management positions in the Information technology (IT) sector — even with available incentives and directives to rectify the situation. The purpose of this research is to explore and understand the reasons for the imbalance in representation of women in senior management positions in the IT sector in South Africa. Seventeen women in middle to senior management positions from two of South Africa’s nine provinces — Western Cape and Gauteng — were interviewed for this study. The women were asked to relate their personal experiences and perceptions around organizational culture in IT environments and factors influencing their career advancements. A qualitative content analysis method was used to analyse the responses from the interviews. The findings of this study confirm the imbalanced representation of women in senior management positions. It was found that organizations are open and welcoming and provide opportunities to women, but women in the IT sector do not necessarily desire to advance to senior management positions. Factors such as the legacy in the IT industry where men held senior positions, career interruptions due to child bearing, and the absence of female mentor’s impact on the career advancement of women. The informal recruitment process for senior manager positions and the lack of emphasis on the need for women in IT when advertising senior management positions worsen the situation. Women lack self-confidence and are of the opinion that their skills set must be an exact match to the job requirements before applying for senior positions. Work life balance is not supported in the IT environment and no development programs aimed specifically at women are available. The paucity of women taking up technical careers — such as IT — limits the number of women available to develop and appoint in senior management positions. Guidelines for women to advance to senior positions and for companies to recruit and hire women are proposed. These guidelines will assist to correct the imbalance representation of women in senior management positions and promote IT as a career for women. A suggestion for future studies is to compare career advancement of women working in the software development environments, compared to women in the infrastructure and technical environments of IT, as well as those who have left the IT industry.

Utvärdering av Interprofessionellt lärande på operationsavdelning : Med fokus på kommunikation / Evaluation of an Interprofessional Learning Activity in the Operating Theatre : With a focus on communication

Jarl, Martin January 2020 (has links)
Introduction: During the past two decades, there has been increased interest in non-technical skills and how they affect patient safety. The number of articles published in the field has increased. Interprofessional education with the concept of CRM has been shown to be an effective way to train non-technical skills and teamwork, but training during ongoing surgery is uncommon.  Purpose: The purpose is to evaluate how the participants experienced the use of non-technical skills in an interprofessional learning activity during ambulatory surgery. Method: This was a cross-sectional study in which the participants (N=239) were asked to answer an evaluation survey following ambulatory surgery, concerning their experience of communication and teamwork. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics with chi-square, Wilcoxon signed-rank test and Kruskal-Wallis were used to analyse the material.  Results: The use of communication within and between the professions was ranked as very high by the majority of the participants in all the questions in the survey, and control using chi-square showed the results to be statistically significant. The participants experienced an increased understanding of the other professions in the team, and deemed that they had become more effective team members. They were also of the opinion that patients have an advantage when a medical team solves their problems. There were no statistically significant results between the professions. Conclusion: Training can be implemented during ongoing surgery. This is a popular activity with participants, and is vital for their development of non-technical skills. Keywords: Non-technical skills, interprofessional education, CRM, SBAR, closed-loop communication

The importance of managerial skills in the implementation of the regional bulk infrastructure grant in Mopani District Municipality, Limpopo Province South Africa

Selane, Lebogang Salome January 2021 (has links)
Thesis (MBA.) -- University of Limpopo, 2021 / Local government is seriously affecting governance due to lack of leadership, management, technical skills and knowledge within government. Shortage of skills is a continuous challenge at district level and in skills development activities despite considerable expenditure on skills development. The district officials are compromised because human resource development directorates have poorly planned effective training. The Local Government Municipal Systems Act (South Africa, 2000) relating to municipalities state that staff development is important for effectiveness and efficiency in compliance with legislation and enabling the performance of functions. The above challenges have stimulated the researcher to embark on this research. The study was aimed to investigate the importance of managerial skills in the implementation of the Regional Bulk Infrastructure Grant in Mopani District Municipality, Limpopo Province. The study determined the managerial skills possessed by officials, attempted to understand how the officials in Mopani District Municipality manage the implementation of the Regional Bulk Infrastructure Grant. The study further explored training programmes that can equip municipal officials with managerial skills. Mopani District Municipality has a mandate as the local government to service communities. National Treasury funds the Regional Bulk Infrastructure Grant; usage of the grant must be accounted for, regulations and frameworks guide its implementation. An overview of Water Infrastructure development by the Deputy Director-General NWRI from the Department of Water Affairs, shows that there are 27 District including MDM that are allocated the Regional Bulk Infrastructure Grant for the new infrastructure development, refurbishment, for the ageing infrastructure to be upgraded and replaced and extensive areas across municipal boundaries to be serviced. The Department of Water Affairs report indicates that due to delays in the procurement of material, engineering new appointments and other services, projects for 2017/18 financial year in Limpopo province have been delayed to the 2018/19 financial year. The research approach that was used in this study is qualitative research because it enables the researcher to critically investigate the importance of managerial skills in the implementation of the Regional Bulk Infrastructure Grant in Mopani District Municipality, Limpopo Province. The study employed both interviews and questionnaires for data collection. The interview was done at Mopani District Municipality and Mopani Community (Beneficiary) were given semi-structured questionnaires. The findings reveal that officials in Mopani District Municipality do not possess business skills. The officials that are trained received either traditional or competencybased training and do not possess managerial skills for implementation of RBIG. The study further noted that Mopani District Municipality is no longer an implementing agent due to the challenges the district encountered. The project had challenges that made the project not being completed within a stipulated period which was 2018. The Department of Water Affairs appointed Lepelle Northern Water as RBIG implementing agents due to the above challenges. Based on the findings, the following recommendations were made to Mopani District Municipality officials: • The district Human Resource Development office must afford officials training prior to being appointed. The HRD must conduct a skills audit to be able to know which officials need skills development. • Department of Water Affairs, Lepelle Northern Water and Mopani District Municipality must forge good intergovernmental relations ensuring that end service is delivered to residents. • Mopani District Municipality must partner with the University of Limpopo, University of Venda, Tshwane University of Technology, University of South Africa and so forth for providing effective traditional training.

The effects of social-comparative feedback during motor skill acquisition in highly-motivated learners: Applications to medical education

Eliasz, Kinga January 2016 (has links)
Social-comparative feedback (i.e., providing a learner with information regarding his/her performance relative to a group average) has been shown to influence a learner’s psychological and behavioural outcomes during motor skill acquisition (Avila, Chiviacowsky, Wulf, & Lewthwaite, 2012; Eliasz, 2012; Lewthwaite & Wulf, 2010; McKay, Lewthwaite, & Wulf, 2012; Stoate, Wulf, & Lewthwaite, 2012; Wulf, Chiviacowsky, & Cardozo, 2014; Wulf, Chiviacowsky, & Lewthwaite, 2010, 2012; Wulf & Lewthwaite, 2016). This research indicates that motor skill acquisition is facilitated when learners believe they are performing better than the average, regardless of their actual performance. It has been suggested (Wulf & Lewthwaite, 2016) that a better-than-average mindset enhances psychological factors such as self-efficacy and motivation and in turn, actual behaviour. However, there is also evidence to suggest that self-efficacy (having state-like properties) and motivation (having both state and trait-like properties) are related in terms of their affective influence on learning (Bandura, 1997; Schunk, 1990, 1991, 1995) but the relationship between the two constructs and its subsequent outcomes remain unclear. Even though individual differences in motivation have been suggested to influence self-efficacy beliefs, they have been largely ignored in this line of research. There is also evidence to suggest that learners possessing high levels of motivation (whether that may be at a trait or state level) may not interpret feedback in the same manner (Aronson, 1992; Festinger, 1957; Frey, 1986; Harmon-Jones, 2012; Harmon-Jones & Harmon-Jones, 2002; Harmon-Jones, Harmon-Jones, Fearn, Sigelman, & Johnson, 2008; Harmon-Jones & Mills, 1999; Harmon-Jones, Schmeichel, Inzlicht, & Harmon- Jones, 2011; Steele, 1988). Therefore, the goal of this dissertation is use both theoretical and applied perspectives to examine the degree to which social- comparative feedback affects psychological and behavioural outcomes in highly- motivated learners (e.g., medical trainees) learning procedural skills. Independent of actual performance, we provided manipulated feedback information to novice pre-clerkship medical trainees while they were learning motor skills to suggest that they were performing better or worse than the average. The first study used a basic sequential key-press learning task (Eliasz, 2012) and a basic suturing task to explore the role of social-comparative feedback in medical trainees and tested whether features of the task were important (i.e., basic laboratory task or technical skill task) during the interpretation of this feedback. The second study used the same experimental paradigm to extend our results to a relevant medical education context (i.e., medical trainees learning basic suturing techniques). The final study examined whether the credibility of the feedback provider (i.e., expert versus peer) played a role in how social-comparative feedback was being internalized by novice medical trainees. Our initial study demonstrated that, compared to those receiving positive or no social-comparative feedback, medical trainees receiving negative social- comparative feedback during motor skill acquisition had significant difficulties in learning both the laboratory and technical skill task. These findings suggested that compared to other learners, novice medical trainees (a subset of highly-motivated learners), responded differently to social-comparative feedback. The second study replicated this pattern and revealed that medical trainees receiving below-average feedback during technical skill acquisition experienced significant detriments to their performance, learning and self-efficacy. Our final study found that regardless of the feedback source (hypothetical expert versus another peer), the experience of receiving negative social-comparative feedback impacted self- reported psychological measures and the immediate performance of a basic surgical technique. This dissertation provides, to the best of our knowledge, the first demonstration that medical trainees, a subset of highly-motivated learners, interpret social-comparative feedback differently than other learners studied in the literature. More specifically, receiving positive social-comparative feedback did not facilitate the learning process as found in previous studies with non-medical learners, while the delivery of negative social-comparative feedback, irrespective of task or feedback provider, was psychologically and behaviourally detrimental to novice medical trainees learning motor skills. / Dissertation / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / This dissertation includes three original studies designed to examine the effects of social-comparative feedback during skill acquisition in highly- motivated learners (e.g., medical trainees). Regardless of actual task performance, novice medical trainees who were provided with feedback during the learning process indicating that they were performing worse than the group average, experienced significant detriments to their psychological and behavioural outcomes. This effect was present regardless of the task being learned (i.e., key- pressing or suturing) or who was delivering the feedback (i.e., a hypothetical ‘expert’ or ‘peer’). Receiving better-than-average feedback did not result in any additional psychological and behavioural benefits. Contrary to the research with non-medical students, where “you are above-average” social-comparative feedback facilitates learning and “you are below-average” social-comparative feedback is no different than a control condition, these studies suggest that the experience of receiving below-average feedback during the learning process can be detrimental for highly-motivated novice learners. These findings are important to consider in both the context of feedback delivery and remediation as they provide evidence that novice medical trainees, regardless of the task and feedback provider, experience difficulty in receiving information that they are performing relatively poorly compared to their peers.

The professional develoment of lecturers at further education and training colleges in the Eastern Cape Province / The professional development of lecturers at further education and training colleges in the Eastern Cape Province

Matshaya, Kulana 06 1900 (has links)
The study focused on professional development of lecturers at Further Education and Training (FET) Colleges in the Eastern Cape Province. The effectiveness of lecturers at FET colleges depends on continuous development in order to meet challenges that they face due to continuous changes in technology and curriculum. Also, the development of the lecturers has a positive effect on their teaching with the result that both the students and the wider institution benefit from it. The literature reviewed revealed the effects, types, theories and nature of professional development. A qualitative research approach in the form of document analysis, interviews and observations was used in order to explore the implementation and/or lack thereof of professional development and its effects in teaching and learning within the institution. It is hoped that the qualitative study and the literature review will contribute to the implementation of professional development for the benefit of students and the college. Different strategies for the implementation of professional development were recommended that could further enhance the introduction of professional development in FET colleges. / Educational Leadership and Management / M.
