Little women: study of female representations in teen films and how those representations have affected gender perceptions

Santiago, Maillim 01 May 2013 (has links)
Although teen film is littered with tales of young women coming of age, the messages presented in most of these films follow a formula centered on a patriarchal nuclear family ideal, which leads to damaging perceptions regarding gender roles in teenage society. There is the main traditional model of stay at home mother with a father in the role of the breadwinner; the rise of rape culture; and the glass ceiling in the workplace. The young females consuming a mass amount of this media then reflect negatively on themselves. The research following this conundrum was broken into two parts: the production of a film looking to remedy the many problems of female representation in teen media and then monitoring the reaction to said film against its target audience: young females between the ages of fifteen and twenty-one. The purpose of this thesis is to explore what makes females within the teenage demographic react to certain kinds of media. If they react negatively or positively towards a media representation of themselves, to what extent does this affect the participants' activity in their daily lives? Therefore, through a process of screening three short films focused on teen issues - including the one made by myself for this study - and then conducting a survey focusing on questions regarding the participants' feelings towards the subject matter, their hopes for themselves, and teen media in general, there was an ability to gauge how deeply teen media affects the modern teenager.

Moreau, Isabelle 04 1900 (has links)
Although many studies on teenage parenthood have been realized, little research examined the effect of parental trajectories on school graduation. The aim of this study is to better understand how teen parents' life trajectories influenced the probability of getting a diploma. Obviously, young parents have higher risk of not being graduated of high school before their 20 years old. However, we support that teen parents' life trajectories are different for each. In consequence the probability of getting a diploma can be modified. Based on data from the Youth in Transition Survey collected between 2000 and 2007, our results from regression analyses suggest that the simple fact of being a teenage parent does not explain all consequences on school graduation. The probability of getting a diploma would rather be influenced by teen parents' life trajectories. Additionally, results suggest that instable and early parenthood contribute to the likelihood of not being graduated at 23 years old. Our result shows that early parenthood has to be analyzed differently and a combination between precocity and instability help to better understand the effects of adolescent parenthood on diplomation. An association between academic performances at 15 years old and the level of education at 23 years old was also found, which may explain why this association may influences the probability of getting a diploma.

Avaliação de instrumentos que investigam abuso de álcool e outras drogas em adolescentes: revisão de literatura / Assessment of instruments that evaluate substance abuse in adolescents: a literature review

Rosário, Adriana Moro Maieski do 29 March 2012 (has links)
The substance abuse is a major social problem in public health in most countries, due to the negative consequences of this behavior on the physical and emotional development of the people involved. The initiation phase of the substance abuse is beginning at earlier ages, and, as a consequence of that, an assessment to identify risk behaviors is very important for an acurate triage and subsequent steps. The objective of this study was to review studies and to describe 3 important instruments validated for Brazil and applied for the assessment of substance abuse in adolescents. METHOD: A literature review study, in the period from January of 1998 to August of 2010, in the databases of: Adolec, MedLine, Lilacs, PubMed and SciELO. In the selection of the studies the following criteria were evaluated: articles with application of the instruments DUSI-R, Teen ASI, and CBCL; the detailing of the instrument utilized for diagnostics; utilization of a performance indicator; quality of the study that enables the performance assessment of the instrument, and its coherence with the literature. RESULTS: 767 articles were found according to the inclusion criteria, and 54 of them were analysed, after the exclusions of the ones that did not meet the detailed criteria. 30 articles for the DUSI-R instrument were found, 25 of them related to interventions, prevalence and others. 5 studies were related to the validation of the instrument, with sensitivity rates varying from 80 to 85% and specificity variying from 70 to 90%. Another measure was the internal consistency with Cronbachs Alpha varying from 0.91 to 0.9451, presented in two studies. For the Teen ASI, 12 articles were found, and 8 of them were related to intervention, prevalence and others. For the validation of the instrument, 4 studies were found, with the reliability in 2 studies varying from r = 0.69 to 0.90, one study with internal consistency with Cronbachs Alpha varying from 0.54 to 0.88 and another study with the area under the ROC curve = 0.88. For the CBCL, 12 studies were found, and 8 of them were related to the prevalence and risk factors. The performance measures were presented in 4 studies, where 2 instruments measured the sensitivity rate varying from 80.4 to 87%. One study report the Cronbachs Alpha between 0.85 and 0.94, and another study studied the psicometric properties for the German version. CONCLUSION: The results of the studies suggest that the instruments included on the research evaluate the substance abuse in adolescents, with good psychometric properties, although in different ways. The Teen ASI and DUSI-R evaluate the substance abuse and other areas of life. The CBCL is useful to evaluate the mental health, and its not specific to conduct an assessment for substance abuse. So, when choosing assessment instruments, its important to consider: time management, investment in the education of the professionals; and consolidation of the results that contribute effectively to the improvement of the treatment

Laying the Foundation for New Approaches in Evidence-Based Sex Education Curriculum Programs: A Family Life Policy Change

Prosser, Rina Marie 01 January 2015 (has links)
The teen pregnancy rate in Henry County, Tennessee has increased over the years. The purpose of this project was to develop an evidence-based family life education policy for possible adoption by the board of education to address the persistent high teen pregnancy rate for girls aged 15-17 in the county. This present study resulted in a revised policy that was based on a comprehensive policy termed Abstinence-Centered Plus Contraception. An 18-member collaborative, organizational, and community project team, made up of community leaders, nurses, counselors, teachers, and students, assisted in the development and adoption of the policy, practice guidelines, and the development of implementation and evaluation plans for the newly adopted policy. The theoretical framework was based on the social, cognitive, and behavior change theories. The program logic model served as a framework to monitor its progress. Existing peer-reviewed literature, including research studies, state and national teen pregnancy prevention projects and curriculum, and publicly available statistics, were gathered and reviewed by the project team as background to be used for developing and changing policy at the institutional level. Project monitoring involved tracking processes surrounding policy and practice guideline development and adoption, as well as implementation and evaluation plan development for the adopted policy and whether these processes progressed as the empirically-derived teen pregnancy prevention projects should when changing sex education policy at the organizational level. This project resulted in policy adoption and developing a policy implementation and evaluation plan to be disseminated within a county school system that could decrease teen pregnancy rates and demonstrate positive outcomes.

He's so dreamy, she's so beautiful: celebrities, the representation of (pre-)adolescent femininity in M, and self-perception

Campbell, Jennifer Ann Elizabeth 30 April 2008 (has links)
In this thesis, I critique the representation of pre-adolescent and teen femininity in M and the influence of the teen fan genre on identity development. This discussion revolves around a social semiotic analysis of four texts and two sub-texts, and a social semiotic auto-ethnographic exploration of my experience as a reader of teen fan publications. Among the texts, a feminine identity is represented through eight interlocking semiotic themes: fashion and beauty, celebrity idolization, entertainment, consumerism, heterosexuality/romance, friendship, celebrity as occupation, and affluent lifestyle. My research findings show that the portrayal of femininity in M is a narrow and unrealistic ideal. Conveyed through celebrity worship, femininity is a highly (hetero)sexualized, racialized, thin, able-bodied, affluent, mass-mediated, and (self-)commodified ideal that perpetuates age ambiguity As the discussion of my adolescence shows, the representation of femininity in the teen fan genre can thwart creativity and contribute to a negative self-concept. Finally, teen fan magazines were important in assisting in the creation of a (pre-)adolescent feminine self, but it was only one institution in which my identity formed. My self-concept emerged from social regulation via the interconnected relationship among teen fan magazines, mall and school cultures, and family.

Film Families: The Portrayal of the Family in Teen Films from 1980 to 2007

Clark, Caroline Clayton 01 December 2008 (has links) (PDF)
American adolescents watch an average of 3.5 hours of television and movies everyday; many attend more than one movie a month. Adolescents as a group watch more movies than any other group of the population, yet little research has been done on what is shown in teen movies. Adolescence is a time when values, beliefs, and opinions are formed and the media has been found to be a place that adolescents find information that can influence the construction of these identities. While there has been a vast amount of research looking at the family as portrayed on television shows, there has been little research done on film families. More specifically, there has not been an examination of the family as seen in movies targeted towards the teen audience. Through the use of a content analysis, this thesis reviews three decades of families as depicted in teen films, focusing specifically on five areas: family structure, ethnicity, occupation and children, socio-economic status, and parental depictions. This thesis includes a sample of the 90 top-grossing teen movies made during the 1980s, 1990s, and the 2000s (2000-2007) and includes a total of 139 different families. Results indicate that the typical family as depicted in a teen movie, is a middle-class, Caucasian, dual or single-parent family with one or two children; dad is a working professional and mom stays at home. The parents are adequate in their parenting skills and are authoritative in their parenting style. The results of this thesis are compared to findings of past studies regarding television families and against U.S. census data. The implications of the results of this thesis are discussed through the lens of cultivation theory.

"It's not because I wanted it-- I knew I wasn't ready" : young mothering teens in the borderlands speak out about the pressures of sex, love and relationships

Reyes, Ganiva 28 October 2010 (has links)
Why are so many girls becoming pregnant in Brownsville, Texas? I encountered this question as a result of my field work. Teachers, school administrators, community officials, parents, and even students pose this question as part of a local concern over the high birth rate among Brownsville youth. As a response to this concern, I engage with this overarching research question by exploring the sex lives and romantic experiences of young mothering teens in Brownsville, through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. However, as part of a larger mission of problematizing common misconceptions and misunderstanding regarding Mexican-origin youth and their sex lives, this thesis offers a Chicana feminist/borderlands analysis of what the young women shared concerning their sexual experiences. Through their stories, I situate teen pregnancy as a symptom of a complex web of discourses, practices, social institutions, and ideologies regarding sex, thereby elucidating the socio-cultural factors that make young Mexicanas vulnerable to unprotected sex, and consequently unintended pregnancy in Brownsville, Texas. Throughout this thesis I focus on three social and personal venues that stood out as the most influential sources from which my informants learned and talked about sex: peers, mothers, and boyfriends. Contrary to the culture of silence presumed by the literature, the mothers and peers of the young respondents are quite vocal about sex; in fact, there is strong peer pressure for young women to have sex. However, they are expected to so within the context of a committed, heterosexual relationship in which young women give into male desire. This set of social expectations compels young women to have unprotected sex, but also to engage in unwanted sex. In the final chapter, I suggest how sex education can be improved and tailored to the particular needs of Brownsville youth—that is both women and men. / text
