The terminology of job descriptions: the case of library assistants who provide information services

Friesen, Margaret 11 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the kinds of terminology used in writing job descriptions for library assistants who provide information services affected the job evaluation rating for the jobs described. The study provided background information on the importance of the problem, pay equity and job evaluation systems, the nature and purpose of contacts in information and reference services, the changing roles of information providers and the problem of terminology in writing job descriptions. To examine whether the terminology in job descriptions made a difference in evaluation, three experienced job evaluators were asked to rate nine job descriptions representing three levels of jobs and three different terminologies: library, computer and generic. The respondents' ratings, five sets of nine ratings each, were analyzed by comparing the individual job evaluation plans, the respondents' numerical ratings and rationales. The findings revealed the similarities and differences in definitions used in each of the plans, the differences in ratings within and among plans and the extent to which the terminology used in the job descriptions could be attributed to differences in ratings. Some inconsistencies in ratings occurred. In most cases, the job description using library terminology was rated higher than its computer or generic counterparts but in two cases it was not. Of the three versions of terminology, the generic version led to the least favourable ratings. Considering the complexity of the responsibility o f contacts present to some degree in all three levels of jobs, some of the jobs may have been undervalued. Recommendations were made for action and for further study. / Arts, Faculty of / Library, Archival and Information Studies (SLAIS), School of / Graduate

The impact of skills shortage in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning industry in the Western Cape

Lubbe, Thomas Arnoldus January 2020 (has links)
Thesis (MTech (Business Administration))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2020 / This thesis examined the impact skills shortage among artisans in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) field have on the industry. The rationale for this investigation is based on the view of engineers and company owners in the HVAC industry that there is a dire need to train more artisans and to improving the skills of already qualified artisans. The thesis employed a mixed method research approach and reviewed relevant literature. Empirical data was obtained from HVAC contracting companies being members of the South African Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Contractors Association (SARACCA) in the Western Cape. The study demonstrates that there is a shortage of skilled and qualified artisans in the HVAC industry. Although there are individuals within the HVAC industry who are passionate about training, their efforts cannot supply the whole industry with knowledgeable qualified artisans. More emphasis should be placed on basic education, the level of artisan training, continuous training of qualified artisans and the retention of skilled artisans. Based on the findings, the study concluded that skilled artisans and poor quality workmanship is being experienced on a continuous basis. The lack of skilled artisans and the cost implication to obtain skilled artisans force companies to employ unskilled labour. It is recommended that the industry should work closer with government agencies to ensure that training being offered by private training institutions and colleges is aligned with the industry requirements. This together with an improved education system will secure skilled artisans.

Faktorer som påverkar ambulanspersonalens omhändertagande av sjuka barn prehospitalt : en deskriptiv litteraturstudie / Factors afffecting the ambulance staff's care of sick people in the prehospital care : a descriptive literature study

Martinsson, Anette, Nordensten Jansson, Anna January 2020 (has links)
Ambulanspersonal möter patienter i alla åldrar i flera tänkbara miljöer. / Ambulance staff meet patients of all ages in several conceivable environments. There are a lot of differences in the care of children pre-hospital compared to the care of adults. It differs in equipment in the ambulances and it differs anatomically and physiologically how children are formed compared to adults. In addition, the care of children often also involves the care of parents or relatives. The law emphasizes the equal value and right of equal care for all people. The aim of this study was to describe factors affecting the ambulance staff's care of sick children in the prehospital care. The method used was a general descriptive literature study containing both quantitative and qualitative scientific articles. The articles were searched in the databases CINAHL and PubMed. 15 scientific articles were analyzed and quality checked and form the basis of the result in the present study. The overall result that emerged showed that the main factors affecting the ambulance staff's care of sick children in the prehospital care were emotional reactions and that alarms concerning children were rare events. Furthermore, the subcategories stress, interaction and communication and education emerged within the category emotional reaction and experience and patient safety within rare events. The conclusion of the study was that it is important that ambulance staff are given the training to care for sick children, both in the education and in the professional life. This in order to maintain and develop the knowledge that is required. The study also showed a congruence between reality and law, regulations and the convention of the children's rights. Currently the care is not provided on equal terms for all people.

The Role of Audiology Assistants in a Clinical Setting

Duran, Joseph K. 01 May 2002 (has links)
The employment of audiology assistants to relieve masters and doctoral level audiologists of routine tasks is a timely and controversial topic in our field. Berardino (2000) examined the roles of audiology assistants within Veteran’s Administration (VA) Hospitals using an e-mail survey that was sent out to VA audiologists. The results of that survey suggested that the majority of VA audiologists were in favor of the participation of audiology assistants in the clinic to varying degrees. The purpose of this survey was to determine the current attitudes of audiologists and otolaryngologists toward the role of audiology assistants in the hearing health care profession. The attitudes and opinions of otolaryngologists were of particular interest because this population had not been included in earlier surveys despite the fact that they often employ both audiologists and audiology assistants. The survey was e-mailed to a randomly selected group of audiologists and otolaryngologists. In addition to general opinion and demographic questions, participants were asked to rate specific audiology tasks on a six-point scale ranging from very appropriate to very inappropriate. Results indicate that audiologists and otolaryngologists generally agree on which tasks are appropriate for audiology assistants; however, audiologists feel audiology assistants may be a threat to the profession of audiology whereas otolaryngologists do not.

Bioterrorism Hardening: An Exploratory Study of EMTs Preparedness and Practices

Ejike, Ndubuisi Chinemerem 01 January 2019 (has links)
The 2001 anthrax attacks heightened awareness of the possibility of weaponizing biological agents such as Ebola, anthrax, and smallpox and hence, the Bioterrorism Act of 2002 to prevent biological attacks and reduce bioterrorism threats and vulnerabilities. However, the 2014 Ebola epidemic raised concerns about unpreparedness for bioterrorism within the healthcare community and about secondary infections from healthcare workers. Using Kingdon's conceptualization of multiple streams as the foundation, the purpose of this case study was to explore the nature of bioterrorism threats and the level of preparedness of Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) who were involved in the 2014 Ebola epidemic in a New Jersey County for biological attacks and avoidance or reduction of secondary infections. Data were collected from 18 individuals through interviews and from emergency response documents. The data were inductively coded and subjected to thematic analysis. The emergent themes indicated that although there was an abundance of bioterrorism preparedness policies and programs dating back to the 2001 anthrax attacks, the response to the 2014 Ebola epidemic revealed inadequate bioterrorism preparedness practices. The study participants identified insufficient knowledge of bioagents and lack of regular training as factors that prevented enhanced preparedness practices. Participants suggested that improved training opportunities, interagency collaborations, and better funding would improve bioterrorism preparedness practices. The social change implications of this study include increased funding for bioterrorism preparedness to harden EMTs and the creation of public awareness of bioagents for improved 911 calls and emergency response practices.
